After much speculation on who it might be, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has chosen Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate.
A text message, sent around 3 a.m. Saturday announced, “Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee“.
In an introductory post on his official website, Obama’s campaign said:
Joe Biden brings extensive foreign policy experience, an impressive record of collaborating across party lines and a direct approach to getting the job done.
We have our team, but we also have our work cut out for us.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the leaders who will bring the change our country needs. But they can’t do it alone.
Recognized as a leader on foreign policy and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden brings years of experience that could counter GOP arguments that an Obama administration would be inexperienced on foreign policy, analysts say. Biden is also considered one of the most influential voices on terrorism, drug policy and crime.
In an email to supporters Saturday morning, Obama said:
“Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois — the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago. I’m excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can’t do this alone. We need your help to keep building this movement for change.”
Let me be honest and say I didn’t know much about Joe, but I’m happy he’s on the ballot because now the GOP (old white people) will stop harping that Obama doesn’t have experience. From what I read Joe has 35 years of experience. Great pick! OBAMA, OBAMA!!
******Great choice IMO he picked someone who what everyone says he lack that is
*******many years in the senate.
WOW! Thanks for breaking the news to me CL! I love this site! Obama/Biden 08!!!
All I can say is finally!
It was killing me to know who it would be
just glad its not Clinton, that would have been an assassinations’ shoe in.
I knew he’d choose someone who could counter his inexperience in key areas. On top of that, he can possibly pick up some of the old white voters from McCain who were riding the fence. Great decision.
I jst pray to the lord up above that the right president is chosen. Whether Obama or McClain. But my vote is for Obama!
How is this a good choice? This man has a record of talking out the side of his mouth and not getting himself in trouble. He talks reckless at times; have we forgotten his ridiculously insensitive remark about Barack earlier during the primaries while he himself was running for President? He is quoted as having said in an interview with the New York Observer:
“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”
Sheesh…Obama better watch who he aligns himself with because there are so many people who are looking for any little thing to take him down. This guy is a liability.
That was a seriously strategic move and I’m not sure if there was a better choice. It’s good that he didn’t select someone as young and green as him but it was also smart of him to pick someone that isn’t considered a direct competitor for attention, face time, etc. Plus, Biden would be a good choice to carry this country if Obabma got elected. I really think it was a good one too, considering Obama’s shortcomings. If he is elected, he’ll have the advantage of having someone like Biden to carry a lot of his weight.
Smart choice i would say. I tried to stay up last noght to find out who he was gonna pick but after watchin O riley ignorant ass I fell asleep.
and I agree wit that last bit #9
#9 that was exactly what I was thinking!
REGISTER TO VOTE!!!!! Time is winding to be eligible to vote in November, so please REGISTER NOW, if you haven’t already.
I was beginning to worry………
I’m not too sure about biden, but at least he alone can stop mccains recent climb in the polls.
We have some happy republicans this morning lol! The commercials have already started rolling in on televison before i could get out of bed (Mccain could not wait). What a terrible decision…This guy has said himself that Obama is not qualified or ready to be president lol (and yet he picks someone who was NEVER behind him from the start). He actually voted FOR the war in Iraq, he has also showed support to Mccain NUMEROUS times lol, and he has a strong dislike for people who carry guns, and please let’s not forget the slogan, “The White House is not a place for on-the-job training” (this was Biden’s slogan when asked whether he thought Obama would be better than Mccain). Welcome President John Mccain….he will surely win by a landslide now (with or without Clinton’s support lol)! Obama do you realize what you have just done? By the way, Biden has been in the Washington scene for the past 35yrs. (longer than Mccain and Clinton)…Change my ASS lol (this is about to be good)! Clinton supporters (18 million), gun carriers, the south,…(all out the window with this choice)! Who is advising this guy lol?
Not happy with choice (that’s all I have to say)!
