♫ NEW RELEASE: Janelle Monáe - METROPOLIS, SUITE I

Monday, August 11, 2008

manymoons.jpg

Janelle Monáe releases her EP, Metropolis, Suite I: The Chase Tuesday, nationwide. Ever since hearing Janelle, first on Big Boi’s Purple Ribbon Allstars, I have been a fan. With her beautiful, classic voice and fresh, innovative sound, I am so please that she’s finally arrived with the release of this EP. The world will finally hear her.

♫ Janelle Monáe - Sincerely, Jane.

Last summer, Janelle independent released her first release with her label, The Wondaland Arts Society, and released her first single, “Violet Stars Happy Hunting!” which made a huge splash on the underground and indie scene. Little did she know, which was co-executive produced by Big Boi of OutKast, had caught the eyes and ears of music mogul, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. After lots of hard work and preparation, in a joint venture between her imprint, The Wondaland Arts Society and Bad Boy Entertainment, Janelle releases her first EP with distribution through Atlantic. It was made sure that everything was right.

♫ Janelle Monáe - Many Moons

Metropolis is a melting pot of rock, soul, funk, R&B and jazzy with funky, futuristic elements that follows the story of a young android named Cindi Mayweather. The conceptual album is Monáe’s take on the German silent film of the same title, 1927’s Metropolis, by Fritz Lang. Check out tracks like “Many Moons,” “Mr. President,” and “Sincerely, Jane.” Janelle’s got a little something on there for everyone. The music speaks for itself. Make sure you look out for the full-length album in January.

Make sure you pick up your copy of Janelle Monáe’s first suite, Metropolis tomorrow, and be on the look out for the full album in January!

This woman is INCREDIBLE!!!!! Period. I really dont know why people call her sound “weird”. How is strange? It has a has a concept behind it, she mixes different sounds without being contrived and is a great singer. I’d much rather hear someone singing about being “an alien from outta space” than hearing all the other usual crap. Nothing weird there to me. I know damn well a lot of Americans wont get excited by her music since it gravitates too far out from the norm on mainstream radio, MTV, BET, etc but they GOTTA promote her in the European and Japanese markets cause those folks would embrace her sound. She is one who is “different” so to speak, but is also VERY GOOD at doing so.

And if u listen to “Mr President” that is probably one of her most “conventional” tracks, showing that isnt completely relying on this intergalactic persona. The lyrics of Pres are great and have a meaningful message.

Dunno what else to add. This girl is something special. Her, Estelle and Jazmine Sullivan are definitely among the best female newcomers on the scene this year. SOOOOOOOOOOO glad real music is starting to slowly come back.

Question:
What is a talent like that doing on bad boy records? That was not a bold business move. We all know how diddy goes. All the great acts he had left: 112, faith evans, carl thomas. Mtv help make danity kane and mtv, the only that gets playing time, is cassie. We all know how she rolls; heads first.
I was excited finally the world get to see her talents, then I heard she was sign to bad boy, I almost had a wdf–moment!

To be honest, I haven’t heard one track by her that is (my) iPod worthy. I love her voice and vocal range BUT I think she can be promoted better. Maybe because I don’t just listen to R&B, my expectations of anything remotely “indie” are higher. Maybe that’s why she just hasn’t “wow”-ed me yet… i dunno. All I know is in terms of her style, I’ve heard it before and better. Hopefully I’ll hear something to convince me otherwise soon. Still, it’s nice that now ppl who don’t/can’t venture outside their norm will have another option their familiar w/ to listen to instead of that “urban pop” crap that’s mostly around. To thumbs up just for that!

hmmm…jury’s still out on this one. she just tries soooo hard to be different, and it comes off as ingenuine. i totally get the need for artistic expression, but the nature of music is to connect to the souls of your audience, and i just don’t get that from her. she would be better suited to just illustrate metropolis in a series of abstract paintings and hang them in an obscure art gallery somewhere… get all of it out of your system, then try connecting with the people who listen to you.

LUV JANELLE!! Have spoken too her a few times, and creatively she cannot be touched. Her Distribution deal is with BAD BOY. Creatively Puff lets her do her thing. That’s what makes her JANELLE, and that’s why DIDDY wanted her and signed her. Janelle is a breathe of fresh air Like Her Not -She’s DOPE!

