I’ve been getting sew in’s ( my natural hair braided) and have noticed growth with my hair when I get it redone every couple months. Is having my hair braided helping or hurting my hair. I noticed it is not as thick,( I should mention I am bi-racial, black and white, my hair is already a little fine to begin with to give you an idea) but it is actually growing, I noticed a little bit of breakage though after my hair is taken out of the braids. I am ready to wear my natural hair but want to keep it braided if it helping, but if it’s hurting, what can I do to help the process of my hair growing?

I would like to know what ursla recommends for natural hair/no perm to grow faster? What is the best way to get a sew in… net.. no net? What is the best brand/type (powder, rinse, permanent) of hair color to use? I have too many questions for one person but I really want to know these things. LOL

Blessings. I’ve been a loc wearer for over 6 years, what do your recommend for conditioning? Currently, I’m just using natural Almond Oil for shine, but I always find that the winter weather can be very harsh on my locs. Also, do you have any tips for curling your locs? Braiding gives a nice crimped looked, but I would like some large soft curls. My hair is mid back, but I have a thick head of hair, so using regular rollers is almost impossible…any suggestions?

Hi,

I’m about the same complexion as Ursula, maybe Kelly Rowland (somewhere in that family) and I really want to color my hair. Years ago I had blonde highlights but now my hair is its natural color (dark brown) and I would like to color all of my hair, if not all of my hair heavy highlights. The guy that does my hair suggest jet black, I knwo I don’t want blonde, btu there aren’t many color options. What do you suggest for your complection?

Hi Ursula! I noticed that those celebs who wear naural hair and have to make daily appearences also get their hair styled daily. In between visits with my stylist I use a FHI flat iron but I’ve noticed major damage. Should I only allow my stylist to use heat in my hair? I thought that as long as you apply haet to clean hair than you wouldn’t be at risk of damaging it. What are your suggestions? Love you work! You’re a hair icon! Noel P.

Ursula,
I just took out a sew in and noticed my hair is breaking especially in the back. I left the sew in-in for about 2 weeks(which is the norm for me). I feel like my hair is dirty if I leave it any longer. I have shoulder length hair with a black rinse. I just got my ends clipped last month. A sew in is just so convenient for me that I get them in maybe once every few months. If not my hair is usually in a long layered wrap. How long should I give my hair a break in between sew ins. Or does it make a difference?

I hate doing my hair.. I’m lazy but i want something funky.

So after thinking about it and not wanting all the fuss of natural hair, I think I like Chrisette Michelle’s hair ( and high lights ) in her video “Love is You”

How can I do this, keep it versatile like she does? Are there any other options? Is short hair the way to go for low maintenance yet makes a statement.

I work in IT so I can pretty much do whatever, but I’m jus ttoo lazy to curl and do a bunch of stuff to it everyday.

Up to 3 months ago it was bald, now it’s a short for, so I’m still in between and would like hair that rocks.

This may sound like some previous questions, excuse the unitentional redundance :)

I have been wearing my hair naturally for about 3 years. I generally only go to the salon when it’s time for a trim (and sometimes I don’t do that as regular as I should) and I don’t wear it straight very often to reduce heat damage. I know several cute styles for my natural hair, which by the way swings just a few inches above my strap, but I’m interested in coloring my hair. I’ve been hearing a few things about henna coloring. Or course, I wanna try it since it’s all natural. Can you do henna’s at home and where can I go about finding henna coloring products in Nashville,TN? Secondly, I saw a re-run of the Tyra show a day or so ago and they were saying it’s better to use a plug-in hot comb versus a flat iron. How true is that and what which would suggest for natural straight styles? I never wear weave so I don’t need any suggestions that include that option…thanks in advance :)

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 /

Hi Ursula, I have two questions.

I have recently cut the remains of my relaxed ends in June and have been all natural for 2 1/2 months. My biggest issue is finding a good leave in treatment that will give me manageability and shine. So far I have only found luck with my mango butter that I use for my twist outs, but I feel that even with the mango butter my hair is still missing something. Do you know of any good leave in treatments for natural hair that would promote manageability and shine?

