POLITICS: DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION UPDATE / OBAMA MAKES HISTORY / THE FUTURE FIRST LADY / JOE BIDEN’S SPEECH

View the video above for the latest info regarding the speeches and happenings at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) is giving his acceptance speech at the convention Thursday night.

BARACK OBAMA MAKES HISTORY

Sen. Barack Obama with Sen. Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, wave to the DNC on Wed.

On Wednesday, Sen. Barack Obama became the first African-American to lead a major party ticket.

As former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton motioned to cut the roll call vote short, delegates cried and cheered as she said, “Let’s declare together with one voice right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president.”

Obama will address an estimated 75,000 people in the culmination of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

In his address to the Convention, former President Bill Clinton reflected on the significance of this moment: “Now, Sen. Obama’s life is a 21st-century incarnation of the old-fashioned American dream. His achievements are proof of our continuing progress toward the more perfect union of our founders’ dreams. Barack Obama will lead us away from the division and fear of the last eight years back to unity and hope.”

THE FUTURE FIRST LADY

Following her big speech, Michelle Obama sat down with Brian Williams to discuss speech-writing, child-rearing, the Bidens and connecting with Cindy McCain.

Regarding Monday’s speech:

“I don’t like last minute, so we sort of got our speech together about a month ago, actually. Got to sort of live with it, so those were my words so it was very easy for me to internalize it. Amazingly, getting up in front of a crowd is probably the easiest part of it after 19 months of hanging out with Barack Obama with 75,000 people could be at a time. You get used to the energy of the crowd, and I tend to feed off of that. And I try to stay focused on why I’m there and that can fill my spirit with the kind of authenticity, I think. I just try to let people get a sense of the real me as much as possible. So I just try to let go and speak from the heart.”

It was truly a beautiful moment last night. Bill Clinton really redeemed himself, with that well presented speech. It came off has very convincing that he supports Sen. Obama.

II was equally and perhaps more impressed with John Kerry’s speech. Nice ‘attacks’, he should be congradulated for his efforts, it was nice & needed!

Sen. Biden did his thing as well, but his son’s introduction was very emtional and when I saw Michelle Obama crying, I shed a tear.

    Last night was great!

  3. KARIM

    OBAMA YES WE CAN!
    NO WAY
    NO HOW
    NO MCCAIN!
WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE,THEY CAN’T CHANGE THE FACT THAT HE HAS ALREADY MADE HISTORY
    NEXT STOP “WHITE HOUSE”

  4. God bless Obama and Biden. I pray they make it to the White House. I urge all of you to get out and vote. As much mess as I have to go thru over here in Baghdad, Iraq to get an absentee ballot to vote, alot of you have no excuse not to jump in your car or someone else’s car or bus or train or even walk to get to a ballot to place that vote!!! If McCain a.k.a. Bush III gets voted into office and shit gets worse, you have NO ONE to blame but yourself if you didn’t vote!!!!!

  5. Big M

I have officially lost respect for Brian Williams. In the interview with Michelle, he had the nerve to ask her where she learned the “communication skills to get up before a national audience” – she is an educated woman you dumb ass! When will white people ever not be surprised at our ability to read and write…yes, I played the race card (so what).

  6. KIA

Exactly #5! Don’t complain if you choose not to vote. I truly hope all goes well for Obama.

—- WHOEVER SAID IT WAS RIGHT.. WHETHER OBAMA WINS OR NOT NO ONE-
—–CAN CHANGE THE FACT THAT HE HAS ALREADY MADE HISTORY! THERE
—–FOR IN MY EYES HE WINS EITHER WAY…

    —– OBAMA 08!

  8. Omon Imo

This woman is just too smart. I definitely hope the Obama/Biden Campaign wins this election.

  9. DATDCDOPEBOI

    LMAO AT # 6 I agree
Like WTF….she cant know how to deliver a nice speech, that was worked on by her and written in her own words to say what she wanted it to say. And She said she couldnt even see the words from the teleprompter because of all the signs, ANYONE WHO WATCHED THE DNC EACH NITE KNOWS that them damn sign were up ALL THE DAMN TIME lol. So….she did the damn thing from memory and it was hott…i dig

    OBAMA/BIDEN 08!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so I am not a water baby, but last night was the third night in a row where I stayed home, watched the Democratic National Convention and cried my eyes out. It was great to see Sen. Edward Kennedy and Michelle Obama speak the first night. I felt the energy right through the T.V. Then Hillary Clinton was very gracious and I thought she spoke sincerely in encouraging those who voted for her to vote for Obama.