I can understand where people are coming from and its not for everyone, her sound is different, and listening to it without visuals makes it even weirder to most people. She doesn’t “try hard” as some might say, it just appears that way, because most artists and their labels are the same recycled stuff. Look at some international artists :

Imogen Heap - “Hide and Seek” - if you want to know what different is - mind you this chick can sing, but watch her live performances on youtube, where she makes her music on stage - sh*t or Bjork for that matter - “All is full of love”)

I think your minds will change, as change is good sometimes, esp in this day and age of music with over-autotuned, musically challenged production. We’ve fallen in so much love with artists looks, and the beat, that we forgot what music is.

But watch her in concert and you will get it - that is where her strength is in my opinion. As far as a show, she puts that sh*t on something serious!

Kelsey Davis has the same sort of thing going on, where you have to be in the mood to listen to his stuff, but when you go to his show, you have one of the best nights of your life.

Ok…So, I pre-ordered Janelle Monae’s album through newburycomics.com. This album is soooo unique and hot! I am so impressed with this piece of art. I can’t believe people are so dense as to not appreciate such an incredible artist like Janelle simply because she looks and dresses different! I mean, it’s really absurd. She is wonderful and has an amazing voice. She is doing what a lot of artist of today can’t do, and that’s let her talent speak for itself rather than letting an image carry her. She has an incredible live voice (she is also a great performer) and can sing
a capella like nobody’s business. Please before judging her watch clips of her doing her thing on youtube. She will literally blow you away. GET THIS ALBUM!!! The message and her voice is so strong and powerful.

Please, the word “hating” has no bearing here, there were nothing but concise opinions so far - i don’t get it why people still say this :-|

I think JM is tight as f*ck. And the album will be bought. But I understand when people say its different. It is, you have to be in the mood to listen to some of it, in my opinion, but that does not mean it is not good music.

I like Pavoratti singing “Nessun Dorma” - but I can’t listen to opera all the time as I have to be in the mood (btw, symphony, yeah, thats real music - composed).

Talent aside, it isn’t for everybody (agreed), but I say, people who don’t like it as “ipod” worthy and the like, go to one of her shows, it is f*cking amazing, art at its best! The missing piece for the average consumer will be found in the sheer amount of entertainment her songs give when she performs them live - well worth it IMO

I like Sincerely, Jane, sounds very good.

Brian, please look at the way you construct your sentences in your reviews. Some of them do not make any sense. You really have to re-read over and over to understand what you are trying to say. This is just a little constructive critism.

Thanks for the music.

MOFO,

I feel where you’re coming from. I’ve seen Janelle peform live, and thats exactly how I felt when I left: Wow! What a performance! But it didn’t make me want to BUY the music. It felt as if I was leaving th Broadway performance of Wicked, that didn’t mean I wanted to run out and buy the soundtrack, but it was certainly enjoyable. Maybe she has differnent intentions in terms of what she wants to accomplish with her music. And, I LOVE Imogen Heap; I don’t have to be in the mood for her, her music is soothing, and the lyrics are deeply moving; ah ha, it *connects*…And maybe I’m just too critical, but even Janelle’s writing, as “abstract” as the album concept is, the writing is so juvenile, even Mr. President, everything seems to be sung for the sake of rhyming…I’m just not feeling her, but I don’t deny her talent. To each his own.

FYI - Just because someone doesn’t like an artist doesn’t make them wrong people. Quit trying to convince someone about YOUR BELIEFS!! SMDH people have the nerve to get on here and try to scream on people because they don’t feel Janelle. That’s crazy. Just know what YOU like. If your not her PR, why get all crazy?? I bet Diddy won’t give a quarter of that emotion about her.

I was the same way when CL first introduced Janelle, skeptical. And all I have to say is, if you catch her live, your opinion will change. I like her better live than on the CD. As far as her signing to Bad Boy, I don’t think she would be shelved like the rest. Janelle has started a very strong buzz. And it would be hard for her to go away. All Diddy’s other groups are made up in the studio. Monae’s “strange” music is whats going to put her in a different class than other BB artist that have went stale. If Diddy doesn’t do the right thing, I’m sure another label will scoop her up ASAP! She already knows Diddy’s style. She has the Dungon Family behind her too, so… Let’s just wish her the best.

