POLITICS: OBAMA & BIDEN IN Springfield, IL

Monday, August 25, 2008

Presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) with his wife Michelle and his Vice Presidential pick Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) and his wife Jill on the stage in front of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois over the weekend. After much speculation, Obama finally chose Joe Biden as his VP Nominee (click here for that post). Make sure to view the video of Biden speaking to the crowd, when you keep reading.

I tell you, I love the Biden pick and I so happy he did not pick Hilary. Hilary and Bill Clinton should just go away, they are very divisive, polarizing and was very disrespectful to Obama during the Democratic primary. They were the ones who running all the negative ads and demonizing Obama and his wife. Now everyone is saying how disrespectful Obama was for not even considering her for the vice president. And all those racist people and Uncle Tom Negroes who are saying they will not vote for McLame because Obama did not select Hilary as his running mate are all liars. They weren’t going to vote for Barack anyway, he could have selected Jesus as his running it would not have made a difference. Obviously they are not voting on issues but rather on skin color. If you are a democrat you cannot vote republican issues. Hilary and Obama were running their campaigns on the same issues, so if you were going to vote for Hilary you can vote for Obama. But like I said these are all excuses, smoke and mirrors and we will win without them.

Michelle Obama was doing an interview on TV One this weekend with Roland Martin(?) and it was very hard to listen to because she used a lot of “ums” and “ahs” throughout the entire interview. Her message got across but it was like she was extremely nervous or she was constantly searching for the right thing to say. I think she will have to tighten up her public speaking skills if she gets to be the First Lady. No hate. Just keeping it real.

I love these people, I think they are amazing! I think he made the best choice for his campaign absolutely!!! I think if he had chosen Hilary Clinton, he would have constantly had to watch his back, because he would have been undermined at every turn, no disrespect, to Sen. Clinton, but she is a take charge kinda lady who just would not know how to be a #2.

@ Ms Mac

Mrs. Obama, has excellent speaking ability, it must have been an off day for her possibly, she will be speaking tonight at the opening of the Democratic Convention!! This lady is amazing!!

Personally, I am a hiphop Republican and voting Republican. But I’m still fascinated with the Obama’s. I like Michelle and admire her alot. Obama did make the right choice with Biden, despite their differences in the past. You can tell by their demeanor in the photo that they are all comfortable with each other and have the repore to work effectively together. Wish that there would be a black Republican candidate next election. That would have been great to have both black nominees.

I happened to catch the program on TV one last night and I think she did a good job of getting her points across. It’s almost impossible to go without using filler words such as your “um’s and ah’s” if you are asked questions on the spot. Of couse the things she says are going to be scrutinized heavily because of the position she’s in, but she is human and she’s bound to make some mistakes. And I don’t think it’s that bad Judah as far as Barack is concerned, but you’re entitled to your opinion.

I wanted to ask the writer a question (not sure if this was addressed already). Why do you choose to use the adjective ‘Presumptive’ when describing Barack Obama? I’ve seen it used numerous times (in the articles on CL) and more so w/ him than other candidates. Just curious

JUDAH

@26

Sis, when people believe what they’re saying and there is passion behind it, they may stammer of stutter at points but you can see the focus and the intent is there. I don’t pick that up from Obama, nor do I expect to. He is a politician, which basically means that he is a master of witchcraft. He doesn’t have to believe what he’s saying as long as you believe it. That’s what magic is all about.

*********************************************************************
i am not the writer but i did just want to let you know the reasoning…When you hear Barack Obama the “Presumptive” Democratic nominee or John Mccain the Presumptive” Republican nominee this is simply because they have officially been voted as the nominee until the roll call vote at the national conventions respective. While it is true that the threshold has been reached to become the nominee, it isnt official until the votes have been counted at the conventions (which starts today). it is very possible, but unlikely, that all pledged delegates for obama can change their minds at the convention and vote hillary (and her name will also be on the ticket). this is why it is important for ALL ELECTED DELEGATES from their states attend the national convention to cast their vote for Obama 08! hope this helps

@ NaijaQT,
I’m not stating an opinion. I am pointing out a fact and anyone who saw the interview could see that she literally went through the entire thing over-using these “fillers.” Nobody’s crucifying her and she’s not perfect. We can all stand to improve on something.

