After much speculation on who it might be, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has chosen Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate.
A text message, sent around 3 a.m. Saturday announced, “Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee“.
In an introductory post on his official website, Obama’s campaign said:
Joe Biden brings extensive foreign policy experience, an impressive record of collaborating across party lines and a direct approach to getting the job done.
We have our team, but we also have our work cut out for us.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the leaders who will bring the change our country needs. But they can’t do it alone.
Recognized as a leader on foreign policy and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Biden brings years of experience that could counter GOP arguments that an Obama administration would be inexperienced on foreign policy, analysts say. Biden is also considered one of the most influential voices on terrorism, drug policy and crime.
In an email to supporters Saturday morning, Obama said:
“Joe and I will appear for the first time as running mates this afternoon in Springfield, Illinois — the same place this campaign began more than 19 months ago. I’m excited about hitting the campaign trail with Joe, but the two of us can’t do this alone. We need your help to keep building this movement for change.”

Undecided conservative??? That’s an oxymoron. Do you honestly believe that TRUE conservatives would vote for Obama??? No. The pick was basically about shoring up his foreign policy and experience credentials. Obama wanted to assure undecided INDEPENDENT voters that there would be experience in the White House as well. The #1 criticism of Obama is not that he’s too liberal, its that he’s too inexperienced. The Republican Party would be criticisng anyone who joined with Obama. Just like the Democratic Party would be criticisng Romney, I mean McCain’s VP nominee. That’s just the political game. What else were the Republicans going to do. pat Obama on the back for picking a great vice-president??? As for Thomas R. Carper, how do you know he has cross-over appeal. The only thing that is known about him is he is another senator from Delaware. Furthermore, how do you KNOW he wasn’t considered. It’s possible he didn’t want to be VP. At the end of the day, the question is not whether someone is better or not, its whether Obama would be better at fixingthe economy, fixing health care, and taking care of the War on Terror than McCain?
One reason I can’t vote for Obama is because he voted in favor and spoke in favor of infantacide. A woman in IL testified to babies being born alive after a botched abortion. Obama took a leadership role in making sure a bill that would have protected them would be defeated. He has since lied, saying he would have voted for the federal bill, but it turns out he voted against it and they were identical.

Biden isn’t the brightest guy out there but as long as the VP isn’t Hillary Clinton I’m cool…
Great choice Obama. He needed someone that will ease the tension that white people have about a black man in office. And his qoute about Obama being articulate, smart, etc, was actually a good thing. Although, it could be taken as an insult, the opposite characteristics is exactly how black males are viewed behind closed doors, and Biden just pointed out that Obama isn’t that.
And as far as Biden being apart of the old system, well Obama needs that. Who else can tell Obama who to trust, who not to trust, who to bring into the fold to actually get something done. Also, Obama is really non-confrontational, and Biden seems like he will go for the jugglar and not care who gets upset. Obama needs that.
I’m pretty sure this decision was made months ago, and I’m satisfied. Youth is always inexperience, you need wisdom and life experience in a person to guide you to make the decisions. I’d rather have an old stable person as my second, than a young idealistic seeking glory and fame anyday.
Obama is smarter than I gave him credit, I just knew he was going to pick Clinton.
Obama needed an Obie Wan Kanobi (sp), he needed someone that knows Washington, and has enough Washington experience to get the job done. Biden was probably the VP pick long before this decision was publicly being thought out. I’m impressed. And just because Biden made those articulate statements publicly means jack. Listen to what’s not being said.
@JA
For one, Pro choice (while apparently still a hot bed for some) truly isn’t one of the pressing issues that this nation faces. I am Christian and while I choose myself not to partake in an event that would end the life of an unborn child, I don’t think by stopping the legality of abortion that this has anything to do with salvation. But, I digress, Roe v. Wade or Sandra Cano have about zero to do with the issues that affect us daily.
What I believe will affect the quality of life for the young people who ARE born are health care, education, wages, taxes, social security privatization and the continuing efforts in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq (as well as future conflicts.)
I completely respect your right to vote for Bush, but if you think you’re saving lives by stopping abortion (which, if that’s your stance, clearly your vote is in vain as abortion continues) consider the lives that your vote has cost this country in the killing of some of our best soldiers — men, women, wives, husbands, sons, daughters — over oil that we’re paying $4.50 a gallon for and over weapons that still can’t be found.
You voted for Bush — tell me if you’re satisfied with his performance and in what areas.
YES! no Clinton! ahhhh good one Mr. President Obama
bad choice and people only saying great choice cause its not hilary….racist, racist, racist i say and he was supporting mccain
at one point….why do i get the feeling this is gonna come back
and bite obama in his ass…………………………………….
I was really crossing my fingers that it would be Hillary, but Biden is an excellent candidate as well. I just hope that everyone gets out the vote to make sure that we make a change! Yes we can!
obama/biden ’08!!

