VIDEO: MUSIQ SOULCHILD – “RADIO”

Musiq Soulchild premiered his new video, “Radio” on BET’s Access Granted. This is definitely a different sound for Musiq. I wasn’t digging it at first, but it has definitely grown on me since hearing it on the radio.

Musiq’s 5th album, On My Radio will be released in November.

holyy crap. i heard this on the radio but i had NO CLUE it was him. i never thought id hear musiq soulchild singin a song like this. i like it and everything but its just weird, ya know?

  3. Legend

What needs to be understood is that this is MUSIQ SOULCHILD obviously wanted to play with his sound for a minute – not the label, he must want to express his versatility and try something a little different. Stop thinking that labels just tell artists what to do all the time, because it doesnt work like. The Musiq that everyone knows is definitely still here!!! He just wanted to try something different and if you were a real fan you would stop hatin and turn up your Radio. Geesh ppl, lets support one another as opposed to being angry and hateful. Make sure yall get the album coming this fall!

  4. This song is wack. I don’t know what this is going to do for his career. I am so disappointed. Its good that’s he’s trying new things but he could have did an up-beat neo-soul song with more meaning and depth. Its just lame…..I won’t be buying his cd..

  5. Divine One

I LOVE THE VIDEO!!!! I LIKE THAT FACT THAT HE IS EXPANDING HIS MUSICAL HORIZONS TO TRY SOMETHING ELSE…NO ONE CAN PUT HIM OR HIS MUSICAL STYLE IN A BOX!!! AS AN ARTIST YOU HAVE TO DO DIFFERENT THINGS. I WELCOME THE CHANGE!!! CAN’T WAIT FOR THE CD TO DROP!!

WHATEVER I LIKE I PUT IT ON MY RADIO!!!!

I dont like this type of music in the first place. lol. I dont get with “crunk” music, so typically, no i dont like it. Whether it’s Musiq or not. Musiq is, however, a Philly artist. Philly artists are generally recognized within their own people, however, still not looked as mean real artists.

Musiq’s trying to get a wider fanbase, and I respect him for that. Musiq, sweetheart, lets see what the rest of this new album sounds like. This song, regardless of WHO sings it/does it… is garbage. Love ya always tho, baby! Keep reppin philly.

MUSIQ IS BAAAAACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love his music (but i didn’t like his last cd) and seeing him switch it up alil bit and show another side of himself makes me even more of a fan. I love hearing this song when it rocks on my ra-di-o!!!!!!!

Plus he looking kinda cute in his video. I never really looked at him like that, but I’m feeling his new swagger (although he’s still too short for me) .

For those who don’t like his new sound just look at it like this: The person u are at work, in church, around ur parents, and with ur friends are slightly different. Musiq is a multi dimensional person like all of us and he just doin what he feel right now in his environment- the music industry. I mean I still hear the soulchild in him. He always had some hip hop influence/ beats in his songs so i don’t think he went to the left at all. I rather him do alil bit of this than a whole lot of retro/electronica music that everyone else is hopping on right now. Just my opinion… Welcome back Musiq-ur cd betta sound better than ur last joint FOR REAL

    @ALL

Has anyone considered the title of the album as to the reason why he made this song? It took me a while to understand where he is going, but it makes sense. “On my radio” – he listens to different things, this is one style he likes, right? And I think there will be a “pop’ish, techno-like” song on there as well – sh*t why not, he may listen to Rhianna on the radio, right? He has paid his Neo-Soul dues LOL

To Musiq fans, I think that this album may be some of what the fans want mixed with some of what his personal tastes are, thats all. Also, being that his production team is self contained, I’m pretty sure they have wanted to do something different as well.

As for the song… It has a love hate thing going on I’m still torn/confused – but it is gaining some love from an audience he didn’t have, which is exactly what he wanted IMO

  9. Angelita

    I love it!!!
Change is Constant so for all the haters get over it!

  10. Taji

Why is someone considered a hater when you don’t agree with a person’s thoughts or opinions? Because they are simple minded and are sheep so you should follow the trend and like whatever they like just to get along. I’m no sheep

  11. cleen

    THIS……IS…..POOR!!

Its not “expanding his horizons” or “different” , in fact its the same as everything that was on the radio around this time last 1-2 years.

    2nd rate usher-ish siunding shizzle!

he kinda lost me at buddy anyway

  12. cantgetwrite

This is just TERRIBLE!!! Musiq, what are you doing? First Raheem starts going into the R.Kelly sound now Musiq is dang near leanin n’ rockin in his videos. All he needed was Dj Khaled screaming all over the song! I’m sorry but I cant get with this. I understand times are hard and music isnt selling like it use to yada yada yada but come on now. The beat was generic and stale, the concept was…meh, and he’s mumbling over the song instead of using his beautiful God given voice. Might as well have thrown in the vocoder(sp?). And all you people talking about how he’s expanding and growing as an artist and trying something new….NO thats bs. How are you growing and expanding as an artist when you’re doing the same “Dream/T-pain/Chris Brown ‘nem” watered down lame ass sound thats been saturating the radio for I dont know how long. There is nothing “new” about this sound. Growing as an artist means thinking OUTSIDE the box and doing something DIFFERENT (meaning something thats not been done over millions of times) not relying on the same old formula so you can appeal to 13 year old kids. Dang, cant the grown folks have our music too lol? AND FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, ALL MUSIC DOES NOT REVOLVE AROUND THE CLUB!!! GOODNESS!!! Musiq, whatever floats your boat brother…I guess. Now go sell your ringtones.

