POLITICS: OBAMA’S LEAD GROWS / RALPH NADER ON OBAMA / PRO-OBAMA AD ON MTV & COMEDY CENTRAL
Wednesday, July 30, 2008

A recent Gallup Poll shows Sen. Barack Obama leading Sen. John McCain 49-40 percent of national registered voters. The margin is the largest for Obama over McCain since Gallup began tracking the general election in March.
The AFL-CIO, the largest federation of unions in the United States, is launching a major effort in order to further dispel ongoing rumors surrounding the Democratic presidential candidate. The organization is set to send mailers to more than 600,000 union homes in battleground states such as Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The mailers will allow union members to “meet Obama” and better understand where he stands on issues such as job creation, health care reform and worker’s rights.
A majority of AFL-CIO’s membership is considered part of the working-class demographic, a key voting bloc that supported Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and is likely to play a huge role in November’s election.
OBAMA SUPPORTERS IN ‘POLITICAL SLAVERY’

At a recent press conference and campaign rally in Austin, Texas, independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader claimed that those who vote for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as the “least worst candidate” are trapped in “political slavery.”
During the event, an elderly woman asked, “What is your answer to people, including myself, who believe that the votes you get will take away from the Democratic party and ensure McCain wins? People who say that a vote for you is a vote for McCain.”
Nader responded, “Madam, do you think I’m a second-class citizen?”
The two then engaged in a tense exchange:
“I’d like for you to answer my question,” said the woman.
“No, because that question implies that somehow I am less equal in running for election than two crooked politicians in Washington,” he said. “You are a political bigot, wittingly or unwittingly.”
Last month, Nader commented that Obama was attempting to “talk white” and added that his candidacy was appealing to “white guilt”:
“I haven’t heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos,” said Nader of Obama. “Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What’s keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn’t want to appear like Jesse Jackson?”
He continued: “He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically, he’s coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it’s corporate or whether it’s simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up.”
Nader, considered one of the most influential figures in American history, has run for president four times. In 1992, he ran as a write-in candidate for the New Hampshire Republican and Democratic primaries, among others. In 1996 and 2000, he was the Green Party’s nominee and in 2004, he ran as an independent, although he was endorsed by the Reform Party.
PRO-OBAMA AD ON MTV & COMEDY CENTRAL
MoveOn.org has launched a new pro-Obama ad targeting young voters to air on MTV and Comedy Central, both owned by Viacom Networks.
MTV reversed its policy of not accepting political advertising last month, and this will be the first campaign advertising to run nationally on Comedy Central.

Nader is one of those gnats that just won’t go away with a swat of the hand. He may mean no harm, but he’s just annoying. The guy really serves no purpose in politics and really doesn’t deserve his share of oxygen. How can he bash Obama for not running a “keeping it real” type campaign? Obama doesn’t appeal to white guilt, he appeals to colorless change.
But most importantly, who is Ralph Nader influential to?! I’m getting tired of everyone wanting Obama to be “Super Politcian Man” with an “SP” embroidered on his chest or something. The man is taking it one day at a time. You haven’t heard him speak on every issue yet because it’s July. The dust from Hillary battle is still settling.
Crooked politician, huh? So what does that make you Ralph?

Ralph Nader is saying some very powerful stuff wherther you agree or disagree. There are a lot of scam loan facilities in the poor neighborhoods. I believe the class that’s most overlooked is the poor vote. Everyone wants the middle class vote because that’s the vote that most represents the belief system of America. You might not like what he says because it’s truth and truth hurts sometimes.
Listen my fellow black people. Don’t vote for Barack because he’s black, vote for him if you believe he’s the most competent for the job. Voting him for because he’s black and only because he’s black is very dangerous.

Ok, sure, there’s a lot of things placed in our neighborhoods that are doing more harm than good. Nader is speaking the truth about what’s going on in these neighborhoods, but shit, when is the last time HE HIMSELF ate a plate of soul food?
I understand where Nader is coming from but come on. Obama is not running the typical “black campaign” for a reason. He’s including both sides because thats what a politician should do. It’s extremely close-minded of Nader to suggest that Obama should be out there in Central Park breakdancing and handing out campaign buttons. Or freestyling on the mic at a local block party in Philly, while rhyming his name with llama, comma, ganja or sauna.
Please get over the fact that Obama is black. Recognize that he is qualified to run this country and accept it.

