She did have a tour where she headlined Ciara and toured by herself overseas so technically you’re correct, but Akon was the bigger star for the North America leg at the time selling over 3 million in the US alone, therefore he recieved top billing (which were 25% of the total dates). And those sellouts you are referring to is going a bit far. The 40,000+ sellout was a FREE concert. And how many 20,000 seat arenas did Bat Girl sell out? Rihanna has a very difeerent fanbase and she knows how to pick a great song. She said Chris and the other guys did not write Disturbia for her but she took it after she heard it.

She said she also was the one that chose Umbrella and Unfaithful and not the record label. Beyonce has said that being a pop star includes knowing how to pick a song and rihanna knows what songs to pick, she can sing, she can dance, and she has always looks hot. She knows what she is doing. I am NOT comparing her to Beyonce b/c no one can touch Beyonce but she is doing her thing.

Why are people in this post so bitter? There’s no excuse for anyone who swagger jacks in the industry. Every star, yes every star has done it. That “well they took styles from who ever and revamped it into their style” is a bunch of BS. They took a style and added their name to it. I think people are angry because Rihanna was more successful with the black rockstar look than kelis and fefe dobson. Both ladies were good, but for some reason were unsuccessful and were not something the consumers wanted because after all the consumers are the ones who determine the popularity of an artist. Both Kelis and fefe dobson got their styles from people like Sheila E., Pebbles, and Paula Abdul so they too were not original they simply utilized an old style which is not a problem. If you don’t like what Rihanna is doing then don’t be a consumer plain and simple, but if she is famous there’s obviously a number of consumers who determined that she should be. Gwen Stefani also hugely successful because of her style taken from Cyndi Lauper and Gwen actually admits it. Nothing wrong with that because it made her successful.

I wish people would stop comparing this young lady to Beyonce who clearly is older and has had more years in the game. Give Rihanna a chance and some time. She’s only been out like 3 years. Let her have her fun.

@75 There is no way that Beyonce and Rhiana are alike, they are totally different, Rhiana is more of a Pop singer who has a large crossover audience and she really does not perform she only sings, no dancing, while Beyonce started in R&B, she only really went kinda of Pop with the release of B’Day, Beyonce has a crossover appeal put Beyone is an established performer, and she also acts and has her own clothing line, so Beyonce is in a different arena than Rhianna, the only thing they have in common is that they are Black females that are both successful in their singing careers, and they are both very attractive.

This is the reason Tianna posts the “What They Rocked” section and you all flock to it…looking to cop your favorite celebs looks. So if Rihanna is a biter & swagga jacker for gaining inspiration from artists who have come before her…so are you…and so am I.

I take her for what she is. “Good Girl Gone Bad” is a great album. Her voice may leave much to be desired, but the songs…the production was stellar. It was a fun R&B/Pop/Rock album. I didn’t expect much from it….I didn’t hold her to any type of standard. I like it for what it is. I still bump that album till this day. “Say It”. “Rehab”, “Sell Me Candy”, “Good Girl Gone Bad” ALL really good songs.

@cece no her hair wasn’t cut b/c there are high-school pics of her 16,17 yrs of age and her hair was medium length, i think a little past her shoulders. i think she started singing professionally at 18. then again maybe she had a weave in those pics too idk

at 146. her hair was short. she cut after her first album. they made her put weave back in for a girl like me because the label didnt like it.

it wasnt until good girl gone bad that she cut it again and dyed it black. no one saw ity until the video shoot so they couldnt do anything about it at that point.

This is 2008…almost everything that we have now in music and fashion hasn’t been done already. So really theres no such thing has “originality” these days, but it can look like its new if the artist puts a different spin on it to update it or something, but it’s all the same- recycled and repackaged.

Now if you really think that Rih’s style is copied from Kelis or FeFe Dobson than some of you really need to read more and expand your mind because your general knowledge is VERY limited especally when it comes to fashion. People keep saying rihanna is swagger jacking Kelis. Some one random poster started this mess and now everyone is saying the same thing. Okay, lets be logical. Kelis came before Rihanna, she was in the game since the late 90″s early 2000’s. Why then hasn’t she made as big an impact as Rihanna. She had her time so she should have shined. I love Kelis. To hair a girl take one of those attributes and flip it and still be considered sexy by many men made women say okay here’s another trend changer. They did the same with Jada when she first cut all her hair off so it’s repeating again. I think that’s why people say it’s original. Whether it was her or the label that brought this idea up, it was a smart one in my eyes. That’s just my take on it.

@ Malcolm Rihanna is doing her thing and proved that she was here to stay, but she isn’t really a U.S. based singer. She’s bigger in European countries and even with 7 singles she still hasn’t sold over 1.5 million in the u.s. And ciara was an opening act for Rihanna on her tour because Rihanna is bigger than her outside of the us, but ciara headlines in the u.s. and rihanna still doesn’t have that much popularity in the u.s. to do that.
I don’t think that her having so many singles is only to boost her album sales in the u.s. but also in areas outside of the u.s. because europoeans love rihanna so Def jam is probably just trying to get her to sell more albums and it’s working.
Disturbia seems like a good track, but you can tell CB co wrote it cause it kind of reminds me of forever. But for now you can’t knock her hustle because she is definitely working hard.

Honestly, I don’t hate the girl at all. I just think she is REALLY overrated. I must say her live performances have gotten better and better. Even artists who are more talented than her like Keyshia can’t do live shows very well. Then again, it seems like her songs are tailored for her and they seem a little…simple. Presently, nobody in her element can really be compared to her and be able to dispute the lack of talent she has. Rihanna uses her image to camouflage her lack of talent and people are falling for it. Her image is very manufactured. She said she didn’t even listen to punk rock before she conjured up this style to separate herself from Beyonce. She’s getting cool points from some people for being different, but it’s not even real. It’s a gimmick and a media ploy to garner more attention. Also, think about it, other female R&B artists bring some talent to the table whether it be vocal skills, stage presence, song writing, playing an instrument, dancing, etc. Some people trash Ashanti for not having great vocals, but she at least writes her songs and many of them are hits. I am a Beyonce fan, but I have to co-sign on what another poster said. Why do we keep comparing Ri-Ri to a close to 30 year old woman who has been out for a second? I’m sorry, but that’s not a fair comparison. In my mind, Ri-Ri has the potential to get bigger because of youth, promoters (remember, Beyonce had top of the line promoters it isn’t because she has the strongest voice in the industry), and a willingness to work hard. Beyonce has headlined a true worldwide tour in over thirty countries, I’m talkin Japan, Russia, to sold out crowds seeing over millions. With only ONE person opening. Not a thirty minute set, but almost two hours of true performing. While in movies commercials, etc that’s truly working. Now you may say, oh she’s older…true. But at 16 she was in a mega group that went on to sell nearly 12 million albums with TWOTW. 12 Million albums! And at 19 she had crazy number one singles, millions in sales, kudos for great VOCAL performances, It didn’t take, a rock/punk, contrived image to do it, but talent.

Look at other artists, that have re-released an album: Usher, Mariah. and Beyonce. All of them went multi-platinum before they even re-released their records. They didn’t solely depend on sales scattered in foreign countries to validate their re-releases.I find it very odd that she would re-release her album and she’s not even doing major numbers here.
