These are Black Militants who clearly have neglected to their research. Militants are by and large ineffective in getting anything done because they fail to see that progress comes from the center out! They were also quite immature in their approach to getting their questions answered. Barack handled it well. I want to see him in office, but his income tax plan is a no go for me.

Obama is such a charismatic and tactful leader. He never lost his control despite being attacked by his own kind. Those protestors only wanted to cause chaos and get TV time — if they really were upset about attacks on the “African community” then they would throw their full support behind Obama and vote for him as the first black U.S. president.

They sounded really stupid saying they never heard Obama talk one time about those issues. First of all, it’s impossible to read or hear everything that Obama says — he’s quoted in countless newspaper articles, has been interviewed hundreds of times on TV and posts a plethora of information on his Web site. Let’s not forget about all the transcripts from Congress meetings and other speaking engagements.

These people are fools, but will not and cannot knock the Yes We Can movement off course.

Because Obama happens to be of a black descent….I think some ppl expect him to treat black people in a special manner. I think that the those guys that spoke out against Obama at that townhall meeting made a valid point. I think that Obama is trying extremely hard to distance himself to the minorities and it has really pushed some voters away. He is trying to appease the white people so he will not lose their vote because he thinks that the black folks will stay loyal to him. I’m was an Obama supporter and over the last couple of weeks, I have somewhat been on the fence. I am a black young african american and I think it will be DOPE to have the very 1st black president, but I’m not a fan of his policies. I have young children and he was against the voucher system that would have given parents the opportunity to send their children to private schools. Obama children goes to private schools, why can’t some of the lower income family have the opportunity to send their children to a private school?? McCain was for the voucher system. Barack doesn’t believe in offshore drilling because we wouldnt produce oil until about 3 years or so. That isn’t a short-term fix but it is a fix that we could benefit from in the next few years to come. It will take about 20 years or more to create some sort of new energy that would have an impact to which we could become less dependent on oil. McCain is for offshore drilling. Barack states we should inflate our tires to the proper level and that would have an effect on gas mileage. I could go on and on and on about Barack’s policy that I do not support. I’m a true democrat and my heart has chosen Barack as our next president, but my mind doesn’t agree with my heart at the current time. I hoping that will change, but Barack keeps shifting his positions on policies and that pushes me away.

I’ve been following this race since the beginning of 2007 and I hope he puts Hillary on his ticket as VP. I feel that if he did that then that could guarantee my vote because experience would be in the ticket. Barack feels that Hillary would outshine him and take away from him being the 1st black president but he has to remember that he isn’t celebrity and it is about our country best interest at heart. If you were to ask me, if he doesn’t choose Hillary as VP then he loses her 18 million voters and McCain wins because the polls are extremely close. Obama should be beating McCain by a landslide but he isn’t. Once he upset Hillary’s Supporters by not choosing her as his running mate then he will lose against McCain hands down.. I spoken to the majority of Hillary’s supporters and almost all of the ones that U have spoken to black, hispanic, latino, and whites have said that they are just waiting for Barack to choose his running mate and if it isn’t Hillary they are voting for McCain. I just hope for the sake of our country that he makes the best decision.

I have been reading these post for the past 10 months and I concluded with this same observation. Are people simply politically retarded and star blinded?

There are two kinds of people on this site…either bandwagon jumpers or just haters. But you get your occasional few who want something more.

These black men who heckled at Obama aren’t different from the few people who post here on this website. Granted, there are some people here who are passionate about this election race and who have important things to say. Some have beautiful passionate things to say about the race and add perspectives that are hardly talked about in the news. But there are others who simply just adore Obama, possibly, for the sheer fact that he’s black. To me it is pointless and will be costly to go drilling. It just makes the nation feel better when McCain says he supports offshore drilling. He’s just playing on our frustrations with the cost of gas. What we need to do is get out of the Middle East, those are the main people who control the prices at the pump.

@ 12. I completely agree with you. Obama is not going to be the president of the Black American community, he’s going to be the president of the United States of America. Not that we don’t matter in this country, but we only make up 12.3% of the population. Although it would be nice for him to tackle issues that effect us directly, there are so many other issues that he has to cover that are more important and that will essentially determine whether he gets elected or not. Namely; healthcare, education, the war in Iraq, Immigration, homeland security, and the economy just to name a few.

He is very smart and he has a good team behind him, he’s thinking strategically which is what all politicians do. He and his wife do have a passion for our community and I’m sure that he will undertake a lot of the issues that plague the Black American community. But untill then he’s running to be president, not a black leader like Jackson or Sharpton.

