ROUNDUP: RACISM STALLS GLOVER FILM / THE SAARTJIE PROJECT / HIP-HOP’S BIGGEST EARNERS
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Danny Glover says the reason his film about Haitian independence hero Toussaint Louverture never got off the ground is because of Hollywood’s racism.
Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez gave $18 million to finance half the project and the rest was supposed to come from a distributor, but no one in Hollywood was interested.
Glover told a Paris film seminar, “Producers said, ‘It’s a nice project, a great project … where are the white heroes?’”
Glover added:
“I couldn’t get the money here. I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody . . . The first question you get is, ‘Is it a black film?’ All of them agree, ‘It’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.’ Somebody has to prove that to be a lie.”
THE SAARTJIE PROJECT
In the D.C. area and looking for something to do this weekend?
Check out The Saartjie Project, an amazing event inspired by the story of Saartjie Baartman and the politics of the black female body.
Performances will be held at the DC Arts Center on August 22nd and 23rd and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.
Due to the mature content, a parental advisory exists. A portion of the proceeds will go to HIPS, a community-based organization in Washington, D.C.
HIP-HOP’S BIGGEST EARNERS

It’s been a big year for hip-hop, and the biggest names in the game have made a lot of money. Forbes recently compiled a list of hip-hop’s cash kings, the twenty top-earning individuals with 50 Cent topping the list with $150 million. Jay-Z and Diddy claimed a spot in the top three with $82 and $35 million, respectively.

4. Kanye West $30 million
5. Timbaland $22 million

Jay signed a 10-year, $150 million deal with concert promoter Live Nation which means his $150 mil should be made over that time so yes his Live Nation is included.
The late great Tupac made the list as well! I believe with $15mil in royalities..I found out I was his sister just hours ago…lol…

NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT HERO’S OR LEADERS
THAT AFFECTED ANYTHING OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
AMERICA TEND TO TREAT THE PEOPLE FROM HAITI
LIKE THEY ARE NOTHING, YET THEY MAKE MONEY OFF OF ARTIST LIKE WYCLEF
AMERICA IS ABOUT A COLLECTION OF PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD
AND PEOPLE BRING THEIR CULTURES, VALUES AND TRADITIONS INTO THIS COUNTRY
WE SHOULD AGREE TO DISAGREE BUT YET TREAT PEOPLE AS EQUALS
AND RESPECT THEIR CULTURES AND HOW THEY HAVE INFLUENCED HISTORY IN GENERAL (NO MATTER WHERE YOU COME FROM)
I LOVE AMERICA BUT I WAS BORN IN HAITI
YES SOME PEOPLE THERE ARE POOR THAT DOESNT STOP THEM FROM BEING IMPORTANT NOR DOES IT STOP THE COUNTRY FROM ITS BEAUTY AND VALUE

People, comment on this Saartjie Project. I’ve read and learnt so much about Sarah Baartman’s plight ever since J. Dakar posted about her, earlier this year!!! The sad thing is the black female body is being objectified not just by men alone, but look how WILLINGLY and FREELY young black women expose their bodies. Go to Myspace, Facebook or any other social networking sites, and you’ll see COUNTLESS numbers of black girls taking self-photos, with their asses showing out in front or in as little clothes as possible. Sisters, we MUST STOP perpetuating the stereotype which men (black and white) have used to degrade us. We can’t blame rappers for this shit, of these video vixens do it by choice, which is a motherfuckin shame! And furthermore, peep Youtube and the COUNTLESS numbers of black girls uploading booty poppin viideos and shit. That shit is not cute and no one will ever respect you, since you’re broadcastnig your ignorance to potentially millions worldwide.
We wanna be called queens, but that crown doesnt belong on the heads of black women who dont respect themselves.

….Between all of those money makers, they earned almost a half a billion dollars
….collectively. That says a lot about the money making capability of these Black.
….men.
….Now riddle me this Batman. With nearly $500 million in earning power,
…..what substantive effort has any of them made to help promote positive change in
…..the Black community as a whole? I mean WTF has any of them done to help
….their community besides selling jeans, sneakers, downloads, etc?
….Please, someone tell me.
…..Danny G, keep your head to the sky. It’s been a well known fact that neither the
…..European or American nations want the story of the Hatian people told because
…..they were complicit in the barbaric destruction of that nation and its people.
…..You might just have to look somewhere other than Hollywood for that. Maybe
…..you can ask Jay, 50 and the rest of them to help you finance the first ever
…..major motion picture all Black studio.
…..I’ll be checking out that Saartjie joint this weeknd. Thanks for sharing CL!

