POLITICS: OBAMA HECKLED IN FLORIDA; LETS PROTESTORS ASK HIM QUESTIONS

Saturday, August 2, 2008

Three young African-American protestors, and two white women, interrupted Barack Obama at an economic town hall in Florida Friday, accusing the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee of neglecting the black community.

The protestors — who held a sign reading “What About the Black Community, Obama?” – said the Illinois senator had not been active enough on issues of interest to African-Americans, ranging from the impact of subprime mortgages to the shooting of Sean Bell and the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina.

Obama urged the audience – which began to boo the hecklers – to calm down, before addressing one of the men directly. “I think you’re misinformed. Everything you mentioned I did speak about,” he said, listing legislative initiatives and statements on those issues as the men continued to shout at him and the crowd began to chant “Yes, We Can,” the Obama campaign’s cheer.

Keep reading to see the video of the young man asking Sen. Barack Obama his questions and so on..

I guess I am optimistic, then. Because what it takes for to “revamp” this system black people are not willing to do. But I understand your frustration. Politics alone is not bad, it’s the people who govern, who have implemented a racist and oppressive system thus the words politics have become synonymous to racial biases and oppressions. I cannot just sit back and accept that this is plight of our people and just say that this is the way it is and this is the way it is going to be. I have a son who I am raising in this country and we cannot just sit on our hands do nothing, brother. If we do this then what kind of future are we leaving for our children? And you have to understand Barack’s position, if he leans one way so called pundits and Uncle Tom Negroes are going to slap the “Angry Black man” label on him. Obama has to moonlight as a unifier, inclusive candidate and a candidate for the people and all that other shit that these racist bastards want to hear. Because remember the nail that sticks up is the one that gets hammered down. You have to speak the white man’s language of hypocrisy. You cannot let him know your motives or else he will find a way to make you change course.

Also, my views on separation were not derived from fallacy or from some regurgitated doctrine; it is merely from common sense and self pride. I do not feel the need to ingratiate myself on the white man when I know he doesn’t see me as a human being. I don’t believe in separation without a substantial base. And any black man in America who wants to be separated from the white is within his right. It’s like a rape victim wanting to go live with her rapist, how absurd is that? With that being said, I believe in the brotherhood of man, all men, but I don’t believe in brotherhood with anybody who doesn’t want brotherhood with me or my people. I believe in treating people right, but I’m not going to waste my time trying to treat somebody right who doesn’t know how to return the treatment. I don’t believe in running to the white man to solve our problems because he is cause of our problems and he doesn’t have the moral capacity to undo his wicked deeds. So when we run to the white man it’s like running from the wolf to the fox. That is where my beliefs lie.

You’re an extremist brother, but that is ok. Extreme conditions breed extremism. Remember Patrick Henry said “Give me liberty or death. That’s an extreme thought process. So we are echoing the same sentiments…lol. Also, you seem to quote the bible a lot. What religion do you subscribe and do you know that religion is the biggest vehicle of separatism right behind slavery? People have been killing and maiming under the banner of their cross, and under the name of their god for many years….even the KKK is a Christian outfit.

See now MYPOV is calling you Judas…lol

Those hecklers were clearly paid and planted there. If they’re truely passionate about the conditions of the black american community why not heckle at a McCain speech as well? The republicans are the main ones who never address the issues within the communty. What, just because Obama is black he must be the only candidtate to speak on black issues?

Obama handled that very well. McCain would’ve thrown them out with the quickness.
Obama actually gave them a chance to speak, listened and responded. That by no means is a coward. That right there shows you that he cares.

@ JUDAH, I can think for myself. A lot of the shit you say-although well written- is dumb, Im not going to waist my time going back and forth with you. It’s redundant. I usually see valid points in statments made by others with whom I disagree, however with you, your comments make no sense, it’s well written with no substance, just malice and bitterness. Your hatred speaks louder than the points you attempt to make.

@ Judah (Judas):

“When you say that he is “forcing the nation” to view a black man as a legitimate leader, what does that mean? Do you believe that he came out of nowhere? He generated the highest amount of campaign funds in the history of America. Do you think that he did that off of his message? To generate money, people must INVEST in you with the prospect of a return on that investment. No disrespect, some of you black people are too simple for words.”

