♫ HOT OR NOT: Janelle Monáe - “MR. PRESIDENT”

Tuesday, August 5, 2008

♫ Janelle Monáe - Mr. President

Drawing closer and closer to her release date of August 12th for her new LP, Janelle Monáe is releasing some of her more political songs out to get young voters riled up about this year’s election! “Mr. President” is a political burner, written and produced by Nate Wonder, Chuck Lightning and Monáe herself.

The song, with its blaring horns, has been said to be reminiscent of Lauryn Hill, however Janelle has a delivery all her own. “Mr. President” is one of the gems that will be featured on her August release, Metropolis, which hits stores and online everywhere next week, on the 12th. Make sure you pick up the EP and look out for her full album in January.

Definitely the RIGHT way to musically encourage people to vote and be aware of what’s going on in our society…

A resounding thumbs up!!!! Her and Jazmine Sullivan’s albums gonna be HOT.

Here is a singer who’s different, and is GOOD at that. Shame mainstream and black media only think black girls can only do generic R&B to sell. If she promotes in Europe and Japan, they would love her since they’re a lot more open to different sounds than America.

The track and delivery are lackluster but I love the content of the lyrics.

I love the lyrics and love her voice. She reminds me of an R&B version of Gwen Stefani. What is going on with her marketing team. Why I didn’t know her album was coming out this month? It’s sad how some of the bests artist like her and Chrisette Michele don’t get enough marketing. Why sign them if you don’t want to market them the right way.

I appreciate the lyrics but I’m not feeling the music. That’s why I didn’t vote because I can’t vote for something that doesn’t meet (or defeat) my standards. Also #15, how the hell does she sound like Gwen? They sound NOTHING alike…. Janelle’s voice is stronger (on that R&B tip).

Damn this song kicks ass . Love the message in this song, glad she stood up to write it, and feelin the Jimi Hendrix/Soul type instrumental.

I’m glad Janelle has provided a fresh sound for the masses!

#13 I totally agree. Who said unique had to be weird? Hell, look at Outkast they were totally different then what people thought was typical for hip hop sound or look and they earned respect like no other. Prince he’s outside the box but made some classics. Can we say Earth Wind and Fire their outfits were insane!! And we all know thats some real music. Even Patti Labelle and the Bluebells wore the craziest outfits and made hits. So never judge a book by it’s cover and plesase don’t keep black artist inside a sterotypical box of what r &b suppose to look like. Smooches and can’t wait for her album to drop!

Love Janelle! Saw her perform in Central Park this past Sunday and she is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Her voice, delivery, energy, and creativity inspires me. Not just entertains me, and that’s what I wish more artists were like. Everyone won’t understand or appreciate her talent, and that’s ok. Those that don’t get it, well it should be obvious she’s not making her music for you.

her voice, the music, the lyricas all beautiful, but the songs just okay…good road trip music.

I’m an old school head, so I have a very descriminating ear. I can’t help but to think of Al Green’s “Still In Love” when I heard the very beginning of this song. In other words, nothing about this or her is original in my opinion, other than that gimmicky, get-up of hers which still irks the living hell outta me.

This is my song of the day…slow churning and undersrtated. “Mr. President” are you listening? And this time its not Marilyn Monroe in between cocktails (literally).

The lyrics resonate with everything that is going on right now and the chorus/hook is instantly infectious. Furthermore, the delivery is fluid and stirring at moments. Janelle’s voice is extremely rich and has a soulful edginess I hadn’t noticed before. This is a song that will definitely help more people to discover and appreciate Janelle. I must say I am just becoming receptive to her, because honestly, I was enticed by some of the earlier leaks from this project.

Anytime and artist comes correct, I get excited and look to see and hear more.

I can not listen while at work. I saw her this past Sunday at Central Park, she was great! I wasn’t checking for her because I am jaded with today’s new artist. And she came off as being far out there. But your right @1, you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. I am looking forward to buying her album, and I haven’t felt this way in a LONG time. I lover her voice and her style.

@24 change, I feel the same too. Thanks to CL for putting me on to Janelle. Her Central Park performance really touched something in me. Something that I thought I lost. I’m a 80’s fan, not 80’s baby. So I was down with Fishbone, The Chives and Mantronix, all that. I love 80’s funk, and Janelle is bringing it back. Real talent!

I wish people would wise up!!! Clothing means nothing! The fact that a person wears, Gucci and Jimmy Choo, Dolce and Gabbana or Louis V.doesn’t make an individual more talented.
Janelle is a true artist. She is going to start a new movement. Hell, we should all be sick of the weaves, layer upon layer of make-up, too tight and short clothes and black “bad girl” clothes by now. Some people just have it…and Janelle is one who does. She doesn’t need to hide her beautiful voice behind a loud azz outfit. I’m so glad she is breaking the mold and being unique. She is wonderful and I appreciate her gift. If you would just listen to the music and stop worrying about her outfits you might actually enjoy it. Open you minds and ears the same way you open those eyes. I pre-ordered Metropolis and if you are smart you will too.

I like it, but it really reminds me of Pink’s “Dear Mr. President”… It’s faster and funkier, but still the same message and almost the same sound….
