POLITICS: MICHELLE OBAMA’S DNC SPEECH

In case you missed it, check out Michelle Obama as the first headline act of the Democratic National Convention.

In a soul-stirring speech in honor of her father’s memory and her daughters’ future, Mrs. Obama said her husband, Sen. Barack Obama, will make an “extraordinary president” and added that “[her children's future] and all our children’s future is [her] stake in this election”.

She also mentioned that she and her husband were raised with the same values like “you work hard for what you want in life, that you word is your bond, that you do what you say you’re gonna do, that you treat people with dignity and respect even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Malia and Sasha joined their mother onstage following her speech as “Isn’t She Lovely” played to a roaring crowd. Sen. Obama made an appearance via satellite and asked, “How about Michelle Obama? Now you know why I asked her out so many times even though she said no. You want a persistent president.”

Sen. Obama will make history on Thursday when he accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination in front of an expected 75,000 on the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech“.

    She’s so Politician’s Wife Fly!

  2. Dame(The real singers are back)

I watched it last night awesome speeech. CNN was making me mad by saying the DNC started off too soft because no one attacked McCain and when Michelle came out she did it in her own way. I was moved by her speech and was cute to see their children at the end saying they loved their dad.

  3. Greg_Arious

This was such a great speech last night. I know so many women who were brought to tears by this and Ted Kennedy’s speech.

Who watched it on CNN? Was anyone else pissed at how rude James Cargill(is that his name?) was being. Talking about how the day was wasted and that they needed to focus more on Bush/McCain bashing. That blew my mind. There is plenty of time for that you a-hole the convention lasts FOUR DAYS! The American public needed to see the more human side of the Obama’s since the Republicans are trying to paint them as elitists and alien to American values. He’s just bitter that this isnt Hilary’s convention and I say to him and all the other bitter Hilary supporters GET THE FUCK OVER IT!

  4. Kymlayla

I watch the convention last night and I was one of the many who had tears in my eyes. I felt such a great sense of pride that a black man is just a few months away from making history. He has a strong, very well educated woman on his side. When reading about Michelle especially in the beginning alot of people were and still is sleeping on her. She is his secret weapon and you can believe she will have some late night with Barrack and him “picking” her brain.

I wish them much success and I can truly say these past 19mth have made me truly proud to be an AMERICAN!!

  5. Greg_Arious

And to all the “democratic” women out there who are ready to vote for McCain because Hilary isnt the nominee what will you do when McCain attempts to repeal your rights as women? Abortion rights, equal pay legislation so on and so forth.

  6. It was a GREAT speech. I love watching their family. They’re actually a genuine family, not a family that’s been prepped and prodded for cameras and interviews. I like how his youngest daughter kept trying to talk to him when he was on the screen talking. I pray he gets elected.

  7. kaykay

I only saw the hilights on msn but I’m sure she was the bomb. I’m honestly worried about these clinton for mccain women-they just say to hell with obama’s/democratic policies and stances and are gonna vote for mccain to spite obama & ruin the country. the clintons can’t spell the name graceful either-they make white people look bad imo. and why do they keep calling clinton supporters disanfranchised? doesn’t that mean when your vote isn’t counted or you’re denied the right to vote? they voted and they lost. end of story.

  8. Queen

EVERYONE, Watch it on TV-ONE!! Support Black media!! I watched this speech last night and I was literally in tears. It was interesting how many women (ie: White women) were in tears! The whole thing surrounding Michelle was touching, from her speech, to the “Michelle” signs, to the “isn’t she lovely” song by Stevie Wonder… I was appalled…This did good for my soul!

  9. Tasha

Michelle did an excellent job with her speech I know I wasn’t the only one was moved to tears. I never get emotional over anything political but her speech truly moved me. I hope everyone who registered to vote will go out and vote and those who are not please get registered this is so important.

  10. Queen

I don’t understand how some of these Hillary supporters are going to McCain’s side. Don’t they know that McCain had voted against a bill that would guarantee equal pay for women? WTF!!?!?!?

  11. UpGRadeWHO?

    THE FIRST LADY HAS SPOKEN!!!!

  12. bklyn-bella

seeing Michelle speak last night was such an inspiration for me as a black woman and I’m sure to everyone as well. I believe it is high time we have a black female role model and Michelle fits the mold very well. I am so grateful to experience a time such as this and even if Barck does not win(which i see as impossible) I am still proud at how she represented herself as an educated well spoken individual with a good head on her shoulders; and for that one moment that the black family was held in a positive light for the world to see.

