NEWS ROUNDUP: MANY WON’T LEAVE HURRICANE’S PATH / MOST POWERFUL WOMEN / SPELMAN’S ANONYMOUS DONATION / BOEING DONATES $1M TO MLK MEMORIAL
Monday, September 1, 2008
As of Monday, Hurricane Gustav is 85 miles from New Orleans and currently has winds up to 115 mph. Close to 95% of New Orleans residents have been evacuated to safe places, but they are a select few who aren’t leaving.
CNN’s Gary Tuchman reports on a New Orleans man who has a sad and startling reason for staying in town.
WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN

Forbes recently released its list of the world’s 100 most powerful women.
Condoleezza Rice, the seventh most powerful woman, tops the list as the most powerful black woman in the world.
Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A. is No. 22 on the list. She is Chief Executive and President of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the largest health care foundation in the United States. Media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who was ranked 21st last year is No. 36 this year. Xerox President Ursula Burns is No. 55. Last year’s 100th most powerful woman, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia, is No. 66 this year. In 2006, Johnson-Sirleaf became the first democratically elected female president in Africa.
SPELMAN’S ANONYMOUS $17M DONATION

An anonymous donor gave $17 million to strengthen and expand international programs at Spelman College.
The Gordon-Zeto Endowed Fund for International Initiatives, named after Nora A. Gordon, C’1888, the first Spelmanite to teach in the Congo and Flora E. Zeto, C’1915, one of the first Congolese to graduate from Spelman will be used to infuse the curriculum, campus environment and extracurricular offerings with an international component.
According to Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of Spelman, “In the context of an increasingly global economy and a world made smaller by technology, it is more important than ever that students, faculty and staff are prepared for active engagement with the international community. This generous gift will help expand our global emphasis, ensuring that we remain competitive in a ‘flat world’.”
BOEING DONATES $1M TO MLK MEMORIAL

James Bell, corporate president, chief financial officer and executive vice president of Boeing announced that the company will donate $1 million toward building a lasting memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Harry Johnson Sr., the foundation’s president and CEO, announced, “As a result of the generous donation by Boeing, the Memorial Foundation has reached the $100 million fundraising mark and we continue to move forward with excitement as we set forth to raise the remaining $20 million needed to build the memorial.”

I so WISH I could tell that man from New Orleans that his wife would want him to leave and to survive. When you love someone like that they only want you to be happy. The dead doesn’t want you to celebrate their DEATH but their LIFE. The reporter was not prepared to speak to that man’s spirit. He was so thrown off by that man’s love for his wife he was just in awe.

Dame nice tag name. I agree with you all.
Let’s hope God gets New Orleans and other areas through this one because FEMA is still not prepared and neither are the politicians who run Louisana or any other state that was devastated by Katrina. We can bomb the world and sink money in a pretend war but we cannot afford to secure and rebuild the homes of US citizens –anyone else annoyed by that–Obama 08.
AS FOR THE SPELMAN DONATION THAT IS WONDERFUL, but there are other colleges that need similar help and can anyone explain why African, Carribbean or African American studies is not a mandatory minor or major for all students who attend black universities. I am just asking because I attended a white uni, achieved a BA in Poli Sci and Afr Amer Studies. I ask because when I engage many who have graduated from HBCUs they have no frame of reference for black history other the typical points in most history. Like many have never heard of the book “”From Slavery to Freedom which is a great reference guide of Black History in America. Anyway just a question.
FORBES MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN, NICE I hope Pulian doesn’t get on the list next year with the affirmative action b.s. move the republicans pulled, she is so not worthy. As a woman I am offended, but white women never have to accomplish as much, before they are shown the brass ring. If that was a sister she would have had to accomplish Condi’s career first.
Obama 08 ladies and gentlemen dont be bamboozled.

We definitely need more donations like these at our other HBCU’S. We have too many notable alumni to be suffering the way we are.

Though I am happy about my fellow sister school receiving 17 mil…my alma mater, Clark Atlanta University, which is literally across the street from Spelman, is suffering! I don’t understand why people/organizations continually give to schools such as Spelman and Morehouse, when they don’t really need it. It would be nice if other suffering HBCUs received generous donations too!!!

Though its sad to see a video like that, the donations made to Spelman and MLK memorial show progress that we desperately need in our communities.

#7: I graduated from Spelman in ‘04 and all freshman are required to take a course entitled “African Diaspora and the World” which covers a wide range of issues relevant to people of African Descent around the world as well as our history. Also, our curriculum, especially the humanities, places special emphasis on black culture and black issues. I can’t speak for all black colleges however. The decision to attend a black college was the best choice I have made so far in my life….I will get down off of my soap box now.
I wish Spelman had received this donation when I was there, I have always been interested in International relations……this reminds me, its time to give my annual donation…..

As a proud Spelman alumna (2007), I am very elated to be informed of this news. On the contrary, it very hurtful to be reminded of the devastation that the people had to endure from the effects of hurricane Katrina. It’s hard to mentally digest the lives that were lost due to ignorance, and pride (President Bush not accepting help from other countries).

That’s awesome that Spelman wants a bigger and better international program. I think one of the key things missing from HBUCs (and the main reason why I never went to one) is the lack of diversity. I don’t care what anyone says but HBUCs are diverse BUT in ONE culture. That’s not how the rest of the world works so I’m happy they want to improve that flaw and spread diversity. I also agree w/ #7 because I live in MD and I know many ppl who go (or went) to Howard and haven’t the slightest clue of A.A. history besides what they see on TV and learnt in HS.

Speaking of Martin Luther King Jr.
Selma - Paul Webb’s historical drama following the story of “Martin Luther King Jr.’s campaign to convince President Lyndon Johnson to enact the voting rights act and the march from Selma to Montgomery that came as a consequence.” Christian Colson is producing for Celador Films with Brad Pitt’s Plan B. Selma is expected to start filming in early 2009.

FYI

I attended a HBUC and I can tell you it more than prepared me for the world. There are so many cultures within the black race (american, african, caribbean) and it was important for me to experience that. Going to one or the other really doesn’t matter… it all prepares you for the world. I currently live in Colorado Springs, CO …. can’t get more diverse than that and I didn’t have a hard time adjusting. As an HBUC student my school exposed and educated me on the realities of working/living in America as a black woman . So it all depends on the person and what you’re trying to get out of your college experience.
P.S I also was a grad student at NYC and I enjoyed the experience as well.

My eyes started tearing so badly while I was watching the CNN story, you could tell
that he wishes he could be with her. Lots of times when you love someone that much
and they leave, you don’t want to live anymore either. My prayers are with him and I hope that God eases the pain in his heart so that he can find some measure of happiness.
