NEWS ROUNDUP: GA EXECUTION STAYED / NASCAR OFFICIALS FIRED / BALTIMORE POLITICIAN MURDERED

Troy Anthony Davis said he was “thankful to God” after learning that his execution had been stayed when he saw it on television.

The U.S. Supreme Court granted a last-minute reprieve to the 39-year-old less than two hours before he was to be executed for the 1989 slaying of Mark MacPhail, an off-duty Savannah, Georgia, police officer.

Seven of the nine witnesses who initially testified that Davis was the killer had recanted. There was no physical evidence presented at his trial, and no weapon was found. But Davis’ petitions for a new trial had been denied. The U.S. Supreme Court was the last option for Davis to have his execution postponed.

NASCAR UPDATE

Tim Knox and Bud Moore, two NASCAR officials who had been suspended during an investigation in a $225 million racial discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit, have been fired.

Mauricia Grant, who worked as a technical inspector, accused Knox and Moore of exposing themselves to her and making lewd and graphic jokes. She alleged 23 specific incidents of sexual harassment and 34 specific incidents of racial and gender discrimination during the two years she worked for NASCAR.

Her suit also alleges she was fired as retaliation for complaining about the way she was treated by co-workers.

BALTIMORE POLITICIAN MURDERED

Former Balitmore city councilman Ken Harris was headed to the New Haven Lounge nightclub to visit the owner, a friend of his, when three masked men shot him in the chest in an apparent robbery attempt.

Police said the masked gunmen then entered the club and robbed owner Keith Covington and other employees before fleeing from the rear of the club as Covington fired shots at them.

Harris was a community organizer who started a program sending successful black men into city schools to talk about overcoming odds. He also ran unsuccessfully for city council president last year. He leaves behind his wife, Annette, and two children.

  1. Look at that face! That man ain’t kill nobody. I’m glad he got his stay & I hope it works out for him. The damn justice system.

Some men are disgusting, don’t know how to act around females. Damn Shame.

R.I.P. Ken. That is very sad.

  2. Starr

I’m happy to learn that they didn’t execute him, I was one of the many who wrote letters to stop that execution. Now they need to give him a new trial and justice needs to be served!

  3. thickems

    Thank God!
Here this man spent 17 years of his young life in jail b/c he was falsely accused. How do you get that time back when they finally and hopefully soon release him?

  4. Dame( No one on the corner has swagger like Dame)

R.I.P. Mr. Keith Covington that is sooo sad

  5. Big M

It goes without saying that our judicial system is badly broken. Support the’ Un-Equal Justice Fund’ (michaelbaisden.com). Too many of our men are behind bars and not with their families where they should be.

Glad to hear about Davis’ outcome, hopefully he will get a new trail. Way to go #2 (Starr) for being involved – this is the first I have heard about the case.

  6. James

Rest in Peace Ken Harris…One of Bmore’s Finest!

  7. Glade

What does a (hypothetical) god have to do with this criminal being given a second chance at life? Why does god care? Why should he care?

What always strikes me as odd is how these men end up in a scenario HOWEVER THE CASE to be accused of murder? Normal people don’t just get accused of murder, so he had to be doing something he didn’t have any got dang business doing. And now he wants to thank GOD?

Sorry man there are a lot of more pressing issues God could and should be addressing.

“Black people always seem to be taken by surprise and then cry “Lawd, Jesus help me!”, which isn’t a testimony of faith, but instead the braying of an ass.”

  8. Vee1

I hope this man does get a new trial, he obviously deserves one.

  9. Vee1

#7, I don’t know what kind of God you serve, burt I serve a loving and forgiving God. Gods thoughts and ways are way beyond anything we could ever comprehend. You don’t think he exist so you haven’t ever felt his power or his presence. You should seek him.

  10. NikkiMustSayIt

    This post saddens me :(

  11. kahmmillion

Damn, bro! I hope you do get a new trial….my prayers are with you. Especially if you are innocent. There are too many young black men in jail for crimes that they did not commit…just because they are black.

  12. Aja

    @ Glade

God is love, that’s why he should AND does care.
God is omnipresent; which means his is present everywhere addressing all types of issue – big or small.

And its not just ‘black’ people who call on the Lord when they need help, EVERYBODY makes mistakes and in dire situation they call on the Lord for help.

I guess we can all be ‘GLADE’ you’re NOT God.

  13. The Wayno Show

R.I.P. Ken Harris…you did a lot for the city of Baltimore. My condolences to his family at this sad time. Stop the violence!

  14. Lisa

What happen to Ken Harris is terrible. Our youth really needs some direction and better education. These senseless murders are just too much.

  15. @7,wow.i really feel bad for you…..