Go 50! Congratulations on adding $150 mil to your income in 12 months that is more then awesome! 50 doesn’t do anything? He must be doing something buying brands and talking about buying malls and sealing deals for platinum in So Africa w Motsepe yeah I would say he is doing something and doing it rather well! Diversify!!
Jay signed a 10-year, $150 million deal with concert promoter Live Nation which means his $150 mil should be made over that time he didn’t get fronted $150mil so yes his fortune is inclusive of the Live Nation deal.

1. Funny how we are more concerned with hip-hop artists pocketing dirty money than we are about the fact that those artists seeking to uplift the race (see Danny Glover story above — read it this time! lol) can’t even get a break. DG will never make that list because we’re too busy funneling money to the pimps of our generation to realize that we’re the ones being taken to the bank!
2. As for that list, looking at that much money made me sick. Not because I’m jealous or wish I had it. But rather because….
(a) How much of that money do you think is actually returned to or invested in the black community. My dad always used to tell me, when whites and Asians earn money, it turns over in their communities at least four or five times. What does that mean? It means when a white man earns money, he goes and spends it in an establishment owned by another white man. That second man goes and takes a trip and supports another white man’s business. He, in turn, does the same. Every $1 makes its way through the hands of several white men, and they have more than the latest sneakers, CDs, and pimped out rides to show for it. No, they OWN their houses, establish trust funds for their kids, have several $10Ks and $100Ks as a rainy day fund so they don’t have to live from paycheck to paycheck, etc. They support their own, and they all are better off for it.
What do you think has happened to the money that most of them made on that list? How many black hands did it pass through? How were the ‘hood and the ‘block that these guys represent so hard….how was that made better because these dudes so-called “made it.”
Add up the money on that list (and then even allow for net earnings which will be less) and tell me what we as a community could be doing better if we could devote even a portion of those resources to long-term plans that will do more than teach our young kids how to trick, thug, bang, and grime!!!!

Pertaining to Glover’s film constructive black films never get support from Hollywood or black movie goers for that matter. But let it be a movie about black people, shuckin and jiving, cooning and bafooning, it’ll be a hit. Why? Because that is what Hollywood wants to see; they want to see black people falling into the stereotypes of self destructive race. They don’t want to be reminded of how close minded, racist and fucked up they really are. What they don’t know is that by them not supporting the positive so called black films speaks volume of how fucked up and racist they really are. So by running away from it, they in part, run into it. “Malcolm X” did not win an Oscar but “Babe,” the movie about a fucking talking pig did. Now you tell me…..

is racisim new? No it isn’t new and I have to agree entertainment is about money before education so why is anyone suprised? Add “no white heroes” and that equals no funding! It doesn’t make it right but that is the reality…. talk is talk…. doing something about it is much better…. if people want to help get his project off the ground and are catching feelings start a fund raise money in your own communities start with the Haitian community.. why leave it up to others celebs just because they have money ask yourself what are you doing for your community before you start pointing fingers?
Why even be suprised at the few comments about it? Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to post it with the Forbes list those two projects are important and may have served best as separate posts….

@#21 & 24:
I agree wholeheartedly. Danny shouldn`t be surprised. Toussaint Louverture was a “revolutionary” who fought for independence for his country and kicked Napoleon`s ass and drove the British out. Toussaint was a freedom fighter and a true hero. The white producers/distributors in Hollywood dare not touch such a story. Like, the story of, Patrice Lumumba of the Congo it`s not their style. You have two revolutionaries fighting for freedom for their people in rejection of imperialism.
Hollywood just isn`t interested. Also, piggy backing off of #24`s comment, if it was a movie surrounding the normal stereotype of us acting a damn fool and shakin` ass it would have no problem being funded..REAL TALK..
The Saartjie Project does sound very interesting. Seems to be something very intellectual and that`s what we need. There`s too much dumbing down of us to even speak off. Consciousness and Intellect is what we need more of.

@ dukesman2000 I completely agree. What appalls me is the fact that the producers know its going to be a great project yet still question where all the white heros are. After all these decades centuries even, and white people still think that for some reason they are supreme. That just shows they’re level of ignorance.
Who cares what those rappers are making? All they’re going to do is capitalize off of the black community with their over priced clothing, liquors, energy drinks all the while promoting their shallow destructive music (that they claim is the reflection of us) whatever!, save for a handfull of them, and even those end up selling their souls for the Almighty Dollar at the expense of their people.