If he all of a sudden focused his attention soley on the black population do you really think the country (save for the 12% of us), let alone the world would take him seriously. Come on now.

This has nothing to do with “our own race” acting ignorant. He, just as any white person towards a white politician and/or a black politician has the right to ask questions and be critical of any individual who is running for the highest office in the land. Black people erroneously refer to other black people who ask questions or attempt to hold people to task as Militants (just as the American government often does black civil rights activists). There have been white people who have made similar comments about Obama’s actions towards the black community but I definitely don’t think you would call them militants. Hell they once called Martin L. King a militant. I totally agree with what Angel said at #18. We should not expect him to fully represent the entire black population in a such a mixed America, in that case he would be seen as “too black”.
However, People of color should hold Obama to task just as they would McCain. There is no political discrimination here. For centuries white politicians have been in office as well as some blacks, elected by the help of the black community and continuously our issues, concerns, and related topics have been averted and looked over once individuals attain the position they intended to seek. I see such actions as keeping Obama on track. He is in the position to answer questions accordingly and hopefully sway minds. Anyone who does not have the intellect to question what is given to them will fall short every time. Ask questions, inquire, challenge, that is what you were given a brain for. I found it interesting and thought provoking when Obama gave the message on the issue of ‘missing fathers’ and choose to be race specific when dealing with black people directly and race neutral when dealing with whites directly as if there are only ‘black problems’. Acknowledging issues or disagreements with Barack Obama’s relation with the black community is not an ATTACK, this acknowledgment is a common occurrence for every other politician. If anything it helps use to better understand who he is and what he will bring to the table. It is obvious that black people have and will continue to support him we also hold the right to Hold Him To Task! Why do they have to be “militant” just because they want to know what Obama will do Black people? Other special interest groups want to know what he’s going to do for them! They have valid questions. I think the militant brothers were effective in getting Obama to once again bring to rememberance of the people his stance on the issues that were discussed. Obama, cannot speak directly to the black community and say “Brotha, i’m with you on that, and when I get in office any officer, goverment, or political force that rises up against the black community will be punished.” There is a certain tact that Obama knows he must use to overcome these issues that ill us as a people. He is one (1) person; no matter what position a person has, he or she can not do it all by themselves. The best way for the black community or minority community to overcome our issues and ills of society is to become educated, inspired, and passionate for change and reformation of the black\african american and open or mouths and speak on it. What happen to the civil rights movement?

We say the government isn’t for the people (minotrities) so when are we going to govern ourselves according to our common goals as a people? It all starts with us as individuals. If we want to be more educated, go back to school, encourage one another to do the same. If we want to better our everyday lives, get a job, volunteer, help out younger children, teach someone how to read or \and write. Just start a movement for empowerment of all people. I know everyone is not blessed or fortunate to have the things that they feel would enable them to do better on a large scale, but remember we did not build Egypt in one day.

We are so much more than great athletes, singers, dancers, and trendsetters for America. We are brilliant, blessed, and powerful. That’s what they (those who oppose\oppress us) fear us and our abilities. Once we get this in our mind and let this drive us daily toward the progression we wish to see, we WILL be a better people and no one no system, no politic, no status, NOTHING will stop us.

The protester made very valid points..the way he went about getting the attention on his question was wrong..but i digress. Obama is not perfect nor is he going to make the world all of a sudden a better place, however i think he can bring a much needed change to the country and world.

Anyway, I didn’t care for much of Barack’s response, but I do think he handled the hecklers (who had some great questions, even though the guy who spoke on their behalf was wrong in accusing Barack of “not once” addressing the issues he spoke of) very well. I think the hecklers protesting at Obama’s meeting as opposed to other candidates shows that they know that Obama can bring about the change that they want.

Barrack Obama is not runing for President of Black Americans….He is running for President of The United States of America…he cannot jus focus on primarly “African-American ” Issues… People have to look at the bigger picture there is no president that can solve every issue. He is jus a president he is not GOD. I think Obama does his best to conduct himself in a professional politician type of way without clingin on to issues that only address one group of people.

What’s all this nonsense about “we” are trying to take down our own and whatnot? Just who exactly is “we”. What you are assuming with all this talk of Black on Black hate nonsense, when all those brothas were doing was exercising their God given democratic right to critical thought, questioning, and analysis is that we (Black people) are all the same. Understand the detrimental nature of this assumption - it means, whether you realise it or not, that all Black folk must and will sacrifice their voices on the altar of the mythical and divisive construct of unitary and aggregated Blackness.

