A day after his historic speech in Denver, Presidential hopeful Barack Obama and his running mate Senator Joe Biden hit the campaign trail via a bus tour. Their first stop was Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the duo will continue the bus tour for the next few days to gain ground in key battleground states.
MCCAIN’S SURPRISE PICK
On Friday, Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his surprise choice for running mate.
McCain met Palin at a Washington meeting of the National Governors Association in February, discussed the position by phone on Sunday offered her the No. 2 spot on Thursday at his home in Arizona. Many are calling this move a “considerable gamble” considering he and most Americans barely know her and just two years ago she was mayor of a small Alaskan town.
When Obama announced Biden as his running mate and the McCain campaign launched an ad asking why was Hillary passed over, I couldn’t help but think that McCain would probably choose a woman. I just had no idea it would be someone so far-fetched. The McCain campaign has always remarked of Obama’s experience or lack thereof, but Palin is even less experienced than the first-term Illinois senator.
According to McCain, though, “She’s exactly who I need. She’s exactly who this country needs to help me fight the same old Washington politics of ‘Me first and Washington second’.”
RNC POSTPONED?
Republican officials are considering delaying the start of the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul because of Tropical Storm Gustav, which is on track to hit the Gulf Coast early next week. White House officials are also debating whether President Bush should cancel his scheduled appearance at the convention on Monday.
For Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain, Gustav threatens to provide an untimely reminder of Hurricane Katrina. While renewing memories of one of the low points of the Bush administration, it would also take away from McCain’s acceptance of the party’s nomination.
Analysts say that both Bush and McCain will need to respond quickly to unforeseen problems and stay ahead of unfolding events, something they failed to do in the week after New Orleans flooded.

“an economic crisis” and perhaps I should have used the pronoun “we” in that first sentence as I’m a gen X kid too…but you know we’re always accused of being lazy and entitled.
@Dem Tyson, clearly you are an Obama stan who looks up to him as if he was The Messiah.
In political races, NO ONEs hands are clean. Absolutely no one. See, what you just did was accuse Hillary Clinton of saying horrible things about Barack Obama. So obviously you missed Obama’s negative campaigning against her. You missed the lies he spread about her and NAFTA. You missed the race card that he played, YES HE PLAYED THE RACE CARD, that actually made Hillary and Bill Clinton look like racist, when they were clearly not. Obama is just as guilty as Hillary when it comes to negative campaigning. And the media DID kiss his a**. Luckily, neg. campaigning is the legacy of primary presidential elections. So get over it.
Americans are so ridiculous. Black people know that if Obama had not been running for President, they wouldve all been riding the Hillary Clinton bandwagon. So please save the b.s. You know u loved the Clintons in the 90s. Hillary wouldve won this ish.
Why are you acting like you didnt?
Black people are not voting for Obama just b/c he’s black. Although that’s part of it, and its okay, as long as you do your research and see where he stands on the issues. Black People vote for Obama b/c he’s black AND he’s a good man, as far as we can tell. And when I see Michelle Obama and their children, I know he is.
Obama DID NOT beat Hillary Clinton by a lanslide. They were neck and neck, with Hillary winning the popular vote. The Only reason why Barack won was b/c the DNC, Pelosi, Howard Dean, and other party officials were pressuring Superdelegates to vote for Obama. They controlled this whole primary election. And they’re all totally useless. They can’t even do their damn’ jobs in Congress.
*SIGH,*
McCain’s pick was ridiculous and it will be his undoing as women are INSULTED by the implication that any woman can serve as a replacement for Hillary. He will lose and horribly… All Obama has to do now is play up the fact that he chose Biden because he actually wants to change Washington and though an Obama/Hillary ticket would have meant 18 million more votes for him, Biden’s experience was in the end better suited to his goals/plans. I think many very logical conservatives even will eat this up…
#40 , shelby you are a GENIUS!
basically covered everything i had to say, thanks =]
ObamaO8!
*but it WOULD be interesting if some more hardcore republicans commented,
a large majority of us are democrats
#1 & #2 took the words rite out mi mouth
Yall better look at the polls. Mccain is doing his thing right now. The future VP is the governer of a Major state. Look up her stats. Look at the start record. She doing her thing on government reform. You might know her because she doesn’t live to have her name in lights, but ask anybody in congress she is not the one to be played with. She did what Dems were afraid to do when they took over congress. and she is Pro Life. You should already know that Women over 40 and the faith base loving her. She is one of us. A mother who worked her way from the bottem to the top on her own meirts. She went to a regular school, and had regular life. When her state was going in a direction against the people she did something about it and not just complain like alot of us here. Dont count her out. She is what little girls should look up to, not beyonce or video models.
