POLITICAL/NEWS ROUNDUP: BEIJING BARS TOLD TO BAN BLACK PEOPLE DURING OLYMPICS? / CONDI PRAISES BARACK & PLANS TO MOVE ON / TAVIS TALKS

The 2008 Summer Olympics will be hitting China in a couple of weeks and some disturbing reports are coming out of Beijing.

According to the South China Morning Post, bar owners in the Beijing area were asked to refuse service to black patrons for the upcoming games. The article reports:

Bar owners near the Workers’ Stadium in central Beijing say they have been forced by Public Security Bureau officials to sign pledges agreeing not to let black people enter their premises.

“Uniformed Public Security Bureau officers came into the bar recently and told me not to serve black people or Mongolians,” said the co-owner of a western-style bar, who asked not to be named. [SOURCE]

WOW! The Olympics theme this year is “One World, One Dream” hopefully China will try to uphold it.

CONDI PRAISES BARACK & PLANS TO MOVE ON

When Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice appeared on CNN’s Late Edition earlier this week, she was asked about the historic nature of Sen. Barack Obama’s position as the presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidency.

WOLF BLITZER: One final question. Your immediate predecessor, Colin Powell. I interviewed him many times. But he said this to Tavis Smiley, back in January. About this race and about the phenomenon of Sen. Barack Obama, he said this:

“Let’s enjoy this moment where a person like Barack Obama can knock down all of those old barriers that people thought existed, with respect to the opportunities that are available for African Americans. And my congratulations to him.”

Now, you grew up in the segregated South. You know what racism is in our country. The fact that Barack Obama is now the Democratic presidential nominee, what does that say to you?

RICE: I think it’s great. And I think it’s great for our country.

And I do think it says that we’ve come a long way. But it’s interesting that it’s from Colin Powell. He knocked down a few barriers of his own. He knocked down the barrier of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He knocked down the barrier to the first black secretary of State. Yes, I’ve knocked down a few too. It just shows that our country has been doing this for a while and it’s great that this last barrier, perhaps, has also come down.

BLITZER: Have you decided who to vote for?

RICE: Wolf, yes.

BLITZER: Do you want to tell us?

RICE: No.

Rice also mentioned that she has no intention of sticking around in Washington following her term.

Look, I’ve done my part. And I’ve got six months to sprint to the finish and then I have other things that I want to do. I want to go back to California, I want to write a serious book about American foreign policy. There are issues that have come to concern me greatly. Some that I was concerned about before I came here, like the state of education in the United States, which I think is at the root of our competitiveness. It’s at the root of our confidence and therefore it’s at the root of our international leadership. I’ll go back and work on issues like that. And it will be time for somebody else to take the stage.”

TAVIS TALKS

( Tavis Smiley speaking at the SOTBU last year )

According to Tavis Smiley, “There is no such thing in America as race transcendence, and Obama’s going to find that out real soon. There’s no such thing as ‘post-racial’ in America, because if you push the envelope too far, you’re going to hear about it.”

And he should know. Following negatively perceived comments about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, Smiley endured a media firestorm after criticizing Obama for not attending the annual State of the Black Union. In April, he announced he would be leaving the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Although Joyner suggested that Smiley couldn’t take the heat surrounding his remarks on Obama, Smiley contended that he needed time to concentrate on other endeavors.

Smiley says, “Just because Barack Obama is black, doesn’t mean he gets a pass on being held accountable on issues that matter to black people. I’m not an Obama critic or a McCain critic. The term itself is dismissive and insulting.”

Smiley, who owns his radio show and has authored numerous books in addition to creating the Tavis Smiley Foundation to empower youth, will broadcast live from the Democratic convention next month, as well as the Republican convention in September.

“I want to do what I always try to do, which is to be authentic in my coverage,” Smiley says. “I’m an advocacy journalist, not a journalist in the traditional sense. I believe my role in the media is to get people to re-examine the assumptions they hold.”

“This is what I do — asking critical questions,” Smiley says. “Now some of you regard it as keeping a brother down, holding a brother back. Because you regard it that way, you don’t understand that this is the role that I’ve always played.”

  1. i’m waiting for the report that says that report on china is false but it doesn’t seem to be surfacing… scary..

It’s sad that Chinese, Whites, and many more races hate blacks. My sister is a teacher and she said that many of the children she educated are from another race. 60% of the staff is African American. The same people ‘s children she educated hates the educator. These are the same children who can’t speak English and the governement has so many programs to help them reach their highest potential. But think about it, were Blacks giving the same oppotunities many years ago? We were spit on and called derrogatory names. When comes to us, race will always play a factor.

We as black people need to come together and rise up against all the hatred people bestow on us. We need to especially help our young males. We need to stop point the fingers and deal with the issues at hand. We used to be the number 2 race in American, but our numbers are decreasing tremendously. Our children are suffering for what the so called media portray us to be (look at the no sagging law). It really makes me upset when people get in these high places forget where they come from and what to tear each other down. We never stick together and try to help each other when we are on top. That is why we aren’t strong like we use to be.
As for Obama, I am a supporter. If he gets office, the first term he going to have to do what the democrat expect for him to do so that he could win the next election. Even if he can get the economy back the way it use to be, that a plus. Then when he get to his second term, he will do what ever he wants to do (for us hopefully) since it would be his last term. Isn’t that what Bush did?

