Kanye West closed this year’s MTV VMA’s with his new single from his upcoming album, the follow-up to 2007′s critically acclaimed, Graduation. The new single, “Love Lockdown” find Kanye West singing with auto-tune, a la T-Pain, with a simple drum kit and piano. I loved the energy of the song on the awards, and I love the organic feel of the studio version.
Although Kanye is a bit pitchy at times with his singing, I think that’s what makes the song. I almost wish that he’d taken it a step further and left the effects off of the vocal. I love what this sounds like though. I think the new album will be dope.
According to Amazon, Kanye’s new album is entitled 808′s & Heartbreak and is set for a December release.
this song is great, the emotion behind it and lyrics are moving, its raw and real and who cares its pitchy……i rather a song sang from the heart than a singer just singing words on a paper and the final product is autotuned to death (CASSIE)

I love kanye to death, but once again, i’m just not feeling this song. I know he’s trying to do something different, but it just seems off to me. I cant quite put my finger on it. But other than that i’m sick of this autotune/vocoder thing. I wish artists would stop dumbing their talent down (at least the ones who have it in the first place)

I’m with the majortiy on this it sounded pretty cool at the VMAs a few days ago, and even though I am beyond tired of auto tune I was really feeling it. But this version sounds a hot mess. I think Kanye should have given this song to a band like U2, Coldplay or R.E.M. minus the auto tune vocals. I think either of those bands would have nailed it and complimented the song better.

I’m just gonna be honest and say that this is not wut’s up. But I do commend Kanye for being different and trying a different direction… I’m just getting tired of the robot sounding vocals on everything…it’s making rappers become the singers they always wanted to be! LOL!

Controlling your voice, and knowing where to sing from helps pitch (diaphragm/head/throat), breath, and vibrato, which syllables to express or suppress, singing in front of a mic, are not things you are born with understanding… I have seen the most vocally talented artist get infront of a mic and f*ck it up, because they never “learned” how.
With that said. Yes, you can wake up and say, “I’m gonna sing”, especially when what you plan to sing is in “your tone” and “your range”. Like everything else in life, it just takes practice – go ahead ask Jan Smith what she thinks about that. I’m sure she will listen to the song and say, “he definitely could have sung that had he had some training”
Its all love though, the song’s soul to me is made corny by the use of the vocoder. It has the makings, but it falls short for me – esp. when as I said before, a person with his income, and his stature as an artist could afford vocal lessons LOL –
This is not to say that the song is wack – its not, and not that he has to be all perfect pitch with the sh*t, just that it could have been done better just by singing the damn song – think “Umi Says” by Mos Def, or Tsunami by Res, songs with soul from people who woke up and decided to sing
Also, Avril Lavign woke up and decided to sing as well LOL. Sh*t – so did Madona for that matter, apparently, its ok to sing naturally with a few f*ck ups here and there, as long as its you…

IMO the live version made me appreciate this version more. I like the sound. Of course he can’t sing but theres earnest, sincere in his voice. I like it.

I’m not sure what Kanyes strategy is with this song, and I think there is an audience out there for this one but to me it is not in line with some of the things I have heard from him that are more mainstream. There must be something bothering him, but he better get his d*** mind right because he is to talented to lose his leverage. I like this song, there’s something raw,organic and not too polished about it. I think that people talking about this whole t-pain autotune vocal effect isn’t as prominent as t-pain (or Kanye has a better voice) although i do prefer the version at the VMA’s

I aboslutely love this…..its amazing well not really amazing but the lyrics hit! They really make you think…i guess if your going through what he talking bout then you can reallly feel it for what it is and what he’s talkin bout…and i know i can. So i say its hott, on fire, its sick, this song has the flu!!lol,…alright im silly…but im really feelin it. Big ups to kanye for this…its different even tho he’s using auto-tune.