***I knew it would be Biden. Please people go out and register to vote!!!!
***Obama 08!!!!
Obama could have chose Jesus as the VP nominee, and Republicans still would have said it was a bad choice. That’s just politics. There’s going to be conflict, but ultimately there’s going to be compromise. Biden has talked reckless at times about Obama and other issues, but personally I think that Obama needs someone who can add some “straight talk”. Biden is going to say what he means, and not feel bad about it. Biden is experienced and his experience is going to go a LONG way. And about the remark Biden made about Obama being “clean” I don’t think it was some kind of a low blow. BUT, that is just MY opinion. The only way this pick could hinder Obama’s campaign is that it is basically Obama admitting he doesn’t have experience in foreign policy as Biden does, just as critics suspected.
jayla07
Hillary lost 3 months ago, stop with the 18 million folks, there are plently of former clinton supporters that meet with us monthly at our BO support group here in Atlanta.
LOL, Biden says Obama is not ready, well however McBush chooses I sure they will have alot to say about him since McBush is hated by most conservatives.
Brace yourself for President Elect Obama on November 5th
i just hope Obama knows what he’s getting into, I get a bad vibe from Biden
Why I still wont vote for Obama
Biden-Brownback Resolution ( this is a bad plan. It is more or less do more with less)
In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian Americans — moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.” ( very funny to some people but not to me. Sounds like a black people eat chicken joke to me)
Coalition on Urban Renewal and Education focuses on personal freedom and personal responsibility as solutions to poverty, rather than welfare dependence,( I can get with this very well, but doesnt this offend obama base, the people in need)
pro-teacher union voting record. He supports abstinence education, is against student vouchers and voluntary prayer in schools. ( if we dont pray anywhere else we need to pray at school)
He also supported the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, which abolished education grants for prisoners ( Wow what else are they going to do and where will that money go)
Biden supported the 2007 Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill. He supports guest-worker visas, and the building of a wall along the border. He voted to provide Social Security to illegal immigrants and supports a path to citizenship.( now this should make every American anger. First he wants us to build a wall which will cost money, then he will give away money that we dont have to people its not suppose to go to)
Biden cites high health care and energy costs as two major threats to the prosperty of American businesses, and believes that addressing these issues will improve American economic competitiveness. ( Now how does he expect this to happen without easing resrictions on things like employee health and life insure, overtime, and workmans comp)
Biden favors open dialogue with North Korea and describes them as a “paper tiger” unable to directly cause harm to America. However, in June, he called the situation one of the “the three most important things that the next president is going to have to deal with”, along with Iran and Iraq. ( I’m glad he came to his senses, but wasnt he one of the old guys that told John Kerry that bin Laden was not a theat, you know before he blew up the buildings)
Biden favors diverting drug offenders out of the nation’s prison system. He is against making stricter laws for drug offenses but helped in the creation of a Drug Czar. He voted against restrictions on children obtaining violent videos and supports funding for the Boys and Girls Clubs in underprivileged areas.( lets get the drug dealers out to make room for the real crimnals Dead Beat dads, pay you child support is all have to say.
don’t give me that sh33 that barack is not experienced; i ask you was geo w. bush HELL NO. he had dick cheney running this country behind the curtain , like something out of the WIZARD OF OZ. ALSO I’AM SICK OF THIS SH33. that barack has to define himself to the people. bullpudd’n it should be the other way around the man can’t do nothing right . them jokes called republicans challenged him to go over to iraq ok when he did which they was hoping he would fail but it back fired he was embraced by the world leaders. them jokes player hated on him saying barack is arrogant. seems like he can’t do nothing right to the cacuasians [most of them]. where did geo w. bush get his exp. i’ll tell condi rice, dick cheney, colin powell before they ran him off and all them old heads from his daddy’s admin. the first bush, so obama haters give me a break. sean hannity and them right wing radio talk show jackals have got the cacuasians circling the wagons. like bob beckel said once ; WHAT HAS THE REPUBLICANS EVER DONE FOR THE AFRICAN AMERICAN? at least the democrats will kiss [us] blacks before they “F” us. the republicans just come straight out and just say “F” EM. while they trot out a few happy negros who claim they are republicans. what the track record for blacks in that republican party. noth’n thats what.now all you house negros its in your dna. you know it take this and run w/it.
