MUSIC NEWS: JANET OFFICIALLY PARTS WAYS WITH DEF JAM
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Super producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins exclusively revealed to our friends at Rap-Up.com that Janet Jackson has officially parted ways with Def Jam and is now a free agent.
There were rumors that Janet had been having problems with her label after the release of her second single, “Rock With U,” with speculation that there were discrepancies over single releases and promotions.
“We didn’t get the support from the record company,” Rodney discloses.
“Janet felt like it wasn’t pushed. I felt like it wasn’t pushed correctly. She just didn’t get her just due as an artist of that magnitude.”
Jackson, who is currently on the road right now signed to Island Def Jam in 2007 and released Discipline, her first album (and only) on the label in February of this year. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, but sold less in its first week than Janet’s last two albums, 2006’s 20 Y.O. and 2004’s Damita Jo.
While there are also rumors of Janet possibly signing a deal with LiveNation, Rodney also made some hints as if Janet may be working on a new album when her tour wraps.
“I could make an album with her, possibly me, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis. Keep it real simple. They focus on what they’re great at, I focus on what I’m great at. We come together and make a classic Janet record.”
Good to see Janet shake herself from an unhappy situation, especially with the tour getting such rave reviews.

I don’t why legendary artist keep signing to Def Jam. They Have no Money!!! She’s right they did not push her. She need to go the Prince route and bring out HER own music w/o a major label. She can afford it

GOOD MOVE JANET!!!
AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED JANET CAN GO HER WHOLE LIFE WITHOUT MAKING ANOTHER ALBUM. SHE’S GOT NOTHING LEFT TO PROVE. I SAY SHE DOES MORE ACTING, OR TAKE HER MUSIC ACT TO THE STAGE FOR A MORE PERMANENT GIG. THIS TOUR IS SUPPOSED TO BE REAL GOOD, RIGHT NOW!!! SHE SHOULD GET A REGULAR SPOT IN VEGAS IMO! SHE WAS MADE FOR THE STAGE.
AMERIKKKA TRIED TO RUIN HER CAREER, YET LET MADONNA AND BRITNEY GET AWAY WITH PERFORMING A LESBIAN KISS ON STAGE???

Janet does need to do something like Vegas or LiveNation, and as much as I love Mimi she needs to do the samething.
For artists who have already left their mark, there is no point trying to compete with todays cookie cutter, shallow music industry. The industry now caters primarily to young children/teens who don’t care about older artists.
Personally if I were a singer I would love to do vegas, I dont get why legends/icons don’t jump at the chance.

I really do think Mariah needs to goahead and leave Def Jam also because her E=MC album should have done well like her Emancipation album but Def Jam is onlt worried about promoting half-singing stars like Rhianna and Neyo to the fullest. When they should be promoting the true icons.

I hope Beyonce is taking notes.
Janet is DONE! Nobody cares anymore. She did all of this before most of us were even born. Janet’s fake baby voice, the sexual “rediscovery” stuff, the 80’s style dancing productions, nobody cares anymore.
Even her boyfriend could not save her downward spiraling career. It’s time for her to stop with the stupid costumes and just have kids or something. Mariah is still around because she at least can sing. I won’t talk about what she sings about because I’m not a fan but she does have a voice. Ashanti is experiencing the same thing now.
People like Beyonce and others will soon come to the same place .
Get a real act and stop with the candy cotton pop. Nobody will be singing get me bodied in a year from now trust me.

Im very proud of Janet and her decision and i agree… they didnt push her album nor any of her singles and Discipline was a great album. Janet is a Music Legend before her.. there were no female pop stars in her vein… it amazes me to see and hear people say things like Janet needs to “Let it go” or “Give it up”… ARE YOU KIDDING!!!! Do you realize without Janet there would have been No Aaliyah, No Ciara.. hell NO BRITNEY for that matter!!!!!!!!! If Cher, Tina Turner and Madonna Can Tour and still put out records … so can Janet.. She deserves the same respect and honor as they do.. Madonna is still dropping albums that are hits and she’s 50!!!!!!!!! Janet Paved they way and opened many doors by doing what (at that time), hadn’t been done by a female artist…. Period… let alone a black one.
Janet is an ICON and deserves to be treated like so..
I hope for her continued success

cosign #32, I love how people compare this woman to the music with the dime a dozen records people put out today. Janet messed up when she start working with the producers she has, Darkchild included. She needs producers that are exclusive to her and get her.
I guess yall must be to young to remember when Janet was the end all be all! She is still the only artist to have 7 top ten singles (not even Beyonce could pull that off when she tried to do that with her last album, and she is the closest copy to Janet today, in terms of being an entertainer, not a vocalist.)

