POLITICS: OBAMA SETTLES ON VP / MCCAIN TO NAME VP AUG. 29 / OBAMA: I WILL WIN

Sen. Barack Obama greets supporters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Monday.

According to aides, Sen. Barack Obama has settled on his choice for a running mate and could announce his choice in an early morning alert to supporters as soon as Wednesday.

Obama issued a command to staff members that his decision not leak until supporters are notified. In fact, neither his choice nor any of the others had been notified late Monday. Aides said his top possible candidates include: Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia and Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware.

As Obama gears up for the Democratic National Convention next week, his announcement will be made with text and email messages early in the morning to take advantage of a full day’s news cycle. He and his running mate will then begin visiting swing states. Plans call for them to be on the trail together for much of the time between the day of the announcement and the day Obama arrives in Denver, next Wednesday.

MCCAIN TO NAME VP AUG. 29

On the day after his Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama accepts the Democratic nomination, Republican presidential candidate John McCain plans to celebrate his 72nd birthday by naming his running mate at a rally in Ohio on August 29.

Possible choices include former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Friends say he has not yet made a final decision and is not expected to do so until after Obama announces his.

According to one campaign official, “McCain views this as the one decision that he has total, utter, nonnegotiable control over.” McCain reportedly talks about the decision with almost no one and has chosen to wait until Obama’s selection is announced.

The Republican National Convention begins Labor Day in St. Paul, Minnesota.

OBAMA: I WILL WIN

Sen. Barack Obama raised nearly $8 million at three fundraisers in California on Sunday.

He told a crowd of about 1,300 at his third event of the evening, “I will win. Don’t worry about that.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called him “a leader that God has blessed us with at this time”.

In a speech to the crowd, Obama said:

“Now, you want to win. And saying it doesn’t make it so. It would be nice to think that after eight years of economic disaster, after eight years of bungled foreign policy, of being engaged in a war that should never have been authorized and should never have been waged, that cost us a trillion dollars and thousands of lives, that people would say, let’s toss the bums out. Toss the bums out, we’re starting from scratch, we’re starting over. This is not working.

So I understand why a lot of folks are saying, this should just happen. Why are we having to run all these television commercials? Why do we have to raise all this money? Just read the papers. These are the knuckleheads who have been in charge. Throw ‘em out. But American politics aren’t that simple.

The fact of the matter is, at a certain point, when government has not been serving the people for this long, people get cynical. They tune out. And they start saying to themselves, a plague on both your houses. They are willing to consume negative information more frequently than positive information, for good reason. They’ve seen how promises haven’t been kept.”

  9. Tracy from NYC

    Hope he chooses Biden.

    OBAMA/BIDEN ’08 & ’12

  10. Shellboogie

I perdict an Obama & Kaine ticket. Gov. Kaine make more sense he has to pick Kaine he has a flawless record and he is Gov. of Virginia. Altough Gov. Kaine may be a bit inexperience. But, he has the state that is imperative to winning the election.

I also perdict that Mc Cain will pick Mitt Romney as his running mate because it will make sense in the eyes of the republicans.

  11. the_one

I am hoping whomever is chosen is someone that the America people who havent would assist in their choice to choose Senator Obama.

  14. Bohwe

How can Obama say that he’s a Christian , yet support abortion and gay rights, I’m sorry but he’s contradicting himself. I’m voting for Obama , but he makes it hard .

  15. Bohwe

Obama will choose Hillary because, he’s planning to give her supporters a chance to be seen at the Convention, and she’s been publicly supporting him, he’s trying to get her supporters on his team. And Obama doesn’t come across as a man who wants to risk not getting the election. So, I think his VP will be Clinton. I maybe wrong.

  16. Mika

Why do you have an advertisement for a “Swift Boat” book against Barack Obama? Are you that desperate for sponsors for your site? That’s incredibly wack! Don’t endorse that type of garbage! Next, you’ll have Ads for escorts and 1800-Talk Dirty! Pathetic!

  17. jayla06

It will be Hillary Clinton…..just watch!

  18. HOTMOMMA001

Well, there goes any hopes for Hillary! Sorry Boo! Obama 2008

  19. boombox

J.Dakar – how does one get on the email/text list to receive the latest info?

  20. FAMU01

Obama better get on his job if he wants to win. His lead is getting smaller and smaller and this conflict between Georgia and Russia is making him look bad.

Nevertheless, I kinda think that it’s just in the cards for him to win. I think the majority of Americans are just ready for CHANGE!!!

  21. Bohwe

Too bad Powell isn’t running or atleast for VP. Obama wants to be everyone’s friend. I want him to take a solid stand on something.

  22. LOD

    Bohwe,
You are right on all accounts!! Obama will pick Clinton.

Morality usually always takes a backseat to popularity, money, and a host of other excuses – sad but true. .

  23. shoyouright

anyone else feel like were at the tipping point??? his victory will signal the beginning of a cultural revolution; his defeat will signal the beginning of the end of America as we know it.

    obama 08…for the kids!

  24. dukesman2000

I hope its Biden. Biden is a no non-sense no holds barred kind of guy. And he is not scripted, very intelligent and has tons of experience. Obama is running a soft campaign right now. He thinks he is immune to all of these McCain attacks he better thinks again. Hopefully, Biden can knock some sense into his head to toughen up and fight back.

  25. Meriam

Considering that “debate” – I don’t know, but I don’t think it’s a pastor’s place to moderate something like that. Come on, whatever happened to separation of church and state? Why couldn’t the moderator have been a representative of the muslim or jewish community?

  26. tourq

I wonder who his vp will be. Anyways, OBAMA 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. judsagoat

i hope you win to; but lets pull back on the predictions barack. for history sakes a black president in my lifetime would be great me being in my 50′s. but BEWARE; about taking the helm all ready unless you know something “we” don’t as you know the real powers to be stole two elections from gore and kerry. gore via the skull and bones and the high up people in the supreme court. but just look at what is heaed your way besides all them swftboats. the republican leader of the house [boehener] has thrown down the gaunlet. of his talk about shutting down the gov’t this is the interference you will have to face if elected. the republicans are going to UNDERMINE YOUR TIME IN OFFICE. THIS MAN LOOKS LIKE THE POSTER CHIOLD FOR THE KLU KLUX KLAN. and the rest of them southern gov’t people who gave bush a free pass to do as he pleased. some of you democrats did to. a republican has never gave a damn about nobody but their own kind. trust me. keep them eyes open and your word short that they won’t come back to haunt you.