Last night did it for me. Did ya’ll see Michelle Obama crying? I just broke down after that. Sen. Biden’s son Beau Biden had me gone when he was talking about his Father taking the train home every night from Washington, D.C. I loved it all. Great Job Dems! Let’s vote Obama/Biden come November!!!!

  11. Mel B

I’m undecided but after watching last night, I’m starting to catch the fever. I really have much respect for everyone involved. Hillary Clinton did the damn thing! so did Bill & Joe Biden rocked the house. His son gave a very emotional speech. I found out the even though he’s already Attorney General of Deleware, he’s also in the national guard & heading to Iraq in November. Michelle Obama wasn’t even giving the side eye tonight. Since everyone has been pitch hitting for Obama, I really want to see him deliver the heat tonight. I’m not dazzled by politicians giving big speeches, show me that you understand the paycheck to paycheck families are care about the middle and lower class. I’m from Illinois & all Obama has ever talked about was Chicago. Illinois has more cities than Chicago and I wished as a Senator, he went to other cities & got to know everyone he represents. Shout out of Champagne, East St. Louis, and all Illinois. Doesn’t matter if your Democrat/ Republican….both parties have to target the undecided, they are the wild cards in this election.

  12. dukesman2000

That was a big speech by Bill. I love how he forcefully and in unequivocal fashion told the whole world that Obama is ready to be President of the United States.

I just read an article which stated that 66% of black people believe that their kid can become president of the United States. That is what I have been trying to tell black people, mostly the ones, who say that they are not voting for Barack, that this moment is bigger than you, it is bigger than me and it is bigger than Barack. It is just the significance behind the moment. Even four years ago if I asked my son what he wants to be when he grows up and he said president. Though I wouldn’t tell him this but in my heart I would say, “son you really need to pick something else” But now it is a different story. I can tell him that he can really be president of this country. You just have to sit back and take it all in and say “WOW, it has really happened” A Black man is about to become the President of America, one of the most, brutally racist country’s in the world. It wasn’t long ago, if you drove down south, you might see someone who looks like Barack hanging from a tree. If you are not caught up in this moment you are need to check yourself for a pulse.

    Obama ‘08

  13. UM...I GUESS

    awesome.

i’m so proud of barack and his accomplishments and look forward to what will be in the future.

as for biden’s speech, i was a bit disappointed. nonetheless, i think he was the best overall pick for vp.

michelle is just amazing. it would be an honor for any american to call her our first lady. she displayed so much poise, grace and articulation in her speech; it was absolutely phenomenal. what a wonderful role model she is.

anyone between 18-24 reading this…PLEASE register (if you haven’t already) and vote in november. we are a MAJOR ASSET in this election and can’t allow or afford to have the republicans reclaim the white house!!

    *OBAMA 08*

  14. Independent Woman (I don't care if ya get mad)

I have to agree Michelle is a great example of poise, grace and intelligence for African American women and women across the board. I give Hilary credit for coming as far as she did with all the adversity she faced that she would not have come across if she were a man.

I’m glad she did what was best for the party in the end and released those delegates and put on her brown nose face…. I have to also extend credit to Bill who said clearly what Hil didn’t that Barack was the best man for the job and he stated why and he reinforced Baracks characteristics. I think Hil spoke about herself more then she did Barack but that is all behind us now these are the count down days..I hope all voters get out and BARACK THE VOTE!!!

  15. fiffj1234

@#6, I agree! I think he did it to try to provoke a negative defensive response from her, remember he is a white man and regardless of how many black friends he has, deep down they are raised with those stereotypes. Out of the heart, the mouth speaks! I would have said something like, communication skills? I ve been communicating since I began talking as a toddler and in life in general as a would a journalist or something to that effect to make him feel ridiculous for saying that and also to subtlely say I got how you tried to play me kind of vibe, with a smiley face of course. They want to see her angry (hint, angry black woman). She should also talk less during her interviews, too wordy and that could get you in trouble. But she probably did the best thing and sort of ignored him to a degree. Second hand, what show is Brian Williams on, I think I need to send an email about that question being racially offensive as if blacks are in caves, he didn’t ask anyone else that crap!