J. Dakar, if you want to reference various polls on here, please put the most recent ones. The Gallup poll you are referring to is from last week. I just went and read today’s gallup poll and it’s only a four point spread for Obama (46-42). From all the polls I have seen that is about as big as his lead gets. Rasmussen only has him up by two, and like every other poll it’s around that area 4 points above to actually being below McCain. People check out these polls and other data for yourself, whether something of you like it or not this race is tight and it shouldn’t be with the way the republicans have done the last 8 years.

Please do not insult the intelligence of every person of color to assume that they do not have enough sense to vote for a quality candidate for president. I am tired of people ( particularly black ones) using this as a way to pretend they are ” concern” when they are really just being insulting and over-bearing.
Ralph Nader has been doing this mess for years. If you are a fool enough to vote for him as if you are proving something, then you deserve all the suffering you experience under a Republican president.

J. Dakar, please do not try to lead these people on this blog along. That poll you are referring to is from last week and the new gallup poll as of July 30th only has Obama up by 4 points. And most national polls I read are around that area or even have McCain ahead. That’s been the big question that is on all the political sites, why isn’t Obama ahead by 15+ points. Past elections, even the dems that didn’t eventually win the presidency were ahead in the summer by at least 10+ pts. Obama is dead even with McCain. Obama’s lead is not growing and neither is McCain, but I read on Rasmussen where the group of undecided voters are growing and most of that group identify themselves as democrats.

I kinda feel Nader on what he is saying, but you can’t change the world in one day…we as black people have to ease our way into these positions of power, we can’t go in swinging and saying Black is Beautiful and all that other preachy things, no matter what we believe. Doing that is a way to get yourself knocked out of the election primaries, because Whites definitely won’t go for it. Like I said, he has a point, but to be so outspoken about the “Truth” will get you nowhere. Look at Nader, after 4 tries, he has yet to become president. I wonder why. Now on the other hand, while there is this stigma out there of picking the lesser of two evils…this won’t ever go away because while you and I may be Democrats and may agree on some of the same issues, there may be others that we can’t see eye to eye on. In that case, you just have to weigh what’s most important to you and make a decision. Barack is the candidate for change, however slow it may be…I’ll take it. People will be ready to say (when he’s elected), I told you so and he hasn’t done anything, just to say we made a mistake but the thing is, nothing happens overnight. While we may want immediate relief for many things, some we may just have to accept as Barack will be laying the groundwork for change, something that someone else after him will continue. I hope to God that Nader doesn’t mess this up for US as he did in the Gore/Bush election. Believe it or not, in a way his votes that he gets are throwaway votes because in a system where majority counts, he will take some votes away from the Democratic party as he did in the previous election where if it was just between Democrats and Republicans then, the Dems would have a better chance. I do appreciate choices though, we need other options and the respect that we can think differently, that’s why you can’t really be mad at Nader…it’s the voters who need to realize that. If you have to…look at it as the LESSER OF TWO EVILS…THAT WAY WE WON’T HAVE A REPEAT OF THE BUSH TRAGEDY!

I can understand where Nader is coming from, but only on a very low level. In a time as crucial as now when the economy is down the drain, people are losing their jobs left and right, and gas is damn near $5, it would be extremely dangerous for Obama to run a campaign based strictly on race. Though the minority communities are always the hardest hit in any crisis, he would be isolating himself from the rest of a nation if all he spoke about is change in black communities. He’s not running for president of BET. He’s runing for president of the US which happens to include a multitude of races. And in all reality, its taken Bush and his administration 8 years to destroy the economic state and everything you would think America stands for, so change will not be immediate. Everyone can identify with the need for change and evolution at this point in time. People keep saying he’s not experienced enough…blah blah blah. Bush was thought to be experienced and look where we are now? Over $400 BILLION in debt as a country.
Lets stop focusing so much on the fact that Obama is black but that he is qualified and the best person for the job.