Again I tell you, we are not all the same. I understand why white people like this idea, but what’s your excuse? Do you have the same thoughts as a Temne or a Zulu or Southern cat or a Havard elite brotha? Expand your horizons and see the diverse mind-sets that congregate around this term called Black and dot the “terrain Africana”. Should all Black people just fall back into silence as if Obama is not human just like everybody else, and prone to mistakes, pre-suppositons and assumptions about Blackness? He wants to be the president, critical questioning comes with the territory.

He’s not gonna win because we dont question him. Because white people are asking him all the relevant questions anyway, and you know this…maaan! He’s gonna win because (and if) his reasoning (after crtical questioning) leaves the voter’s logic unable to go against itself and vote against him. And if he fails to do that, he’s already told us what we can do: “vote for somebody else, or run for office ourselves”. I know that if he wins, the global Black Mind will certainly have a psychological payday, but assuming you know him because of all this “he’s one of us” nonsense is quite simply the wrong thing to do and might equally lead to a psychological recession.

I’m tired of the “He’s not running for President of Black Americans but for All Americans” I don’t think anyone expects Obama to cater to African Americans but he needs to address our plight uniquely and specifically as he has done for Lationos (as he is very much willing to work with illegal immigrants), gays, women ,working class whites, and jews.

He’s been to native american rallies, gay/lesbian rallies, he’s met with jews, he’s spoken to the world in Berlin, why not with us. No, Shawn Bell and Jena 6 is not enough and it’s trite to think that that would suffice.

Personally, I don’t see anything wrong w/what the brothers asked. The manner in which they asked wasn’t cool at all, but I believe black people are afraid to express themselves b/c we don’t want to be seen as “owning Obama.” Hey, every other group doesn’t hesitate to make mention of their needs, so why should we? Obama handled this in a cool, calm, collected manner. He allowed this brother to ask his question and laid down the facts. Enough said.

We know Obama is not just the presumptive president of black America. First of all, the voucher system says, hey, your kids school is not meeting state standards (ps state standards are mediocre) so we will give you an option to go to another school. Nine times out of ten, the other school is outside of your community. What happens when so many students leave that community? The community shuts down. Vouchers and charter schools are code words for black. Under “No Child Left Behind,” it is not guaranteed that any school has to accept your child. You child could be behind an entire semester, quarter, or even year before they get accepted. Which schools are considered “above standard,” schools where whites are in the majority, or at least they comprise a great chunk of your school population. Now, as a school teacher, who is a part of one of those so called “better schools,” let me tell you. I have never understood why we as a people believe that learning only goes on when white students are present. In these integrated settings, your child is most likely to be racially profiled by scared white female teachers and they are placed in “low level classes” almost automatically. Why is it that black teachers have always been able to teach black students until the sudden emphasis on standardized tests have occurred. Why is it that black students who were taught in black school districts have been able to succeed at the same rates as their white counterparts until standardized testing? You think about that. School vouchers are just another word depend on whites to make it better.

That is a sad thing to say. McCain is always attacked about things at almost every event he has had. I know, been to my share. I have never see him ask anyone to leave. That man did have a point when he call on Obama on his lack of reaction in the Jena 6 and the Sean Bell cases. When in very recent year that is the sort of thing he would have been all over. I think no one would understand the school vouchers situation unless they been in a predicament that they needed one. Because personally I remember when I was in high school my school did not offer anything much above the basics. It was an okay school and all but if you wanted to go to a great college and make your application look better you needed basically more then four or five (or at least ones you took all year) Advance placement courses. You know and these kids did come from poor circumstances but they got good grades and did want to go you know to one of the top ten schools. But honestly they knew their grades would not be looked at seriously because of the school they went to. Like I remember I had a 4.20 GPA and my counselor basically told me that honestly my 4.20 compared to a kid in a better private school was like a 3.5 to some of these colleges I wanted to go to like top ten schools.

And also I remember I took Spanish 1&2. So me and a few of my classmates wanted to take Spanish 3 but my principal said it was not enough students you know to get that class started. And even when we went back to him with more students he said no. Why, I do not know but I will never understand. But having friends who went to better schools they did have a lot of options regarding the classes they could take (especially advanced placement) so I mean that was one of the basic reasons a lot of kids felt that they did not have that many options or should I say resources. And you know for us we had to like try to take a college course while in high school because we did not have that resource at our school. But you know you can get through it you just have to know how to work through your problems and research and find out what other options you have. So that’s basically what I did.