  16. DVYNEDVA

#4…Keith Covington didnt die…Ken Harris did…but nehu…i pray his family remainds strong during this time…
    - i hope justice is found with the NASCAR case…

-#1 – the sweet innocent 1s b the 1s tht slice n dice ppl up & use the blender 2 make a sauce out of the bodies & use the remains as a spagetti sauce & serve it 2 the new next door neighbors. the saying “dont judge a book by its cover” goes 4 the ppl who luk “nice” also.them b the 1s.I hope justice prevails but u cant jus say he dint do it.unless u kno like u know ur name is COMPLEXNDOPE…and if that is the case u dnt need 2 b on CL…u need 2 b at the courthouse makn sure he gets off…nehu…

  17. boombox

I try to warn the guys I know that the borderline-harassment comments they love to make will have them sittin somewhere, angry and jobless. They may not get fired today or tomorrow, but someone is keeping record and it looks a lot worse when you have 34 incidents against you. Good for Mauricia Grant! That type of mess has been going on forever so good for anyone who has the nerve to stand up to it.

I read about that Troy Anthony Davis situation last week. I hope he gets a new trial. Hell, I was surprised they granted him a stay. Thank God.

RIP to Ken Harris. I don’t know, whenever I hear about someone heavily involved in the community ending up dead, I just have to wonder if it wasn’t somethin deeper. Hope they find the murderers.

  18. U Gotta LovHer

One of the reasons why I don’t support Capital Punishment. If you put someone in jail for life and find out after some odd years they are innocent, at least they are still possibly alive to regain their freedom, but once you kill someone there is no coming back. This is such a sensitive topic especially to the families that are hurt, however, as “MAN” we do not have the right to take a life under any circumstances.

  19. PEEPLPAYATTENSHUN

THANKS FOR THE FOLLOW UP ON MAURICIA, I WAS WONDERING HOW THAT WAS GOING…

    RIP TO MR. KEN HARRIS

  20. AREUREGISTERED2VOTE?

I LIVE IN CHARLOTTE NC…I KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT NASCAR. ITS REDNECK BACKGROUND MESSES UP ANY DIVERSITY THEIR TRYING TO MAKE NOW. IF SHE WINS THAT LAWSUIT…ALOT MORE PEOPLE WILL GET FIRED.

  21. Choco

My heart goes out to the family of the slain politician…

  22. #17.

Though I can barely make out what you attempted to type. I will say this: I was being sarcastic. I heard about the story prior to this Concreteloop posting & hoped that he would get a fair trial.

  23. Tiff

@7 to answer your question about how can these men end up in a scenario where they are accused of murder

Well sadly all you have to do is be a black man!! Trust me it happened pretty often especially back in the day..My uncle spent his life and death in prison because some random white guy looked at him and simply said “it was him”..doesnt take much to get wrongly accused when you are black.in this case I believe Anthony Davis admitted that he was near the scene but had nothing to do with the killing..If he had nothing to do with the murder than he deserves a fair trial and should not have to serve the sentence for death. As for your statement about GOD, I think you should read the Bible and inform yourself more on Him before you make such strong statements

  24. dctrinigyal

I read about Troy situation two years ago…i added one of his family and friends supporting page on myspace just to see how this will go. I’m so glad you guys did this because i honestly forgot all about him. Thank god for this outcome….

  25. Tabby

I am getting a “Wire” vibe from the Ken Harris story.

  26. VIRGOANG3L

Justice doesn’t mean the bad guy goes to jail it just means someone pays for the crime.

  27. TiaMia

I received an email about this yesterday. There was no DNA or physical evidence against him. Georgia refused to reopen the case after the witnesses recanted, saying “it would cost too much.” Although different crime a crime is a crime and the ADMITTED email hacker who broke into Sarah Palin’s personal Yahoo email account and posted the private messages on the Internet will not be charged. And of course he is white.

    Anywho check me out

  28. cali panamami

i’m glad that the nascar case is progressing.

  29. *Sharonda J*

Incidents like that have caused me to lose faith in the system, especially for us(blk ppl) I have heard stories like this, time after time. I will keep him in my prayers! and I am thanking GOD too…despite what #7( who is entitled to their own opinion, but no bashing please!) has to say.

    **Nascar? not surprised. :/

So sad, R.I.P Mr. Harris! So glad u were able to have an impact on young African American men’s lives!

  30. Camille

I’m from Sav. GA that’s all ppl are talking about is this Troy Anthony Davis trial. If he is truly innocent he deserves a fair trial. He needed a miracle in his behalf and it came through by means of US Supreme court. I feel for both parties involved such a loss.