You americans are some piece of work…actually, some of you are just way off.
Did I actually read some posts about people reversing Biden’s CLEARLY racists comments because Obama chose him as a VP. I mean c’mon now! These comments, VP or not, are unacceptable! Its not because he’s VP that he’s racism free!
However, politically speaking, this would be Obama’s best choice or worst choice because he chose somebody who is at the opposite of the democratic party spectrum. The polls can only tell us whether his choice was the right choice.
Lastly, Americans MUST STOP USING RELIGION HAS A FACTOR FOR ANY POLITICAL DECISION. Religion happends to be one of those things that has absolutely no concrete outcome. We don’t know where were going, we can only have faith. But at the same time, Jesus’ sayings shouldn’t impede on my health care choices! Every other country in the world, except for middle eastern countries, have largely separated the church and state. There’s a large difference between nigeria and Canada than Afghanistan and Iraq!
Get it together!
I agree with Obama’s choice. He couldn’t have picked a better running mate. I think I would’ve preferred anyone over Billary Clinton..
LOL wow i cant blieve yall think this guy is a good choice! If this dude was real he would have never joined the ticket…in fact if i hear he refused numerous times but was still approached id like him better. I prefer an honest racist backward minded person than a racist backward minded person who’d switch his talk and pretend jus to get to the whitehouse. Then again if i were American i wudnt vote for Obama n e way…honestly ask yourself if Barack were the same color and in the same age group as John if you would still vote for him? If the answer is yes go for it! If not well dont be ashamed to admit it just because you’re black or young. Peace!
THE DREAM TEAM IS IN THE HOUSE!!!
So Obama picked the man who thought he was “clean”. What a freakin joke! I may have changed my vote had Clinton been the pick although I understand whayhe didn’t pick her.
McCain 08
I am happy Obama picked Biden. He was the only democratic candidate other than Obama I said I would vote for. And now that he is the vice, brings it full circle in my eyes. That is the winning team for sure.
I am happy Obama did not choose Hilary. All the Clintons are trying to do s to sabotage Obama’s candidacy so she can run again in 4 years and said “see, I told you he was not electable, now vote for me.”
Mrs. Not Me….
You are the joke….You are not a democrat, you just won’t vote for Barack Obama because he is black. I hate it when people say, “I was going to vote for Hilary but because she lost, I am going to vote for McCain” Please, no one is stupid here. Hilary and Obama’s campaign were based on the same issues. If you vote you should vote on issues not on skin color. If you are a democrat you cannot vote for republican issues. So do not insult my intelligence and tell me you are voting for McCain because of something other than the fact that you cannot see yourself voting for a black man. Just admit it to yourself and everyone else that you are narrow minded.
I understand why he would choose Biden since he has the experience and he’s older and only has $300,000 to his name, so he appeals to the working class and wont make Obama come off as an elitest. It balances things out.
What I don’t understand is how Obama could choose someone who in the primaries said that he isn’t ready to be president and that the White House is not a place for OJT. What, did Biden change his mind on Obama’s experience all of a sudden? Choosing Biden wasn’t a smart move on Obama’s behalf and those commericals that McCain released on his choice for Biden and why he didn’t choose Hillary makes him look stupid right about now.
Also those comments Biden made were racist and there’s no going around it. It seems like a lot of you are covering up for him simply because he’s aligned with Obama now.
LETS JUST PRAY ITS THE RIGHT TICKET. THERE IS EXPERIENCE NOW. TWO MEN WITH SOFT HEARTS THOUGH WE HAVE TO STAND BEHIND THEM TOTALLY. YOU GUYS HAVE TO BE SMART STRONG AND CONFIDENT. GOOD LUCK.