I am in totally agreement with all your comments, there are a couple of books that y’all should check
1. Making Whiteness by Elizabeth Grace Hale
2. The Black Image in the White Mind by Andrew Roljecki
3.Coon, Mammies, Bucks, and Mulattos by Donald Rogal
If you read all these books together and then watch televsion or listen to the radio or another media outlet then you will see exactly why Black people are portrayed the way they are. Although many black people have the illusion in their mind that we have arrived we still have so very far to go. Some of your favorite entertainers who we view as being powerful are still being controlled.

That list is what they grossed in the last year alone, not total liquid assets or net worth. I doubt that 50 is WORTH more than Jay and Diddy. More so, the reason why you may see people up their who haven’t done things in a minute are because of royalties, residuals, and record points. Also, ringtones are a lucrative industry these days. Its all based upon their contracts.
Just cause they don’t have a record doesn’t mean they aren’t getting paid…there are a number of ways to get paid in the entertainment industry.

people keep asking why these rappers aren’t funding Danny G’s project. the reason why is these rappers don’t actually keep all this money…they have to pay a shit load of taxes, they have to pay their record labels back, they have to use this money to keep their careers alive! if they were to try to help with the funding…they would reprimanded by the white folks who really control their money.
i agree with some of you that said even if DG’s movie was made, black people wouldn’t even pay to see it. I don’t think he is aiming to make it a blockbuster, but he just wants to put something out there to make it aware to people that this man existed and he did great things. It is a shame he can’t even do that.

The movie would be a great tool for children to understand the complexity of Haitain/African history in the new world. But, in reality Hollywood is right. White America has a fixed mentality when it comes to blacks, and many donot want to sit through 45 minutes of what their race did to the Haitian nation. I’ve studied it, and Haiti is a travesty, past and present, and if anyone knows the history of Haiti, than you know that America and Europe are to blame for what Haiti is now. People don’t want to be reminded of what they done, so they won’t see it. And also, as long as some whites and other races continue to believe that blacks were to lazy to fight for liberation, it’s all good, but the minute reality hit them witht the fact that blacks just didn’t lay down and accept oppression, it’s a hard pill to swallow. There are so many great stories about black people that will never be told because than black people and others will realize that we are more.
And as far as having black stars support this project, well who knows. Glover should ask Master P.

——-That list of rappers should be titled the “Top 20 Satanists in Hip-Hop”. These
——-rappers, especially the one’s near the top, are netting so much money ON THE
——-CONDITION that they will not attempt to flip those funds into anything productive
——-in their own communities. Those guys are flying on auto-pilot. The white man
——-tells them to just keep doing what they’re doing: being hom*sexuals, promoting
——-gang culture, murder, robbery, and drug dealing, and he will repay them by
——-making them “stars” and creating major deals and business ventures for them.
——-For a Jay-Z to open a chain of clubs or a 50 Cent to reap millions on Vitamin
——-Water, they must first bend over, and then agree to promote stupidity and lead
——-their own people into destruction. I saw Jay-Z in the newspaper about 1 week
——-ago standing next to Mike Bloomberg (the billionaire mayor of New York) in
——-some joint venture or operation. The man, Jay-Z, had the stupidest look on his
——-face. Now Ludacris wants to “Go Green”, lol. These cats get trotted out like
——-poodles at the Westminister Dog Show whenever the white man needs them to
——-get negroes involved in one of his ploys.
——-The Danny Glover story is important because it shows that “businesses”,
——-”money”, and “fame” has nothing to do with the plight of black people. Nothing.
——-The people at the top, who control and print the money, have to give these rich
——-negroes the say so on EVERYTHING they do. Everything. Every so-called “rich”
——-and “affluent” black person that you see, that negroes think are “doin’ it”, have
——-sold their souls. Only broke black people, or broke-hearted, think that money
——-will solve a divine issue. It’s not just the money that Danny Glover needs, he
——-must go to the white jews because they possess all the mainstream
——-distributorships. Mind you, Hollywood will never put out a movie depicting
——-blacks, particularly black men, in any form of strength or militancy because of
——-the power in the silver screen. It is mind control. “Malcolm X” also had to be
——-privately funded. I gurantee that if Danny Glover had a script for “Booty Call 7″
——-he would get the greenlight, a script, funding, and a 25 year old white jewish
——-director to helm it.