  13. Big M

Love her, love her. I was already near tears during her speech, but when Barack came up on the screen, his girls’ excitement got the best of me. It looked as though Malia wanted to go through the screen. And how polite they were in saying hello to the other family who’s house he was at. I wish all of our young women could be raised with such grace and respect. I know its possible.

Am I the only that thinks the only reason the media keeps pulling Hilary Clinton out of their ass is because she’s a white woman? I mean really, if she were Asian or Hispanic they would have been stopped talking about her. Get over it haters, she lost fair and square.

  15. Shellboogie

Michelle is the epitome of class and style and an excellent role model. She has shown the world in her speech what it is to be a strong and beautiful black woman. I commend her for a great speech and watched as she delivered each paragraph fighting back the tears of joy and the audicity of hope.

People our time has come, everything great happens because of timing. We need to go out and make Barak Obama the President of the United States.

  16. Ms.314

Love the Speech.!!! She was wonderful. Her brother didn’t do bad either…

  17. Karen

I L-O-V-E-D Michelle’s speech. She was flawless. She was expressive, emotional, and very passionate. The Democratic party executed the “humanization” of Michelle very well (although I’ve always thought she was great).

  18. MissCeCe

    That was touching….. Go Michelle!!!!

  19. pat

SPEECH WAS PHENOMENAL………..i believe her and in THEM
    the girls were too CUTE

  20. Nik

My mother and I watched this last night and I couldn’t hold back the tears. Michelle did an amazing job with shedding the light on who she really is. The media has had a field day with bashing her, and in her own way, she fought back last night.

If people were not moved by her speech, then something is wrong with them. Last night, I had a new sense of pride in the Black community. Watching the Obamas making history has been a catalyst for me to continue to live out my dreams, no matter what people say.

America needs a change, and not a change based on fear; but a change based on HOPE!!

    Go Obama!!!!

  21. cliff

after watching that speech. i think she gives a better speech than mr speech (obama) himself.

  22. MAI03

Michelle’s speech was amazing. it was so much honesty & passion in her speech. She looked so fierce and her daughters are too cute.

  23. H-Town Chic***

Michelle speech was real, emotional, and passionate.Plus she wrote the speech herself!!! I just love her. PLEASE PEOPLE GO REGISTER TO VOTE. LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD!!! IF ANYONE WHO HAD DOUBTS ABOUT THE OBAMA FAMILY CHARACTER. AFTER LAST NIGHT YOU SHOULD HAVE A SLIGHT CHANGE OF HEART.

  24. Shaina

I missed her speech last night, so thanks for posting it, CL! I was so moved by Michelle’s words. Future First Lady, Michelle is a beautiful, accomplished, intelligent and inspiring woman! It’s so refreshing to see a powerful, positive woman of color dedicating her life to public service. Unfortunatley, I didn’t come from a tight-knit family like the Obamas, so it’s great to see an example of a what a family should be — positive, supportive, caring. I aspire to be like them when I finally settle down to start a family.

Michelle is a role model to woman not only in the U.S., but across the world. She makes me proud to be a woman of color, she makes me to proud to be an American!

    Obama & Biden ’08!

  25. JAZZY

I ACTUALLY CRIED DURING HER SPEECH!!!!!
GO AHEAD MICHELLE OBAMA!!!!! YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND BETTER DO THE DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I AM SOOO IN LOVE WITH THEM!!!

    BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!
    BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!
    BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!
    BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT 2008!!!

  26. WillPwr

I am happy there was no Obama vs. McCain bashing.

F*ck that we need to stay focused on the issues at hand.

Applause for Michelle and the girls!!

FYI: Did anyone peep that there were more white people in the audience than any other race?

  27. cliff

to all the people wondering about the clinton women who say they will vote mccain, here is my theory on that:

i think clinton is not doing enough to deter that. denouncing a mccain ad and saying vote obama is not enough. she needs to be just has relentless in advocating obama as she was trying to paint him as the inexperienced foreigner. her stagnant stumps for obama are just as damaging to him as her “3 am phone call” attack. if she REALLY loves the democratic party she needs to get off her high horse and help get our nominee elected and stop focusing on her personal feelings. she needs to condemn these “clinton dems” who say they will vote spitefully for a man who has nothing in common with our party just to vengefully oust obama. that is the main reason why the dems will always fail. we cut off our noses to spite our face. we must not let us these bitter voters cost us 4 more years of failed polices.

the second part is the media focusing on clinton and clintonites. we have known senator clinton will not be our parties nominee for some time now. why is the media still focused on her? this is the biggest non-issue issue i’ve ever heard off. she gets way too much attention. yes she accomplished a lot. yes she is a pioneer. yes she is a strong woman that will be a role model to all women. however, she’s not running for president anymore. what is this crap about having “her moment”? first, when obama clinched the nomination, she digressed acknowledging his win because she wanted to have her moment. now she has to have her moment in the convention. this is crap. SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!

