Actor, producer and legendary hip hop icon Ice Cube spoke to a raucously vocal group of students at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul, MN, on Thursday before announcing the winner of the Ice Cube Scholarship, Josiah Kosier.
Ice Cube, who chooses the scholarship winner annually, awarded Josiah with the four-year, full tuition scholarship for studies in music technology.

Ice Cube is so beautiful to me….
I just love Ice Cube . He is such a great black man
Cube is such a SELL OUT. Those movies he makes are an embarrassment. And it’s so typical that with all the young people in his community without an opportunity that Cube would sponsor this kid who sure does not come across as “needy” in my view. Needy people require more help just something to keep in mind “CUBE”
Typical
SO TYPICAL
What really surprised me is when young black hear all that militant rants from these rappers & believe that these brothers are down for the cause. No, they are down to get paid. They feed you what you want to hear to sell cd’s. An NWA member giving a white boy a 4yr scholarship. SMDH!
Last post is so correct. Black people always gravitate towards these pro-black artists, believing that they are only for black people. This is a business. And who is to say that Ice Cube doesn’t have a silent partner in this scholarship program?
But, I agree that the majority of Cube’s movies make blacks look bad, i.e. ghetto, ignorant, uneducated, lazy, pothead losers. If it wasn’t for Katt Williams portrayal of the diminutive pimp, Friday after Next would have been a waste, the Friday franchise is nothing more but Nigga Trash, but he made it bearable.
Kudos to Cube!!!
Before people go popping off at the mouth you need to know what requirements were. People or organizations just don’t give their money. There are alot of scholarships out there you have to apply. I wish I could get Tom Joyners single moms scholarship but guess what I can’t because I am not getting my Masters @ a HBC but that is cool with me. I have a cousin who is a freshman that is majoring in music and he didn’t even know about that scholarship because he didn’t do his research. That’s like when people apply for grants not everyone get them and they have to get a student loan.
I don’t understand why we just can’t say “wtg” to the guy and move on with our own lives. If everyone is so upset about it not being someone of color, then push ya’ll own selves out there. Do what you need to do to make sure that someone of color gets something. Don’t worry about what’s going on with anyone other than you. Do you. No one else.
It sad how my own race (black) gets on my damn nerves with the ignorance! Rolling my eyes AND shaking my damn head!!!!!!!!!! Don’t even have work experience but with your first job expecting to make $60,000/yr. Get on welfare and get mad cause they cut your check like the government OWE you some money. Thinking just cause a mofo is black he can just come off the streets and walk right up to Ice Cube and get a scholarship. STFU!! For those of you who have children instill in them good work ethics, how important an education is as oppose to how to keep your air force ones clean or how to do the soulja boy!
@ JUDAH
you hit the nail on the head w/ post #40. when a poor white person w/ a criminal record can get a job/opportunity, etc quicker than a poor black person w/no criminal record, ice cube looks really stupid giving this white boy an award. especially coming from where he’s come from.
Me being an African American who’s pursuing my musical goals I took the time to do some online research about THE SCHOOL the award was presented at, hell did anybody here even look for that. I found the myspace page http://www.myspace.com/mcnallysmith. Check out the pictures, THERE IS NO AFRICAN AMERICANS at the school. Hell the school is in Minnesota. How many black people you actually think live there. I know that’s a stereo type about the state, but come on let’s be real about. The DAMN tuition for the school is 20,000$ that kinda minimize’s most black people from applying. But if your really SERIOUS about music, & not for PLAY PLAY, wanting to become the next “MICROWAVE” rapper. then you will somehow aggressivly find a way to make your dream happen. this entire debate is actually intresting because I understand the process for the scholarship. It probably would have been better (In my eyes) if a blackperson recieved the award, but Im happy that Ice Cube is in a position to Give a Scholship to ANYBODY. regardless of their race. He pick the most qualified individual. It’s kind of a double edge sword, because even though we all know black people will TRULY NEVER have a “FAIR” shoot in a lot of things, we can’t go into every situation and not give it our all. We have to try twice as hard because we are black. SO WHAT he gave the award to a white guy, GET OVER and Move on. Were on the verge of almost having a BLACK PRESIDENT, something that I never thought could happen. which, if it does, is monumental to me & other black men who don’t really have that many positive male black role models that’s not in entertainment or an athlete. So I respect Ice Cube for seeing the bigger picture & growing up. I don’t doubt one bit that cube has lost touch with the hood. What about the other things he’s done for black people. Shit he taught me how to say Fuck the police.