Woop, Good choice. The dream ticket would’ve been a disaster and this will help balance the ticket by strenghtening his perceived weakness in foreign affairs and inexperience. I’ll have to read up about him though – (i hope he hasn’t cheated on his spouse or anything, it’s what all politicians seem to do)
#18 please take a look at this commercial and YOU tell me what YOU think lol? The proof is in the pudding (it does not take a brain surgeon). Open your eyes and ears to what’s going on….This man in NO WAY supports Barack Obama (no matter what lies you here). We’re not even going to get on the racist comments that he’s stated lol. Notice how he says that he would be honored to run WITH or against Mccain lol! Just copy and paste the link…(i’m interested in your response)
I just read ur comment number 9. I’m defo checkin up on him
i didn’t get my TEXT LOL… but i’m glad he chose Biden, even though I don’t know too much about the guy. I trust Obama to make the right decision for himself.
EVERYONE PLEASE REGISTER TO VOTE!

jayla07, the Republicans who are congratulating Biden are Republicans like Lugar and Hagel, people who normally align themselves with Democrats. Secondly, Biden isn’t saying anything different from what the average white folk and lets be for real black folks were not saying originally. We as blacks have to be forth right and admit that we were skeptical about Obama even running. What did we say, “Nah is not the time. They gonna kill him.” Does any of this sound familiar. Second, if this country chooses McCain, a man who just finished preaching that he wants to reinstitute the draft, hey don’t we get what we deserve as a nation? And, lets stop looking at one side. If Biden is the type that holds some Republican values, he can draw moderate Republicans and Independents who were skeptical of Obama. By the way, many political analysts have already said that the ad showed by the McCain campaign demonstrates that this combination is actually a threat to the McCain campaign. One as you have mentioned, Biden is an inside Washington face that can get things done. Also, Biden has the ability to bring a more bi-partisan point of view to the table. This is how Clinton did it. Clinton hired Republicans in many decision making capacities, and no one complained, but we want to label Obama as being dumb for doing the same thing. When Clinton got ready to choose Supreme Court Justices, he went to the Republicans. When he reformed Welfare, he went to the Republicans. Clinton was a very Republican president running under a Democratic title. You know the old saying, “I’m willing to reach across the isle.” This makes Obama look a tad bit more moderate.
Simply, this election is ours to loose. If Democrats would stop complaining about how their candidate didn’t get the nomination, or how they are dissatisfied with who is doing what, we could win the white house. The political atmosphere is fertile for a victory. If we are divided, the Republicans will win. I hate to say it, but Democrats have a real nigga mentality. If I can’t have my way, I’m gonna damn destroy whatever is left, and then I’ll get my message across, but at the expense of the country. WEW…
Good decision!
Register 2 VOTE!!!
I will be there,will YOU!
OBAMA/BIDEN ’08!!!!!!!!!
…THAT’S KIND OF A MOUTHFUL
Fired Up and Ready To Go!!! Lets Get This Done!!!
“Barack Obama is the first clean and articulate and nice looking black to run for office”
“Iowa is better than D.C. schools because lets face it, Iowa has less than 1% black population”
“You can’t go into a 7/11 wthout an indian accent these days”
~~~joe biden~~~
obama will lose, wake up and smell the coffee.
Also….What happened to Obama’s “CHANGE” message lol? Obama stated he didn’t want anyone connected with Washington, but then he goes and picks this racist scum bag (yes i said it), who has been on the Senate for over 35yrs.? Give me a break…His change is worth the tissue i wipe my ass with lol! I’m so glad that God gave me the knowledge to see things through on my own as a young, educated, African-American woman! He’s been contradicting himself since he got the nomination…I won’t be bamboozled! I wish we could start all over again with better candidates, but that won’t happen (GOD only knows what we have on our hands here). I’m getting my butt in church, and that’s where i’m staying!
“If I can’t have my way, I’m gonna damn destroy whatever is left, and then I’ll get my message across, but at the expense of the country.”
True, and it’s sad that it has to be that way. Then again, what do you expect?
Hillary and her husband has said some worse ish than what Biden had said. Even if clinton didn’t do her dirty campaigning against obama and obama still won, he still wouldn’t have picked her as vp because of baggage ie. Bill. Anyway I don’t know much about this guy so I’ll wait & see, I just pray that this doesn’t screw up Obama’s chance @ the white house….