For years, big white runned magazines didn’t show enough black models. And then poof, out of nowhere, some white lady got interested and they decided to feature black models for vogue Italia…and that shit sold through the roof.
The same can be done about Black movies…but instead of the massah giving us a chance, can’t we all just contribute?
And Danny Glover can do this movie without the major sound effects and shit. Independent movie work just as well too! AND Why does Danny need to turn to the white man to make his shit work. Can’t he just turn to the community he wants to portray?

I agree with some of the comments about DG but big movie studios are in the business of making money, they want huge returns for their investments. I thinke DG can still make the movie he just need to go Independent show it at Cannes and Sundance create a hype or buzz have a big name player (Will Smith i.e) associated with either infront or behind the scene. Talk to Salma Hayek she pushed for the movie Frida to be made because it was her passion. Talk to Halle she pushed for the Dorothy Danridge stroy to be told. He already has half the backing he can do anything he wants to as long as he is dedicated to it. He’s been in the business long enough to know hollywood is still racist!

——–From what I understand, he has “big name” blacks aligned with the script

Thanks Dakar, I plan on attending on Friday. I just sent a broadcast to others, we need to promote cultural events more often and this is a story that I remember learning about during my AA study days at SU.
My question or comment is that the same issue of parading black women around for their cultural body differences appears to be done now by black men in the hip hop industry and women themselves, its funny how people cannot sing without showing more then just their vocal talentor having black women on display in a video. Just a coment.
Again thanks Dakar.

People can say what they want about Castro and Chavez, but they seem to be down for the cause of Black people. Castro allowed for the Black Caucas to send black students to Cuba to go to medical school. And Castro has sent gasoline to cheap inner cities, and he’s funding a movie about a black hero. Something doesn’t seem right about this, are these two men really the devil?

I, myself, only have a lot of LUV for Hugo Chavez. We are at a crossroads in history. Truth is truth and it is what it is. Chavez refuses to bow to American Imperialism and I applaud him and all freedom fighters throughout the world. Yes it`s politics as well as racism and neither is justified when it comes to the oppressed. Soon we, all, will have to choose sides because the signs are upon us. The oppressed always have a breaking point.

Hollywood may be primarily Democratic and disagree with Pres Boosh, but there comes a time and place where everyone has to draw the line. Many people in the position to do something refuse to because they refuse to sign on to a project that will boost his already over inflated ego. His people are wrapped up in his Trojan Horse full of gifts that they do not recognize that their democracy is slowly being demolished into a dictatorship. Checks and balances are slowly dissolving in their government and are slowly being replaced by Chavez’s military, which will soon leave the people of his country powerless to do or say anything that opposes his golden rule.

Hello and Goodnite
The amount of money being made here is incredible, Danny Golver movie could be made, jsut make it on a different budget it is not a story that is going to generate much money in the cineplex, so it is best to just film a great movie with a modest budget or get Chavez to give up some more of that Oil money, but do people realize that the money Chavez is giving for this project is being taken directly from more people of the African Diaspora, the top 10 guys should put 10 million together and firm their own studio, like Our Films with Bob johnson and Tracee Edmunds but actually make movies that people want to see, Judd Apatow and his ilk, make movies for aroung 20-30 million yet reap in 100’s of millions in the box office and even if they did half that, it still would be great, check out http://www.BoxOfficeMojo.com and see how much a movie made and how much it was amde for. He is not getting financing because the other half is coming from Hugo Chavez and no one is trying to touch anything involving someone who is in bed with Iran and is about as anti-american in his comments as you can get who also has ties to Fidel Castro who by the way Glover is buddy -buddy with as well. Everyone knows hollywood is all about reps is gonna put themselves into anything that would have anything to do with someone who can be considered communist or anti-american no matter how much they respect Glover.

What do you mean am I really black? I have to be black to agree with you? I don’t go through my life blaming everything bad on whites/jews. I had more issues with blacks in my community than with latinos,whites,etc.. Non whites need to step up and take responsibility sometimes. Don’t blame others. Yes racism exist… I am not denying that. Blacks degrade each other more than whites/jews degrade us. Throwing around the different variations of the n word, diamonds, etc. Shit… look at rap now. All about flaunting and dancing. I use to get laughed at in school by other blacks because they thought I was acting “white”. I spoke properly and did my work. Shit pisses me off. Blacks need to follow in the footsteps of Latinos. Go to any ghetto and you will see Latinos owning blocks. They know how to work together. I am not saying lets work together and not involve other races. We enjoy living above are means and obsess with material things. Look at Damon Dash, Michael Vick and the countless other black celebs. If I see another little kid walking down the street with a gold grill I am going to lose it.
People always ask me, “What are you?”. I say “human”. I am human before I am American… before I am african american… before I am arkansas chereokee…
We all are human and bleed the same blood. Time to work together as one.