When I say that he is forcing the nation to look at a Black man as a legitimate leader, I mean that he does not fit conveniently into any of the stereotypes that exist about Black men, they can’t deny that he has the intelligence at least (unlike our current President) to lead this country. Unlike yourself, he isn’t belligerent, and he can discuss an issue without resorting to the juvenile tactic of name-calling. Who’s a coon? I’m not and neither are any of the people posting their opinions on this site, it’s a free country and we don’t all have to agree with one another. You seem to be frustrated by the fact that few people here agree with you and because of that you resort to name-calling, it sounds like you’re a little insecure. I’m a young, confident Black woman who doesn’t see herself as a second class citizen and I am intelligent enough to think for myself, and I happen to support Barack Obama for President. And no I don’t think he’s some sort of messianic figure who came out of nowhere or that he’s going to “save” Black Americans or any Americans, but he IS the best Presidential candidate that we have in this election.

If you don’t like what’s going on in the Black community, don’t just sit at a computer complaining about what other Black people are or aren’t doing, DO SOMETHING yourself! Otherwise you really don’t have a right to complain and make such venomous comments; rather than sounding intelligent you sound like a hypocrite who has nothing better to do with his time.

YES THEY ARE TO BLAME. I JUST WISH OUR PEOPLE WOULD WAKE UP AND NOTICE THEY HAVE BEEN BRAIN WASHED TO HOLD ONE ANOTHER BACK.

Knowledge is POWER

#62 and all of the other posters here who are “misinformed” on Obama’s stances on issues important to the black community should probably spend less time on CL and more time researching. He has spoken to the NAACP and the Unity: Journalist of Color recently and eloquently addressed many issues facing the black community. To all of those posters saying that he has not “done” anything, what exactly do you mean by that? He has introduced legislation and written articles on the issues to draw attention to the problems not only facing the African-American community, but all communities. What have you done to improve your community? Have you tried to help the fight against AIDS by working with community programs to inform the black community about the fatal effects? Do you speak to students to encourage them to continue their education? Have you ever collected signatures to get a referendum on a ballot? Have you ever contacted your representatives in local and federal government to express your frustrations about the current system?

Do not believe the snippets that the media is feeding you on your nightly news. Please do your research and do not blindly vote for ANY candidate because of his or her race. Also, do not for a second believe that Obama will share all your views because the black community is itself very diverse with many people from varying backgrounds and viewpoints. Also, do not believe that he will solve all your individual problems, particularly those you got yourself into. Obama is more concerned about reforming education and taxes, making sure every American can receive health-care and affordable housing.

I feel that Obama answered that question honestly… I feel that the black community just because he is African American feels like he has to put all of the problems of the black community on his shoulders. Like he said and like a lot of us know this is not something that one individual is going to be able to do this we will have to continue to work together those who do actually make an effort and not just sit around fussing about it but then those are the same people who have not voted one time and they are 31…

Mr. Obama has done all that one politician can do to represent us all. As a Gay Black Man, I applaud his campaign, and his desires to bring about change. No single person is going to make everyone happy with everything that they do, but I think this man is solid, and he has my vote and my continued financial support.

I thought that his comments on MLK Day were the most supportive of SGL men and women ever spoken under such a setting. I believe, and hope that he’s the next President of the USA.

@ 34… I understand what you’re saying, but at the same time, I think we’ve given him a good reason to distance himself from us a little bit. From Rev. Wright, to Jesse Jackson, to all the people who think like these three protesters do… he’s being hated on by his own kind so I can understand why he’s trying to detach himself a little bit. You can only bite the hand that feeds you so many times before it gets pulled away. I personally think he’s running an amazing campaign, and he needs to stick to appealing to ALL Americans because that’s what being the president is Supposed to be about. Also, have we forgotten that he’s half white!? I think that is helping him to stay neutral on all of these issues and not just focus on the African American issues alone. Although many of you probably wish he would just stick to African American issues that would hurt his campaign, and more importantly who wants a president that is only going to think about his community and nobody else’s??
