POLITICAL ROUNDUP: OBAMA’S VP CHOSEN / APOLOGY FOR SLAVERY & SEGREGATION? / RACIST AR LICENSE PLATE
Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama mentioned on Sunday’s Meet the Press that he would pick a vice president who would “help [him] govern” and not just someone “who I send off to go to funerals”.
“I’m not interested in a vice president who I send off to go to funerals. I want somebody who is going to roll up their sleeves and be willing to work,” he said.
Following a roundtable with some of his top economic advisors on Monday, Obama headed to the office building of Eric Holder, who along with Caroline Kennedy, is in charge of the search for Obama’s vice presidential running mate.
Obama’s campaign wouldn’t comment on the meeting, but he did say the choosing a running mate would happen “soon enough”.
“I’m going to want somebody with integrity. I’m going to want somebody with independence, who’s willing to tell me where he thinks or she thinks I’m wrong, and I’m — I’m going to want somebody who shares a vision of the country where we need to go, that we’ve got to fundamentally change not only our policies, but how our politics works, how business is done in Washington,” he said.
Obama left Holder’s office building almost three hours after he arrived, and he declined to answer any questions regarding the meeting.
APOLOGY FOR SLAVERY & SEGREGATION?

The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to take up H.Res.194 this week “apologizing for the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans”.
The resolution was introduced by Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tennessee), who expressed interest in joining the Congressional Black Caucus early last year but later backed away from the idea. It makes no mention of reparations, but it does state that black Americans “continue to suffer from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow—long after both systems were formally abolished…”
H.Res.194 also acknowledges that an apology “cannot erase the past, but confession of the wrongs committed can speed racial healing and reconciliation and help Americans confront the ghosts of their past”.
The resolution must receive a two-thirds vote to pass and has 120 co-sponsors.
RACIST AR LICENSE PLATE

License plates in Arkansas have three numbers and three letters. Often, the characters are meaningless, but what would you think if you saw the letters ‘NGR’?
Alice Kunce, an Arkansas resident was recently issued a plate with such a combination, and she told the clerk there was no way she was taking it.
Following the incident, the state decided to pull the entire series of license plates with that letter combination. Arkansas has an employee screening license plates to filter an offensive letter combination, but apparently this one didn’t catch the worker’s attention. Hmm…I wonder why.

that license plate thing is ridiculous… how can you let a license plate offend you?
It’s not the word that offends remember… It’s the semantics…. The implied meaning.
I’m sure the random letter generator didn’t intend to abuse…
Then again….

I’m glad to see Senator Obama back in the states. This country is so full of itself until no one believes that blacks are owed an apology. I listen to white liberals and conservatives talk about the “black issue.” This country is not ready to have an intelligent discussion about race especially now that they can say, “Hey look, we may vote for one of you, what’s your problem?” Many whites refuse to believe that they continue to benefit from institutionalized racism, this is why programs such as Affirmative Action will always remain endangered, and why blacks are seen as people who have it easy. As long as we continue to fall for this so called, “I’m colorblind and I don’t see race bull,” hey race will continue to be the festering sore that it is for this country.

I’m interested in knowing who Obama picks for his VP. I’m it will be someone he trusts.
As far as the apology I must say it it about time, but on the other hand they really are not considering any type or reparations. How come Jewish people are basically set for life continually receiving money from the government and we “may be” getting a public apology or recognition? Thats even if they get the 2/3 vote they need.
As far as the NGR I can see it being offensive and how the woman did not wanna take it. On the other hand as a black woman I honestly didn’t care to recognize it when I first saw it. For all I know NGR could’ve stood for Nigeria which if you shorten it to its most important letters is NGR. I can see the mishap, but also I think we take things a bit too far sometimes.

The license plate thing is just a coincidence. People get so worked up for nothing it’s ridiculous! Why would a racist pay to customize a plate to call out niggers? And the fact it occurred in the South (Arkansas) is the only reason why it’s getting press.

who is Obama looking at for VP? This will be my determining factor in voting for him. I again don’t know what his platform is about. I know the standard healthcare reform, education, yada yada, yada. But what else? This is going to be a tough election. And no I’m thinking about voting for McCain.

as far as apologizing for slavery, too little, too late. What happen to the 40 acres and a mule we were suppose to get? Japanese, Jews all got their reparations after the U.S. apologized. Us? Nothing!! We must always struggle and have to deal with whatever we are handed!!

I’ll be praying that Obama gets the “perfect” VP. It’s says a lot to know that Obama invites constructive critisim and ideas from his soon to be VP. Afterall, there’s 2 sides to every story.

APOLOGY FOR SLAVERY & SEGREGATION
Sad, what the hell dose that hve to do with what is going on now. Like I have been saying, parents are at fault for lack of caring enough about their kids and teaching them to be complete Amreican. Even Obama has said that all the government help in the world will do nothing if parents dont get involved. (The only thing I agree with that his has said publicly since I first hear him speak in 2003.) But I know for most of the readers here no matter what their parents did or failed to do it will always be the white man or the government or the police, or the schools or what ever keeping them down. Also At the time reparations were giving out to some black people during reconstuction after the civil war. Jews were giving money not from the America, but from the United Nations. Indians cant just say they are Indian and recieve their funds, they have to have there family name on the Dawes Rolls, Prove they are IIndian with a DNA Test, and compaign to congress. You cant just thow money at the problem, we should have learned our lesson from Katrina.

