POLITICS: MICHELLE OBAMA’S DNC SPEECH

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

In case you missed it, check out Michelle Obama as the first headline act of the Democratic National Convention.

In a soul-stirring speech in honor of her father’s memory and her daughters’ future, Mrs. Obama said her husband, Sen. Barack Obama, will make an “extraordinary president” and added that “[her children's future] and all our children’s future is [her] stake in this election”.

She also mentioned that she and her husband were raised with the same values like “you work hard for what you want in life, that you word is your bond, that you do what you say you’re gonna do, that you treat people with dignity and respect even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.”

Malia and Sasha joined their mother onstage following her speech as “Isn’t She Lovely” played to a roaring crowd. Sen. Obama made an appearance via satellite and asked, “How about Michelle Obama? Now you know why I asked her out so many times even though she said no. You want a persistent president.”

Sen. Obama will make history on Thursday when he accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination in front of an expected 75,000 on the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech“.

I watched it last night awesome speeech. CNN was making me mad by saying the DNC started off too soft because no one attacked McCain and when Michelle came out she did it in her own way. I was moved by her speech and was cute to see their children at the end saying they loved their dad.

This was such a great speech last night. I know so many women who were brought to tears by this and Ted Kennedy’s speech.

Who watched it on CNN? Was anyone else pissed at how rude James Cargill(is that his name?) was being. Talking about how the day was wasted and that they needed to focus more on Bush/McCain bashing. That blew my mind. There is plenty of time for that you a-hole the convention lasts FOUR DAYS! The American public needed to see the more human side of the Obama’s since the Republicans are trying to paint them as elitists and alien to American values. He’s just bitter that this isnt Hilary’s convention and I say to him and all the other bitter Hilary supporters GET THE FUCK OVER IT!

I watch the convention last night and I was one of the many who had tears in my eyes. I felt such a great sense of pride that a black man is just a few months away from making history. He has a strong, very well educated woman on his side. When reading about Michelle especially in the beginning alot of people were and still is sleeping on her. She is his secret weapon and you can believe she will have some late night with Barrack and him “picking” her brain.

I wish them much success and I can truly say these past 19mth have made me truly proud to be an AMERICAN!!

And to all the “democratic” women out there who are ready to vote for McCain because Hilary isnt the nominee what will you do when McCain attempts to repeal your rights as women? Abortion rights, equal pay legislation so on and so forth.

It was a GREAT speech. I love watching their family. They’re actually a genuine family, not a family that’s been prepped and prodded for cameras and interviews. I like how his youngest daughter kept trying to talk to him when he was on the screen talking. I pray he gets elected.

I only saw the hilights on msn but I’m sure she was the bomb. I’m honestly worried about these clinton for mccain women-they just say to hell with obama’s/democratic policies and stances and are gonna vote for mccain to spite obama & ruin the country. the clintons can’t spell the name graceful either-they make white people look bad imo. and why do they keep calling clinton supporters disanfranchised? doesn’t that mean when your vote isn’t counted or you’re denied the right to vote? they voted and they lost. end of story.

EVERYONE, Watch it on TV-ONE!! Support Black media!! I watched this speech last night and I was literally in tears. It was interesting how many women (ie: White women) were in tears! The whole thing surrounding Michelle was touching, from her speech, to the “Michelle” signs, to the “isn’t she lovely” song by Stevie Wonder… I was appalled…This did good for my soul!

seeing Michelle speak last night was such an inspiration for me as a black woman and I’m sure to everyone as well. I believe it is high time we have a black female role model and Michelle fits the mold very well. I am so grateful to experience a time such as this and even if Barck does not win(which i see as impossible) I am still proud at how she represented herself as an educated well spoken individual with a good head on her shoulders; and for that one moment that the black family was held in a positive light for the world to see.

Love her, love her. I was already near tears during her speech, but when Barack came up on the screen, his girls’ excitement got the best of me. It looked as though Malia wanted to go through the screen. And how polite they were in saying hello to the other family who’s house he was at. I wish all of our young women could be raised with such grace and respect. I know its possible.

Am I the only that thinks the only reason the media keeps pulling Hilary Clinton out of their ass is because she’s a white woman? I mean really, if she were Asian or Hispanic they would have been stopped talking about her. Get over it haters, she lost fair and square.