  31. sassydancer

justice finally in favor of a black man

  32. greta

Im glad GOD is a GOD OF ALL CHANCES and im glad Mr davis got a second chance i hope and pray everyting works out for him and for ken harris family I will pray for them in this time of Bereavement

  33. caper

in baltimore as in the rest of the cities in the US where black’s make up the majority it is getting pathetic. i sorry but I DON’T HAVE SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL. and it is down right lawless in these cities. and it seems that no one even cares the people in the higher gov’t positions just set back and enjoy black folks killing each other. this man was doing good for his community only to have his life taken by some evil entity then they get their ass down in prison and get religion. well thats up to you and god. but you continue to cause hell and wreak havoc on the streets. i don’t see these people getting blacklisted or blackballed. thats why i say SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT and black demise is on the way. just keep frocklicking and not coming to our scenes. memphis, philly, chi, detroit, you could go on and on. its frightening that people have reduced themselves to this level. and guess who is sitting back enjoying the show my white bro’s of the [cain descent]. he knows that we as blacks are on self-destruct. he knows we can’t always point the finger and blame at them all the time.

  34. ImHere4Myself

Very Unfortunate! This happened near Morgan State University. Hope that all of the students remain diligent about their safety on and near the campus.

  35. Christmas Jones

What happened to Ken Harris is amazingly devastating. His family and friends will mos def be in my thoughts and prayers. What is going on with our people? Can we at least spare our own??!!

  36. Toons

What happened to Troy happens everyday to black men except they actually get murdered. That’s how the judicial system was designed.

  37. La Maestra

I thought community organizers didn’t have real responsibilities? ….. Thats what Palin said…
My prayers to the family of Ken Harris

  38. Please Believe It!

This justice system is not set up for blacks. It’s set up for them (whites)! It’s their system, so why would any black people ever put faith in it or anything whites have control over? You’re wasting your time trying to integrate with them…it’ll lead to disappointment every time. The sooner black folks realize that the better off you’ll be!

  39. FallBackHaters

Damn I remember in high school we watched this docu about people on death row and what it was like for them and everyday just waiting to be killed, and 7 times out of ten their execution would get delayed so it was just crazy. To be in that frame of mind and know that you will soon be dying, like it’s a waiting game is scary.

  40. 7th grade pooh gets it right

i was hoping it wasnt a succesful black man

  41. JUDAH

Was the black woman surprised that she had these type of experiences in Nascar, lol? Most of these black women are experiencing this in corporate America everyday but they endure it because they have to live their “American Dream” and be “strong black women”. Whatever.

  42. Theworldwillendin2012

shit like this makes my really not 2 want 2 live in Baltimore.

  43. SasSy

Yeah.. I live in b more and this is really sad news. I mean u got someone that stood up to violence and look at the way he died. Its a mess, it really is. R.I.P KEN HARRIS.

  44. Hassan

This is to GLADE(u idiot), God doesn’t overlook anyone’s issue whether it be good or bad…The God that i know doesn’t not pick and choose which issue He wants to deal with….Get a Bible and gain some knowledge. its inexpensive

  45. Shag

Sounds more like a hit, than just a robbery. Out folks are dying in alarming numbers, nationwide.

  46. J*Marie

If there was no physical evidence presented at his trial, and no weapon was found to put Davis at the scene of the crime than he is NOT a criminal.

#7 you really need to READ what is written. As for the God statement, you believe what you want but God is a just God. Many people have the mis-understanding that God wants to save the world which is probably why you made your comment they way you did…However, I suggest you pick up the Bible and read carefully.

As for the issues that you think God needs to address…oh please believe he is addressing them. So like people on this post have been saying please pick up a Bible and READ before you make such rash, half-thought out comments…

  47. reginatlc4lyfe

I’m from Savannah, GA, and the alleged shooting happened a year after I was born, however, I didnt hear nothing about this recently. I am glad, they spared him from getting executed. I am off in college, I’m going to ask my parents if they heard anything on the news about it. Its sad, this man probably didnt even shoot the undercover cop and he doing time for nothing, almost 20 years.

  48. blindangel

Damn. I live across the street from New Haven Lounge in Baltimore. This Sad. It’s normally a college area. Nothing usually pops off here!

  49. Que?

Judah, gtfoh how many blk wm in general do you know who works in Co. America who blindly sits by and take any type harrassment, my guess is none since its obvious you have a personal agenda against blk women this is a women who came forward about her situation but you know what Im shocked at some blk wm too mainly at how they stand behind fools like you who spew the rhetoric and hate towards them and then when your locked up whos the one defending you. But some of the things you say is just laughable to see like d@mn, a blk wm must of hurt you really bad to just hate the whole lot of them.

I am so very blessed that we have people like you around still, from day to day we take for granted just how blessed we are to wake up in our right minds and what I mean by that is it is apparent that you did not wake up in yours. From what I can tell you have to be getting a kick out of your statement and what everyone thinks because you have not had a thing to say after it so all I will say is I will most defiantly keep you in my prayers that the Lord that I have come to know will give you an overwhelming peace about who he is!!!!!

  51. MISIDATCHICK

GOOD FOR THE GIRL IN THE NASCAR SITUATION I WAS WONDERING WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT REMEMBER IT WAS ON CONTINUOUS LOOP ON ESPN. GOOD FOR THE GA GUY AS WELL.