  28. Poetic Blue

These has been Hiliary supporters need to get over it.. saying they will vote for McCain instead of Obama because Hiliary wasn’t the nominee.. and where is the logic in that?? Hiliary and Obama have the SAME policies…

  29. She was GREAT! She did a really good job.

I love the part when Barack was there via satallite & the interaction with his daughters. They are going to make a GREAT first family.

  30. stopping by

She is just too beautiful!!! I mean her body is tighttttttttttttt… she is 44 years old!!!
I always thought she was pretty !!! and also she has a beautiful family!!!
I know as a family they workout a lot , which is pretty healthy to me.
What great role models they are for us AA or for anybody for that matter…
She was just phenomenal last night and she looked hot !!! My Mom was tearing throughout her speech and so was I… and believe it or not even my father had some tears , and I never saw him like that LMAO

  31. Vee1

I enjoyed her speech last night, and the fact that they are just attacking, but trying to assimilate themselves with the rest of America in the aspect that we are raising children too just like you, and we want the same things for our families as you do too. She looked great and those girls are just adorable especially the youngest one.

  32. Vee1

I meant to say that they AREN”t just attacking.

  33. dukesman2000

That was a helluva speech she gave last night. Even her brother, though nervous, did an ok job. I like the little video on her life story. Make me wonder, how funny the media is. They can distort people’s mind and make such a phenomenal, exemplary classy women look bitter and unpatriotic, but on the other hand, exalt a drug addict (yes, I said it. Cindy McCain is a junkie) look like the All American gal.

I wonder how Cindy McCain’s story is gonna play out. The priviledge white American kid, who was born in to riches stole drugs from her own charity organization to feed her own addiction. Such a lovely All- American story, makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over…lol.

  34. lekool

Not only was this an incredible speech, this is a POWERFUL moment in time.

    thnx 4 the post.

    lekule.

  35. Independent Woman (I don't care if ya get mad)

Michelle was awesome!! She was eloquent, emotional and really brought a positive light to family morals, values and beliefs. Her intelligence and education spoke voulmes.

I loved that she highlighted that she and Barack both came from hard-working families and can relate to the working-class or working poor. I think she spoke for all families, not just the black family and that was important to reach voters of all races and ethnic backgrounds.

It was great to see, and I think people that never cared about voting or elections or conventions are now on board and interested in what both candidates have to say! This is conversation for all it’s the best in quite a long time at least in my lifetime and I hope that this pushes our people to become more involved in the grassroots of change wherever you can make a difference please don’t talk about it be about it!!! Long after this is over work will need to be done!!! We must keep and stay in our house!!!

  36. stacy

wow michelle obama is so stylish. she has nice high cheek bones. very intelligent woman. i hope obama wins

  37. newyorkcitygirl

Michelle Obama is officially the hottest chick in the game. She came from poverty, living in the south side of Chicago to graduating from two prestigious colleges and possibly becoming the very the first African American first lady in the White House. She is educated, classy and beautiful. The Obamas are POWERFUL.

  38. 61

I’M SO INSPIRED BY WHAT’S TAKING PLACE THIS ELECTION YEAR THAT I BEGAN TO SHED TEARS LAST EVENING. TED’S PRESENCE ALONE EVOKED EMOTION AND A GREAT SENSE OF HOPE WITHIN ME LAST NIGHT. HERE IS A MAN WHO HAS A HISTORY OF ADVERSITIES AND DEATH WITHIN HIS IMMEDIATE FAMILY, AND EVEN POST BRAIN CANCER SURGERY HE FOUND STRENGTH TO APPEAR AT THE DNC FOR A CANDIDATE HE FIRMLY BELIEVES IN AND REPRESENTS WHAT HIS LATE BROTHER REPRESENTED FOUR DECADES AGO!

  56. Toons

That was an amazing speech. She silenced the critics, still some managed to turn such a positive evening into a negative one.

To my surprise BET aired the DNC last night (too little too late). I refuse to give them any ratings, I flippped between TVOne, and CNN for the commentary.

  57. Toons

Wow my comment is being moderated. Why am I not surprised, actually I am surprised. I could understand if it was a Kanye, Solange or even Rihanna post (celebrity friends) But it’s a freakin DNC post. Come-freakin-on CL!
