Has it occurred to anyone that this young man might have been the only one that met the criteria? Do we know if any black students applied? Now y’all know “we” are notorious for letting opportunities pass us by because we don’t/won’t take the time to apply. Know the facts first, people, before you hate. To Cube…keep doin’ what you do!

I was wondering how long it was take for some people to come in here and blast Cube for not giving the scholarship to a black person. HE picked the winner so HE decided this student had what it took to get the award. We gotta stop sittin around all damn day waiting for a “handout” just because we’re black. If you wanna win a scholarship, award, etc., get off your ass and get it!!! Don’t worry about what you SHOULD get because of your color, worry about what you CAN get because you worked for it!!

#5, I do see your viewpoint, but replace your statement with a “white man with the presidency” and it’s the same difference.
I’m sure Ice Cube wasn’t given anything in life and he doesn’t just want to give a “token” black child an award for the sake of color. White people are poor too.

@ #5 (Beauty Q.T.) - you took the words right out my mouth! I had to check myself by saying that I didn’t know the circumstances surrounding this award. I too would have loved to see one of our young people win it. On the flip side, alot of our young people are too hung up on being the ‘rapper’ than making $$$ behind the scenes.
@ #14 (Brittany) - while I can relate to what you are saying and I too wish it didn’t matter, but the truth is that it does matter. I’m sick of feeling like our young people are left in the dust, time and time again. No offense to those of other races that step up and take care of their children - they should. But everytime you turn around and someone puts forth an effort for all children, our children are still left behind. Enough is enough. If I had a fraction of what these entertainers were worth, I would make it my misson to focus on the advancement of our children. In the meantime, I do what I can for them with what I have. Something is better than nothing.

So sad reading some of these comments. So sad! I’m all about the advancement of my black brothers and sisters, but I’m also a STRONG advocate of “IF YOU WANT IT, WORK FOR IT”. Myself, personally, I’m happy to see a black man like Ice Cube even in the position to give back in some capacity. I’m sure there were black students that were considered for this scholarship but they didn’t quite fit the criteria and this one white student did. SO WHAT?!?!? I hope the parents of those black students that didn’t make it aren’t telling their children that they should’ve gotten that scholarship because a BLACK man was awarding it. Instead they should be telling their children to keep their head up and not let this deter them from working HARDER to get ANOTHER scholarship they may be qualified for, and to try to succeed in this world because of your hard work and not because your black and if anyone black gives away something, YOU should be first in line to receive it.
Congrats to Josiah for winning the scholarship, and congrats to Ice Cube for being in a position to give back like that.
Elevate your thinking process, people!! We’re way past the times of EXPECTING 40 acres and a mule, if you want it, WORK HARD TO GET IT!!!

#17 I shouldn’t really give your comment a second thought but I just couldn’t resist responding to your pure ignorance. PRO BLACK doesn’t mean ANTI anything else. Do we even know if any QUALIFIED blacks applied for the scholarship? No we don’t and you know what happens when we assume. It’s HIS money and he can give it to whomever he likes. At least he is doing something to help people educate themselves. If you are so angry that a black person didn’t get the scholarship, make sure you find out what the qualifications for the scholarship are and take it upon yourself to get the word out to more black young people who are qualified to win the scholarship and encourage them to apply next year..

That’s sounds all fine and dandy, but in the real world it does not work like this.
I used to feel the same way until it hapened to me.
In short, I was working for this company. I have over 15 yrs experience in my field and a college degree. My employee evaluations are always outstanding.
A white young lady came into my department from the file room and before that she was a cashier in a supermarket; I trained her in my department, there came an opportunity in my department to work another position (which she would need training) and I already knew how to do. They offered her the posistion and she refused because she stated that it was too difficult, when she refused they offered her more money and she still declined; so they offered me the position. I told them that I would do it if they gave me a raise and they refused. We both made the same salary. How do I know this; she and I became good friends.
God takes care of his children because I left there and make twice as much now.
In short, whether you want to see it or not. We are always going to be short changed.
Until it happens to you, you will always wear rose colored glasses.

That’s what I’m talking about! I completely understand where you’re coming from, but you can’t just sit there and whine and complain about “The Man” holding you down because you’re black, you got up, dusted yourself off and WENT AND GOT IT FOR YOURSELF. You didn’t wait for black executive to GIVE you a high paying job just because you’re black. Believe me sweetie, I see the world as IT IS, that’s why I understand that you CAN’T wait on a handout because the color of your skin. Whatever you want you gotta get it for yourself. Those who believe they’re OWED something because the color of their skin are the ones are “wearing rose colored glasses”.