@ ms mac
as a politician ( in training that is lol) u are trained how not to use filler words because it makes u less dominate of the debate, it makes seem so imperfect, out of control, and so on. to hear a politician actulaay use these fillers shouldnt make u think twice, instead, u may want to think twice about the politican that has the right answer for everything, ie hillary clinton. not to bash her, but why do u think she is so damn good at debates? she’s trained how not to seem like the everyday person, how to not stumble, how to hold her head high to the sky even when she is lying through her damn teeth. i must admit, barack ums and ahs are annoying, but whats the difference from saying “thats a interesting question”,george bush, or ” i appreciate u asking that question”,john mccain. those are fillers as well but i bet u never thought about it like that.

I agree no one is perfect. Again, if you think that she stammers a lot that’s fine. You say it’s a fact, but what proof do have besides the interview that she did yesterday? Honestly, I think it’s pointless to argue whether or not she stutters a lot, the important thing is that she is able to come across as a representative of the people based on the programs and ideals she supports and I think she was/is able to do that successfully.

@ Judah
Point taken. That’s an interesting way of looking at politics.

@ Bobbi and all the other people that are taking my criticism of Michelle personally.
This is not personal. I am stating the obvious and I am merely pointing out the first thing they teach in Public Speaking 101, Speech 101 or Communications 101. She was giving a televised interview and I was EXTREMELY distracted by her over-use of those fillers. You are taught not to use those type of words constantly because it detracts from the overall message and gives the impression that you are unsure of yourself. She used it from the beginning to the end — sometimes more than five times in one answer. No one said she should have a perfect answer but if you are speaking publicly your speech should come off with some clarity and definitiveness. Her causal tone may appeal to you but it irritates me. I don’t even like hearing all those ums and ahs in everyday conversations.

As for Hillary, McCain or Bush, I don’t even watch their interviews half the time because they are prepped beforeahand. Most of the time their Press Secretary or someone like that has already seen the questions and they are screened. Furthermore, they are adept in the art of stalling. These are the games politicians play. I am aware of that.

It’s okay for Michelle or Barack or any other public figure to be criticized. And if they’re in this for the right reasons they will accept constructive criticism. No need to get offended. I’m sure they’ll catch on to the game too.

dukesman2000

Some of you guys are talking about Michelle and Barack Obama use fillers. What that is is deep concentration to make sure they say the right things. They know that John McLame’s campaign staffers, Uncle Toms (like Judas) and radical right wingers are scrutinizing their every word. John McCain can make a mistake and it is talked about for at most, a day. But if Barack or Michelle farts it is talked about for weeks and months. Look at Michelle’s comments about her being “proud of America for the first time in her adult life.” I hear people talking, some blacks too, trying to distort her comments call her a terrorist and say she doesn’t love America. I hear it all, “Oh, Barack Obama is not a patriot. What is patriotism? Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and supporting your government when it deserves it. Does our government deserve our support? First of all, WTF is she or any Black person for that matter is to be proud of? Slavery, affirmative action, the fact that black people have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good? Then I hear them say, “Hey, she went Princeton and benefitted from the American dream.” The same way they look at the common black person is the same way they look at every black person rich or poor, educated or not. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality of the black race – Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

And please, some of you guys have no place to criticize how someone speaks. Have you seen the sentence structure and grammar on these posts? Pick the beam out of your eyes before you look at the next person.

Brother, no disrespect to you, but you think on a very low level. You think that you’re for black progress but you don’t know where to start so you certainly have no idea how to finish. You say that I’m against “every black issue”, lol. I don’t know what that means. I’m against the issues that black people have, not black issues. You’re for “black unification”, but you want to contribute to a system that was created to make people like you think that you have a say in who is put into the figurehead position known as the president of the United States. Have you done research on Joe Biden or do you not care because he is with Obama?

Did you hear that I’m in favor of Ron Paul, lmao? From what reliable source? This “Bobbi” character? I don’t think I could pick that devil, Ron Paul, out of a lineup. You a funny dude. Does that make sense to you that I would be in favor of any politician, much less a so-called Republican? Do you read or browse? I’m against this sytem, do you understand that or not? I don’t know what other language to type that in.

I’m sorry, but I’m still questioning his decision to pick Biden rather than Clinton. people say she’s divisive, but what role would she really play as VP? She wouldn’t hold any executive powers and would basically do whatever Obama told her to do. Clinton could ‘ve filled Obama in as far as forigen policy is concerned, not to mention if elected he still would have to elect as Secretary Of State, who’s job is nothing but forigen policy issues. We had the Republicans but now we’ve given them the upper hand. They were weak, but since everyone from the media to short-sighted negroes played into this bogus claim of “Clinton Baggage” they now have two strong candidates on their team that have been in the media’s eye for months. There is absolutely no speculation as to what they stand for or who or what they support. Now Obama’s supporters are second guessing his message and wondering why he picked a serpent as a running mate that’s not bringing anything to the table as far as support is concerned, not to mention he’s back to square one and dependant on Clintons voters to get him over the hump. Seems to me that Obama’s traded a paved road for a dirt trail if you ask me. Oh well…I’ll still support him when the time comes and we’ll see how things play out.