My second question is with the winter months coming up I know I will need a protective style that will keep my natural hair in the best condition and protected during the colder days. What protective styles do you recommend for natural hair? I would like a style I can wear to work and still look professional and one I can manage on the weekends.

Also if you have any other suggestions, feel free to throw that in too!

Thank You

Hey Ursula,

I have long (a little above the elbow) length hair and i want to cut it into a style but i have no idea what will work for me. My face is oval (i guess you can say), but when i wear my hair out(in blowdried state) it makes my face look even longer. i dont mind cutting off a couple inches (below my shoulder is my limit). What do you suggest i do? and also my hair gets curly when wet but i go from looking like Christina Millian at the 2003 MTV music awards to Diana Ross as soon as it dries. I’ve used gel before but it makes my hair hard and dry. What do you reccomend i use to keep my curls soft and frizz free? Thank you so much for taking the time out to read this and any of you radvice is greatly appreciated.

Ok I have a couple questions…Might be redundant I didn’t have time to read the previous comments to see if someone has the same issues.
1st What is the best way to keep hair moisturized during the winter,i.e is there a moisurizer thats good for daily use?
2nd When I get my hair permed and then wash it at home it no longer seems straight my edges are not smooth at all. Is that maybe cause the perm is no good (if so what is the best brand?) or is there a technique to washing your hair?
3rd In genereal what brand of products do you swear by to get healthy hair?

Theres more but I dont want to over do it.

Thanks Ursula

Does Rihanna or Keyshia Cole use Manic Panic?

Manic Panic is an herbal and protein complex, and therefore doesn’t hurt your hair — in fact, it’s conditioning. Most “natural” hair color dyes are chemical and therefore damage your hair. Bleaches are the harshest on your hair.

Processed hair (colored, permed, etc) will also grab the hair color strongly. This type of hair DOES NOT always need to be bleached, as the results will usually be good. (Bleaching processed hair can have a damaging result, please consult a pro before you attempt this). If your hair is pre-processed, simply wash the hair with a PH Balanced shampoo or any plain, simple shampoo that does not contain conditioners. Remember, you want your hair to be as oil/coating free as possible to permit the Hair Color to penetrate the hair shaft.

Color may temporarily stain the skin and may permanently stain clothes, towels, bedding and other material. Do not use alkaline products in conjunction with Hair Color. This will upset the acid-balanced state necessary for maximum absorption of color by the hair. If setting lotions or blow-dry lotions are required to be used, low pH, non-alcohol based products are recommended.

Using something like a light purple or a pale blue on dark hair is going to do nothing but condition it. Darker shades of dyes Manic Panic usually contain more pigment which will help the colour show up and stay on your hair. These colours will add a slight tint or a highlight in bright sunlight to your hair. You should also be aware that these dyes work by sinking into the hair and so if your hair is natural it’s usually less damaged and the dye will find it more difficult to soak in. For this reason, the dye will probably last for a lot less time than stated on the bottle.

Your hair is Black/Dark Brown
Manic Panic - Deadly Nightshade*, Vampire Red*, After Midnight Blue*, Black & Blue, Enchanted Forest*

Your hair is Medium/Light Brown
Manic Panic - Infra Red*, Pillarbox, Purple Haze*, Plum Passion

it’s good to get info from a stylist but it’s also nice to become self reliant. alot of u are asking questions that u could find out for yourself. u should go to longhaircareforum.com and alot of ur questions will b answered. i already know the answers to some of these questions but i’m not a professional. but i do suggest u go to hair websites. some of the stuff may be unconventional but i can tell u that my hair has done a complete 180. it takes care and patience. there’s no magic pill for long hair. u guys should check it out

Yes I live n NYC and it is hard as hell to find a salon/stylist that can style/cut hair. I go to the Dominicans. I finally got up enough nerve to cut my hair this summer, and the cut is cute, but I need some flava to it style wise, instead of the basic wash n set look. Where can I go so that when I leave the salon I actually look like I got my hair professionally done!?! Thanks! :)

I see that everyone has already asked questions that I was going to ask tee hee soo..