Michelle is the epitome of class and style and an excellent role model. She has shown the world in her speech what it is to be a strong and beautiful black woman. I commend her for a great speech and watched as she delivered each paragraph fighting back the tears of joy and the audicity of hope.

People our time has come, everything great happens because of timing. We need to go out and make Barak Obama the President of the United States.

My mother and I watched this last night and I couldn’t hold back the tears. Michelle did an amazing job with shedding the light on who she really is. The media has had a field day with bashing her, and in her own way, she fought back last night.

If people were not moved by her speech, then something is wrong with them. Last night, I had a new sense of pride in the Black community. Watching the Obamas making history has been a catalyst for me to continue to live out my dreams, no matter what people say.

America needs a change, and not a change based on fear; but a change based on HOPE!!

Go Obama!!!!

I missed her speech last night, so thanks for posting it, CL! I was so moved by Michelle’s words. Future First Lady, Michelle is a beautiful, accomplished, intelligent and inspiring woman! It’s so refreshing to see a powerful, positive woman of color dedicating her life to public service. Unfortunatley, I didn’t come from a tight-knit family like the Obamas, so it’s great to see an example of a what a family should be — positive, supportive, caring. I aspire to be like them when I finally settle down to start a family.

Michelle is a role model to woman not only in the U.S., but across the world. She makes me proud to be a woman of color, she makes me to proud to be an American!

to all the people wondering about the clinton women who say they will vote mccain, here is my theory on that:

i think clinton is not doing enough to deter that. denouncing a mccain ad and saying vote obama is not enough. she needs to be just has relentless in advocating obama as she was trying to paint him as the inexperienced foreigner. her stagnant stumps for obama are just as damaging to him as her “3 am phone call” attack. if she REALLY loves the democratic party she needs to get off her high horse and help get our nominee elected and stop focusing on her personal feelings. she needs to condemn these “clinton dems” who say they will vote spitefully for a man who has nothing in common with our party just to vengefully oust obama. that is the main reason why the dems will always fail. we cut off our noses to spite our face. we must not let us these bitter voters cost us 4 more years of failed polices.

the second part is the media focusing on clinton and clintonites. we have known senator clinton will not be our parties nominee for some time now. why is the media still focused on her? this is the biggest non-issue issue i’ve ever heard off. she gets way too much attention. yes she accomplished a lot. yes she is a pioneer. yes she is a strong woman that will be a role model to all women. however, she’s not running for president anymore. what is this crap about having “her moment”? first, when obama clinched the nomination, she digressed acknowledging his win because she wanted to have her moment. now she has to have her moment in the convention. this is crap. SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!

I enjoyed her speech last night, and the fact that they are just attacking, but trying to assimilate themselves with the rest of America in the aspect that we are raising children too just like you, and we want the same things for our families as you do too. She looked great and those girls are just adorable especially the youngest one.

That was a helluva speech she gave last night. Even her brother, though nervous, did an ok job. I like the little video on her life story. Make me wonder, how funny the media is. They can distort people’s mind and make such a phenomenal, exemplary classy women look bitter and unpatriotic, but on the other hand, exalt a drug addict (yes, I said it. Cindy McCain is a junkie) look like the All American gal.

I wonder how Cindy McCain’s story is gonna play out. The priviledge white American kid, who was born in to riches stole drugs from her own charity organization to feed her own addiction. Such a lovely All- American story, makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over…lol.

Michelle was awesome!! She was eloquent, emotional and really brought a positive light to family morals, values and beliefs. Her intelligence and education spoke voulmes.

I loved that she highlighted that she and Barack both came from hard-working families and can relate to the working-class or working poor. I think she spoke for all families, not just the black family and that was important to reach voters of all races and ethnic backgrounds.