@ Bobbi, I used the (?) because I didn’t know if I was remembering his full name correctly. I know of him and have seen him many times on many tv shows, CNN, etc.

@ Karen, please drink a cup of sit your ass down. How do you know I didn’t graduate from Yale or Harvard? lol. And so damn what she graduated from Princeton? That means she’s infallible, beyond reproach?? Your attitude is exactly what’s wrong with a lot of Black people today. How dare someone you hold in high esteem be countered???? Hilarious!! Quit treating people like Michelle or Barack like they’re Gods. They’re not. They’re everyday people like me and you who have a different set of circumstances.

It’s really sad that when someone gives their opinion or states something that’s otherwise designed to uplift another Black person, people like you act like they have no place to talk. I guess since Michelle graduated from Princeton and I presumably didn’t then she knows everything and I know nothing, right? And I guess in your mind a Black woman who isn’t an Ivy Leaguer has no right to correct another Black woman who is, huh? Change up my mindset sis. No one knows everything and nobody’s perfect. If I called her out her name or slandered her that would be one thing. But I didn’t. I merely commented on the way she carried out an interview, which ironically was far from the “Princeton” way. lol

Brother let me get this straight…what you are telling me is that your actions/words betray your intent? Really I dont know you and I don’t know what ingredients you are made of but judging by your divisive attitude towards Black progress (that is what Obama stands for) I can only call it as I see it.

We are all looking for a solution to the problem. Maybe you have the solution but you spend more time and energy kicking dirt on black endeavors rather than suggesting positive changes. So my advice to you is, if you have nothing good to say or nothing positive to contribute keep your diatribes to yourself.

@ Dukesman

I don’t think that you’re capable of getting what I’m saying straight at this point brother. My words don’t betray my intent, they just seem to be extremely difficult for you to grasp. I have no idea why because it is not quantum physics. If Obama stands for “black progress”, prove that. The first thing that you will do is get emotional because you know that you cannot. This interplay honestly is getting tedious and repetitive. Many of you black men want to point your sons towards Obama because you’re not men enough nor intelligent enough to guide your sons yourselves. Obama has not been brought forth and cultivated to raise your children, nor to be a hero to the black community.

The solution for the black community is evident but very few black people want that. They want to come together with the white man by any means necessary. That is the “unity” that you are referring to. It obviously has nothing to do with empowerment of the black community. The scriptures tel us that a “double-minded man is unstable in all his ways”. That is very pertinent and you are an excellent example of that. You claim to want “black progress” but you favor a man, simply because he’s black, that want unity of all races. I wonder; do black people think that if elected, Obama’s going to come out of the White House with a black beret, black leather jacket, and his right fist in the air and say, “We got dis my niggas!!!”. Lol. Gimme a break.

First of all, I would like for to stick to the facts about me. How can you say that I want to unite with all the white race when I have openly expressed the notion of separation? You even called me a “separatist.”

Secondly, I have never gotten emotional on this post, if I have come across that in our discussions, I apologize. We are just having a heating debate. Like the saying goes “It is better to debate a question without settling it, than to settle a question without debating it”

Now, I strongly believe as a parent, if someone asks your kid who he or looks up as a role model and if your kid doesn’t name you being the parent, then you have failed. I point my kid to no one. I don’t even point him to me. All I do is lead by example the best way I know how. I tell me kid that his mistakes are mine but all the efforts are his. So he should go out there give it his best and don’t worry about short comings, mistakes or failures, I am here for that.

I DO NOT SIDE WITH OBAMA BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. That is a ridiculous thought process. You are saying it as if black people are just voting for Obama because he is a Negro…Please, brother; do not insult black people’s intelligence. So you are saying if coon bro Flava Flav was running president black people would be excited to vote for him too? LOL….that is absurd.

I mean, if you cannot see the confusion that you are spouting then I don’t know what to tell you. There really is no debate between you and myself because you don’t have a leg to stand on concerning this. I believe that if Flavor Flav was running for president and the mass media had the power to re-create his image as they have Obama’s, you and many other negroes would vote for him. Yes, I believe that. Again, have you researched his running mate, Joe Biden? Have you seen how this man has made racist statements against the East Indians? How do you think he feels about a negro?