I would like to ask those of you who are saying that “we don’t Have to support Obama just because he’s black” just exactly what are our options? More Republican “big business gets richer eveyone else gets fucked”? or just sit it out and dont participate at all, let them folks make the rules.
Nah! Obama happens to be black, but he also happens to be waaaaay better than any other options out there. We have had a Clinton or a Bush in the White house for the last 20 years. If they were gonna do something for us it would have been done by now.

I truly believe these guys attacked Obama in some sort which was rude as hell, however it might have been the only way they got his attention cause there is def issues that need to be addressed. The people who are complaining about Obama’s perceived lack of interest in issues concerning Black Americans make it seem like it’s so easy for a Black man to run for the highest office in the land, and because Obama has gained the support of many Whites, that he can say whatever he wants to about racism and injustice and White people will say, “Oh yeah, he’s right about that”. If it were that easy to be honest about these issues than Obama would not be the first Black man to have a real shot at the Presidency. The problem is that, as a mixed Black man, he’s trying to be all things to all people, he’s being pulled in so many directions where people want to know “whose side is he on, can we trust that he’ll look out for US?” I’m not saying that he’s perfect or that he always takes the best approach to a situation, but he is having to walk a very fine line in terms of how he approaches issues like the Sean Bell case, for fear of alienating one group or another. He can’t please everyone, and that’s something that he’ll have to learn deal with. But I believe that your characterization of his motivations is way off, I think he is more “pro Black” than the people who are criticizing him realize.

Regarding the group of young men who were heckling Obama, they should have chosen a better approach than heckling while others are speaking. And then when he tried to answer their question, they continued to yell back at him, they continued to shout back and interrupt, not giving him a chance to answer their question. In that situation, I would be thinking, “Do you want me to answer your question or not? If the answer is yes, then be quiet for one minute while I try to answer you.” This is not about criticizing Obama, just because his bid for the presidency is historic doesn’t mean that he’s exempt from any criticism, even by other Blacks. However, I believe that they could have waited until the “question and answer” portion of the town hall to voice their concerns, heckling wasn’t the best approach.

Your support for Hillary Clinton in the primary and then your willingness to vote for John McCain in the general election seems a bit a$$ backwards IMO. By comparison, Obama and Clinton are almost identical when it comes to their positions on the issues. You may look at McCain and think, “well at least I know where he stands”, but if you know that his stances on the issues would not be the best for this country when you compare them with Obama’s positions, then why would you give your vote to McCain? McCain has sold his soul to the rightwing nutjobs in the Republican party, and that particular demographic could care less about minorities, and if McCain is elected his policies would do more to benefit them, not minorities and those who are struggling in our failing economy. He used to me more of a moderate, but because he has done a complete 180 on almost all of his positions because he wants to be President, I can’t tell whether he’s a Democrat or a Republican most of the time, so I personally don’t trust McCain at all.

I do NOT want Hillary Clinton to be Obama’s VP running mate, and I hope that he is able to choose someone else without the continued pressure from Hillary’s supporters and donors. She ran a divisive campaign based on Republican-lite fear mongering tactics. I don’t care how many years of experiences she claims to have. Obama needs a running mate who 1) can help him gain support in the demographics that he is having the most difficulty reaching out to 2) someone who genuinely supports his candidacy and wants to work with him as Vice President, rather than try to take over because she feels that she was entitled to the Presidency, and I believe that she and Bill Clinton would be guilty of that. His best choice for a VP, in my opinion, would be a White male with a working-class background and national security credentials, because I believe that will be the biggest concern for voters when they vote on Election Day.

But the fact of the matter is, he painted Hillary to be a flip-flopper, supporter of the war and a traditional Washington politican. By doing this along with spreading his message of HOPE, Obama won the Democratic Nomination. However, since defeating Clinton, he has flipped-flopped on almost everything. Public Funding, supporting the surge in Iraq, Energy, D.C. Gun Ban and participating in town hall meeting with McCain. As a Hillary supporter, I dont want to vote for McCain and I dont want to give away my vote to Obama. He needs to stick to what he really BELIEVES. He stutters soo much and it makes me nervous. Im anticipating the announcement of his VP as well. As a Black man, I have never been so interested in politics and I must say, Obama, Clinton, McCain and Huckabee all inspired this country this election season.