llet’s be real. That album was not up to much at all. Janet you need to be real and stop blaming the label and look at the root of the problem. Feedback sounded like a lite version of a filler track from one of her albums back in the day. Why do artists always blame the label when its the music that is the problem. Maybe janet could pull that if she was a new artist, but everybody and their momma knew when her album came out. She is a big enough artist to comand that, but the people knew it wwas out but just didn’t want to cop it. quit whining and make betters songs, or get out the business. It ’s like Usher blaming Benny Medina for his album flop. That album was one of the most hyped albums of the year, but it didn’t deliver, plain and simple. we are in a recession, ain’t no one gonna spend money on a weak product, especially if they can download it for free. Real talk.

Janet, stop blaming the record company! I love you, but you haven’t put out anything good since “The Velvet Rope.” Also get away from Jermaine Dupr, he has been the head of the urban divisions at the last two labels you have gone to, so if anyone botched your promotion it was him! Let me guess, he’s gonna leave Def Jam now because he didn’t promote your album well enough? L.A. took that album everywhere with him pupming you and Mariah, “Discipline” just wasn’t that great!
Janet Jackson (Miss Jackson if ya nasty)
Discipline (Def Jam Records)
Released February 26th, 2008
Billboard Album Debut #1 181,000 Copies Sold
Billboard Peak Hot 100 Single “Feedback” #19
Oh Janet, where oh where do we start? Janet Damita Jo Jackson is an icon. This woman has been a trailblazer in music since “Control” busted her out of Michael’s shadow. Every album after that was fire. Whether it was the political and social issues she addressed on “Rhythm Nation 1814,” the sexy but classy “Janet” or a combination of the two on “The Velvet Rope” each Janet album has always been distinct while still being able to convey who Janet was as an artist. Where did she go wrong? While “All For You” was still considered a commercial success that really is where she began to lose me. Sure we can blame it on the Superbowl fiasco, but truth be told “Damita Jo” was not a solid album. I don’t even want to go into the pain that was “20 Y.O” (I bought the deluxe edition even though I hated “Damita Jo”, and “20 Y.O.” now rests as a coaster on my coffee table). I was ready to love “Discipline.” She changed labels, was mixing it up with some new producers and “Feedback” was a pretty decent song. Then I listened to it, and again I was let down. That was strike 3 for Janet in my book. I listened to it about 6 times, and could still not get into it. The only song I could remember was “Luv” in addition to “Feedback.” Oh Janet.. I love you and will continue to support you, but “Discipline” just wasn’t the album to bring me back into the fold.
Outlook- Not very promising for this album. While Janet is touring to promote it, label support has pretty much come to a halt for the project. It likely won’t reach platinum status. Janet has also expressed her unhappiness with Def Jam (which she recently exited). It’s not all about commercial success, but everyone needs to get paid. On that note “Discipline” really isn’t an artistic breakthrough either. Some say she needs to go back to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Others say she should stay away from Jermaine Dupri.

She can blame it on the record label because it’s the record label that puts up the money to push the projects. Janet is the type of artist that needs strong label backing to push forward, meaning video budgets and promo, touring etc. Def Jam has used to new artists who are not really going to question their business moves because they are so happy to be signed in the first place. It’s not everyday an artist asks to be released from their contract. Def Jam would rather put funding behind Rhianna and Mariah, and that’s fine because Janet realizes their is another way to peddle her music without the help of a record label. The same thing Prince realized some years ago, and he still continues to tour and make new music. The music industry is constantly changing and soon record labels will have no power, people are downloading and bootlegging at alarming rates. Other outlets are available nowadays for any artist to make their music heard and be successful and I beleive Janet realizes that. Come on it’s Janet…October 5, 2008-PHILIPS ARENA CAN”T WAIT!!!!

Janet Jackson is the Most innovative Female (black) Entertainer in History, she is the Black Madonna.