I KNOW this is old school, but what are your thoughts on the hot comb? I know people that use it instead of getting relaxers. Is this a better alternative than using chemicals?

Also keeping a scalp healthy; I use grease my scalp every other day, which led to build up quicker therefore making me wash my hair sooner than I liked to. I could go on forever about all my scalp dilemmas but I don’t want to be a hog! Whats the best route for taking care of your scalp?

PLEASE what ever you do….Don’t use glue in your hair. Take it from someone who tried it before. It takes forever to come out. Like 2-3 weeks, cause the glue starts to ball up. Girl, it’s cute till you have to take it out, then it works your nerves!

It usually comes out when you comb or brush your hair. Now they have glue remover like at SALLEY’S for instance, so just a heads up.

For those who may want to know, KERA CARE hair products work wonders for my hair. Makes it very manageable.

Hey Ursula,

Well, I usually do sew-ins but I was wondering how long it should be kept in as some ppl have different opinions on this but is it generally 6-8 weeks? Also, I recently took one out and asked my hairdresser for a trim as I’ve heard that a trim should be done ever so often, but she said since I was putting another weave right back in, that wasn’t necessary, was this really the case? What do you recommend for detangling hair as it gets tangled alot….

And what do you recommend for making hair thicker?

Also, I’m in the process of growing my hair longer and I was planning on dyeing (semi-permanent) it when I’m done but I know the process can be damaging for some ppl so should I do it now to see if it’ll be ok on my hair, wait till it’s longer then dye it (and possibly have to start all over again) or not dye it at all?

Thanks!!!!

This is a great idea Concreteloop! My question is: How do people in Hollywood maintain and care for their natural hair (natural meaning “hair without perms or chemicals”? For instance, what does Tyanna Taylor use on her hair to keep it moisturized and to have good curl definition?

I also have a hair blog which focuses on teaching woman how to accept, love, grow, and care for their Natural hair. I have been Natural for 8 years and have been able to achieve waist length Natural hair with my method of caring for my hair. After reading the first article about Ursula S. I went and chopped off all my hair. Before I did that I researched a lot info about face shapes and what would do nice with my face shape. It just felt like too much researching so I chopped it off and now I have something similar to a mushroom but short in the back, somewhat tapered and I liked it. I came back to school and see that everyone has cut their hair as well. What can I do to take it to the next level? I’m not talking completely bald, but I mean unique. Color wise, and style wise..I realize that this is a lot of questions but I am dying for a new look. I tried to find your email address and ask you before but I have no such luck.

Hi Ursula,

Do you have any suggestions on products to use on big curly hair? My hair is curlier in some parts than others and sometimes it can look dry. I want it to look even all over. I was actually planning to do some research on products and stylists that specialize in naturally curly hair. Do you have any suggestions? I have been using the same cheap gel for the past 20 years! I wash my hair with whatever is on sale and I know this is starting to take a toll on my hair. I have used Mixed Chicks before but it really didn’t benefit me much. If you have any suggestions on stylists..I live in LA. I really need help!

I was wondering for a sew-in is it better to s-type braids or a bee-hive?

Last one! My hair is permed but I want it to look naturally curly sometimes is there a easy way to achieve this without getting a texturizer?

Thanks for the help!

For hair that is naturally curly but has been recently permed and in a wrap style, what do you recommend to prevent breakage and dryness?

Why any black stars leave their hair natural ? Do you think natural black hair can be stylished without changing their structure ? Wouldn’t it be a good thing to show black women and above all black children that they don’t have to relax their hair or put wigs to be beautiful ?

Ursula please stop putting delusional length weaves in black women’s hair that is not at all belivable length or texture. Stop processing self hating ass black women’s hair because black hair doesn’t grow down your back it goes up and out. *sigh* White standards of beauty got black people acting and looking like some fools

I cut my hair to the scalp last year but I decided to let it grow back. It’s long enough for a short haircut in which I’m wearing today. However, I’m not wearing a perm-I’m wearing a press. My question is; “How do I maintain that fresh-from-the-shop shine that blings after a nice press job?”