It was great to see, and I think people that never cared about voting or elections or conventions are now on board and interested in what both candidates have to say! This is conversation for all it’s the best in quite a long time at least in my lifetime and I hope that this pushes our people to become more involved in the grassroots of change wherever you can make a difference please don’t talk about it be about it!!! Honest truth is I am never into politics. I don’t even live in US bt I gotta tell you I follow Obama’s news in every way and yesterday I was in joy when i saw Michelle and Ted speaks. They moved every part of my body. Ted is just a sweet man who knows what American needs just like Obama. And Michelle is just this beautful intelligent black woman who believes in her husband and knows that American needs change and her husband can do that. This woman inspired me in every way. She was just so flawless in every word she said and boy did i say how beautiful she is and her two beautiful daughters? I pray that American people wake up and Vote for the right candidate to be in the white house. It’s time for a change that American can believe in. She is humble and so is her husband. I loved how her story was told by her mother. And i loved how her brother Craig came and introduced her. It was beautiful moment of all. This election will be historical. So Michelle has memorized every episode of the Brady Bunch. I might have believed it if it was the Cosby show. I find it hard to believe she had a Father’s Knows Best childhood. What fatherless friends did she have? How did she face the racism around her? Was she not shaped by black culture at all? Where was the church in her life? Was there not any sense of injustice mixed in with all that alturism? What was her personal story with women’s issues? Who were her teachers and who influenced her life? What was her family’s experience in civil rights?

This is not going to hold up well compared with Cindy McCain’s compelling story of overcoming addiction, adopting black skinned orphans from East Asia and a son in service in Iraq.

oh sigh bite the dust already. She has spoken on her lack of acceptance when she was in Princeton. She has spoken about her challenges fitting into the Ivy League Community and how she always felt like an outsider looking in. At the same token she has chosen to focus on the future and not revere in the past. She has chosen not to focus on sob and sad stories of racism and sexism and look to the future. How hard is it for people to grasp the concept of change. She has clearly overcome several odds to get to the position that she is in.
As for your comment about Cindy McCain, I wonder how close to the American values she was when she was involved with a man who was still married and who eventually left his practically disabled wife for her. Incase that was lost on you, the man in question is Mccain.

“So Michelle has memorized every episode of the Brady Bunch. I might have believed it if it was the Cosby show.” Cosby show wasn’t on 30 years ago moron! And what she’s black so she can only watch “black shows”?!

As for the Brady Bunch comment, by the time the Cosby show came about, you know Michelle was not a tiny kid anymore so the thrills of cramming her favorite show were probably over.Yes she may have watched the episodes but memorizing them at her age would not be normative. Hell I know the words to episodes of the Cosby show but Fresh Prince which was one of my favorite shows, I assure you I do not know every word to, So you need to stop and its nothing short of laughable to think that Cindy McCain can command a stage as well as Michelle did, That is sheer comedy

sigh you have some serious issues. Do not make a comment if it is not factually correct trying to hide it under the guise of missing the point. From what you wrote, your point was to negate her message of shared common experiences with black people and to state in some way that her story is less compelling because she did not go through an addiction episode. Her story of her father and his struggles and her deeply-rooted need to return to the community and leave corporate America for that cause is just as compelling a story as any and if you cannot see that, I have nothing else to say to you. You can sigh on that if you want, that seems to be the one thing you can do with clarity

No disrespect, but are you simple or slow? I never said it wasn’t factual, it was referencing how Mrs. Obama comes across as a fictional TV character/family…I have no idea what you’re talking about…but ummm…yeah

I’m just trying to understand how you could take everything in my post and make it appear as though, my purpose was to state how Mrs. Obama was at home, literally memorizing the transcripts of the “Brady Bunch”, and “The Cosby Show”..smdh..WHOA

It is funny how Judas has not commented on Michelle Obama’s speech. That’s right; he has nothing negative to say about her. If Michelle had done something less than remarkable he would be in here spewing his filth all over the message board. The sign of a real Uncle Tom isn’t it? Only gets his kicks when black people are portrayed negatively. But to see a classy, intelligent, uplifting black woman go out there and shatter years long stereotypes, Uncles like Judas won’t get their kicks but they will get kicked….hahaha

