VIDEO: MUSIQ SOULCHILD - “RADIO”
Thursday, August 14, 2008
Musiq Soulchild premiered his new video, “Radio” on BET’s Access Granted. This is definitely a different sound for Musiq. I wasn’t digging it at first, but it has definitely grown on me since hearing it on the radio.
Musiq’s 5th album, On My Radio will be released in November.

I don’t like this. Musiq Soulchild is a SOUL artist. This is his attempt to go mainstream. I understand that soul music doesn’t pay like mainstream music, but c’mon…..

As a Musiq fan I feel very weird about this. I actually heard this song on the radio a couple of times and had no idea it was him. The song is cool (song and vid reminds me of The Dream) and the atl influence is heavy. Just think I’m used to my soulchild. Guess at the end of the day you gotta do what you gotta do to feed your family.

Interesting…This song is fire. I saw the making earlier on Access Granted and first thought wow, he sold out. As much as some of his fans are going to be upset and even feel betrayed, Musiq is a true artist. This exemplifies his versatlity. He can do classic Neo Soul songs and then all of a sudden make a hot club banger.
This song will be all over the radios in a couple of weeks. I like the fact that it has elements of that down South music. They always make hot club bangers.
The song is about how he’s not confined to just one genre of music, listen to his radio and you’ll see (creative). The video is hot, he looks fly and I like the concept.

ANYWAY!! 4get the HATEERSZZ!!
Musiq keep doing your thing I’m glad you did a song a lil different than usual not being afraid to change your sound a little. I’m just happy you didn’t have T-pain or Lil wayne rapping up in there…you still kept it r&b even with the club beat in there. Pretty nice video.
Isn’t the girl in the video a choreographer?? and did videos with Beenie Man and Sean Paul “I’m still in love” video?

Honestly ain’t nothing wrong with this song and ya’ll know that he still stays within his element with his clothes and his writing in this song. There’s no cursing there’s no talk of strippers or drugs or any of that nature. It just has a hott ass beat. I know we aren’t use to him doing things like this but alot of the beat boxing that was in his first cd was him. He’s creative in a sense that he can what he wants and still make a hit.

I’m deeply concerned about his career now, where the hell is his management & who told him this shit was good? , this is so 2 years ago.
Whoa…….what was Musiq thinking????
I’m a HUGE fan but this corny mainstream pop shit is really WACK.
Stay in your lane Musiq, you were hitting it good before, don’t try to follow the norm.

I though I was the only one thinking this…
I don’t follow Musiq that much but I respect him as a great neo-soul artist, but this song and video (though I kinda like it) seems like he’s selling out!!! I kinda makes me uneasy about the song.

What I see is that the lyrics are not much different from any other song he would sing!
I think he should broaden his fanbase and with this song that’s what he’s doin.
A lot of people probably think he’s boring.
HOWEVER, I really don’t want a whole album of this!
I could see more of a mainstream R&B like Brandy’s “Afrodisiac” but not all this fad “ATL” ish.
You can sing over a hip-hop influenced beat without it sounding like some tired ass-shaking music. He’s done it before!!!

I’ve been a Musiq fan from day one and I can dig this. It’s not his absolute best but he won’t be able to please everyone anyway. If he came with a slow jam people would be like “oh, that again.” It’s like people don’t expect artists to be creative. But that’s why they’re artists. Because they’re creative!!. lol At least he tried something different and went in a direction that was halfway decent.