@ Comment 9
And what makes that statement so incredibly suspect? Is Barack NOT the first candidate of color to run for President who has a more universal appeal, is articulate, nice looking and bright? You probably saw the reports today that, in an effort to be “fair and balanced” showed that quote and wanted to say something negative about Biden. And I agree that Biden is not perfect…. but he is the “perfect choice”. Why?
He’s a 65 year old lawyer whose served in Congress since 1973 and a Roman Catholic. The faux claims that Barack lacks experience should be all but silenced to see that he’s aligning himself with someone who has considerably more experience than anyone else he could choose. He may be long winded, but he’s articulate and he resonates well with working class Americans, who at this point may be wavering in their support for Obama (as the polls are showing.)
Let’s stop with the traditional B.S. that has always gotten us in trouble — talking about why we don’t like a candidate (or anybody for that matter) based on some weird feeling and let’s focus on the facts. If you don’t like Biden, sight specific references in his 30 years of service that worry you.
******Register to vote… If I wasn’t working full time and going to school full time I
******would get out to help people register. I think Obama has a real good chance
******of winning this Nov. I can’t wait..
******Obama/Biden 08
Wow. All while Hillary ran she said that Barack lacked experience and people here countered that til their dying breath was exhausted. Add Biden to the ticket and all of a sudden whammo…Barack is lacking and has shortcomings!
How the hell did THAT happen, lol?
AAAAWWWEEEE SNAP!!!! I hope that they can win the white, evangelical, southern vote. Political Affiliation: Barack!!!
HAHAHHHAAAHAA THIS POLITICAL SHITTT IS ABIG JOKE!!!! YA MIND ON POLITICS IS WORSE THAN YA MIND ON DRUGS!
My thing is this…Why are we still bringing up the Clinton’s (her supporters are who people should be worrying about)? We’re discussing Joe Biden as Senator Obama’s vice presidential pick (in my opinion, TERRIBLE MISTAKE). But if you want to discuss this, we can. Senator Clinton never said she would be HONERED to run WITH or against Mccain, and she sure as hell didn’t say that he is what’s best for the country (neither has Bill). She did however speak on his lack of knowledge and experience (which i wholeheartedly agree with). He’s terrible at foreign affairs….and she ate him LITERALLY at every debate! But that’s neither here nor their anyomore (obsolete)…We have to focus on the now people!
“Simply, this election is ours to loose. If Democrats would stop complaining about how their candidate didn’t get the nomination, or how they are dissatisfied with who is doing what, we could win the white house. The political atmosphere is fertile for a victory. If we are divided, the Republicans will win. I hate to say it, but Democrats have a real nigga mentality. If I can’t have my way, I’m gonna damn destroy whatever is left, and then I’ll get my message across, but at the expense of the country. WEW…”
#29 and #35…..This is not about just winning the White House (or dividing a party). I’ve always been an idependent voter….I vote on who I feel is best for the country, so i’m not apart of anyone’s particular party. What is having “nigga mentality”? People really need to get out of this one-sided mindset (it makes no sense)…If i’m not voting for Obama, then i’m supposedly “destroying the country”, or “divinding the democratic party”? People don’t have the right to tell other’s who they should be voting for! It’s not about getting a point across at the expense of the country or sticking together for party unity…It’s about choosing the candidate who you feel is best for the greatest office in the world, “The Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces”, and that’s what I vow to do!
I’ll be honest, I never brought into the idea of an independent voter simply because independents never really have a platform. The platform is just simply, we are disgruntled with Democrats and Republicans. I would like to hear more of what exactly independents stand for because I’ve been trying to figure that out. Not being funny, I would just like to know. Also, Obama is being chided for implementing some of the same maneuvers that made the Clinton presidency the success it was. Clinton always used advisers that did not originally agree with or support him. I did not hear one criticism about this strategy as a matter of fact it was branded as being almost ingenious. If you do not support Obama, that is your God given right. I am talking about the voters who on ever hand threatens to take away their support every time Obama makes any move. And yes, a Biden vice presidency can be looked at in many ways. His differences in policy can attract more moderate Republicans and yes, even Reagan Democrats. We just can’t throw the baby out with the bathwater and say, THIS IS A BAD DECISION. Obama, a black man running for president, didn’t make it this far by being stupid.
