VIDEO: SANTOGOLD – “LIGHTS OUT”

Santogold aka Santi White just released a new video for her song, “Lights Out” off of her self-titled debut album (in stores now). This is one of my favorite songs off of her release and after finally meeting her earlier this summer, I can definitely say that Santi is a very cool and talented person.

In related news, She recently announced that she was working with Jay-Z on an upcoming song. I know that’s gonna be dope.

I LOVE SANTI!!!! And @ #50…. this song is actually featured in a beer commercial, maybe thats why you feel that way about the song. I’m not really feeling this video but I still love her CD.

  2. Emmanuel

santogold is fly. i like her album.

  3. Devron

OK, the first song was bad… this is just unbearable 80s rehashed garbage. My worthless opinion, of course, but I just can’t understand how just cause she’s a person of color doing this that she gets a pass…. there are other artists doing stuff right now — stuff that’s actually Alternative AND bearable. Maybe even pretty good.

Beauty Q.T. – you’re not crazy. It’s just that in this age of mediocrity, poor music passes as acceptable.

With bands like Foo Fighters, The Killers, new Coldplay, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and even the bad new stuff by Weezer, why would anyone give this stuff the time of day? Are we not searching beyond Black faces? This is like Alternative music that even Alternative listeners don’t listen to.

Sorry to be so strong. I don’t post often — but I just have a hard time believing that this many people like this stuff. I mean, I hate on Lil Wayne, but there’s no doubting that his stuff is hot right now. I have no problem giving the devil his due. But when the ish is bad, it’s just bad. And this is about as bad as it gets.

I love my girl santi , just kinda dissapointed in the video ,good but i expected it would have been GREAT.

  5. why?

angel is not going to give up til we’re all santogold stans like she is

  6. dyvinesun

I just can’t get into her period.

  7. lol @ 65. Naw, actually I don’t care. I dig her, so you’re going to see her on CL. lol!

  8. All I think about is that new Converse commercial…her part is actualy really catchy, and I dont even know what she says! LOL! Santigold just “feels” good.

Angel, you know where her name came from?

  9. Alexis

    Santogold is what’s up. She’s not a die-hard try hard…*cough* Solange, Rihanna…
and her music is awesome. Her and M.I.A. are like BFF and they use the same producers (Diplo) so that’s why they sound alike. She’s someone genuinely different and not something rehashed from something outta the 80′s. In short, I guess I’m a “stan” for Santogold LOL.

  10. ~*aShLeY*~

she seriously reminds me of my grandma wit them spandex on and she got a old face

  11. Junior in Jamaica

    She is um…interesting.

Reminds me of a more refined version of Macy Gray in the looks department.

  12. Santogold on the run

Can’t wait for the Jay-z/Santogold callaboration but with jay you never knew if the song is coming to his album! She is 31 and he is 38 they would make a great couple!
I think jay will fill divorce next year after seeing the movie Obsessed,so then he must look for a new chick!

  13. duck

She looks beautiful. I love her. I saw her profile on millionaire personals site “”"”"”"”"W e a l t h y L o v e s.co m”"”"”"”"”" last week. It is said she is dating young billionaire on that site.

  14. Lola

i feel like she has no stage presence but I LOVE the song, very different, very quicker. It must be an english thing because they really don’t stay in the box in terms of the type of music they are supposed to do based on what they look like.

  15. Lola

oh hold up she is from philly?? Wow now I give her even more props for breaking that r & b neo soul wall down!! Go Santogold do your thing.

  16. Even if Santogold and MIA are good friends, that doesnt mean that have to sound the same. When I heard Santo’s songs before I saw her face, I thought MIA had some new music.
I dont necessary want my best friend to copy my style.
    (yeah, I’m a MIA fan!)

This song is ok. I’d have to hear what else she’s got.
I do love that she helping to bring more variety to hiphop..

  17. ******Dame( I love it)

Ouch Beauty Q.T. how did I miss your comment yesterday?
the jay song should be hot

  18. FirstLady

I like how different santogold is…its a breath of fresh air but i’m not a fan of her vocals…doesn’t do anything for me. but she’s cool

  19. tia

i love rock music and she isnt hitting it for me….

  20. 36+

Being a teenager in the 80s I can totally appreciate Santogold. Her sound reminds me of groups like Bow Wow Wow, Siouxsie and the Bandshees, Cyndi Lauper, The Cure and the Go-Gos with an urban feel. She along with Solange and Janelle are brining back creativity, individuality, quirkiness and raw talent. Thank God the booty shaking, non/over singing wannabee diva is almost on its way out.

  21. Ms. Henry :)

I can’t seem to bring myself to listen to her cuz she just looks so sloppy to me…..Im not hating!! Im just not feeling her look so I can’t listen to her…..i’m not gonna be like most of y’all and say i love her just because the people on concrete loop like her!!!!!

  22. Islandspice

I been feelin Santogold, LES Artist, Say Aha, and Youll Find A Way get constant repeat on the IPod.

  23. d.esco

    TARGET COMMERCIAL!!

  24. Pixie is Censored

I don’t understand, honestly. I’ve been hearing this for months…commercials, right? Old Navy, I think. Maybe Target. But I’m just not familiar with the sound…I like it and I wish I knew enough to judge, but I don’t. But I’m glad she’s featured on this site…

  25. PROVOST...

It’s gonna be interesting to watch the curve of Santogold’s success, since so many black listeners have a closed-minded “Urban” ear (see Beauty Q. T.), while so many “Alternative” listeners find her particular brand subpar (Devron)…

Also, consider this: M.I.A. and Santogold are friends and colleagues who share production talent on a lot of projects. No one complains about the similarities in Boosie and Webbie’s music, or the parallels that can be drawn between a T.I. song and one from Young Dro. It’s not Santi’s fault if she and Maya are the only Artists of their ilk with which you are familiar. However it is, unfortunately, her problem.

  26. STLCHICK

creavtive and different. i like her based off of those traits alone. song w/ jay z should be dope indeed.