NADER NEEDS TO SIT THE HELL DOWN
YES OBAMA IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON IN THE WORLD. MORE THAN HANNAH MONTANA AND RHIANNA,. THIS IS BECAUSE PPL ARE EXCITED ABOUT HIM WE ARE READY FOR THAT CHANGE. HE DIDNT ASK FOR 200,000 GERMANS TO COME HEAR HIM SPEAK. THEY CAME FREELY. THEY WISH HE WERE THEIR PRESIDENT. BUT HE WILL BE OURS. MCCAIN AND NADER ARE BOTH JEALOUS. MCCAIN WISH HE HAD THE POWERFUL MOVEMENT AND MEDIA COVERAGE AS OBAMA. THE NEWS SENT 3 OF THEIR TOP REPORTERS TO REPORT ON OBAMAS OVERSEAS TOUR. THEY SENT NONE FOR MCCAIN’S. YES MCCAIN IS A WAR VERTERAN BUT THATS DOESNT MEAN HE WILL DO ANTTHING AND EVERYTHING TO HELP THIS COUNTRY. HE MIGHT OF FOUGHT FOR THIS COUNTRY, BUT IS HE READY TO SERVE IT? SERVE AND REPESENT THE YOUNG BLACK SINGLE WOMAN ON WELFARE OR THE YOUNG BLACK MAN TRYING TO HELP HIS FAMILY AND FUTRTHER HIS EDUCATION? OR HOW ABOUT ME A YOUNG BLACK WOMAN WHO IS STRUGGLING TO GET LOANS AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO GO TO SCHOOL. IT IS EASIER FOR ME TO GET ON WALFARE THAN IT IS FOR ME TO GET AN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP TO GO TO COLLEGE. THATS A SHAME. MCCAIN WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT THAT?

^^^#!19 Crucial, i have to agree with you. Nader’s statements are slightly valid. But in order for Obama to win over the hearts of America he HAS to appeal to white voters. He’s not just running to be the black president but for Prez of the US.
Still, Ralph Nader is clearly stupid and has to have been bribed to run for prez. Now me? I don’t even LIKE politicians. I think they’re twisted, which is how you play the game in the world of politics. Hillary, Obama, McCain, they’re all the same breed to me. But if you’re choosing the lesser of two evils? CLEARLY the most evil is McCain who’s proposed policies would entirely ruin our country’s infrastructure. We’d be sent back to the dark ages if he wins. It really bothers me to think about that.
I dont entirely trust Obama, because no politicians “hands are clean” like Obama said himself. But he’s still loads better than McCain.
Ralph Nader is the one treating Obama like a second-class citizen, as if Obama should appeal to black voters alone. So does Ralph Nader actually think that he’S the black president? That he can speak for mistreated black people?
Come on, get that sh** outta here…

As far as Obama stay away from certain balck issues is because he doesn’t want to come off as a pro Black politician. I understand it. He wants to be elected. And white America will not vote a candidate they see as a threat. Someone who is going to constantly point out the injustince in the system. But like I said I understand the logic, Obama has to get the white votes and he has to seem like he has their best interest at heart also. Like my grandmother used to all ways tell me. “Son, you have to learn how to kiss ass before you can kick it”

Nader gets on my last nerve…he has no chance of becoming President, and in every Presidential election he pops up criticizing the Democratic candidate primarily. He knows he’ll never be President, but he’s an attention whore and (I believe) he’s being funded by the GOP to hurt the Democratic party’s chances in November.

Someone really needs to get Ralph Nader’s ass on up outta here, because he’s going to make this campaign really hard for Obama to win. Y’all remember what happened back in 2000 win Al Gore almost won it but he lacked the votes that Nader took when the Independents voted for Nader so thats who really need to focus on.
He does this everytime a general election comes up, so the Democrats need to really pull together this time around. Because he suits no purpose but to make sure no Democrat gets in.

A gnat? Serves no purpose in politics? You shouldn’t open your mouth when the sh!t that comes out of it is full of ignorance.
The Great Obama. The first time he ran for political office was for the Illinois House of Representatives (this is state not US). In order to get on the ballot in Illinois every candidate must gather signatures. What Obama did was send in a dozen Harvard attorneys to challenge all the signatures until none of the other 5 candidates could get on the ballot. Including the 12 year incumbent. Do you think a 12 year incumbent is “non-viable”? Obviously she is. He abused the system to eliminate all the other choices.
After that he ran for the US House of Representatives. He tried to do the same thing, but failed because the Republicans were automatically allowed on the ballot. He lost the election.
Next up the Senate. Obama’s campaign discovered that Ryan had had a messy divorce with his ex-wife, Jeri Ryan. Jeri Ryan was an actress, she portrayed Seven of Nine in Star Trek Voyager. In the custody battle for their son, she alledged that her husband, Jack Ryan, had asked her to go to sex clubs and perform sex in public, which she refused. Jack Ryan dropped out of the race to prevent any embarrassment to his son.
His destruction and misuse of the democratic system is enough to make me weary.
I don’t support McCain any more than I support Obama, but you call Nader a gnat, insignificant and crocked? Wow.
Nader makes $3 million a year (thanks to GM) but donates it all to organizations while living off $25,000 a year. He does not own a house or a car (he rides a bicycle). He does not have a family. “My comment for Nadar is what are you doing to fix these issues that you are so deeply concerned about?”
Read above. The real question is what is Obama doing? What has Obama done?
“Still, Ralph Nader is clearly stupid and has to have been bribed to run for prez.”
You sir are clearly stupid. Bribed to run for president? Bribed by who or what exactly? The corporations that he has fought, and succeeded in, keeping in check?
“YES OBAMA IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON IN THE WORLD. MORE THAN HANNAH MONTANA AND RHIANNA”
I stopped reading right there.
—What has Obama done?
Senator Obama’s fight for universal children’s health care in Illinois.
His success bringing Republicans and Democrats together (a huge selling point for me in general) on bills such as the one in Illinois requiring police interrogations and confessions to be videotaped.
His leadership on ethics reform in Washington (the bill that lobbyists and special interests are complaining about right now has his name on it).
His bill to make the federal budget far more transparent and accessible to Americans via the Internet – we could use that openness in Texas.
And his vital work with Republicans to lock down nuclear weapons around the world.
So, we have two Mickey Mouse items from his time in the state Senate of Illinois, an ethics bill that was weaker than what Republicans like Jim DeMint wanted, and a couple of bills that Obama tagged along with Republicans on, that would have been passed with or without his support.
That’s it? You mean, you take that unimpressive set of “accomplishments” and combine it with repeating “change,” “hope,” “unity,” and “yes, we can” 4 million times, and that’s good enough to make you President of the United States?