Neo Soul is dead people!!!
he is just trying something different, hopefully Jill Scott and Eryah Badu get the memo cuz that monotonous philly sound is played out and ain’t sellin’ …
I applaud him for tryin something new and switching it up cuz i got all of his CD’s and they were starting to sound the same and have the same formula.
he did it, and doesn’t come off corny or forced…well done.
lets not forget this dude is still very much YOUNG, i can’t stess that enough….he is still YOUNG and the this is going to be his 5th CD he don’t wanna be singing all that slow, ho hum-incense burning and candles music…

I knew after the success of “BUDDY” he was going to pander to the crazy ghetto folk who appreciated that fu*k buddy, friends with benefits trash he sang about. The song was a sellout song, in my opinion. I liked it but I definitely saw the direction was mainstream and I kinda knew this would happen. I heard it on the radio, though. Also to #34, I respect versatility when its done RIGHT. This song is something different from Musiq and I respect him for that aspect BUT that aspect alone. Just because you do something different doesn’t make it right. That song is WACK. Seriously… I hate music front the south but even other songs I’ve loathed sounded better than that. Its straight up BS (even down to the lyrics) and why should I go against my standards and “appreciate” garbage instead of the effort. That’s why you should be telling ppl to appreciate: THE EFFORT. Also DO NOT insult my genre. Rihanna (sp?) is NOT rock. Cut the bullshit right there. If you actually listen to rock or ANY alternrock music… you would know NOT to say something so stupid.

I don’t know about this one. It’s gonna have to grow on me. This is not the classic Musiq Soulchild that I love! The song is almost kind of annoying, it sounds nothing like him cuz he’s barely singing on it! Its almost like hes talking. Musiq is known for that classic soul and saving R&B. Buddy was my shit as well as For tha night, Half-crazy, Love…..i could go on & on….like I said, this is gonna have to grow on me. I felt the same way about Usher’s In the Club..it had to grow on me & it did, but it still is not classic Usher to me, same with this.

I know Musiq is trying to express himself musically and not be “pigeon-holed” into one style, I get it. But point blank, this was not done well at all!
The beat is so 2006, I would almost call it “lame.” Even if he wanted to venture into the “dirty south” sound, he could have and should have done it WAY better than this.
I mean if he wanted to switch it up he would have faired much better going the ecelectic/electronic/pop/soul route. At least be creative.
The sad thing is he was one of the FEW SOUL artists left, this does nothing for him.
Again, I get it Musiq, but its poorly done.

I agree with the other posters about this ATL crunk style whatever was more popular in 2006 and is dated now. It reminds me when Monica ventured into the ATL style for “Everytime the beat drops”,it didnt work for her and it sure does not work for neo-soul star like Musiq

Although I love Musiq, and hate this song, I understand why he made it. We can scream all day that he sold out, but when even his fans are not supporting him to where he can put out what makes him MUSIQ, you have to expect what comes with that.
A man can only sing so many melodic, deep songs that aren’t paying the bills…. but you grooving to them stolen from the internet before he has to put out a banger that the D.J.’s are going to be forced to buy the wax and cd versions of for the club.
If you don’t support, you force people to go into survival mode. Sometimes that mode is not even remotely what you begin with.
So why complain. How often do you go to the club and see people slowdancing like back in the day before Luke came out with “drop them drawls”????
You know dadgum well more people are supporting garbage these days… why be surprised when someone like Musiq jumps on the Garbage Truck.

KELLZ #47. First thing first. Of course we know rihanna is not totally rock, dnt be an ass. What I was tryna imply is that she has a slight rock influence in her music. (shut up and drive/umbrella/breaking dishes) they are not ur typical RnB songs, thats what I meant. As for Musiq, im not saying everybody should love the song, because of course everyone is not going to love the song. But damn….as die hard fans as some of yall claim, yall should atleast give the dude probs for experimenting with his music. No I do not want anybody to lower their standards of music, it ain tthat serious. Anyway, my opinion is my opinion, Kudos to Musiq, Fuck the so call fans who hating because he dont want to sing that slow soul bullshit sounding alike on every album. I cant even name 3 songs from musiq because all sounds the damn same, so kudos for doing something different.