@30
Did I say I was angry? I said it was funny. Most black people are funny because most black people have become clowns. A clown’s purpose is to entertain. That’s obviously what his music is, because if he raps something and doesn’t practice it, it is obviously for entertainment. If Ice Cube was a negro that didn’t front like he was so much about the upliftment of his people then I wouldn’t have given it a second thought. He’d just be the average simple cat. This is a man that featured Khalid Muhammad on his tracks back in the day, but whatever. If you’re a black actor in major Hollywood pictures, 99 times out of 100, he’s already sold out and probably bent over.
I just find it amusing when I see things like this and certain black people will guess-estimate the backlash so they’ll say, “We have to work to get what we want!”, which is codeword for “f*ck ya’ll, I’ma get mine, you get yours.”. That’s why no other race has respect for the black “community”, because all the blacks that think that they’re enlightened, educated, and empowered are usually the biggest ass-backward non-thinkers and the first one to spew their nonsense. Only black people think that you must excel in every aspect of life to deserve an opportunity at anything. You have white students that went to and graduated from Ivy League schools that barely got out of high school have arrest records because caucasians create a network of success for their children. You have white trash that make high six figures because elite whites allow southern and southeastern Europeans to take over businesses like construction and carpentry. Meanwhile you got this clown giving music scholarships to some white boy that will probably have more clout in the music industry than him in 10 years.

So true JUDAH,
While it is positive that Ice Cube is giving back in the form of educational scholarships, there are so many black underprivileged youth in the inner cities that could’ve benefited if not more than Josiah Kosier. Im just keeping it real. We all know that blacks are disproportionaly effected when it comes to a lot of things, mainly education. I’m sure his parents have the funds to finance his education.

Good lookin out O’Shea! You know down the line this white boy is gonna be in a better position to help blacks in the industry…and he will, based on this opportunity given to him by A BLACK MAN! MOCK MY WORDS….

@Judah,
You said “Only black people believe that you have to excel in every aspect of your life to deserve an opportunity at anything”. Isn’t that they way it’s suppose to be? How are you deserving of opportunities if you DON’T excel? If you don’t excel in all aspects of your life then you only DESERVE what you work for. Anything else that you get past that is someone else’s charity. Charity is few and far between nowadays, so I choose not to wait for Ice Cube, Jay-Z, Oprah, Obama, whoever to look at me and say “Hey, you’re an underacheiving, thug ass, menace to society, but you’re black, so here’s a scholarship, bank account, car and house!”. It don’t work that way, brotha. I understand that we as black people have to uplift each other and help each other get ahead in this world, but if I’m giving opportunities to someone, I wanna make sure this person is DESERVING and QUALIFIED for this opportunity, otherwise, it’s a wasted gift that I’ve given that won’t be taken full advantage of.

Preach Darkflava!! If “The Man” won’t promote you, PROMOTE YOURSELF!! In an educated way of course, find someone that values your talents and is willing to pay you what you think you are worth. This whining because you got passed over is grating. If it was your man/woman acting up, you would be whistling “To the Left, To the Left”. We don’t know anything about this young man and why he is the winner. So why are some of you acting JUST LIKE the other folks who think the only reason you got your high paying job is because you are black. Thereby totally discounting all the hard work you did to get where you are. SO WHAT a white boy won it. Just make sure that next year you let that musically talented nephew/niece or the kid down the street know about the scholarship and make sure he/she applies.

And WHY is everyone SO POSITIVE that this white kid has SO MUCH MONEY that he doesn’t need a scholarship. That’s a big problem right there, you look at white youth and assume that life is WONDERFUL for them and you look at black youth and ASSUME that they are underprivileged, ghetto youth in need of handout. That’s sad. I know alot of poor white people and I know alot of rich black people. Now had the student that Ice Cube selected been a trust fund, extremely wealthy black youth from the Hamptons, I don’t think anyone in here would be complaining about him getting the scholarship cause he already has the money for a college education.

The difference is that, if this “poor white boy” and a black man, both apply for the same job, this “poor white boy” will get the job over that black man.
That’s the point.
Regardless of what his background is, his skin color will guarantee him more opportunities than any other black (that is equally qualified) could achieve. Now I’m all for working hard to get what you want, but most times, as a black person, you will be denied opportunities! If we lived in a perfect world then everything you stated would be true, but we don’t. The system was set up to keep us down. Therefore we have to “take handouts” from those that have beat the system, and work it to our advantage. Use that money uplift our community.

