FASHION: OBAMA GETS CLOTHING LINE / VICTORIA SECRET + HBCUS / DANITY KANE FOR DOLLHOUSE JEANS
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Sketch for Obama’s official clothing line by Tracy Reese (Wash. Post)
With all the Obama tees being made and worn, you’d think Barack Obama himself would come out with a line. Well the Washington Post reported this week that his campaign signed on for a few top designers to create merchandise that would be sold online at his website:
The mix, available online next month, ranges from T-shirts to tote bags and will lend a bit of runway panache to the Obama brand. The list of participating designers, which includes Derek Lam, Isaac Mizrahi, Tracy Reese, Charles Nolan and Diane von Furstenberg, covers the full spectrum of the market, from high-end to inexpensive.
Other names have been bandied about but not confirmed: Beyoncé, Russell Simmons, Michael Bastian, Vera Wang. READ MORE
Wow, as if there weren’t enough Obama shirts to choose from, you know you have to get one from the official campaign itself. The clothing brand is expected to premiere during N.Y Fashion Week on September 9th…
PINK FOR HBCUs

Model for VS Collegiate collection (VS.com)
Victoria Secret is expected to add five HBCU schools (Howard University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T University, and Southern University) to their PINK Collegiate collection, which was released in June previously featuring 33 Universities. This came after a sophomore at Howard University expressed her disappointment about no HBCUs be considered on the list:
Reid e-mailed Victoria’s Secret to express her dismay and was upset when she received a response that she describes as “sugar-coated” and dismissive. Her disappointment materialized into a crusade to bring Pink onto the campuses of HBCUs. Early in July, she started a Facebook group “HBCU Ladies Wear Victoria’s Secret Pink Too” in an effort to encourage people to write to the company and complain about the HBCU oversight. By late July, the group had more than 400 Facebook members.
A few days after Reid’s initial e-mail, Richard A. Dent III, chief operating officer for Pink, contacted Reid through her Facebook group after someone forwarded him her complaint. “I reached out to her because she was a fan of the brand. I wanted her to know that we were not being insensitive, and we did have a plan,” says Dent, a graduate of Florida A&M University’s business school and a member of the school’s board of trustees. I love my Howard counterparts…so proactive! The HBCU PINK collegiate collection, which will feature the name and logos of the five schools announced, will be in their surrounded area stores starting November…
DANITY KANE FOR DOLLHOUSE JEANS

Looks like the ladies of Danity Kane are jumping into the denim industry. The girls premiered their collaborated jean line with Dollhouse Jeans on Tuesday at a private press conference (pictured above).
No word on when they are hitting stores or what stores, but the “DK” jeans feature their initials and come in an array of styles. For more information visit Dollhouse.com.

I thought that Pink HBCU thing was kind of wack too. But theres another part of it too. even though it appears as though its a racial thing, in reality it was more of a business decision. My best friend is a co-manager at Victorias Secret and from what she told me, Vickies sent out letters to 60 universities,( Howard included) earlier in the year so that they could approve being represented in Pink. Howard initially denied the letter. But once the group on Facebook started, they saw the demand for the product, so Howard decided to finally approve. I just wanted to put this out there b/c it seems like the article was written with a slight bias. I don’t think VS was in the wrong, I think that the schools took a minute to get back to them.

Welll….Being that I don’t wear PINK or go to a HBCU….that issue went WAYY over my head!! Who caressss….if it’s such a big deal to you people START your own lines, and stop putting money in the white man’s pocket!! They are only putting a couple of colleges out there for you guys, so they can shut you all up, so you can continue to buy their clothing!!….And, seriously…they are only thinking about their sales…majority of their consumers are Caucasians and so they have to target that demographic! I’m prettttyy sure that if they could produce an item with EVERY SINGLE college or university black or white, they will to make more money, but it’s just not realistic!!…Take it from someone who is going into Marketing!!….
But yea on another note…Dawn doesn’t look too nice!! In some pics she looks alright, and then in others she looks a mess!! But she does have a nice shape and a pretty voice!! That has to count for something!! LOL

Don’t we have enough jeans on the market. Sick and tired of these famous people wanting to throw their damn initials on some levis to make a profit. As far as dawn i think She would look a lot better if she lighened up on the makeup. i thought aubrey was known for wearing too much make-up but it looks like she passed her make-up kit to dawn. TOO MUCH MA SOMETIMES LESS IS BEST. none the less she is not butt ugly she just need a make over

wow we really needed the HBCU’s on jackets. Very educational. Maybe it will raise enrollment. Yea Right. I went to a HBCU and I’m sure there is some other way. to spend her time. VS is one of the companies that make little black girls feel like they have to be almost white to wear a decent pair of draws. We all need to grow up. So now we putting money in the pockets of folk that weren’t even thinking about us. We will never change.

So I should be happy that an HBCU solicited itself out to VS to ensure that Black females are running around in lounge wear/underwear on a campus for higher learning?

*yawn* @ VS….
I just can’t get into DK, they just don’t look good together as a group… and the music is just blah…. I like the fit of dollhouse jeans though and they are very comfortable for the weekend. I’m not going to run out and buy them but if I see something I like I might purchase….
and yes Dawn does need to go easy on the make-up… very easy…. it would soften her face a lot more if she looked more natural

good for VS, but why does it always take someone complaining about it before these companies make a “black-friendly” move? i wouldve used that oppt. to try to put out my own line of HBCU undies.

sooo, i def didn’t know about HBCU’s, but i’m glad they are adding them, becasue a lot of black girls/woman wear them. and even while working there, i just assumed they were only doing big 10 schools, until i realized that not all schools were included. but personally, now that we’ve addressed the race issue, how about we try our hands at the size issue?!?! the collegiate collection only goes to a large and they run extremely small(trust me I know). but i’m proud of my girl in danity kane, they’re just trying everything!!!!
