i like santogold! she’s breaking barriers & is very innovative! && she can admit that she doesnt have a great voice(humble non fake artists! thats what i like!) but can still rock the house! i can pop in one of her tracks if i have a bad day…5 stars!
I love alternative music, infact Janelle Monae and Little Jackie (Imani Copolla) are among my favorites. However, this song is a very POOR attempt. It was very difficult listening to it…i had to turn down my volume. Definately not impressed. Infact its a tad annoying and irritating.
Santogold? Is she talented? I mean what does she do? Sounds like something anybody could do. And she looks bummy…And Pharell can not sing. I guess the sheep of today have gotten so used to hearing fake singers like Tpain, Rihanna, and Chris Brown that even Pharell can be marketed as a singer. Hip Hop is dead.

Thanks to Carrie Ann Memememe and others for making me see that I wasn’t crazy. Alternative does not equal ‘anything not hip hop or R&B’. This is not ‘Alternative’. This is just garbage. (Totally respect the opinions of those who like this.)
And I like Pharrell and think he can sing. But sometimes when he just does that fake falsetto ishh, it just comes off like he’s just trying too hard.
If there’s a market for Santogold, great. However, just because the music industry is in a slump right now doesn’t mean we point to the music that sucks less and call it hot. This is a great time to discover good music in other genres. Good music is good music — regardless of the genre. And this isn’t it. (Do you really think in ten years you’re gonna say, “Damn, I been fiending for that ‘Santogold’ joint.)

@Let’s Not Lie – I hear you. And I didn’t really give it a solid listen… now, there’s no accounting for taste (so mine might not be anyone else’s). But I did check out a few songs when she first started popping up a month or so ago… I just don’t get the appeal. To me, the fact that she’s a competent woman of color and making music is cool. But there are far more interesting acts who *aren’t* of color — to me, we’re just kinda tolerating cause she’s a woman of color.
There’s a lot of stuff that’s both alternative AND great – some stuff by the Shins, Radiohead, N.E.R.D. (prior to the current album — I think Fly or Die was ingenious)… Nirvana’s short library is not to be missed. Then there’s stuff like The Smiths, The Cure, Morrissey still rocks and Billy Bragg. I love me some Kanye, John Legend, Jill Scott, Badu and Mint Condition… but to me, this is a great time to milk other genre’s for the best that THEY can offer. (Again – just my silly thoughts, but the songs are kinda quirky — almost pop-ish. Forget the argument about whether this is ‘Alternative’ or ‘R&B’ or ‘Dance’ or whatever — I just don’t think it’s good music — by any label.

@Devron but she’s just starting out. radiohead is genius and a lot of ppl don’t compare to them so that’s not fair to santi to compare her to them. i don’t think NERD is AS talented as ppl say they are. their current album has tracks that almost sound the same. pharell and chad are great at producing no doubt. the shins are definitely on another level too. the smiths, the cure they’re pioneers. kanye yeah badu most definitely better. i think john is a bit overhyped. i’m not a huge jill fan though i think she’s very talented and beautiful. and you forgot bjork who is amazing. so i mean i do agree w/you that santi is not the best artist out there and i don’t think anyone is portraying her to be such. she’s not really amazing in the grand scheme of things BUT she’s a newcomer that doesn’t fit into the little box that mainstream has set up for female performers. she doesn’t have a contrived image and she’s being real. she doesn’t sell sex or try to be anything but santi. that’s why ppl like her.
