Solange Knowles has exclusively sent Concrete Loop her new “freestyle”, a Dear John to the big wigs at the labels. She did it over Kanye West’s “Everything I Am” and here is what she said about the song on her blog, HADLEY STREET JOURNAL:
“Unfortunately I’m in an industry where diversity is not celebrated the way it should be. When some people see and hear something different it feels foreign to them and they don’t like that. Everyone has a choice of what they like and that’s a beautiful thing! But record labels, managers, publicist, journalist, media etc… have a tendency to see something work and try to reciprocate that with another artist thinking that’s what makes success. To me what makes success is letting people be truly who they are.
When I heard Kanye’s ‘Everything I Am,’ I instantly fell in love. I felt my story somewhere in his. I felt his frustration yet acceptance of who he was. So I decided to put my own little twist on it!”

I mean, this sounds like a desparate plea to HERSELF to believe she’s different. Talkin about “there’s nothing really r&b about me”…umm, you make r&b music. You sound exactly like a low rent version of your sister, especially on this song. My momma always said that when you have to repeatedly tell someone your a lady, you probably aren’t. Your actions, and in her case, her music, not some smart ass lyrics, should speak to how supposedly different she is. It takes a helluva lot more than a trendy Urban Outfitters-esque styist to make you different. Let’s be real, her music just isn’t THAT DIFFERENT. Santogold is different. N.E.R.D. is different. Solange is another light skinned r&b chick. When she can come to terms with that, as Keri Hilson, Ashanti, and many others have done, rather than battling herself at every turn, she might find some medicre level of success.
Ok I’m not feeling Solange as an artist, But I’m lovin’ the heck out of her style. I love how she balances retro with chic.

I just think that because she is Beyoncé’s sister she can’t help having the same manorisms as a person she was reared with. Other than that I love Solange. I love her style and her blog gives you a more clear picture of who she is as a person. I even liked her first album Solo Star.
Her ‘style’ or ‘personality,’ as some of you like to call it, is called marketing strategy people. It’s not real. It’s image creation. She’s about as real as that hair on her head.