PS: this is a prime example of why you you HAVE to support good artists when they’re making good music.

  13. mofo

    @74 & CLEEN

I agree, its not growth, and it is definately not different, you are totally correct there –
and, music does not evolve around the club, I wholeheartedly agree, but…

I personally look at this song as satire, as a slap in the face like “watch me do this bullsh*t, then all of a sudden everyone knows who I am, but when I was making real music they overlooked me calling me a corny artist” – that is a statement in itself.

Plus, Musiq goes to clubs like all of us, and like most musican’s, wants to rock out to his own sh*t, without having to perform it.

Was this the way to go? Don’t know, i’m still on the fence about it, but his album will be about what he likes, not what we like him to do. Only time will tell if it was the right thing to do :-)

  14. LaddyDee

I love Musiq Soulchild and I love his video.

  15. Kena-smilez all day

I likey I really likey, It is true majority of the time pple think our culture of pple are confined to one genre of music and he’s just stating the obvious….NOW YA’LL NOW WHEN YA’LL GET IN THE CAR IF THE SONG “I’VE GOT A POCKET FULL OF SUNSHINE” COMES ON ya’ll crank it up just like old dude on white chicks when they were in the car and that was actually everybody’s song…… come to think of it lmao

  16. Who wants to do Neo Soul forever! A true artist like to venture out and see what other vibes they can do. This just shows his versitility. I’m pretty sure he got some soul tracks to…but he’s doin something different..

I jsut heard this on the radio tonight, and I actually goes pretty hard on the radio!

  17. B

I agree with you Angel. I interviewed him a few weeks ago when he was here and asked him about this song. His answer was, in not so many words, that he creates whatever he wants to create, and if anybody doesn’t like it, then there is nothing he can do to change their minds.

  18. aleah

i think this is a great song musiq soulchild said in the making of his vid that he was trying to sho that he was virsital and that soul music wasnt his only passion

  19. STLCHICK

I know he’s tryna branch out and try new things bur this just seems fake. From the chicks to the description of what he’s wearing. Musiq is too talented for this and he’s not a sex symbol. Idk. It just seems like he watched a whole bunch of R and B videos and swagga jocked but he looks worst.

  20. cantgetwrite

@ 81 I totally agree. This doesn’t seem natural at all which is what really makes it bad. I know he wants to “diversify” and all but he has a much better ear for the soul music he was originally doing IMO.

  21. BlackBarbie

what the hell is this? now hes like every other shallow artist….

  22. Msfabolous

I like the song…As far as the song for him and the video….I don’t know…I guess i can respect the fact that he’s trying to do something different. But, the reason he gave on Access Granted for doing something different bc this “is really him”, i thought was pure bc…I’m a fan…Always have been…Purchased his last cd…Glad to see i’m not the only one that is completly sold on this…Everything (it seems) is going the ATL down south route…

  23. Realistic

Ya’ll keep describing the beat as a “hot ass beat”. That’s because it’s hot to you. Not to everybody. There is a way to be versitile and not go and a completely different direction.

    #37

Those songs sound nowhere near simular to this one.

Every souljah boy song has this same beat. That says alot. Not all club bangers are ATL inspired and sound like this. Not everyone in the club goes crazy when beats like this come on. So there is a difference between growing your style of music and just doing what works right now. At the end of the day he did manage to get ya’ll attention. The people who are saying they love this also say they don’t usually listen to musiq. Duh!
It depends on where you from.

  24. Corey

I don’t like it at all. Musiq was real artist that protrayed his feeling through song. And with this it seems like he’s trying to fit in with other artist with a hit beat and nice rhymes. It seem like he’s being more fake than anything because when you come out as an artist you suppose have your music the way you want it and as time goes on you suppose to expert that sound of music for your audience not change the whole way of style. Like I still like Musiq but music but this is not him.

  25. CMC

It’s sad to see how everyone is like…”oh im a huge fan of him”, but hes a sellout!! are you serious!! its called being diverse, stepping outside the box! im pretty sure with this song, he has gained more artist than he had before, which means more money. and this is only the first single! ya’ll branding him before the album out. i am a huge fan of musiq. so when i first heard this song, being from tx..i was like yeah that whats up, because of the south beat. alot of people from texas don’t listen to him. but now he got a club banger, more people will probably be interested to see what h e is about…and i bet the rest of the album will be the musiq we are used to!!

and for you people sayin that we need to evolve from the club..ehh if you listen to what he is saying..hes talking about the same thing he always does. hes not talking about pop tags, 2steping, hoes, the typical down south music cliche..it just has a club beat!

    Musiq Loveher all the way!!!