Toussaint Louverture played a key role in what was the first successful attempt by a slave population in the Americas to throw off the yoke of Western colonialism. He defeated armies of three imperial powers: Spain, France, and Great Britain. The success of the Haitian Revolution had enduring effects on shaking the institution of slavery throughout the New World. Haiti became the second independent republic in the Western Hemisphere.
After being captured by the French general Leclerc, on the ship to France, Toussaint Louverture warned his captors that the rebels would not make his mistake in the following words: “[B]y overthrowing me you have killed only the trunk of the tree of liberty of the black people, it will grow back by the roots cause they are deep and numerous.”

I want DG’s movie to be made. If this movie gets made hopefully in another 2 or 3 years, my nephew who is just a baby now, will get to see it in the future. I want him to see a movie like this and appreciate who he is and his people. We need movies like this to educate our children and future generations to come. There are so many movies today that are being made and have no point or value to them.
Im not suprised by hollysh*t though. Most of the people working there are closeted homosexuals,anti-christs, whores and racists.
I would be more than happy to go see Danny G. movie. I say, he needs to do whatever he needs to do to get this movie filmed. Stop waiting on the gay white men to help you and just do what you have to do. Make the sh*t work dammit.

Skeeky are you serious? Blacks follow in the footsteps of Latinos? Ha, that’s a good one….lol. Black people have too many issues to come together, they don’t even like themselves so how you do expect them to like you? At least the latinos find themselves attractive and love to celebrate their culture. Blacks are FAR from this, and that’s the flat out truth! But with that being said, the racism from whites, cut much deeper. I think this is what Judah was getting at. Since they own everything(due to stolen money from africa, haiti, etc) Blacks will ALWAYS just be the puppets at the end of the white man’s string. So their efforts to keep the black man down financially, educationally, and spiritually is far more damaging than an insult from some sista!

Jay is really the number one because he signed a deal with LiveNation for $150 million dollars. None of them compare to Tyler Perry who pulled in $125 million this year and is being touted at the next black billionaire. Glad to see Black people making money and owning business, it was a long road and we deserve all the success we get. I don’t think racism is the reason that the Danny Glover movie is not getting made, I think Hollywood doesn’t believe it will make any money and it probably won’t. He should try to make the movie for less or keep trying to get funding independently

@15 & 32, BOTH OF YOU sound like complete IDIOTS! Please read a book and learn your history! Yes, I said “your” regardless of what culture or race you claim to be!!
Gil Scott Heron said it best :”THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED” ….because “they” don’t want for ignorant people (who feel like it’s to much use of brain cells to actually take the time to learn the facts) to know what occurred.
I’ll enlighten those who are open to learn:
Haiti became a French colony in 1697. Nearly 100 years later, the BLACK SLAVE population started a revolution, leading a war with France. Hmm…wonder where they originated from…could it have been— AFRICA (a little sarc. for those dummies who believe otherwise) Haitian forces defeated the French soldiers sent by Napoleon in 1803, the same year France sold the Louisiana territory to the U.S. and all but gave up its colonial ambitions in the New World.
**France recognizes Haitian independence in exchange for a financial indemnity of 150 million francs. NEWS FLASH:::::Most nations including the United States shunned Haiti for almost forty years, fearful that its example could stir unrest there and in other slaveholding countries.** HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES! Over the next few decades Haiti is forced to take out loans of 70 million francs to repay the indemnity and gain international recognition.
In 1804 Haiti became the first independent black-led republic in the modern world, and only the second independent state in the Americas. As it developed into a nation, it faced civil wars, political assassinations, territorial divisions and tyranny.
It was not until 1862 that the United States finally grants Haiti diplomatic recognition sending Frederick Douglass as its Consular Minister. Please WAKE UP & know that had it not been for HAITI’’s determination and liberation, WE (Black People) probably wouldn’t be who we and where we are today.
With or with out this movie, Haiti’s story will continued to be told through it’s rich culture and pride in being the FIRST black country to have fought and won their freedom from their oppressors! ***
