Sun I never said that dating within your race was “hood”. If you read my comment I said if people don’t want to date outside of their race that is fine but we should not condemn others who don’t allow race to be a hang up and are then attacked as being “weird.” This is 2008 and dating outside of your race is neither cultured or special so I don’t understand why people seem to shocked that Zoë or Travis date people they love no matter what skin tone they have. Being “Hood” was a euphemism for staying inside of your neighborhood (comfort zone) and not being open to having new experiences…doing what is SAFE.

Some people are modern with their thinking and how they approach dating (and life) and that is a good thing and even if others don’t like it. I think African Americans have experienced enough prejudice that they should be the last people not to accept how others may want to express how they feel about people regardless of race.

On Beyonce….Beyonce’s family line maybe on her mothers side is clearly a mix of different races…White being one of them. This is why Solange’s son Daniel has BLUE eyes. Racial mixing has been going on for years and you can’t always tell by skin tone what the racial makeup of people are. Beyonce’s roots are Creole so that is where that statement came from. Some of you people are so literal it’s sad but again it makes sense. Too many people don’t know things that go on in the world because they are ignorant (by choice) and that is what is behind these attacks on people who date outside of their race. You should look into your own background I’m sure you may have relatives who dated outside of their race.

I don’t think there’s anything cultured about interracial dating. Another posters mentioned that Latinos don’t date outside their race because they’re trying to preserve their culture. And, personally, I agree with it. There are so many kids that are products of bi-racial mixing, at alarming rates. Soon there won’t even be a ‘African American’ race. It’s just a shame that more black people don’t want, nor care to preserve OUR culture/heritage.

You have problems and they are based in ignorance. There are no pure races. and just because you are mixed does not mean you are no longer African American.
The African American experience is a diverse one and it’s not tied to visual aesthetics.
Race is a very complicated thing but the factors that define them are also wide. To say you don’t feel comfortable dating outside of your race is fine. That is your choice. But to cite some preservation of a race by only dating inside of it is limiting to you. I say date who you love. I do not support people dating others for status symbols or the myriad of other reasons you hear today.
But as I said with Beyonce….many people assume that because her parents both look like African Americans that they don’t have a more diverse lineage. If you look at Solange’s son and the father Daniel you may scratch your head as to where Daniel’s blue eyes come from. Most people in America are mixed we don’t have pure races in America. It’s just foolish because you can’t tell the racial makeup of people just by looking. And you argument you make is the same one made against many African Americans when they were lynched for even looking at white women….keeping the race “pure.”

SMH what’s the big deal with interracial couples? Darling interracial coupling has been around for centuries. People are just more accepting and open to it. I find that black women/people have more of a problem with me dating black men then white women/people. I agree with what Chris said about the African American experience being based on more than visual aesthetics, meaning a half black individual and you are equally as important and add the same amount of value to our rich and diverse culture.

If anything African Americans are a by-product of inter-racial mixing. Beyonce is not unique in that her lineage is not pure African. I promise that if I were to take the bloodwork of ANY African American individual who can be traced back to slavery, their blood can also be traced back to European and/or the genetics of the indigenous peoples of America. We are a unique blend, with African heritage at the forefront of it all, but don’t fool yourself into thinking we are some pure all mighty race. That doesn’t exist in America, for anyone.
