A “True” vocalist would be able to sing any song & kill it. A ‘real’ vocalist is versatile. Mary is NOT a vocalist. If Mary is such a vocalist like some of you delusionals claim she shouldn’t have to struggle hitting those notes that ciara effortlessly hit.

I love both ladies. They’re both talented in their own right.
However, the Mary J version doesn’t sound like it has been mastered by the engineer yet. Sounds kinda raw. Ciara’s version sounds done and ready to put on the radio.

I like this song, however Ciara sounds almost too perfect singing this song. There has been a lot of work done to make her sound like this. She is a good entertainer, but not a singer IMO. I don’t think Mary’s voice is too heavy over this track at all, I’m going to have to go with MJBs version better minus Ne-yo singing background. If they were to perfom it live MJB would kill Ciara.

The song is a decent slow song. I could not see this on a Mary album. I was surprised to hear Mary start a song in such a high vocal registe, however. I also thought Ne-Yo background vocals were a little out of place. That said, Ciara’s hushed seductive voice is all the more smooth and appropriate for “Supernatural”. The overall feel and tone of the song is very light and that is more Ciara’s avenue.

After proving critics wrong and having a very successful run with her debut album, She had to deal w/ being a tranny and that she couldn’t sing slower songs. The tranny rumors or absurd, I’ve seen her in person, she is all woman. She then came out w/ “Promise,” which went straight to #1 on the R&B charts (so much for not being able to rock a slower song). Everyone was loving her, but once again, she was biting off Aaliyah…

I can go on and on. Let the girl do her thing, she’s not running around her saying she is Whitney Houston or Patti Labelle, I mean damn. I did listen before I commented. Ciara voice to me is just annoying. Ciara gets by because she is beautiful, has a pretty smile and she can dance her ass off ( and that works for her. What does longevity have to do with talent? Mary’s overrated. Mary can’t even pull of Be Without You live. A good singer isn’t just based on range, but that’s what many ill-informed people think. It’s a collection of consistancy, control, technique, tone, etc. Mary lacks all of what I just named. At least Ciara is consistant with her ballads/mid-tempos live and has some control and a nice tone. Mary’s inconsistant, lacks technique, has a horrible tone, etc. I like Mary and her music, but she’s overrated.

I think it was said much earlier in the thread that Mary’s version was a rough-cut that did not make it onto her album. Perhaps this is because she (and the album execs, producers etc.) did not feel that it either fit her voice or fit into the framework/objective/mood of the album. The question of who was better for this particular song was asked and answered when Mary put it down and Ciara picked it up. In music it’s imperative that performers play to their strengths. Anita Baker would be no more at home singing a Beyonce diddy, than Ciara would be singing a Patti Labelle song. Everyone is equipped with their own gift and every lid was not made for every pot. However, being a booty popping, wealthy, hypersexualized femme fatale, does not a talented singer make. Some of ya’ll are too young or naive to separate the good shit from the fake shit. But you’ll learn with time, that even though everyone likes candy, you can’t eat it everyday; it’s not nutritious. Ciara and Rihanna are candy. You can tell this by the way that your mind and experiences don’t grow when you listen to them. Music is supposed to inspire.

Ciara’s underrated. You all dismiss her as a no talent since she doesn’t have a massive range or a powerful, soulful voice. She can sing both in the studio and live. The thing is that she’s usually dancing so that takes away from the vocals. When she isn’t she sounds just fine. When I listen to her albums, I don’t see dancing; I hear singing. I came with a non-bias response. Many just dismissed listening to it because MJB is the “better” vocalist. MJB is overrated IMO. She’s not that great. She pushes her voice to limits that it cannot sustain or wasn’t meant to. If she sang regularly in a comfortable range with a decent tone then I could get down with that. Her tone is so annoying. It isn’t soul that I’m talking about, it’s just a terrible tone.

Ciara rocked this song better because her voice is sweeter and softer and it fits the song better. She is able to convey the sexual nature of the song. Mary’s voice does not do that. Plus Mary has gotten stuck in a pattern of sounding the SAME in all of her songs. Honestly, I have never understood all the hype about Mary. She often sings VERY flat and I just wonder does NO ONE else hear that but me?!

Ciara sang the song well. However, I think Mary’s makes the song more soulful and edgy. It’s about the attitude. In addition, it sounded like Ciara’s version went through the mastering process and Mary’s version didnt. I could be wronged.