I LOVE DIVERSITY….FINNALY SOMTHING NEW FROM A NEW ARTIST WITH A REAL singing voice….FINNALY MUSIC IS GETTIN ITS TALENT BACK.

I love Janelle Monae ever since Ive heard her first single.

Her voice is so lovely and pure…..it is sooooo refreshing when they release artist THEY ACTUALLY HAVE MORE TO OFFER TALENT WISE
THEN THERE LOOKS, STYLE OR SEX APPEAL.

Now its time to rep my girl DEEMI…….dont sleep on Deemi..she can blow too…..I hope she release some new stuff….we need to support the real talent, the positive and the gifted artist out here that truly has something sufficent and inspiring to offer the mic and there audience….
(like music use to when talent had to be more than what u looked like) like those whom are simply just doin it for money, fame and recoqnition…..ITS MORE TO MUSIC THEN THE SUPEFICIAL SH*T PPL&MEDIA. FOCUS ON NOWADAYS.

Her sound to me is a mix of Prince, Outkast, Macy Gray with a touch of Badu…..

Her look she pushed to the next level and is sticking to that one style but it is so Andre 2000. She took her hair and made it her own unique look add that to the weirdnessand mystery of Prince sprinkle the underlying messages in a few songs of Badu’s last album… and thus you have Janelle Monae… not a fan but I like her voice.

She has a great voice and loads of marketing appeal which is why Sean Combs the businessman snatched her up. Janelle has the ability to let her talent speak for itself so regardless of which label she signs with talent, and overall likability will carry her thru either here or outside of the States she definately will maintain a steady fan base…

I’m on the fence with her right now… I would have to check her out live

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 /

first let me start by saying.. Janelle is Incredible……………….. Her mind and Artistry isnt meant to be understood.. it just “is”…. there is a reason why she only had them press up “57,821″ Copies of her EP… Besides of it being in honor of “Cindy Mayweather” (The Cyborg robot who is the main character of the album) but basically..she’s not trying to sell to the millons… She’s being an ARTIST and enjoying every minute of it… she was blessed to have major backing..so that the world can be apart of this adventure… im sooo proud of her.. and she’s setting a standard that artist can be who they are… at all times.. without pressure of “Pleasing People” … She’s Painting Portraits with her music and vision.. for musicians and singers…. music is our Canvas… and so we use music just as a painter would use paints… Rather You like Janelle or not.. im sure its no bother to her regardless.. she is doing what she love’s and having a great time doing it.. i admire her for taking a stance against the pressure of the industry to be what they want her to be….. its time for art to be what it is… and not controlled by those who dont understand it…

Nothing but love for all Artist… BE YOU BABIES… they’ll catch up to us.. eventually *Wink*

Can I just say, from her first song about the aliens, she really came out of left feild with that one. That really turned me away. I like this song a lil, it’s different. But honestly, HONESTLY I stroll pass the posts about her and her music since I heard the first single (I think) the one about the aliens. This song should have been the first single. It has a nice vibe and good message. She’ll have to come a little harder for me to go cop the album. Don’t give up, these days it doesn’t take much to win me over musically.

It took me a minute to get used to her style, but I really enjoy it. When I hear her music, I feel like she’s actually putting effort into originality rather than just conforming to the norm of what people expect of her. I can appreciate that, because hearing the same lyrics and arrangements from artists can get really annoying. I’m not completely sold on buying the album yet though. I have to at least like half of an album before I purchase it.

She has really taken me by surprise! I had vaguely noticed her doing some promotional stuff to get her recognized, but didn’t think 2 much of her look as just gimmicky. But once I heard her voice, especially on Mr. President, she is VERY talented. Janelle has the type of voice that can do just about anything (i.e. Jill Scott) she wants it to do!

I wasn’t expecting to pay her 2 much attention, but I think I’m going 2 have 2 add EP 2 the house or at least download some tunes 2 mp3!
