I think like you said everyone is worried about how urban (BLACK) radio will take this but look at Rihanna for example. They didn’t starting playing her videos on BET until Umbrella and Take A Bow. Now a days it least for what I was told it is all about creating a mainstream audience meaning not just catering to urban but to white, chinese, puertan rican or whatever and Brandy from the look of her singles over the years on Billboard.com has done a mainstream crossover except for the underrated Afrodisiac era. So is R&B losing its appeal I agree with you take Keyshia Cole for example Heaven Sent was number one on the R&B charts for weeks and it didn’t crack pop 100 charts on Billboard.

I’m a big fan of Brandy as a recording artist and vocalist and while I don’t really love this song I have to say that her team have been a bit clever with choosing it as a lead off single because even though it’s not great music it does have that ‘music for everybody’ bland feel that mainstream audiences eat up. As it’s a business this is the type of move Brandy Inc. needed to make to stay revelant. Brandy put the effort in with both her last albums but down to terrible promotion by her labels both albums failed to hit their mark sales wise and because she wasn’t properly promoted the last time round her name definitely devalued in the process. No-one can really say Full Moon and Afrodesiac were failures creatively… if anything her last album was ahead of it’s time i.e. Coldplay meets RnB… you only have to look at the success of Justin Timberlake’s last effort and One Republic’s Apologize to know that. In any case, IMO before Brandy can come back and own the game again, she has to play the game by it’s more conventional rules a little bit. If it means making blatant commercial music for one album then so be it. An artist who is not as A list as they once were needs to prove that they can sell albums again before the label will back their creative deviances. Once she’s proved she’s a commercial seller again she can be experimental. Her and her team seem to know that this is her last chance and that another Afrodesiac-style album based on mood and vibe and not hit-songs would be a mistake. I feel this is why instead of concentrating solely on the music, the majority of this project’s effort has been in finding the right label with the capital to properly promote it because… if an album is released in the woods, good or bad does anyone really hear it?

It’s okay. I like Brandy but really never been a huge fan since back in the day day day. She has a nice singin voice but her songs nowadays don’t really do anything for me. I like songs across different genres so it’s not an issue about the type of song that’s she’s singing. No matter what u sing or how u switch it up you have to really put ur foot in it and it sounds like she just put her toes in it but not the whole foot. As nice as Brandy sound singing in her own lane (and slightly different lanes), I’ve heard better. I liked her last singles from previous albums a lot better.

But as a person, I like Brandy’s personality and would always wish her the best. She seems like a really kind and humble person and I grew up on her “I wanna be doooown” and the “The Boy is Mineeee” and her feature on Waiting to Exhale soundtrack is beautiful so she definitely deserves her success and respect in the industry.