Even as an Obama supporter since 2004, I was not mad at these young men who had took a stance! It is nothing wrong for them to voice their opinion, in fact, it shows and proves that Black are not one-dimensional as others like to state! White people protest other white people all the time, no one says that White people are bringing each other down, so we should not say this about these young men! I think it is important for things like this to occur during Obama’s campaign, to challenge him! Yes I do believe “we can”, but we can’t move forward unless we understand the challenges that face the steps we make.

Okay… I understand but understand this: McCain is a supporter of Giuliani’s tactics (the same person who permitted violent tactics against non-white suspects) and anti-affirmative action policies. McCain sugarcoats the fact that many A.A.s in the military aren’t holding office by calling the army “the best equal opportunity employer in the county.” He also critized Obama for the whole school vocher thing BUT he didn’t guarantee all low-income families will have a chance for a voucher. ALSO what good will SOME vouches do if the WHOLE public school system isn’t reformed. Be serious and actually THINK. The whole public school system (especially in low income neighborhoods) need reform, so taking SOME kids out isn’t going to do the job. So basically you feel its okay for a million kids to have a chance while MILLIONS of kids are left out? Great logic there! Also McCain is a well known bigot. HE started mentioning the race card before Obama by implying Obama was referring to his ETHNICITY (I’m getting SICK and tired of everyone on here using the word “race” inappropriately… GO BACK TO BIOLOGY CLASS and actually pay attention) without actual confirmation this theory was right. He also disregards the rights of the GLBT community. So you feel its okay to support a man who treats a group of HUMANS inhumanly? Also you mentioned he supports offshore drilling. Also to all the ppl talking about private school being better than public… guess what, its not. First off colleges appreciate kids who have good grades PERIOD along w/ extracurricular activities. Secondly to #76, while you were misinformed. Some colleges look at a high ranking public school because public schools have more diversity than private schools. So what your counselor said was BS depending on the school you apply to. From personal experience, I was accepted to top schools and I went to a decently successful PUBLIC school. When you encourage your child to send essays, be active in school AND their community and meet school Deans (like my mom)… it shows character and that trumps most requirements depending on the admissions board. How do I know all this… because I know ppl on boards from VARIOUS universities along w/ working for one at my old school. So yes.. I know first hand the steam behind the machine. SO don’t exclude the fact that some parents aren’t there to do their job and some kids don’t care which makes the school look bad (in grades and test scores) and the horrible policies of some public schools make it look even worst. If you wanna do something about the school system, a damn voucher is NOT the answer. Reform starts at home so go to your local school board and start doing something and MAYBE it will spread nationally if we join together instead of thinking a voucher will do the job for you. Seriously… what the hell do you expect from public schools when we live in a society that allows teachers to get paid SCAPS while no-talent jackasses get paid MILLIONS (jackasses who also don’t put ANY of that money back into their communities). But you went to a great public school mines was not that great so I had to take extra steps like you were explaining and more to get where I wanted to be which is cool because you have to work hard to get where you are going in life. But I think my counselor at that time said that because in a lot of schools that are not achieving that high in academics some people feel as though the teachers are just letting students get by so I think she was saying getting a 4.2 at that school may not have been seen as a accomplishment to some because you know they may feel as though being at that type of school you may have not worked as hard as another student at a better school for the same GPA and all. So maybe that is what she was saying.
But you know in the end I am where I wanted to be. But I was stating how hard it was for me personally. I do not know the story of every child in public school. But fortunately I made it so I can come back and help others. That’s all I care about.

for starters, obama’s team outsmarted and defeated whut people argued the most powerful political team/ family which is the clintons…most, but as for smearing hillary, there’s no true evidence on obama’s part, however the dumb moves mark penn have done, the media’s exploitation toward’s hillary, and hillary actually BLATANTLY lying about the bosnia trip and lets not even mention bill clinton were mainly at fault…

now to give you up to date with obama so-called flip-flopping…the only two things obama switched up on was A) public fiancing, which he pretty much HAD to in order to financially compete against the republican smear machine which is currently going full-speed ahead, and B) on the FISA bill which is a legitimate beef to complain about, but he at least had the respect to send a letter to all of his supporters explaining his position thouroughly, accept their dismay, and said these are one of the things that people are going to agree to disagree on…and kept it real that not everything he’s going to do, he’s going to get 100% support for, no matter which way he makes his decisions…

as for everything else, he’s been CONSISTENT, the differences is that some things during the primaries were more focused than they are in the general and vice vera…during the primaries he was onlu speaking for DEMOCRATS needs, now that’s he’s in the general he have to speak on EVERYBODY’S needs…but every charge you will claim he flip-flopped on, i PROMISE you i can get a link or a youtube clip stating he’s been consistent…

as for mccain, i ORIGINALLY had no qualms with him, but once he turned his back on waterboarding back in the primaries…i realized his camapaign is suspect, and now the things that his campaign is doing is totally pathetic, because they completely STOPPED on speaking about the issues and whut mccain is going to do for our country and is going off a 100% obama tirade about his character…it’s okay to have a negative campaign, but if you lack anything POSITIVE to speak about yourself as the comparison, then you truely have no offer to give