And @ 54 You defind this women who in my eyes far better the The Clinton lady as a Bit*h shows the hate that you have for women. We will never come together like that. If that what the passing out at Obama’s Table I’m glad I on the other side
obama is up almost 10 pts. in the gallup poll (49-41)
EXECUTIVE experience means nothing in this election because neither presidential candidate has it…so Palin’s 1 yr and barely 7 months of it doesn’t really add anything…and let’s face it Alaska’s population is smaller than some cities in the 48 contiguous states
does she even know the constitution…(she has a bachelors degree in journalism)
let’s face it she doesn’t sure up the far right because they were going to vote for mccain anyway
Alaska has only 3 electoral votes and it always goes red so that doesn’t add anything anyway
Under ETHICS investigation for abuse of power for firing her safety commissioner cause he wouldn’t fire her ex brother in law ( abuse of power reminds me of bush)
With the chance that the president can possibly replace 1 or 2 justices in the supreme court if mccain is elected roe v. wade is toast
I seriously doubt hillary’s supporters will let her waltz in the white house on the coattails of all of her ( senator clinton’s) hard work.
One thing that I can say for Obama is He is doing the right by stay away from race. I am tried of these so call black leaders getting mad because he doesnt thank them at every turn. I was watch Tavis Smiley and it was to black Prefesser talking about how great his speech was but they should have been thanked along with Martin luther King. Yea they were at the civil rights head but lets not forget that is the Freedom Ride ( started by northern White College students) that was the start of Civil right as a National issue. The same ride that Martin Luther King and the (SCLC) did not want riding through their city. And let us not forget that Obama is not the desendant of slaves, but is from of a man born in one of the oldest nations in the world, a regal and prosperious people so it is in his blood to lead. ( still not voting for him. So I’m sure that he owes The Crew ( Dr. Cornel West and his buddies) Isnt this the samething they did to Colin Powell when he was elect to the # 2 spot in the us millitary. When we all know as a fact that Harry Truman paved that way
alright i’m an Obama supporter (mostly b/c i’m a democrat and support my party at all times) BUT i think you guys are being really harsh to Palin. to say she has NO qualifications is absurd because it’s not like Obama has tons of experience either. and from what i’ve heard she’s done a lot of good for alaska as #61 stated. and yes her being a woman did help her in the VP nom, but there are other women he could’ve chosen and he chose her so obviously she has something else aside from wearing a bra. that being said, i can’t stand this woman’s viewpts./policies and i hope that women do not fall for the ploy. there are a few disgruntled hilary supporters (that’s another thing, stop bashing hilary supporters b/c as disgruntled as they might be, you know most black ppl would have been MAD too if obama was in hilary’s position and would have reacted in exactly the same way) who may switch their vote. i heard one woman say she would. in general, most won’t because their views are just too different so i’m not really worried. i’m worried that they (some HRC supporters) WON’T vote. the republican party is definitely more united right now
hey smart people overturning roe v wade will not make abortion illegal. It will give states the right to ban abortion. the way it was before roe v wade. Four state had legal abortion. What it will do is force the world to see what most medical professional already know. Abortion is a major thing. It’s not just something you for you to do if you forgot to take your pill and got 4 hundred dollars laying around. There is no requirement to provide health irelated information. You have a harder time getting breast implants than an abortion. The two women behind the cases roe v wade and doe v bolton ( Norma L. McCorvey, and Sandra Cano met both these ladies very nice) admitted that the caes where presented under false pretences. Norma L. McCorvey was not raped and never had a abortion, Sandra Cano was told to get her kids out of foster care she had ( to get rid of the child she was carrying). Both women have since ask the courts to overturn their cases. So its bigger than the right to chose this is a women health care issue. Look up the Justice Foundation.
And before we get in to it’s a womens choice, look at it like this. It’s people choice to buy homes with price tags they cant afford with adjustable rate they know will go up, but we still expect the government to step in and make it right. Should we expect the government to at least take a look for the 1 million women who have appeared before the highest court in the land detailing the Physical and Mental injuries. Lest not forget over a 100,000 men who have come forward with issues in relation to abortion.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU JOHN MCCAIN FOR HANDING OBAMA AND BIDEN THE TICKET TO THE WHITEHOUSE!!!
AGAIN THANK YOU!!
I agree with #10. I’m tired of the games too…
I’m sure other countries are looking at America and laughing at some of these silly choices & tactics that are being used in choosing prospective leaders of the USA. [I'm referring to McCain's choice of VP here...]
I am really surprised by John McCain’s pick and offended really! So he thinks that we as women are unable to look at the facts in front of us and make a sound decsion of who we will vote for and that we will vote based off of our emotion and vote for him because he has woman on his ticket? Shame on you Senator McCain..what a cheap shot. Frankly, I believe Govenor Palin is in experienced and is NO HILLARY CLINTON! What is Govenor Palin’s educational background, political strengths and has she ever been a staunch academian like Hillary? I believe the answer to that would be NO NO AND HELL NO!!!! Then on top of that I know the secret service does not feel like keeping up with all her damn kids…as a professional woman she should have known the unwritten rule is to stop at 2.5 kids!
Read up on Sarah Palin’s pregnancy cover up for her 16 year old daughter. The 5th child is said to be her daughter’s. It’s all over the net. McCain obviously didn’t vett this woman.
