ROUNDUP: RACISM STALLS GLOVER FILM / THE SAARTJIE PROJECT / HIP-HOP’S BIGGEST EARNERS

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Danny Glover says the reason his film about Haitian independence hero Toussaint Louverture never got off the ground is because of Hollywood’s racism.

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez gave $18 million to finance half the project and the rest was supposed to come from a distributor, but no one in Hollywood was interested.

Glover told a Paris film seminar, “Producers said, ‘It’s a nice project, a great project … where are the white heroes?’

Glover added:

“I couldn’t get the money here. I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody . . . The first question you get is, ‘Is it a black film?’ All of them agree, ‘It’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.’ Somebody has to prove that to be a lie.”

THE SAARTJIE PROJECT

In the D.C. area and looking for something to do this weekend?

Check out The Saartjie Project, an amazing event inspired by the story of Saartjie Baartman and the politics of the black female body.

Performances will be held at the DC Arts Center on August 22nd and 23rd and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.

Due to the mature content, a parental advisory exists. A portion of the proceeds will go to HIPS, a community-based organization in Washington, D.C.

….When are the black actors and actresses
….going to realize it’s gonna take a couple of OUR OWN millionaires/billionaires to
….come together and start their own production companies and studios?
….Set the ego’s aside and put ya cash up cuz nothing will change until we start
….helping each other out! I’ll never understand why Oprah, Tyler Perry, Bill Cosby
;…and maybe one of those rappers listed above can’t come together and make it
….happen! We remain “crabs in the barrel”…

….I don’t think it’s as much about a crab in the barrell mentality as it is those famous
….people have their own agenda and would want everything their own way.
….Ever heard the phrase “Too Many Chiefs and not enough Indians?”
….If you try putting all those rich, powerful people in one room, someone would have
….to drop their ego for the greater good. I don’t see too many stars doing that.
….Not to mention, famous people love accodales and hate to share the spotlight.
….I doubt there would be a willingness to share that kind of spotlight. That’s why
….Oprah funded her school by herself. Do you really think she would want somoene
…..else dictating the use of her money?

please stop saying what has people done to help the community. You are not them so you do not know what they do. The Danny Glover movie issue is really sad and I think should have been a seperate post because most of the comments on here are about the Cash Kings. That deserves a lot of attention because it shows all the underhanded racisms that goes on in our world that we don’t see. America the beautiful. tsk tsk tsk

Hello and Goodnite

The amount of money being made here is incredible, Danny Golver movie could be made, jsut make it on a different budget it is not a story that is going to generate much money in the cineplex, so it is best to just film a great movie with a modest budget or get Chavez to give up some more of that Oil money, but do people realize that the money Chavez is giving for this project is being taken directly from more people of the African Diaspora, the top 10 guys should put 10 million together and firm their own studio, like Our Films with Bob johnson and Tracee Edmunds but actually make movies that people want to see, Judd Apatow and his ilk, make movies for aroung 20-30 million yet reap in 100’s of millions in the box office and even if they did half that, it still would be great, check out http://www.BoxOfficeMojo.com and see how much a movie made and how much it was amde for. Yeah, and the Domincans are enforcing the oppression. I know the Dominicans don’t like to hear me say this but it is the fact. The dominicans treat the Haitians the same way the US treats the mexicans.

I really want to see Danny Glover’s film made….the reason the world is reluctant to make it is because Haiti are the only black nation to TAKE their independence…rather than be given it by those who colonised them…I agree these rappers are makign unprecendeted amounts of money…pool it together to make a film that will enlighten and educate people…..+ it will make them money…

Oh boy I feel Danny is feeding everyone some BS. He is not getting financing because the other half is coming from Hugo Chavez and no one is trying to touch anything involving someone who is in bed with Iran and is about as anti-american in his comments as you can get who also has ties to Fidel Castro who by the way Glover is buddy -buddy with as well. Everyone knows hollywood is all about reps is gonna put themselves into anything that would have anything to do with someone who can be considered communist or anti-american no matter how much they respect Glover.

He knows this and should not be playing this card so loosely

What do you mean am I really black? I have to be black to agree with you? I don’t go through my life blaming everything bad on whites/jews. I had more issues with blacks in my community than with latinos,whites,etc.. Non whites need to step up and take responsibility sometimes. Don’t blame others. Yes racism exist… I am not denying that. Blacks degrade each other more than whites/jews degrade us. Throwing around the different variations of the n word, diamonds, etc. Shit… look at rap now. All about flaunting and dancing. I use to get laughed at in school by other blacks because they thought I was acting “white”. I spoke properly and did my work. Shit pisses me off. Blacks need to follow in the footsteps of Latinos. Go to any ghetto and you will see Latinos owning blocks. They know how to work together. I am not saying lets work together and not involve other races. We enjoy living above are means and obsess with material things. Look at Damon Dash, Michael Vick and the countless other black celebs. If I see another little kid walking down the street with a gold grill I am going to lose it.

People always ask me, “What are you?”. I say “human”. I am human before I am American… before I am african american… before I am arkansas chereokee…

We all are human and bleed the same blood. Time to work together as one.