I understand that Obama needs to meet the needs of every US citizen. I always felt like that was a president’s responsibility anyway. However, the African-American community, which includes those of us out there doing the right thing wit our lives and our children lives, have always been underserved. I know he have to appear impartial in order to win, but he can not keep skipping around issues that impact minorities. We’re the last hired and the first fired, our schools are in shambles, our communities are in shambles, there is a dispropotioned rate of us getting accepted into grad schools and that includes those who busted their ass in undergrad, There’s a disproportioned rate of us getting hired into the private sector, whites get insurance policies for 3 x the amount than we can get insurance policies, banks don’t loan us money for small businesses nearly at the rate that they loan other groups of ppl, and the list goes on. All Im asking for is a even playing field and if he is going to be fair and square then he need to develop some action plans that fulfill the stance that he is taking in his campaign speeches.

Shame on the person saying that “if only we work hard enough and stop looking for handouts”. Puleaze, there’s ppl who worked hard all their life and still have to slay dragons everyday. What la la land ur ass living in. The system is not designed for ppl to “work hard and get fairly rewarded.” Notice I said “fairly rewarded”. You probably on somebody job kissing ass just to get what’s owed to u anyway.

Personally, I’m tired of hearing him and McCain fuss over who is cuter or more popular. I’m not taking anything from the brother. It’s nice to see him doing his thing and representing our race well, but many of us do that on the daily basis too. Someone mentioned militants. If it wasn’t for militants then ur ass wouldn’t even be able to do half of the things u do today as a black person. So please don’t talk out the side of ur mouth. Somebody had to stand up so ur black ass could sit down. If that makes them a militant then so be it. You not saying nothing with Bush Neo Republican ass running this country. Yes, he is a neo republican and they do exist-very extreme and very blantantly racist and economically discriminatory. The sad thing is that everyone in the House and Senate has either been paid to play along or threatened.

Just becuz Obama is black does not mean that Im goin to vote for him. If he can be impartial then so can I. As far as Im concerned I might vote undecided like I did in the primaries. He could have easily stepped out of character and took a different direction when answering the question but he was very respect and honest about it.

Without questioning the motives of the gentlemen who stood up in protest, because they had every right to express their concern–as this was a town hall meeting– Senator Obama handled this with pure class. He addressed them with respect and answered their concerns fully, without alienating the needs of his supporters of other races. Although I wish–in a perfect world–that Black people would stop trying to tear each other down and seek to find understanding and support, I have to realize that it’s not a perfect world, so the next best thing is to learn how to educate in hopes of changing minds and perceptions. Senator Obama did a great job of that, without giving an answer full of political rhetoric.

This is why I admire this man so much, he politely and calmly put that young fool in his place..that young man did not even know what he was talking about, he did not even do his research, and because of that Obama shut his ass down with the quickness, but like a “gentlemen”…did I say how much I love this Man, he is the ultimate..so classy, brilliant, and sophisticated…what he was trying to do is teach the young man some manners..obviously something his Mama was not succesful at! I’d like to see you deal with that on top of having to court all the different ethnic groups that exist in our country to the point that every one of them is convinced that he will look out for their interests. What do you want him to say? Who is the majority group? Who has held the majority of the wealth and power in this country? WHITE PEOPLE! They are watching him very closely to see “whose side is he REALLY on?”, and their support will mean the difference between winning the election and having the opportunity to do what he can to address issues concerning Black Americans and problems that all Americans are facing, and not having that opportunity. Politics is a game, if you know that you aren’t one of the “deadbeat fathers” that he’s referring to in the Black community, then relax. Black people possessing any significant amount of power in this country is something that many White people fear, whether they’ll admit to it or not. Obama understands this I believe, and that is why he’s approaching the situation the way he has. If he says, I’m going to do this, this, and that for Black people, consider the election done, with McCain as the winner.