APOLOGY NOT ACCEPTED!!!!!The US government has always had a lot of good sounding words. But the yard stick that I use to govern a man’s character is not his words but his deeds. But the fact of the matter is racism is as American as Apple Pie. In my opinion there haven’t been a whole lot of efforts by the government to stamp out this ugly mindset of white America, that their ethnic stocks are higher than Black people’s. I pride myself on being a realist…I know that if the government was to give every single Negro reparation, that money would double or triple the national deficit and it is not feasible. But the way I look at it, it is better to teach a man how to fish than to fish for him. So giving us money or tangible assets would be a short term solution and frankly how many of us would know how invest those monies wisely? So in my opinion the solution to this would be to grant every Black person in America free college education. This way African Americans will be able to get a good education, and be able to get a job and provide for their families. This way, through education I believe every black person would be able to fish for themselves.

My station sent me to be back up camera on this story when it first broke. This is not news nor is it important enough for people to be out raged. If the white lady felt uncomfortable about the tags she should have just turn them in and not made a big fuss to get on the news. It was very divisive of her. She called us( media) There are kids killing kids, drugs and gang activity killing that part of AR. Nobody want to talk about that. Let’s keep talking about the trival things and ignore the big problems so we will always have something or some one to blame when we dont always do our best.

Obama is the next president and I know that he will choose the right VP to be his right hand man/woman. I got faith in him.
I appreciate all the apologies for slavery. I just wish that the after effects on blacks will soon demise.
The license plate NGR incident doesn’t seem that serious, but ofcourse ignorance in people will take the ordeal to another level. So it’s safe to do away with the NGR initials on any license plate.

I dnt neccesarily thnk the plate is offensive. As #17 pionted out-if it was personalized & the driver was Caucasion w/ a confederate flag flyn frm their antina & HAIL HITLER written across their back window & nooses painted on their car then I’d think twice abt tht person. But if tht is the way the letters fell then it shudnt be that big off a deal…
On the other hand, I can understand y tht lady didnt want tht plate. She prolly jus wantd nothn 2 do w/ nethn tht can associate her with b’n a racist.Whites get so redicules 4 simple stuff now just bc of wat AA’s went thru…or r still go’n thru.If she didnt say nethn & ppl saw her plate she wuda still got slack abt it. she did wat was best 4 her.she went with her feelns and refused it. if she felt that was the right move then hey….
and I am an African American Woman…

What really needs to happen is that the gov needs to be honest, fess up and apologize to what happened to Lavena Johnson…thats what is current and in dire need of an apology. What a shame. An apology for slavery is too little too late as far as I’m concerned and it definitely won’t change our daily lives or our future. I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes nowhere further than it has now, it would take a lot for the entire country (Government) to admit they were at fault, and I don’t think they could do that without opening themselves up for many “monetary” and “reparatory” court cases and lawsuits. Obama ‘08!!!

Slavery and discrimination is emotional and physical ABUSE and should be repented of to heal the wounds and word curses that have been spoken out against blacks and other minorities. Its no different than emotionally abusing a child, a spouse, etc. with words that say you deserve less or should be treated this way because you are black and different. It has the same impact and unfortunately becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. I heard a minister say that each race God has created has a genetic blessing bestowed upon it, for his glory. States that have apologized show great maturity.

LMAO @ #35. I want that one!
Seriously though, I don’t see the plate as offensive. What I do find offensive though is the fact that they are trying to apologize for something that happened a hundred years ago. It’s too late, and quite frankly I don’t believe they mean it.
Why bring it up now of all times? Is it because a black man may be the next president?
What’s really hood here???

I hope that Obama picks the right person for vp because Dick Cheney didn’t do anything. Maybe he should pick someone like Al Gore, he was a good vp for 8 years. It is too late for america to apologize to us they should’ve did this a long time ago, so I won’t accept your apology america. Ameica needs to give us af am’s the 40 acers, the money they was suppose to give us along time ago and the mule. That license plate is not really offensive so I don’t why that lady is making a big deal about it. All she has to do is get a new one like everybody else.

I really hope Obama makes a wise and responsible decision for his VP. I wanna see the VP and too be honest… ever since I knew about the govt’, I never knew anything about the VP. That’s how “not there” they are…. sad. Anywho, that AK thing… I don’t know what to think of it. I mean it was put on white ppls’ plates as well so it can’t be racial. I think this is just another thing being over-analyzed. Speaking of DRAMATIC, wtf is up w/ the apology? How is this gonna make any racists that are still out there “confront their national ghosts” and erase the hate taught? Seriously… if anything it would make us look weaker. Like we need to be pacified or something…. i dunno. I think “suspect” or something because ppl are feeling Obama and its like “lets play nice” now. I truly hope w/ Obama in the oval office, ppl will start to erase ignorant ideals BUT it takes more than that… it takes US to start respecting ourselves first.