Kayla, you’ve done a lot of talking, but you’ve never said who you think Obama should’ve chosen. If you don’t like the pick then who do you think he should have chosen? Honestly, Obama made the perfect pick. Biden brings years of experience that Obama’s critics have been saying he lacks. As for the “change” message, its still there. Obama is THE candidate. If anyone knows their civics, the VP is basically like the Queen of England, they are more of an advisory position.
#23 he can’t do no right according to white people (most of em) Really? have you read the postings on this site where plenty of black folks are not supporting his decisions. Obama has the lead right now and without white support that wouldn’t even be happening. There is not enough black people in the US to have Obama in the lead. So, that being said Obama is a smart man and has gotten this far. Maybe people should back up and stop hatin’ and any racism that is being thrown out there shouldn’t be mimicked by you all.
It seems like a lot of people want to criticize and complain about his pick.. how about you do what he told those young men a while back…. run for President.. that way you can perfectly do it your way.
But if Obama dies or gets killed, then he will be president, so you can’t say that.
I didn’t read all of the comments so someone else may have said this but let’s be honest. After election day, how much will we REALLY hear from the VP? This maybe sad to admit but the most I know about Cheney is the he accidentally shot someone while hunting and he has a connection with Halliburton.
Now thats not to say that you choose the 2nd in command haphazardly or on a whim. My point is that Biden comes with the foreign policy experience that Barack needs which is CRITCAL in the world we live in today.
His job will be to advise on foreign policy. Otherwise, keep the lip shut and stay out of sight.
#42: I believe you may have taken my comment a way in which it was not intended; I agree with you.
@43,
Independents aren’t bound by any party, they have a free choice with voiting with either. They agree somewhat with the Democrats and somewhat with the Republicans so they don’t have a specific party that they vote for for all the times. They could’ve voted for President Bush years ago but vote for Obama this year. And we all know they represent different parties. I’m an Independent AND I’m black but to be honest, Obama still doesn’t impress me. I always think to myself that if he was fully white he wouldn’t be this far..I feel like we black people are just voting for him because he’s black, not all of us but a good handful. I look beyond color, and Obama just doesn’t cut it for me just yet. Having dark skin isn’t what’s going to save our country but a person can try.
Is it just me or is Obama really slipping off the charts lately? It seems as though McCain has really been progressing over the past months, from what I read.
Question?:
If Obama was white, would you still be voting for him, and giving him all this praise?
@36, what racist ish has Hillary said that is worse than Biden? Plz! One reason I can never vote for Obama is because he played the race card against the Clinton’s and succeeded. Now black people believe the Clintons are racist just because Bill Clinton called Obama’s Iraq war BS a “fairytale” and Obama’s campaign spun that into something racist. In fact Obama’s campaign has turned anything negative said about Obama into a game of “THAT’S RACIST” so he doesn’t get criticized.
obama is a slick talker and thats about all
@49 – It’s just you. In your entire post, I don’t hear one word of fact about why you don’t like Barack. I support Obama, but I’m totally accepting of people who choose other political stances. But the point is, HAVE ONE. What politically about Barack don’t you like? And what are the qualities of the candidate that you support?
Tell me you support McCain because of his economic plan being better than Obamas. Or because you don’t like the fact that Obama is pro-choice.
I watched a documentary about our country and I was shocked to see what actually goes on in our government. The government doesn’t care about the average working Amrerican who is making less and less every year. The media shows us just want they want us to see or hear, but they don’t show or tell us the truth. It doesn’t matter who becomes president. It is going to take a very very long time for this country be back like it use to be. Obama may wants to do somethings but he not going to be able to do it. His hands are going to be tied because of these rich elite people who really run our country. He’s for change and I hope he give us that, but those people who are behind the scene are still going to make the decisions to keep their family and the children’s children set for the future (not the average Joe). It is about the money even for the people who we elect to offices (Senate,HR,). Look at our preivous presidents and see what they are worth after the leave office (millions and millons of dollars). How do they make million dollars based on their salary? Now what do you make? I am going to vote for Obama,but this election is going to be interesting. Are they going to rig the votes so that McCain can win like they did Bush? We can vote but the electoral college makes the final decision. They can do whatever with the votes. Is this democracy or what the government and the media want us to believe? This year and the years to come are going to be very interesting!!!!