Umm…#3 calm down….this election has gotten alot of attention in our community and you know it so, don’t generalize us. Now…about the topic at hand. The protester has valid points however,….I do recall Obama speaking about all of these issues…some of them multiple times. The media just did not PICK UP on them. The media did not feel that those issues were important enough to be broadcasted so, it leaves us with the impression that he never talked about them…which isn’t true.

Another thing, the Black Vote alone will not get Obama in office. He needs as many votes from ALL AMERICANS to get into the white house. And yes, we do have issues that are more specific to us and hurts us the most HOWEVER, we also face the same mainstream issues as everyone else and we need to support this man and his ideas to really get universal health care coverage, decrease dependence on gas, and bring our troops home. WHAT liberals wishing to save the affirmative-action system did not need was the growing realization that some of the biggest winners in race-preference schemes are not Americans at all. Consider: The prestigious University of Texas Law School maintains a minority set-aside admissions program for blacks and what it terms “Mexican- Americans.” However, because the school does not inquire about citizenship, “Mexican-American” in reality means anyone of Mexican heritage who is not in the U.S. illegally. “There’s no philosophical objection” to foreign nationals receiving the preference, said Stanley Johnson, who heads the schools’ admission committee.

As unlikely as it may sound, millions of immigrants and foreign visitors are eligible for — and many are actually using — affirmative-action benefits to get a head-start on U.S.-born minorities, not to mention white Americans. In effect, they are getting off the plane and moving right to the head of the line.

How is this possible? In the late 1960s, it simply never occurred to government planners that there would be so many aliens in the U.S. or that so many would be considered minorities.

The results can be startling. Take, for example, a company that has a goal to hire ten blacks. Nothing says these have to be African Americans, and they well may not be. All ten may be people who until now spent their entire lives in another country.

Whatever the long-term fate of affirmative action, Congress and the Administration should act now to put a stop to this bizarre extension of the program. A mere paragraph or two of legislation and a short executive order could end affirmative action for immigrants — the entitlement nobody planned and hardly anyone wants.

Florida Restores Rights to 115,000 Ex-Felons

A new state rule in Florida calls for more than 115,000 former felons who complete their sentences to be given back their civil rights, including the right to vote, hold public office, serve on a jury, and obtain state and local licenses for certain types of work.

The rule by the state’s Board of Executive Clemency ends a policy that, until now, required a panel to act individually on every restoration of rights requests.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist – attending a two-day summit of state officials, lawmakers, community activists, prison ministers and others brainstorming ideas for keeping former inmates from returning to crime after they are freed – says the decision to restore civil rights to ex-felons is based on fairness and being a part of a democratic society.

“Once somebody has truly paid their debt to society, we should recognize it,” explains Crist, a Republican who had initially pushed for a broader clemency program.

“We should welcome them back into society and give them that second chance,” he told a crowd of law enforcement officials and advocates for prisoners’ rights in Tallahassee. “Who doesn’t deserve a second chance?”

First of all, his platform is not against legal immagrants who enter the country correctly. He and I share the idea that we need to take care of Americans first and wheather you were born here or got your papers thats you . I believe in Basic Human Rights, but at the sametime we have to protect our borders. so if you are here legally paying taxes like a American then fine. In addition to you education statement. The Federal governmant AKA Dept of ED/NCLB pays about 1% of any schools district’s total buget. The county and city are resposible for funding educations. Fact. Now the school voucher which I am for will not begain to touch the cost of private education but it in some relief for parents who take a greater intrest in there chlids education. not to mention that you are still require to pay property tax in your county which is the major source of funding for schools in your area. every area has a mayor or school board that oversee how monies are spent toward each school they are over. I suggest that more people spent time at the city council meetings or school board meeting to find out what is going on instead of compaining and doing nothing. Obama cant fix it niether can maccain, it is a state issue. and it needs to stay that way

If you read my other post you’d see that I indicated that I was actually addressing Mrs. Not Me instead, that was my mistake. It’s interesting that you supported Giuliani because he is “anti-crime”. As a person of color, I am saddened to know that you supported him. Do you know how many cases of police brutality occurred against Blacks while he was mayor of NYC, and he did absolutely nothing about it? He always took the side of the police, even in the case in which a Black man named Abner Louima was sodomized by NYC police officers after they took him into custody, and now the man suffers permanent damage to his internal organs.