DAMMIT NO ONE BLACK FIT THE CRITERIA! the end!
and though i agree with u all especially #35
Majority of black people are lazy , stupid , lacking guidance , and if u gave them a chance u would regret it. I would have liked to see someone black get the scholarship but Ice Cube aint the only black man with money They closed down and all black college (which im against anyway but thats for a later time) u would think one or 10 of our fav celebs could do something even start programs or something
the blame is going to the wrong place….i do agree black people need to start looking out for each other alot more, but the bad apples are the ones who spoil it
at the end of the day i think its a lack of education among folks…which how this got started in the first place.
ps. i think they should come up with an in between for high school graduates and college freshmen…..something transitional and mandatory should be in place and they should make a law that u cant drop out of school or ur parents pay heavy fines …u would see change in america as a whole

@Darkflava
Are you saying that black people don’t excel strictly because they don’t want to excel? That must be what you’re saying because based on the statistics that basically condemn black students the only options can be that: a) the educational curriculum has failed the students b) the students have failed themselves c) the system has failed the both the curriculum and the students d) a combination of the first three. I wonder if when people like yourself go into any business that’s run by the other races if you pay attention to how their business is run. You have people from other countries that barely speak English (yet have their own lucrative businesses), and will only employ their own race. The only other people not of their race that they will employ are the Mexicans because they can be paid next to nothing and can and will do everything. Then they will have their children working with them so that they can learn how a business is run. These are things that black people accrue thousands in loans to learn in college, that the other races are taught from childhood, on top of the importance of loyalty TO ONE’S OWN RACE. It so simple it is elementary. If you can’t understand that, I don’t know what to tell you. When you watch the news or read the newspaper, the media delivers stats (whether positive or negative) based on race. They don’t say, “this percentage of women has AIDS”, “or this percentage of men are incarcerated”. They say, “this percentage of BLACK women have AIDS and this percentage of BLACK men are incarcerated”.
Here in New York there was a story of a Serbian basketball player that stomped a Jewish boy into a coma. He fled to Serbia and his country gave him asylum because these other races understand the importance of unity. He knew that he could not get a fair trial in America because the Jews run the judicial system. Only fools think that race doesn’t matter and that success is based strictly on merit. I believe that many blacks will vouch for nonsense like this because they believe that the average young black male is beyond redemption. Nobody has ever said that a black man that is a criminal should be absolved of all his wrongdoings. People assume that’s what one is saying when they advocate common sense, because they want to make sure that any and all young black males that “succeed” come through the straight gate of American “success”, which means watered down, fagg*tized, non-thinking, money-worshippers. Plus they like to see examples of this false unity with white people; so it warms the heart of black people, particularly black women, to see a white man have fellowship with a black person.

I’m more upset with the state of black America. It’s disturbing and I can say 100% truth, I can see why black people distance themselves from other black people. We are the most closed-minded, ghetto , embrace negativity instead of posistivity, our work ethic is terrible, we do the least amount of work and demand respect and decent wages. So, I can see where the poster is saying, Ice Cube would have given the scholarship to a black guy, he would turn around and say, I’m going to become a rapper, or a rap producer.
And please stop saying that our failure as a race stems from the government, cuz that is a joke, because people determine their destiny.
OT: Black people love Obama, but how many black people would actually gravitate towards him, if he wasn’t in the limelight. If anything the majority of black women would say, I can’t talk to him, he ain’t fine, he’s too smart, he can’t dress, he doesn’t have a record, he needs drama, he’s not flashy. Sorry for the rant.

Last post is so correct. Black people always gravitate towards these pro-black artists, believing that they are only for black people. This is a business. And who is to say that Ice Cube doesn’t have a silent partner in this scholarship program?
But, I agree that the majority of Cube’s movies make blacks look bad, i.e. ghetto, ignorant, uneducated, lazy, pothead losers. If it wasn’t for Katt Williams portrayal of the diminutive pimp, Friday after Next would have been a waste, the Friday franchise is nothing more but Nigga Trash, but he made it bearable.

Before people go popping off at the mouth you need to know what requirements were. People or organizations just don’t give their money. There are alot of scholarships out there you have to apply. I wish I could get Tom Joyners single moms scholarship but guess what I can’t because I am not getting my Masters @ a HBC but that is cool with me. I have a cousin who is a freshman that is majoring in music and he didn’t even know about that scholarship because he didn’t do his research. That’s like when people apply for grants not everyone get them and they have to get a student loan.

I don’t understand why we just can’t say “wtg” to the guy and move on with our own lives. If everyone is so upset about it not being someone of color, then push ya’ll own selves out there. Do what you need to do to make sure that someone of color gets something. Don’t worry about what’s going on with anyone other than you. Do you. No one else.

It sad how my own race (black) gets on my damn nerves with the ignorance! Rolling my eyes AND shaking my damn head!!!!!!!!!! Don’t even have work experience but with your first job expecting to make $60,000/yr. Get on welfare and get mad cause they cut your check like the government OWE you some money. Thinking just cause a mofo is black he can just come off the streets and walk right up to Ice Cube and get a scholarship. STFU!! For those of you who have children instill in them good work ethics, how important an education is as oppose to how to keep your air force ones clean or how to do the soulja boy!