I Love my black people, but I HATE NIGGAZ.- Chris Rock.
Ice Cube has GROWN from a NIGGA With An Attitude.
MAKE AN OBJECTIVE, LEARN THE ROLE, PLAY THE GAME.
That’s what he’s doing.
I am glad that Icecube is doing something positive in the community (for once), however the nasty attitutudes of some of the people on here is quite disgraceful. This gravitational hate towards people who are non-black needs to stop.
Just because a person has white complexioned skin doesn’t automatically mean that they came from wealth, that is stereotyping, it’s just like saying a person who has black skin is poor. God has created a destiny for everybody on this earth, and it was this boy’s destiny to win this scholarship, no one on here (unless you know this person personally) knows his background (he could have a black grandmother we don’t know), or knows where he came from to get to this stage.
So saying ‘oh a black person should have got this award’ does not make correct sense or any sense at all, you are saying a person should win this award because they are colour b. That is discrimination, we as black people do not own music (yes i’m a black woman) music is for everybody. Instead we should be saying more black people should be giving out scholarships building schools and hospitals, are you trying to say we as black people are beggars we must feed of other peoples chicken change! Never! Our ancestors created mathmatics and astronomy and ruled the world!! We should be the ones helping others!
Every human being on this earth goes through struggles not just black people.
I was raised to believe that i am equal to every single race on this earth, i am a proud african lady straight from the motherland so you cannot tell me this racism rubbish, we are all the same at the end of the day. And why should we let something as little of 1/16th of a inch, (thats how thin skin is) stop you from reaching your goals.
It’s all in the mind, your mentality can either empower you and propel you to the top, or bring you down and limit your capacity to succeed.
Racism does exist, but it’s up to you if you want to let it limit you or push you to succeed.
Where are all the black lawyers, doctors, stock brokers, engineers, fashion designers is itr music alone we can succeed in, the music industry is already over saturated by us, lets follow suit of our ancestors and do something influential and get more involved in politics and making a real difference in peoples lives.
All i hear these days from little black girls and boys, especially the boys is ‘i wanna be like 50 cent, i wanna rap’ there’s nothing wrong with this dream, but why do they only want to be rappers and dancers and video girls it because this is all they see, we need more good black role models in societythat our children can aspire to!!
Wake up my black sisters and brothers and arise!!!!!
@Sarah, Judah, ObamaMomma: You need to quickly send Bill Gates, Microsoft billionaire and philanthropist, and Andre Agassi, retired tennis great and philanthropist a memo that they are sell outs to their “white” race. Over the years both have awarded scholarships to inner city black youth. According to all of you they should be supporting only white youth since Ice Cube should support only black youth. The Bill and Melanie Gates Foundation spends millions of dollars annually supporting inner city black youth on a National scale and Agassi awards educational and athletic (tennis) scholarships to youth in the Las Vegas area. Shame on them for planting a seed and giving a lifelong gift to needy youths outside of their “white” race. Thanks to you the CL readers have been enlightened. Write the memo and I will give you the stamp.
Congrats Josiah! Hey, i’m from MN, too…
OMG, he looks so handsome. Just saw his profile on millionaire dating site “”"”"C e l e b C u p i d.c o m”"”"”"” last week. I am wondering what kind of relationship he is looking for on that site. Is he single now? Just curious!☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

Cube….you think you could have found a deserving young African American? The mind is a terrible thing to waste!