Barack Obama is an inspirational speaker. He’s not cut out/ready to be president-even his pick for vp told you that! Even though I love to see a black man doing big things this is not the time…we (the us) are in some deep mess. We need a “cleaner” not a “healer” maybe in 4 years Obama(the “healer”) would be a good choice.
@ harris.
I distrust obama, so I could care less about who he chose. Like I have always said, I’m uneasy about the whole “Change” slogan. Not really sure what that means. My point is that his chose in VP dose not make his more appealing across the board to conseratives like myself. Come on a Pro Choice Roman Catholic doesnt past the common sense bar. this makes him look very bad to The Christians votes. And remenber we always vote. Look into the justice foundation. And even if you dont like Mccain Obama’s VP does not cross over even a little bit to our side. Not to mention he has issues with his own party. there were some other folk that had cross over appeal that he could have chosen, but Lets face it he wanted to go against the grain. This man has been in congress for over 30 years. And he usally goes with grain.
Ok, since your a conservative, Obama’s VP pick wasn’t meant to shore up your vote. Most likely you would’ve been upset had Obama chosen Jesus Christ as his VP. You also contradict yourself. You say it doesn’t matter who Obama picked, but then turn around and said he could’ve picked someone better. Which is it? The fact of the matter is Biden helps balance to ticket with Obama. Change AND experience. Granted Biden is a little quick to talk, however, every VP pick comes with some risk. Hillary Clinton would’ve come with the Bill clinton baggage. Tim Kaine would’ve been seen as too inexperienced. Evan Bayh would’ve been seen as too close to Clinton. Kathleen S. would’ve been said to be too green as well and a slap in the face to women everywhere. Al Gore probably didn’t want to be VP again. And we won’t go into John Edwards. Fact is Biden was probably the best possible pick Obama could’ve made.
@Devron
Pro choice is not the only reason, but lets look at abortion. Roe v Wade was based on a lie( look up Sandra Cano) and had no medical information presented at the trial. Weather you believe life starts at birth or not you can not ignore the fact that abortion is a serious medical issue when it comes to risks both mentally and phyiscally. Abortion Clinics ARE NOT require to disclose these risks. This is wrong, and Obama lack of willingness to look at these facts worry me. Not to mention the Male vs the Female rights issue to or not to became a parent( if a woman can change her mind then why not a man). And 49 is so right because Ralph Nader ( White Man) ran on almost the same platform of Obama, but because vote according to what people tell us and not what benefits our issues, John Kerry won the hearts and minds of black people. I voted for Bush.
AHARRIS
this is my point it is a known fact that Obama VP was to help him cross over and get the undecide conserative vote. This guy is not the way to do it. I mean its a win win for me. Because I’m with Mccain. Now to give you an example Thomas R. Carper may have been a good choice that was never considered. He’s a war vet and has experiance governing as a governer. PLUS he has cross over appeal without running off current votes.
People, get over it! There was no perfect pick, Biden will be an “attack dog” against McCain unlike Edwards in ’04, he will take it straight to the republicans, not sit silently-by the side of the road. Biden will be in the race.
And for those who don’t “trust Obama” I say, GOOD! I don’t trust him either, I trust no politician black or white. Vote your head and your heart! McCain has sold out his own platform to become President, if thats someone you can trust, then cast your vote for him.
I personally will vote for Obama, but I will WAIT to see what he does. I am going to give him four years, if he doesn’t impress me, in 2012, im voting for someone else.
Lets not make this too difficult people.
Joe Biden is a good choice for Democratic VP, I’ve always liked him
It would be unbearable to spend the next 4 years under Republican leadership.
#47
If Barack wanted his imput on foreign affairs he would have saved him for appointment of Secretary Of State if and when he’s elected. As VP he’s essentially an errand runner for the President. The only reason Biden is here is to comfort voters that are weary of Obama’s message for change.