  3. Interesting…when I was there in China a few years ago…Chinese bar owners were discriminating against other Chinese….Neva had a problem there.

  4. Once again, Tavis thinks that Black Americans are supposed to bow down to his opinions just b/c he puts together the State of the Black Union…ahem…naw….and black people are not stupid and we are the last to vote for someone b/c of race. Hence…black people not jumping on Obama’s ban wagon until after HILLARY..proved not to be the right person for America.

Also, I wonder what is up with Condi? She keeps acting as if she woke up…

  5. LWB - Living while black

#26 Well said, black people do need to wake up but unfortunately they won’t. The black experience (slavery, racism, poverty, etc) is something blacks will NEVER recover from. The black race is at the bottom of the barrel, and ignorant blacks fall right into the bafoonery trap when it comes to the media, lack of education, etc. I am so disgusted where we are as a race in today’s society.

As far as China, wake up people banning blacks from their bars are just the beginning.
In a few years don’t be surprised if we see white only, or colored only signs on bathrooms and water fountians.

Watch CNN tonight @9pm, WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!

It’s really bothering me that some of the comments in this post about the issue in bejing are extremely racist. I fully understand the upset but why respond with racial slurs against all asian people? It’s makes us look just as bad. And if you read the post carefully, it’s the establishment owners in the area that are complaining about being forced to refuse black people. Just my opinion. I’ve lived with discrimination my entire life as pretty much all of us black people have, but just because in general a group of people may seem racist doesn’t mean all of them are.

  7. Question??

I have a question. What the hell you’ll want Obama to do for Black people? Get us out of jail? Give us reprations for slavery? Hold our hands and sing kumbuya? Just exactly what is you’ll want? He aint God, he cant stop racism, he cant make everyone love each other. Obama can come to the black community and give speeches on how we need to change, but dosent that usually go in one ear and out the next. So what is you’ll want him to do for us?? The man aint perfect, he’s going to make mistakes. Is it because he is a black man that he has to hold our hands and help us along the way? The man is running for United States of America not the United States of Black America. Their are other races living in this country besides blacks, he has to be for all the people. Obama is working hard to fulfill one of MLK dream which is blacks will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by content of their character. Obama has been dragged thru the fire but yet maintains diginity and intelligence, now that says a lot about his character. And today he is proving to whites that we blacks are not as ignorant as they may think. The man is just a man, not the saviour of the black community. If you want to be saved, seek ye first the kingdom of God. If you’ll really ready to do somthing as a black community read Malcom X speech The Ballot or the Bullet, it provides a great guideline.

I doubt the Olympics story is true. As someone who frequents China’s biggest cities, I’ve never seen this happen. In fact, i will often see the OPPOSITE happen, as in people want to talk to you because you’re so “rare” there. And wtf, Mongolians??? Did they just throw that in for good measure?

  9. kele

Tavis: so everyone is overlooking everything tavis said….but hey its the truth
    . so obama is black
. so he has it hard
. so he might make history

but just because all of that is might happen or the color of his skin…it doesn’t mean he gets treated different than any other politician…b/c obama is black he should have came to the state of the black union..because it wasn’t for his color trust he wouldn’t got this far….and u know…b/c half his voters are ppl who are my g-ma age and up who think they should vote for him just b/c of that and i admit some do actually think for a minute if he is okay for the position of president…but not many…and then the other half is yes ppl he has actually gained rightfully b/c of his views, character, and just because he is great for the postion…however as black ppl and as young black ppl we need to stop lending our voice just because and ask quesiton about everything b/c if we don’t someone who doens’t give a shit like some racial chineese….lol…or white american are….and they gonna kick him down…if ask the hard question maybe he might just make into the white house…so tavis doesn’t need to sit down he need to continue b/c yes the world has changed but not that DAMN much and obama prolly has seen the real deal….ppl want him dead…and he knows that some of those old ways are really old…

I was not saying that rap music and “black” culture represents all black people, but we know now that that is what sells so why try to make that the overwhelming snapshot of black american. white companies are making money hand over fist by putting that image out there, but we have to be responsible. I’m not saying that all rap is bad or that it is wrong to see strippers, but come on. There is a serious lack of diversity in the images people see about black folks and somehow most black people defend the same insane sterotypes as gospel.

Why is china getting away with banning blacks and mongolians from bars in beijing. I don’t hear enough people being outraged about them getting away with placing the band on just two groups of people. Once again we are Asia disrespecting us when will we learn that the world has very little respect for blacks. I’m sad that the games are in that country. The committee that selects the country to hold the olympics should work like hell and dig deeper to make sure that racist banning of particular group of people from any race won’t come out weeks before the games start. Please do a better job next time. This is suppose to be a time when the world comes together and celebrate its best athletes and now we are dealing with racism in the OLYMPICS. I’m just real sad.
