NEWS: Gulf Coast Area Braces For Hurricane Gustav
Sunday, August 31, 2008

Karin Gordon feeds her nephew Brandon Gordon, 3 months, on an evacuation bus outside the New Orleans Amtrak Union Passenger Terminal on August 30, 2008 as voluntary evacuations of New Orleans Parish began ahead of a projected landfall of Hurricane Gustav in Louisiana later in the week.
As of Sunday morning, Gustav strengthened to a category three storm and is estimated to hit the US coast late September 1 or early September 2.

Nathan Washington, his son Nathan Washington, jr. and nephew David McGee board-up the window of his home before he and his family evacuate ahead of the arrival of hurricane Gustav August, 30, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana. City and state officials urged residents in the area to evacuate as early as possible to avoid traffic on the already busy highways leading away from New Orleans.

Lines of people wait for buses and trains to evacuate them from the city at the Union Passenger Terminal August 30, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurricane Gustav strengthened into a dangerous Category 4 storm as it headed towards the Gulf Coast.

U.S. Army National Guard soldiers keep watch as lines of people wait for buses and trains to evacuate them from the city at the Union Passenger Terminal August 30, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Hurricane Gustav strengthened into a dangerous Category 4 storm as it headed towards the Gulf Coast.

Ninth Ward resident Tim Humphrey walks past the latest weather report on Hurricane Gustav on his television while leaving his home during evacuation as Gustav approaches August 30, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana. City and state officials urged residents in the area to evacuate as early as possible to avoid traffic on the already busy highways leading away from New Orleans.

I say if you dont believe in and pray to god, this is the correct time to do so. I hear the govt is actually prepared this time around, hopefully things will go smoother than it did 3 years.
Im praying that the storm weakens. I cant stand to see another disaster like Katrina. But if my prayers dont get answered , I hope and pray for the lives and safety for the people of New Orleans,LA.

Wow…its been 3 yrs since Katrina and now this. The city still hasn’t really recovered from Katrina. I don’t think anyone expected another hurricane to come this soon. The majority of people have left the area. There are still those people who have made up in their minds that they’re staying. I have a friend who lives in the New Orleans area and I was checking up w/ them to make sure they were gone. People can’t take any more chances after Katrina. Get up and leave. Please, don’t stay there. We can only pray…

I am hoping the devastation is not as bad as 3 years ago. The last I heard it was a category 4 so by the time it hits the coast hopefully it will be downgraded a few notches. Maybe just some heavy rain. I think the main concern would be the winds and flooding.
Just keep these people in your prayers as they brace for this yet again.

Dang!!! I was just in Cheneyville, LA for my family reunion on July 4th. And I also visited New Orleans because thats where my family is from. It seems like everyone was finally picking up the pieces from Katrina….I pray that this is just a false alarm! They haven’t even fully recovered from three years ago. I was trippin looking at the levees and everything, and it feels weird just being there and now this happening again…i pray not!

i am from new orleans, but now living in georgia due to katrina. it is sad that this may happen again because not only is new orleans as a city not ready, but mentally, we have not healed from katrina’s pain. i’m glad to see that the evacuation is a little better.i know this is because bush doesn’t want this ish to happen again on his watch while he is still in office. i hope that our new orleanians don’t embarass themselves this time around by doing things uncalled for. the help is there so please leave!! i also think that during hurricane season gas prices should be cut down to a lower price for cities who have to evacuate where all they have to do is show their state i.d. because that is a lot of travel to get out of harm’s way not to mention that a lot of people don’t leave new orleans because they don’t have that kind of money and trying to stretch gas and money to stay at hotels isn’t a joke for people who don’t have family elsewhere. i think it would help for those who are always getting hit like florida, texas, alabama, and all of the other places. new orleans keep your head up and no matter what they say about us still and this time around , one thing is for sure WE ARE NOT REFUGEES!!! keep you all in prayer , i miss my home, but been through too much to turn back now sometimes you have to do that in life you know, but even though i am living in georgia now, i have not sworn myself in to be a georgia peach, i will and forever always be a n.o.l.a. chick. i pray for angels all around new orleans. peace

My lil sister goes to UNO, I understand she misses home but N.O. is not where it’s at anymore, and unfortunatly these hurricanes are letting others know, they have to start all over new, some where else. I hope these pple don’t move back…..IT is extremly sad and unfortunate, that this has to happen exactly 3 yrs later and a few days from the anniv. of when katrina came, I will pray and keep those in my thougths….

I glad to see the Government of Louisiana working fast to make sure that they don’t have a repeat of the Katrina. I was in the area for the 4th of July and it looked as if things were coming together for the area but I pray that the area doesn’t see the devastation or go through the trials of 2005. I don’t know if I could withstanding anything such as this. Psychologically this is trying for the people of New Orleans, the gulf region and the world if the hurricane is as bad as they say it is going to be. My prayers are with them all.

My prayers go out to everyone in the path of the storm. Please evacuate. I don’t want my people to go through a Katrina 2.0. They showed a report saying the levees are stronger than before,. Don’t trust that. The same thing was said before. I’m glad to see people leaving;just continue to do so. Many blessings.

People I have been on Cnn and MsMBC. If you know someone that is trying to wait the storm out. call them and tell them to leave. I have seen about three reports on the net and have heard that reporters have interviewed over 50 people who have decided to stay. Beaware that many states to include texas have set up shelters for the misplaced. that’s where the buses are going. Please do not risk the lives of our soldiers because you have a fond attachment to a house or city that may very well be distroyed weather you are there or not. Remenber it just as much of a risk for the rescue teams to come get you as it is for you to be stuck on a roof.

I can only imagine how small islands in the Caribbean handle this especially when there is no where to evacuate too and no money to rebuild. Weather in general seems to be getting more extreme

I pray nobody gets the foolish idea to ‘ride’ this out. Theres no excuse now..they are evacuating ppl and giving early warnings. If you stay at home you are on your own! you will not recieve any help whatsoever. AND those levees have gaps and shit? ride it out if u want 2…my crib is open to whomever needs shelter. im in Utah tho..but i have more than enuff space and food

Sometimes we have to have disaster to happen to learn, when you live down in the southern region of the US this is common, i am here in Miami and Gustav looks scary and now we here in Miami i looking at Hanna to see what she is going to do, we should know by next week, but this is how the summers are here in the South, this is the reason why they decided not to have the VMA’s here anymore, too many storms in the summer. We all have to Pray for each other, God Bless Nola