Toussaint Louverture played a key role in what was the first successful attempt by a slave population in the Americas to throw off the yoke of Western colonialism. He defeated armies of three imperial powers: Spain, France, and Great Britain. The success of the Haitian Revolution had enduring effects on shaking the institution of slavery throughout the New World. Haiti became the second independent republic in the Western Hemisphere.

After being captured by the French general Leclerc, on the ship to France, Toussaint Louverture warned his captors that the rebels would not make his mistake in the following words: “[B]y overthrowing me you have killed only the trunk of the tree of liberty of the black people, it will grow back by the roots cause they are deep and numerous.”

I want DG’s movie to be made. If this movie gets made hopefully in another 2 or 3 years, my nephew who is just a baby now, will get to see it in the future. I want him to see a movie like this and appreciate who he is and his people. We need movies like this to educate our children and future generations to come. There are so many movies today that are being made and have no point or value to them.
Im not suprised by hollysh*t though. Most of the people working there are closeted homosexuals,anti-christs, whores and racists.
I would be more than happy to go see Danny G. movie. I say, he needs to do whatever he needs to do to get this movie filmed. Stop waiting on the gay white men to help you and just do what you have to do. Make the sh*t work dammit.

Skeeky are you serious? Blacks follow in the footsteps of Latinos? Ha, that’s a good one….lol. Black people have too many issues to come together, they don’t even like themselves so how you do expect them to like you? At least the latinos find themselves attractive and love to celebrate their culture. Blacks are FAR from this, and that’s the flat out truth! But with that being said, the racism from whites, cut much deeper. I think this is what Judah was getting at. Since they own everything(due to stolen money from africa, haiti, etc) Blacks will ALWAYS just be the puppets at the end of the white man’s string. So their efforts to keep the black man down financially, educationally, and spiritually is far more damaging than an insult from some sista!

I don’t know how many lists Forbes does, but that Vitamin Water Deal was 07, but they still count it. I put 50 at $50 million. Jay is really the number one because he signed a deal with LiveNation for $150 million dollars. None of them compare to Tyler Perry who pulled in $125 million this year and is being touted at the next black billionaire. Glad to see Black people making money and owning business, it was a long road and we deserve all the success we get. I don’t think racism is the reason that the Danny Glover movie is not getting made, I think Hollywood doesn’t believe it will make any money and it probably won’t. He should try to make the movie for less or keep trying to get funding independently

@15 & 32, BOTH OF YOU sound like complete IDIOTS! Please read a book and learn your history! Yes, I said “your” regardless of what culture or race you claim to be!!

Gil Scott Heron said it best :”THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED” ….because “they” don’t want for ignorant people (who feel like it’s to much use of brain cells to actually take the time to learn the facts) to know what occurred.
I’ll enlighten those who are open to learn:
Haiti became a French colony in 1697. Nearly 100 years later, the BLACK SLAVE population started a revolution, leading a war with France. Hmm…wonder where they originated from…could it have been— AFRICA (a little sarc. for those dummies who believe otherwise) Haitian forces defeated the French soldiers sent by Napoleon in 1803, the same year France sold the Louisiana territory to the U.S. and all but gave up its colonial ambitions in the New World.

**France recognizes Haitian independence in exchange for a financial indemnity of 150 million francs. NEWS FLASH:::::Most nations including the United States shunned Haiti for almost forty years, fearful that its example could stir unrest there and in other slaveholding countries.** HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES! Over the next few decades Haiti is forced to take out loans of 70 million francs to repay the indemnity and gain international recognition.

In 1804 Haiti became the first independent black-led republic in the modern world, and only the second independent state in the Americas. As it developed into a nation, it faced civil wars, political assassinations, territorial divisions and tyranny.

It was not until 1862 that the United States finally grants Haiti diplomatic recognition sending Frederick Douglass as its Consular Minister. Please WAKE UP & know that had it not been for HAITI’’s determination and liberation, WE (Black People) probably wouldn’t be who we and where we are today.

With or with out this movie, Haiti’s story will continued to be told through it’s rich culture and pride in being the FIRST black country to have fought and won their freedom from their oppressors! ***

Quit whining about “the white-man” and racism. What about “intra-racial classcism.” I had an uncle who made millinons. Worked my brother and I to death, when we were kids. All he he ever did was take us to Burger King. All I wanted from him was the knowledge, bastard wasn’t giving up shit.
I say this to say, with all the black entrepreneurs, he can’t find the financing anywhere. The game any Hollywood is what it is. Ya think he’ll get a dime now. Quit whining, black folks. People like Jesse and Al Sharpton depend on us feeling hopeless, so they can “lead” us to nowhere. Get your own shit.

Danny Glover failed to mention the fact that Hugo Chavez pledged to use the money he gets from Citgo, yes buying gas there pays him, to DESTROY America! It’s already bad enough that our government partakes in commerce with the likes of a person who would say such a thing, so maybe Hollywood did a good thing on this one… the white hero thing was the wrong way to go about it but, God will use those with ill will against themselves to complete his plans and they won’t even know it.