What needs to be understood is that this is MUSIQ SOULCHILD obviously wanted to play with his sound for a minute - not the label, he must want to express his versatility and try something a little different. Stop thinking that labels just tell artists what to do all the time, because it doesnt work like. The Musiq that everyone knows is definitely still here!!! He just wanted to try something different and if you were a real fan you would stop hatin and turn up your Radio. Geesh ppl, lets support one another as opposed to being angry and hateful. I dont like this type of music in the first place. lol. I dont get with “crunk” music, so typically, no i dont like it. Whether it’s Musiq or not. Musiq is, however, a Philly artist. Philly artists are generally recognized within their own people, however, still not looked as mean real artists.
Musiq’s trying to get a wider fanbase, and I respect him for that. Musiq, sweetheart, lets see what the rest of this new album sounds like. This song, regardless of WHO sings it/does it… is garbage. Love ya always tho, baby! Keep reppin philly.

MUSIQ IS BAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love his music (but i didn’t like his last cd) and seeing him switch it up alil bit and show another side of himself makes me even more of a fan. I love hearing this song when it rocks on my ra-di-o!!!!!!!
Plus he looking kinda cute in his video. I never really looked at him like that, but I’m feeling his new swagger (although he’s still too short for me) .
For those who don’t like his new sound just look at it like this: The person u are at work, in church, around ur parents, and with ur friends are slightly different. Musiq is a multi dimensional person like all of us and he just doin what he feel right now in his environment- the music industry. I mean I still hear the soulchild in him. He always had some hip hop influence/ beats in his songs so i don’t think he went to the left at all. I rather him do alil bit of this than a whole lot of retro/electronica music that everyone else is hopping on right now. Just my opinion… Welcome back Musiq-ur cd betta sound better than ur last joint FOR REAL

@ALL
Has anyone considered the title of the album as to the reason why he made this song? It took me a while to understand where he is going, but it makes sense. “On my radio” - he listens to different things, this is one style he likes, right? And I think there will be a “pop’ish, techno-like” song on there as well - sh*t why not, he may listen to Rhianna on the radio, right? He has paid his Neo-Soul dues LOL
To Musiq fans, I think that this album may be some of what the fans want mixed with some of what his personal tastes are, thats all. Also, being that his production team is self contained, I’m pretty sure they have wanted to do something different as well.
As for the song… It has a love hate thing going on I’m still torn/confused - but it is gaining some love from an audience he didn’t have, which is exactly what he wanted IMO

This is just TERRIBLE!!! Musiq, what are you doing? First Raheem starts going into the R.Kelly sound now Musiq is dang near leanin n’ rockin in his videos. All he needed was Dj Khaled screaming all over the song! I’m sorry but I cant get with this. I understand times are hard and music isnt selling like it use to yada yada yada but come on now. The beat was generic and stale, the concept was…meh, and he’s mumbling over the song instead of using his beautiful God given voice. Might as well have thrown in the vocoder(sp?). And all you people talking about how he’s expanding and growing as an artist and trying something new….NO thats bs. How are you growing and expanding as an artist when you’re doing the same “Dream/T-pain/Chris Brown ‘nem” watered down lame ass sound thats been saturating the radio for I dont know how long. There is nothing “new” about this sound. Growing as an artist means thinking OUTSIDE the box and doing something DIFFERENT (meaning something thats not been done over millions of times) not relying on the same old formula so you can appeal to 13 year old kids. Dang, cant the grown folks have our music too lol? AND FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, ALL MUSIC DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND THE CLUB!!! GOODNESS!!! Musiq, whatever floats your boat brother…I guess. Now go sell your ringtones.
PS: this is a prime example of why you you HAVE to support good artists when they’re making good music.

@74 & CLEEN
I agree, its not growth, and it is definately not different, you are totally correct there -
and, music does not evolve around the club, I wholeheartedly agree, but…
I personally look at this song as satire, as a slap in the face like “watch me do this bullsh*t, then all of a sudden everyone knows who I am, but when I was making real music they overlooked me calling me a corny artist” - that is a statement in itself.
Plus, Musiq goes to clubs like all of us, and like most musican’s, wants to rock out to his own sh*t, without having to perform it.
Was this the way to go? Don’t know, i’m still on the fence about it, but his album will be about what he likes, not what we like him to do. Only time will tell if it was the right thing to do
