Why do people keep going on about Rihanna’s originality…?

This is 2008…almost everything that we have now in music and fashion hasn’t been done already. So really theres no such thing has “originality” these days, but it can look like its new if the artist puts a different spin on it to update it or something, but it’s all the same- recycled and repackaged.

Now if you really think that Rih’s style is copied from Kelis or FeFe Dobson than some of you really need to read more and expand your mind because your general knowledge is VERY limited especally when it comes to fashion. Thank you for the brief history lesson because some people’s minds don’t know anything about the pop/rockstar look past Kelis when there’s so many that have done it before. Did people forget that Jada Pinkett, Toni Braxton, Nia Long, Halle (Boomerang, Mission Impossible, etc) rocked very short hair back in the 90’s and women started cutting their hair and wore the gel look, the short spiked look, flips or the short curly hair on top with the sides cut. Nothing is original it is all a cycle and the key thing is to know when to recycle something.

When Alicia Keys first came out with the corn row braids in zig zags and beads on the ends evereyone was digging it though that was a recycled style from the 70’s. She knew when to use the style.

Beyonce with the wild wigs was done by the supremes, Tina turner, pointer sisters, and the list can go on, but when she reintroduced the idea of it being okay to wear wigs and look good in them women started buying wigs again like crazy.

Kelis wowed people with her hair and it was great. Women did begin cutting their hair, but many were still skeptical because they knew Kelis was alternative, but Her high waist jeans still inspire many women today to get their stomachs flat and rock them.

Rihanna I think made women feel more comfortable to cut their hair for one because she was a mainstream artist. Also believe it or not she’s a lightskin girl with light eyes. Back in the days and still now it was stereotypical that the most beautiful women were lightskin light eyes and long hair. To hair a girl take one of those attributes and flip it and still be considered sexy by many men made women say okay here’s another trend changer. They did the same with Jada when she first cut all her hair off so it’s repeating again. I think that’s why people say it’s original. Whether it was her or the label that brought this idea up, it was a smart one in my eyes. That’s just my take on it.

@ Malcolm Rihanna is doing her thing and proved that she was here to stay, but she isn’t really a U.S. based singer. She’s bigger in European countries and even with 7 singles she still hasn’t sold over 1.5 million in the u.s. And ciara was an opening act for Rihanna on her tour because Rihanna is bigger than her outside of the us, but ciara headlines in the u.s. and rihanna still doesn’t have that much popularity in the u.s. to do that.
I don’t think that her having so many singles is only to boost her album sales in the u.s. but also in areas outside of the u.s. because europoeans love rihanna so Def jam is probably just trying to get her to sell more albums and it’s working.
Disturbia seems like a good track, but you can tell CB co wrote it cause it kind of reminds me of forever. But for now you can’t knock her hustle because she is definitely working hard.

Listen, I give props when it’s due and she’s done a great job of making a name for herself recently, but I honestly just don’t get her appeal. She came to my hometown when she first came out, she performed pon de replay (free park concert). However every other performance I’ve seen of her since then has been the same, she really needs to own the stage, only then I believe she will be a force. Honestly, I don’t hate the girl at all. I just think she is REALLY overrated. I must say her live performances have gotten better and better. Even artists who are more talented than her like Keyshia can’t do live shows very well. Then again, it seems like her songs are tailored for her and they seem a little…simple. Presently, nobody in her element can really be compared to her and be able to dispute the lack of talent she has. Rihanna uses her image to camouflage her lack of talent and people are falling for it. Her image is very manufactured. She said she didn’t even listen to punk rock before she conjured up this style to separate herself from Beyonce. She’s getting cool points from some people for being different, but it’s not even real. It’s a gimmick and a media ploy to garner more attention. Also, think about it, other female R&B artists bring some talent to the table whether it be vocal skills, stage presence, song writing, playing an instrument, dancing, etc. Some people trash Ashanti for not having great vocals, but she at least writes her songs and many of them are hits. What can we say about Rihanna as an artist? Absolutely nothing but her wardrobe, and at the end of the day that has nothing to do with her music.

In my mind, Ri-Ri has the potential to get bigger because of youth, promoters (remember, Beyonce had top of the line promoters it isn’t because she has the strongest voice in the industry), and a willingness to work hard. That’s like me, I have my education, but I understand that my students still have untapped potential so they could possibly accomplish more than me. Like I said, the same complaints that are being launched about Ri-Ri have been launched about Beyonce. Lets get over the light skinned thing, I never remember this girl being that dark.

Wow. This post is funny in so many ways. I have never seen someone be so overhyped ever. I agree Rihanna is on her hustle, but to even go fanatic over this girl is something else. Within one year she cut her hair, and start wearing darker clothes to coincide with the release of her album and now she’s the next greatest thing to some people? Come on now. I agree artists switch their image up, but not to be completely fake to who they really are.

And for those who say Rihanna is a hard worker, and comparing her to Beyonce. Are you serious? Beyonce has headlined a true worldwide tour in over thirty countries, I’m talkin Japan, Russia, to sold out crowds seeing over millions. With only ONE person opening. Not a thirty minute set, but almost two hours of true performing. While in movies commercials, etc that’s truly working. Now you may say, oh she’s older…true. But at 16 she was in a mega group that went on to sell nearly 12 million albums with TWOTW. 12 Million albums! And at 19 she had crazy number one singles, millions in sales, kudos for great VOCAL performances, It didn’t take, a rock/punk, contrived image to do it, but talent.

Rihanna is her own lane, I don’t hate the girl, but it’s so funny to see how people are seriously arguing for this girl like her talent is worth it. I bet a lot of yall in here don’t even have the album, because if you did she would have more than a million sales in the U.S. I guess image dominates substance.

A lot of truth has been posted in the last couple of comments, so I won’t reiterate what was said. But I will say this, people really need to stop saying this girl sings R&B because she doesn’t. She sings pop. I believe the only reason she is categorized as R&B is because she is black, which is a slap in the face to real R&B singers everywhere. Pick any of her songs and then picture a white girl or a girl of any other race singing it in the same style and melody. Would it still be R&B then? I think not. Nothing about this girl’s music defines rhythm and blues. It was mind boggling to see her win an award for best female Soul and R&B artist at the ‘07 AMAs. When she did her acceptance speech, she even said she couldn’t believe it.

On the real, she really needs to think about slowing down, because the pop crowd can be very wishy washy. Releasing all of these videos is ridiculous if the album is not even multi platinum. When the next “it” girl comes along that can sing and/or dance her ass off, people will most likely easily steer in the next “it” girl’s direction without a second thought. It’ll be interesting to see how long she will last, because singers that rely soley on looks eventually fade away.

217 She’s not the reason those artists who don’t get promotion they probably don’t put in work that she does. If they really want to be successful there are ways of doing it and get a name for your self. They can go perform in small concerts like the House of Blues to make revenue. It is a business at the end of the day whether you like her or not she is still getting paid. Sometimes you gotta make things happen for yourself. So what if she has three albums and so what if they are different they are suppose to be. Don’t knock some one else’s because she is succeeding where others have failed.