I WAS FLOODED!! WHO THE HELL MCCAIN THINK HE IS? THIS WOMEN THINK SHE CAN JUST UP AND GET H.CLINTON WOMEN VOTE JUST BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMEN. PEOPLE LET US NOT FORGET THE REASON WHY WE ARE VOTING(FOR CHANCE). IF AMERICA IS STUPID ENOUGH TOO FALL FOR MCCAIN TRICK AND VOTE FOR HIM AND THIS B&$CH I WILL BE MOVING TO ANOTHER COUNTRY BECAUSE AMERICA WILL FALL ON ITS FACE. I PROMISE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“OBAMA 08″
Do you know how many years that cunt will set us back if dude croaks? They will go back to doing back alley abortions and the US will be the wild wild west. OBAMA 08!!!
They are dumb
McCain underestimates the intelligence of voters, women in particular. This sad attempt to draw women voters in his corner isn’t going to work. There are still issues the have to be addressed and with his selection I suspect Obama will be questioning Palin’s qualifications. I think people have to think about where the Republicans have taken this country in the last 8 years, and if you honestly want it to continue in that direction, then McCain is your best bet. Grabbing some anonymous woman on the ticket isn’t going to put him ahead of Obama. It just shows the type of leadership we’ll be in for if people do not get out and vote for Obama.
How the hell is Palin less experienced than Obama when she was in public office for 5 years before Obama even ran for his senator term, not to mention she’s actually a govenor in charge of important decisions and commanding the Alaskan guard? Obama a first term senator even though thats an accomplishment in itself wasn’t running around making decisions, heading committees there is a thing called seniority in congress….
Palin is a good choice because she went against her own party charging them with corruption, its nice to know even if they may not win that there is someone who is on the ticket who would stand up against pork spending and other useless things that just hurt the american people. We can’t say the same for Joe biden…
Good point Darius but are the Republicans going to tolerate her “fighting for the little guy” at their expense? I think what helps John Mccain in picking her will also hurt him and his party down the line. Yes, this woman is conservative but doesn’t seem like the kind of woman to just sit by and look pretty because the big wigs within her party tell her to. As she becomes more famiiar with policy and such, I think she might be just as outspoken as she was back in Alaska.
I think we should look for a lot of in-fighting within the party if they really go with this woman.
@Jules44
I will have to disagree with you on this. It is for that very reason that Mccain chose her. He also bucks the party and always the first one to call Bush out when HE thinks bush as made a mistake. What people fail to see is that these two together make the perfect conservative. Not just Republican. There are dems that dont agree with abortion but go along with the part because of issues facing their communities There are republicans that dont always think the problem is the govenment ( Ron Paul people) and people need to take more responisblity for themselves. They are tapping all the folks in the middle. There are some people who really dont care that there is a black man running or about abortion, they are paying their home notes, working hard, and have health insurance. The regular people that who she will connect with. Not rich people, and not poor people, but the people who seem to get overlooked in almost every election because they dont have a cause. Lest we not for get the Millitary. Its on thing to talk to spouses and soldiers it’s quite another to lead troop. Of which she does vey effectiviely. These are groups with big numbers that the Dems havent tap and the Reps are just now addressing. Its going to be close. al we can do is wait and see
FIRST OFF DO NOT THINK FOR ONE MINUTE THAT OUR WONDERFUL WOMEN OF THE US OF A ARE GOING TO FALL FOR THIS AT ALL! IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE THING IF HE WENT AND HAD PUT A WOMEN ON THE TICKECT WHO HE KNEW TRUST AND HAS HAD A MORE THAN ON MEETING WITH RELATIONSHIP WITH! ALSO LIKE MYSELF A BLACK MAN I DONT THINK WOMEN DONT WANT TO BE THE TOKEN FOR ANYTHING THEY WANT TO MOVE AHEAD BUT ITS ABOUT BEING EQUAL NOT JUST GIVE ME THE JOB CAUSE I’M A WOMEN OR CAUSE I’M BLACK! SARAH PALIN IS NOT A GOOD CHOICE TO RUN FOR VP! THERE ARE PEOPLE AROOUND THE WORLD WHO WANT TO WIPE US AND OTHER PLACES OFF THE MAP! SEE THE GOP IS STILL GIVING US SHOCK AND ALL THIS IS NOT THE TIME NOR PLACE JOHN! THIS IS OUR LIFE AND YOU JUST SLAP WOMEN AND THE REST OF THE USA IN THE FACE! JOHN MCCAINE WE SEE YOU WE KNOW WHAT YOUR ABOUT AND ITS NOT CHANGE ITS MORE OF THE SAME!
some ofyou seem not to realize why Obama culdnt pick hilary. Repubs were hoping on Hilary to win the nomitaion b/c they were going to use Bills past for all the negative tactics.
she would have been a liability for Obama b/ c of Bill.
when obama won the repubs didnt know what to do to beat him
but McCain who said that he was going to run a positive campaign had no choice but to show his true colors and go negative like repubs always do.
hes doing the same thing to Obama that Bush did to him in 2000. Mclame is no longer a maverick. he’s moved to the right to try and sure up is based so didnt want him in the first place. they wanted Romni.
Mccain has even hired Karl rove and his hencemen.
Mccain claims country first. but is only ambition is to run the US. he lost twice already going for the Presidency and will do the same for a 3rd time
#69.
do you not realize how far right palin is. she’s prolly as right or even more to the right of Bush.
