This is very creative. It reminds of the grunge rock videos of the early ’90’s like nirvana.

It is unoriginal, she takes things that hasn’t been done in R&B yet and tries to be “different” and a lot of people fall for that “look at me im so different” persona she puts out. A lot of people don’t cross genres of music so if they listen to Rihanna its most likely they don’t listen to heavy metal or something of that nature. Alicia is a prolific writer but her vocals are not ground-breaking to me. I think its all relative to how old you are and what kind of singers you use as a frame of reference. The old school singers is the gauge I use to determine what a great singer sounds like to me.

Rihanna will be a superstar because she has that quality like Madonna, she’s rebellious, has international appeal, has a recordable voice, and can cross over into many different areas. I can see her going big in Hollywood too because she is definitely red carpet material. She is statuesque and her face and features are so distinct. I have to give it to her she is a star and is only 19. Someone mentioned Ashanti (and I do like Ashanti too) but Shan never had the appeal that
Rih has. Rih is already pulling in endorsement deals, not with maybelline or Loreal, but with GUCCI at only 19 years old. That tells you a lot about where her career is headed. Shanti never had that. Rihanna has appeal b/c she takes risks with her stlye and music. If there is one thing that irritates me about Beyonce, it’s that she rests on her laurels. Her look and sound have not evolved much from her DC days.

Beyonce is super talented, but she hardly steps out of her comfort zone. Being a “popstar” means continual reinvention-Madonna understands that, Christina Aguilera understands that and yes, Rihanna understands that. Sometimes your reinvention will be a huge success (i.e. “bad girl” Rihanna) or flop (i.e. Xtina’s retro look put her under the radar). Either way you have to switch it up sometime.

Beyonce has had the long blonde weave, glittery short dress style and boooty-bouncin music since she was a teen. I think it’s fair for anyone to say that she needs to go back to the drawing board. She is interesting as she is:beautiful, gifted and successful, but if she wants to maintain that “it” factor, she is going to have to find a new way to excite us, not just complacently wallow in her comfortable niche.

Rihanna’s image has been a cut above the rest for awhile-she is utterly the baddest in that department. Talent-wise I don’t think she holds up that well. As far as this video goes, it is very different from what is out right now. It’s edgy, for a more international audience. Her latest project, Good Girl Gone Bad steered her into a lane of her own. I’m thinking this move was to prepare us for what is to come from Rihanna. (We’ll have to see).
I feel that it is more of her record label molding her into the artist that they want her to be instead of her controlling her career. (I could be wrong). In any event I am proud of her, especially reppin for the carribbean