The only “America” that McCain has at heart is the America that consists of White Americans, wealthy White Americans. McCain is about war, that’s all he knows. And he has sold his soul to the right of the Republican party, if he is elected he will not be the more moderate politician the he used to be, he has flip flopped on practically every issue and everything that he USED to stand for. I am a supporter of universal health care, I am pro-choice and I do believe that we need a timetable for when we’re going get out of Iraq because we shouldn’t have been there in the first place, there was no urgency for us to be there, we should have been focusing on Afghanistan and the threat that Iran poses to us and the rest of the world. We will have to agree to disagree on policy issues.

I can only speak for Jamaica because I know all the intricacies of Jamaica’s plight. Jamaica is in the state that it in because of the exploitation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)

After Jamaica gained its independence from the British in 1962, which in my mind they shouldn’t have, because they did not have the proper infrastructure as a county to stand on its own; its equivalent to putting a 6 year old on the street to fend for him or herself, it’s a disaster waiting to happen. And the disaster did happen. Now with these looming perilous conditions the Prime Minister went to the IMF to borrow money $50 million at the time. The loan’s terms and conditions crippled the country because it stipulated restrictions on the Jamaican government as far as schools, high interest rate which the government had to pass on to its people, to farmers. Now the farmers had to hike up their prices to see a return, which local folk couldn’t’ afford. Then the Jamaican government had to import these processed foods from the US. For example milk was so expensive Jamaicans were forced to purchase the imported carnation milk…yes, powdered milk. Then before you know it, the Jamaican population is poverty stricken and anywhere there is poverty there is going to be criminal activities. Even furniture maker commanded one of Jamaica’s few growth industries has to turn to making coffins, cashing in on the violence which foments beneath a thickening pall of poverty and gloom.

I notice that this devil Obama stutters obsessively when he is cornered. The only thing that he could do is regurgitate the obtuse political responses he had when these previous issues occurred in the black community. All his stances are purposefully non-committal because he is non-committal. His attempts at answers were indicative of a man that has no real answers. “Dont vote for me”, lol. In other words, if you believe in racial unity as a method of salvation for our people, you are an adherent of a doctrine of confusion and thusly you are “Lynched”. This is the point of the genesis of the Obama phenomenon. It’s a step up from Kerry and two steps up form Gore, with the sole intent of getting blacks to put their hope and energy in a system which was designed to use them, not empower them.

Now you want Obama, a man who’s platform is to “bring everyone together”, in office because you believe that he will create “change”. If you are a “separatist” as you’ve claimed, why would you vote for this man? If you are “for black people”, why would you care for politics? What are the chances of all black people coming together? Multiply that by infinity and those are the chances of all races coming together. There is a place for politics and the political negro because all the world’s a stage and everyone must play their part. I don’t deny that. At the same time though, America is heading into a very traumatic period, and in moments of trauma people retreat to their own, they don’t arbitrarily hold hands with strangers. This is what makes black people that would rather die than be unified with each other easy pickings for the political machine. America and it’s politics are predicated off of you forsaking your history to uphold the ideals of “America”, i.e. the banking elite and oil magnates that Obama shills for.

When I say that he is forcing the nation to look at a Black man as a legitimate leader, I mean that he does not fit conveniently into any of the stereotypes that exist about Black men, they can’t deny that he has the intelligence at least (unlike our current President) to lead this country. #62 and all of the other posters here who are “misinformed” on Obama’s stances on issues important to the black community should probably spend less time on CL and more time researching. He has spoken to the NAACP and the Unity: Journalist of Color recently and eloquently addressed many issues facing the black community. To all of those posters saying that he has not “done” anything, what exactly do you mean by that? He has introduced legislation and written articles on the issues to draw attention to the problems not only facing the African-American community, but all communities. What have you done to improve your community? Have you tried to help the fight against AIDS by working with community programs to inform the black community about the fatal effects? Do you speak to students to encourage them to continue their education? Have you ever collected signatures to get a referendum on a ballot? Have you ever contacted your representatives in local and federal government to express your frustrations about the current system?

Do not believe the snippets that the media is feeding you on your nightly news. Please do your research and do not blindly vote for ANY candidate because of his or her race. Also, do not for a second believe that Obama will share all your views because the black community is itself very diverse with many people from varying backgrounds and viewpoints. Also, do not believe that he will solve all your individual problems, particularly those you got yourself into. Obama is more concerned about reforming education and taxes, making sure every American can receive health-care and affordable housing.

Mr. Obama has done all that one politician can do to represent us all. As a Gay Black Man, I applaud his campaign, and his desires to bring about change. No single person is going to make everyone happy with everything that they do, but I think this man is solid, and he has my vote and my continued financial support.