  16. fiffj1234

Also, he was still trying to pull the anger out of her with the question about what attacks on Obama has made her most angry. He think he slick. Brian, we know what youre up to on the CL. But, that just shows how much class Michelle has, she definitely picked up on it as much as we did but she was too sharp to be that puppet! Go girl!

you know as i listen to the morning talk radio i hear a lot of black folks talking about how proud they are and how we as a people have come a long way. some have even put him in the white house already listening to them talk. i want to tell all you black folks “HOLD YOUR WATER.” YES ITS HISTORY and a great stride but black folks you need to take that joy and glee and look inwards. the state of black america is in turmoil. its each one for themselves now evveryone wants to bask in the glory of a blackman that is maybe on his way to 1600 penn. we must then be able to let him go. black folks we must find our way out of this dessert, because you have the minority republican whip in congress named BOEHENER thats just waiting for a barack presidency and if its any prelude to whats in store this person is going to undermine barack and his term in office if he is elected w/ him bragging about the gridlock and the shutting down of the gov’t if it comes down to it. now where is barack going to find time for us. w/ a congress loaded w/ red state republicans that serve only people that walk, talk and look like them. the have and the have mores. then last; but not least you have the ‘CAIN’S’ and i ain’t talk’n bout no damn john mccain either. i’am speaking about the cain—— my cacuasian brother who is jealous and hates me for what reason i struggle to understand. i must be a descendant of ABEL his [dna] must be in my black blood . CAIN– [my brother who hates me] and DESPISES ME AND SEEKS TO DESTORY ME. BECAUSE HE IS JEALOUS OF ME AND FOR WHAT? . look how them republicans are mocking biblical history by calling barack the one. if that is not an cain i don’t know what you would call it . because there is only one GOD and he/she has not even been seen as of yet. SO WHILE WE BLACK FOLKS ARE JUMP’N FOR JOY DON’T YOU THINK FOR ONE MIN. THAT THE CAINS OF THIS WORLD ARE PLOTTING. you notice the disconnect bwt the races not all of my white bro and sis but the cains of that group the red like the states where they reside. so like bill clinton said [ yes can can] the crowd roared and bill said BUT LETS GET HIM ELECTED FIRST. now does that ring a bell black folks. WHERE IS TAVIS SMILEY when you need him.

  18. Camille

Unfortunately, I have every intention of watching the speeches, but for the past three nights I have started to watch it and at some point I doze off and miss some of it. I’ve been tired as hell. For those “looking at the bright side” who say that if Obama loses that he’s already made history, yes you have a point, but I have a question….CAN WE REALLY AFFORD TO LOSE THIS ELECTION? I must say that as we get closer to November…the thought really does scare me. OBAMA 08

  19. kmniles

Now that Barack’s cards are laid on the table, I’m still trying to figure out who McCain is gonna choose for his running mate. I’m also praying someone opens up a can of whoop ass on Joe Lieberman. Wouldn’t that be funny?

  20. Poetic Blue

—- #18 in short.. what are you saying exactly? I read the whole thing and still did not grasp it… mainly the cain part..

  21. OK, #18, I am completely lost on what your point is. To be honest with you, you’re perpetuating the same negativity that you talk about in your comment. Why are you downplaying the accomplishment of Obama? Of course he hasn’t made it into the white house yet, but that’s no reason to tell anyone else they can’t celebrate the fact that he’s made it this far! Everything negative you’ve listed in your comment are “if’s” and “what if”s”. IF Barack gets elected we have to worry about the “cains”. IF Barack gets elected we have to worry about Boehener. IF Barack gets elected we have to worry about the “red state republicans”. Stop with the hypotheticals and focus on the REAL. The REAL is Barack Obama is the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE FOR A MAJOR POLITICAL PARTY!!! The REAL is Barack Obama is the CLOSEST we’ve EVER been thus far to having a black man in the white house. The problem right now isn’t all these “cains” and “red state republicans” and Barack being undermined once in office. The problem as I see it u putting a negative spin on a VERY POSITIVE milestone in American history!!! Whether he gets elected or not, celebrate how far we’ve come, brothers and sisters!!!

  22. I agree w/you Darkflava!!

    21

The story of Abel and Cain from the Bible. “Am I my brothers keeper…”. Surely you’ve heard of that before.

But you right…still wasn’t making to much sense, lol

  24. bebe

#18, what the hell are you talking about???
Anyway I’m happy that Barack has paved the way for minorities in the white house, its a big accomplishment. Am I gonna vote for him??? Heck no, McCain has my vote. I refuse to vote for a man who will more than likely legalize partial birth abortions. McCain on the other hand is a Christian and has a strong stand against it. Electing a president is more than skin color…. What’s the religion of the person your nominating??? How do they feel about issues that concern you??? More importantly, your school funding from the government… Where does your nominee stand??? It annoys the hell out of me, because people are voting skin color and not important issues. McCain 08!