Hi Ursula,
I am 35 years old and I have noticed that my hair is thinning and seriously breaking around the edges , especially right at my center part (on the left side, LOL). I have curly hair that I wear natural for the most part, but the breakage is not a game and I am afraid to press it or get my once annual weave, cause it’s looking thin! I have been advised to use Dr, Miracle’s products and Biotin tablets. Is that good advice?

I recently permed my hair in March after cutting off the perm hair and going back natural for a year due to breakage. I’ve been going to the same hairdresser, using the same perm, conditioning every 2 weeks and perming within 7-8 weeks. I have very thin hair. However, yesterday when i went to perm my hair as scheduled my hair has bad breakage in the back, the ends are gone. What am I doing wrong? How do I prevent this from happening a third time? Should I go back natural again and start over? What do you recommend?

I went natural about a year ago; this summer cut the perm completely out. I now am straightening my hair, because truly I have a bob and am not completely comfortable wearing it in curls. I know from prior experience that putting heat to your hair regularly can cause it to break off, so my question to you is do you have any ideas of how I could wear my hair. I was thinking spiral curls, like done with the flexy rods, but scared it would just look kind of coarse. Thanks!

Hi girl,
I frequently check out youtube to find out what other black females are using on their hair. I’ve seen quite a few blogs featuring a product called MTG, which I think is primarily made for horses, however these ladies are giving it rave reviews. Can you please let me know if this product is safe, and the pros/cons of using it.

Thanks!!

Thanks

Hi Ursula,

I typically wear my hair wrapped, braided, or in a ponytail. My hair (relaxed) reaches midback. When I go to the salon, I see women with beautiful hairstyles. (Weaves/sew-ins). I tried years ago to wear a weave and my hair broke off tremendously. Are there any styles for natural/chemically relaxed hair that are sexy and stylish without getting a weave or cutting my hair?

With the economic situation being the way it is I cant afford to get it done as often as i do so ive been doing it myself. When i curl my hair after i wash it im looking for that salon straight look in my hair but im not getting it. Can you suggest a good flat iron to use for that look.

What advice can you give her to really branch out and get more acquainted with surrounding herself with good ppl and some possible job offers?

Hi Ursula,

I’ve had my hair in braids for about 4 months now, I regularly re-do them myself so it’s not a problem keeping them in for a long time.
I usually take my hair out in the summer and straighten it as perms usually damage my hair and I have to grow it back all over again.
I’m thinking of partially putting my hair in a weave just for a new look…I want my fringe to be my own hair along with part of the sides and front, but whenever I go out and get hot my hair reverts RIDICULOUSLY, and I was wondering do you recommend anything that I can put on my hair that’s not as strong as a perm to save me from being uber natural when I get excited on the dance floor - lol?
Would appreciate your response!

Hi Ursula, I have been getting sew-ins for about last year (normally giving my hair about a months time to breathe after taking one out) My last sew-ins have been half sew-ins, with straight weave, leaving my hair out for versatility. However, now I would like to switch over to wet n wavy hair, but I was curious to know if it is possible to leave some of my straight hair out and still achieve the wet n wavy effect.

Sooo…

I grew out my hair after relaxing it for many years and I’ve only had it curly for about 2 years but still I’m lost as to how to style it. I like to leave my hair out but the products I use (conditioner and other curl products) end up leaving my hair crunchy when it dries and I HATE that. I mostly use it because without it my hair will be a big frizz ball. I’d like a product (whether it’s shampoo, conditioner or leave-in) that I can put in my hair (dry or wet) and it will keep my curls soft but manageable. I don’t mind some poof and body but I don’t want it to look dry.

PLEASE advise. Thanx!

My hair has been thinning recently and i don’t know whether its from stress or something that i’m doing. Hi,

I have a very DRY scalp and long, thin hair. Every time I get my hair washed and treated at the salon, they keep me under the dryer for 45-50 min. When I get from under the dryer, and the stylist wants to style my hair, there is so much white, flaky stuff coming out of my hair, even after it was just washed. What can I use to prevent this from happening every time?

Thanks,
Dry scalped chick.