Let me stop before people start catching feelings…lol

Only a simple or slow person would have a complex and have a pressing need to put someone else in their retarded category. And if it isnt the convenient disclaimer before the rude comment, Girl save that mess for someone else. Perhaps you need some clarity and I will provide you some. You made mention of how unbelievable her watching the Brady Bunch and cramming it was and how much more realistic it would be had it been the Cosby Show. My point was the idea of her knowing the words to the Brady Bunch isnt remotely unusual for the age she must have been when the show was on. And why does she have to know the words to an all black show only. Next you said she did not address her racial and sex related struggles and I mentioned that those issues have been addressed not once but several times and she chose not to focus on that yesterday. How hard is it for you to comprehend the above and yet you have the nerve to call someone slow. Only one who is pathethic has a need to demean another. If this is slow then I am proud that slow has earned me that Yale law degree

Oh last night brought tears to my eyes. I did not get to see Ted but I heard it was awesome. I am so proud to call myself a black women. I feel like I have something to look forward to and never have I ever seen a President and first lady to look up to. I am 31 years old and I am proud to say I am apart of this history in the making. To see Michelle speak, and her kids, it gave me a sense that they too are just like me(with only one house) lol! I realized last night that OBAMA will win this. God is ready to see a change in this country within all of his people(black, White, Asian, Hispanics,,etc). I will continue to pray for them and their safe journey. Psalms 37 says ” For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones”.

@68 You sound like freakin JUDAH, wouldn’t be surprised if it was you under a guise. Pick up a book, magazine or research her for heaven’s sake. That speech was not a detailed account of every facet of her life. If you want to know more, get off of your lazy ass and READ. And it definitely wasn’t a speech on “Being Black In America”. It was a speech on her personal view of her husband, and why we should vote for him and how she and her husband have raised their daughters. It was to show everyone she is a normal American who had a normal upbringing that people of all colors can related to. It sickens me when black people always try and make things about being black. Get over yourself!

And are you really serious about “Cindy McCain’s compelling story on overcoming drug addiction”? That sounds like every other trashy white women’s story in this country. Damn near half this country is dependant on prescription pills, and it’s the norm. What the h*ll is so compelling about that??

I swear this women can’t do anything to please anyone. The republicans were saying her speech was too soft and that it needed more meat. If she gave them the meat they requested, then they would’ve labled her a militant.

She is a dignified, articulate, beautiful black women. She is what our young women need in a role model. Matter of fact the Obama’s as a family are a role model in and of themselves.

Sis, what is your problem, lol? Why can’t you just chill out and do you? Be easy. I wasn’t even going to comment but it seems as though your bleeding in your panties. Number 85 is not me, I have no time or patience for childish games. Though I do agree, you are extremely effeminate. If black people had the same “passion” about the issues in their own communities that they have when trying to uphold this system and attack anyone that threatens the white man, they’d have the kingdom already. I listened to this speech that the sister gave and she, like her husband, says nothing. Something must be bothering your spirit that you feel compelled to go from post to post seeking attention from myself.

Are you looking for a real opinion? Are you a homos*xual? Am I a racist or is Joe Biden? Have you researched this man? What is an Uncle Tom? Are you intelligent enough to know what you’re saying when you speak it? The Bible tells us that “two cannot walk together unless they be agreed.” (Amos 3:1). The democratic national convention featured a known rapist and murderer like Ted Kennedy, and he was held in high esteem and applause by the crowd. Joe Biden is a known racist but he has been made Obama’s running mate. Michelle Obama is a member of the Council of Foreign Relations. What does that make Obama? Please let me chill out in the cut when I’m chillin’ in the cut.

The little sweet laced heart-tugging speeches that both Barack and Michelle give aren’t winning over whites independence. Why they don’t go after the Bush Admininstration and McCain with both barrels? You have all the amunition you need to winning this election hands down and all Obama is going to give us Thursday is another great sounding speech. If he had chosen Hillary Clinton as his Vice-President nominee, this election would have been locked up for them. Like most Presidents past, Obama needed just to hold his nose and put her on the ticket.

Sis, I’m always unglued, lol. See, I asked you a series of questions and the only one that you felt compelled to answer was one. This is why I cannot respect what you think you represent. You cannot answer any questions from real black people that see what’s going on for real. Black people are lemmings and they become frustrated when they cannot get all blacks to follow them as they follow the white man. Yuo allege that we’ve been “debating” this Obama issue. No ma’am. A debate is an exchange of POINTS. You have not made any points, you don’t have any points, you have not answered one question I’ve asked you, and you cannot.