@ JUDAH
you hit the nail on the head w/ post #40. when a poor white person w/ a criminal record can get a job/opportunity, etc quicker than a poor black person w/no criminal record, ice cube looks really stupid giving this white boy an award. especially coming from where he’s come from.

Me being an African American who’s pursuing my musical goals I took the time to do some online research about THE SCHOOL the award was presented at, hell did anybody here even look for that. I found the myspace page http://www.myspace.com/mcnallysmith. Check out the pictures, THERE IS NO AFRICAN AMERICANS at the school. Hell the school is in Minnesota. How many black people you actually think live there. I know that’s a stereo type about the state, but come on let’s be real about. The DAMN tuition for the school is 20,000$ that kinda minimize’s most black people from applying. But if your really SERIOUS about music, & not for PLAY PLAY, wanting to become the next “MICROWAVE” rapper. then you will somehow aggressivly find a way to make your dream happen. this entire debate is actually intresting because I understand the process for the scholarship. It probably would have been better (In my eyes) if a blackperson recieved the award, but Im happy that Ice Cube is in a position to Give a Scholship to ANYBODY. regardless of their race. He pick the most qualified individual. It’s kind of a double edge sword, because even though we all know black people will TRULY NEVER have a “FAIR” shoot in a lot of things, we can’t go into every situation and not give it our all. We have to try twice as hard because we are black. SO WHAT he gave the award to a white guy, GET OVER and Move on. Were on the verge of almost having a BLACK PRESIDENT, something that I never thought could happen. which, if it does, is monumental to me & other black men who don’t really have that many positive male black role models that’s not in entertainment or an athlete. So I respect Ice Cube for seeing the bigger picture & growing up. I don’t doubt one bit that cube has lost touch with the hood. What about the other things he’s done for black people. Shit he taught me how to say Fuck the police.

Ice Cube has GROWN from a NIGGA With An Attitude.
MAKE AN OBJECTIVE, LEARN THE ROLE, PLAY THE GAME.
That’s what he’s doing.

I am glad that Icecube is doing something positive in the community (for once), however the nasty attitutudes of some of the people on here is quite disgraceful. This gravitational hate towards people who are non-black needs to stop.
Just because a person has white complexioned skin doesn’t automatically mean that they came from wealth, that is stereotyping, it’s just like saying a person who has black skin is poor. God has created a destiny for everybody on this earth, and it was this boy’s destiny to win this scholarship, no one on here (unless you know this person personally) knows his background (he could have a black grandmother we don’t know), or knows where he came from to get to this stage.
So saying ‘oh a black person should have got this award’ does not make correct sense or any sense at all, you are saying a person should win this award because they are colour b. That is discrimination, we as black people do not own music (yes i’m a black woman) music is for everybody. Instead we should be saying more black people should be giving out scholarships building schools and hospitals, are you trying to say we as black people are beggars we must feed of other peoples chicken change! Never! Our ancestors created mathmatics and astronomy and ruled the world!! We should be the ones helping others!
Every human being on this earth goes through struggles not just black people.
I was raised to believe that i am equal to every single race on this earth, i am a proud african lady straight from the motherland so you cannot tell me this racism rubbish, we are all the same at the end of the day. And why should we let something as little of 1/16th of a inch, (thats how thin skin is) stop you from reaching your goals.
It’s all in the mind, your mentality can either empower you and propel you to the top, or bring you down and limit your capacity to succeed.
Racism does exist, but it’s up to you if you want to let it limit you or push you to succeed.
Where are all the black lawyers, doctors, stock brokers, engineers, fashion designers is itr music alone we can succeed in, the music industry is already over saturated by us, lets follow suit of our ancestors and do something influential and get more involved in politics and making a real difference in peoples lives.
All i hear these days from little black girls and boys, especially the boys is ‘i wanna be like 50 cent, i wanna rap’ there’s nothing wrong with this dream, but why do they only want to be rappers and dancers and video girls it because this is all they see, we need more good black role models in societythat our children can aspire to!!
Wake up my black sisters and brothers and arise!!!!!

@Sarah, Judah, ObamaMomma: You need to quickly send Bill Gates, Microsoft billionaire and philanthropist, and Andre Agassi, retired tennis great and philanthropist a memo that they are sell outs to their “white” race. Over the years both have awarded scholarships to inner city black youth. According to all of you they should be supporting only white youth since Ice Cube should support only black youth. The Bill and Melanie Gates Foundation spends millions of dollars annually supporting inner city black youth on a National scale and Agassi awards educational and athletic (tennis) scholarships to youth in the Las Vegas area. Shame on them for planting a seed and giving a lifelong gift to needy youths outside of their “white” race. Thanks to you the CL readers have been enlightened. Write the memo and I will give you the stamp.