@ Nader
SA man who makes 3 million will donate most of his money to live off 25 000$…does that even sound normal to you? Did you really believe this crock of sh*t statement when you typed it! Give me a break! Seriously, please re-read that sentence!
IThe mere fact that nader isn’t married and doesn’t have some sort of immediate family makes me nervous. How does he connect to the millions of families living in the United States if he happends to not have any. He can understand our issues
Obama is a well rounded candidate…he has a family, he has both of the populous races in America in his blood. He happends to be the ideal candidate but because of his blackness, he is being doubted!
And just the mere fact that Nader is associated with all these organizations just gives an extreme advantage and easy lee-way to those advocacy groups who normally roam around washington.
No thank you!

Does that sound normal? Absolutely not. Which is exactly why he has my vote. The fact that it is abnormal and true. Mile Allen did a story on him when he ran in 2000 and it’s all fact.
He estimated that he has made $13 million to $14 million in royalties, honoraria, interest income, and writing and television fees beginning in 1967. That was two years after he burst to prominence with his hardback sensation “Unsafe at Any Speed,” which focused on the Chevrolet Corvair to argue that the American auto industry emphasized style and profits at the expense of safety.
With his idealistic young “Nader’s Raiders” taking on the federal government from campuses around the country, he became such a celebrity that in 1975, Ladies Home Journal commissioned Nader and actor Robert Redford (”Two Fascinating Men”) to interview each other. A Newsweek cover showed a sword and suit of armor superimposed over “Consumer Crusader Ralph Nader.” Nader built such an indelible image as the little guy’s champion that a coal miner willed his tiny estate to him.
Nader, 66, who is single, said he has made $200,000 to $300,000 a year just on speeches for 30 years. Income from writings, television appearances and interest is on top of that. But he said he does not take a salary from any of his groups and lives on just $25,000 a year.
He last owned a car (a ‘49 Studebaker) in the late ’50s. He went years without a television set but now has a tiny black-and-white; reception is an adventure. He rents an apartment near Dupont Circle and often stays at the family home in Winsted, Conn. He writes his books on what he calls a “perilous” Underwood typewriter. He keeps meaning to buy a new ribbon.
Nader has plowed millions into his own projects, including the establishment of Public Interest Research Groups in 22 states. He has started several research centers devoted to health and safety, has taken on the standardized-test industry and has championed Native American rights, child protection and solar energy education.
More recently, he has put about $200,000 into organizing civic-action projects at Princeton University, from which he graduated in 1955, and Harvard Law School, from which he graduated in 1958.
Read tha article… http://www.commondreams.o...g/headlines/061800-01.htm
He does have a family that he is very close with, he just doesn’t have a wife and children of his own. He is a very intelligent and compassionate man.
“How does he connect to the millions of families living in the United States if he happends to not have any. He can understand our issues”
He does have a family just not a wife/kids. He is FAR more involved with the everyday lives of us, the American people, than any of the other candidates are. Look at what he has done for us in comparison to Obama and McCain.
And advantage from something he has invested his time and money on? Nooo way. Really? That’s unfair? Tell Obama to spend time on founding an organization instead of traveling the world preaching abot what he plans on doing. DO SOMETHING.
