We should start boycotting movie studios and a lot of these white actors who are simply not doing enough producing and support to make sure that Black screenplays/ women are getting their share of the pie…..Just something to think about my people!

It just seems as that at any level of success (or when observing success), black people tend to find it easier to blame the white man than take the initiative to produce…

I’m just all for protecting artists’ creative freedom. It doesn’t really make any more sense to boycott Universal or Miramax for not using more blacks than it does to boycott whoever made Trois or Soul Plane or Two Can Play That Game or The Wood or The Brothers or The Best Man for not using more whites.

@ #31 I do agree with your first paragraph, however I’m not quite understanding why you would put Trois, and Soul Plane in the same category as The Wood, The Brothers or The Best Man, and even Two Can Play That Game. Those were some of the first positive movies that showed black americans in successful roles. Those aren’t movies that should be boycotted. Instead the ghetto stereotypical movies should be boycotted, they’d get the message then. They only produce movies that we flock to see, and if we stop supporting those movies, they’d make different ones.

On a lighter note I love Gabrielle Union, she’s beautiful, articulate and good actress.

All great comments. I think another thing that we don’t consider is how bootlegging movies affects the making of black movies. Studios look at box office numbers, especially opening weekend numbers. Black audiences typically drive black movies and when so many of us “get it on bootleg”, the opening weekend numbers decrease which in turn makes major studios less likely to take on black projects (with the exception of black actors that are already proven money makers). I think so many people look at how something directly affects their own wallet in terms of going to the movies, but in the end we are making it harder for up and coming black actors, writers, producers, etc. Then we end up in the same old place talking about boycotting studios instead of looking at how we can be part of the solution by supporting black films at the box office.

Just something to think about.

BTW, I love Gabby’s dress. Black skin looks so good in jewel tones. But, I think she has on too much make-up.

Gabrielle looks beautiful as usual. She stays on point. At first I use to question why Gabrielle and other black actors kept doing the same roles, but I have a better view of what’s going after reading that Essence article with her, Sanna, and Nia on the cover. They face the dilemma of either taking the roles and at least have a consistent acting career, or take the non-standard roles which unfortunately are offered every blue moon. Of course consistent work is more beneficial to an actor’s career. When the same roles are offered to them, they can’t rebel and turn them down all the time. They have to eventually adjust or give in somehow to keep the bills paid.I know it has to be frustrating as African American actors to feel limited in their career. I hope things will progress quicker in black hollywood, it’s definitely needed.

Keep in mind when you see pictures of your favorite movie stars you do not know when photos have been taken. They give you a supposed time frame when certain pictures are published, but that’s not necessarily so. That’s why when you see certain stars they may look “fat” one day and then the next, they’re skinny. There is a time lapse between many of these photos.

I didn’t say she had work done to be negative. the previous posters were wondering why she looked a little different and they couldn’t put a finger on it. yes she is and always has been gorgeous. that doesn’t change the fact that she recently obviously had work done. and it is OBVIOUS to anyone who knows anything about plastic surgery and I work for one of the best. it’s the norm in her profession and it’s not bad for people to “call it out” persay.

What I see is a beautiful actress working in an industry that is not so welcoming of black actresses. Someone who should not necessarily be blamed for performing similar roles, if indeed that is the case, because black actresses aren’t often offered diverse, meaty, serious roles that aren’t stereotypically ethnic and/or comedic. Those that would supposedly show the range of the actress. BTW I enjoy my share of those ethnic/comedic movies. If Hollywood thought it could make a banging buck on having actresses like Gabi play a lead role in a blockbuster project, it would. Trust that.

Under the stated circumstances, how do professionals like her gain favor from the audience in the projects she appear in or at least give the power brokers the impression the support is there? She needs positive buzz yall. While we pick her and others apart, let’s show them some love too. Believe me, we will all benefit from it! We love the internet. What’s wrong with sending some e-mails to the studio heads letting them know we respect Angela, Sanaa, Gabrielle, etc. and want to see them more often and in more appealing projects.

Um Tell that to Kerry Washington and Angela Bassett both are great actresses and will shit on Gaby in the Acting department. Underrated how about OVERRATED.

Yeah, we all my see Gabby as being beautiful. And we may think she was “perfect”. But maybe “she” didn’t feel this way. I am pretty sure there is something everyone wants to tweak about themselves. And to someone else, they are just fine. And for the ones saying they don’t, to some they should. Halle and Janet both say they don’t feel beautiful. Now if that doesn’t sound crazy, I don’t know what else does. But hey, we can’t tell someone how to feel about themselves. If Gabby has had any nip and tucks, she has done it tastefully. PS isn’t new in the biz, but it is still taboo amongst blacks.

All of your posts are hitting on one of my pet peeves with Blacks and Hollywood. See, here’s where I don’t fault white folk, I fault us. The same roles are given to the same black women, Halle and Beyonce. Now, you can call me a hater, you can say I’m not satisfied somehow, but let me explain myself. Halle made a promise after she won her Oscar, that this was dedicated to the nameless women of color, but she also promised to help uplift other black actresses. Now, I’m not trying to be funny, all I have seen is Halle promoting Halle. I love Beyonce, can’t wait to see Obsessed. Unlike Halle, she worked with Jennifer Hudson, but at the same time, its easy to uplift someone who the public is already familiar with. Roles like the Etta James film should have gone to a black unknown starving actress instead of the same black woman. I don’t fault B for playing her (B is also the producer), but we need to understand that actresses like Union are underused because the roles are generated between two or three women, and we accept it, and they allow it. Now, if that’s not black on black crime, I don’t know what is.

She is holding her lips tight against her teeth. Now notice the next few pics. You can see the dimples. She looks her regular self. Sometimes certain smiles can contort our facial expressions. I really think that it’s just the way she is smiling.

In response to someone’s comment on here… I met Gabrielle Union, and I went to school with the niece in that picture… 1–no, it’s not her real hair, and 2–no, Gabrielle isn’t a total beezy, she’s actually REALLY nice. I have met both of her sisters, and her niece (as stated above) and (true story) I have spent three days and two nights at Gabrielle’s personal home.

She is, without a doubt, indeed gorgeous and exceptionally kind…. and tall (I am 5′7” and she stood a few inches taller than I, and she was wearing running shoes).

For those of you who bad mouthed her… you really shouldn’t just base your judgments on her films, those are roles she is assigned and paid to play. Just because she was an evil cheer-leader in a film or a crazy diva doesn’t mean she is one in her personal life.
