NEWS ROUNDUP: OPRAH PLEDGES $1M SCHOLARSHIP / PHILLY COUNCILMAN’S CAR VANDALIZED / KILPATRICK UPDATE
Tuesday, September 2, 2008

As the keynote speaker at the 20th Reunion Festival in Whitesboro, New Jersey, Oprah Winfrey pledged $1 million to an educational scholarship fund for the community’s youth.
With boyfriend Stedman Graham at her side, she noted how he talked about his hometown of Whitesboro when they began dating and how he wanted the town to be all it could be. She said he worked to get sidewalks, street lights, a baseball field and a community center built there.
“I’m committed to help him help this community. Today I’m contributing $220,000 as my first installment in a $1 million plan for the educational scholarship fund of Whitesboro. Keep dreaming ladies and gentlemen, keep dreaming,” Winfrey said.
PHILLY COUNCILMAN’S CAR VANDALIZED

Philadelphia City Councilman Darrell Clarke walked out of his home and found the letters “KKK” and a swastika spray-painted on the hood of his Infiniti G35. His city-owned Crown Victoria was not touched.
“I was obviously disturbed. Not just that it had been vandalized, but the type of vandalism on the vehicle really disturbed me. We’re all talking about unifying the country and unifying as a people. And in 2008, you still have this type of incident happening,” said Councilman Clarke.
A few blocks away, the brother of one of Clarke’s aides also had his car spray painted with the same type of hate graffiti. Then a third car, unrelated to the councilman, was also hit. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said it appears that these were not random acts. “These are people who know exactly who they’re targeting.”
KILPATRICK UPDATE

Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick would plead guilty to at least two felonies, pay a six-figure restitution and agree not to run for office for two years under a plea deal offered by his lawyers to settle perjury and obstruction of justice charges.
Kilpatrick would automatically lose the mayor’s office and his law license. He would also sign over his state pension and benefits to the City of Detroit, do 300 hours of community service with homeless and disabled people and serve up to five years probation. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, however, hasn’t accepted the deal because she wants him to serve time in jail.
A judge is expected to rule Tuesday whether Gov. Jennifer Granholm can proceed with a hearing on Wednesday to remove the mayor.

That’s good that Stedman wants to help his childhood community. I heard a story about Stedman’s town that the Blacks in the community who were light-skinned and didn’t wanted to “mess up” the look co-mingled within their families to keep the light complexion thing going. I don’t know if this true but heard the story. But nonetheless it is nice of him to take an interest in his hometown.

@7, Obviously you’re not from or around the City and followed the “real case” otherwise you wouldn’t have made such an ignorant so I’ll just say google is a great tool.
That was nice of Oprah.
That’s messed up what happened to the Councilman’s car but I suspect we’ll be hearing more stories like this soon. The ppl in the cheap white sheets should really stop hiding and come out from behind their linen threads to show who they really are. Now that would be news, oh and stop spray painting cars, that is so tacky!!
Kwame and his ppl are proposing every deal under the sun except one that involves jail time because after all the ish he’s done, he doesn’t want to serve time. He’s one funny dude!

Kilpatrick….a disgrace that somehow becomes more and more disgraceful as time goes on - how convenient of he and his law team to suggest such a ridiculous plea deal. From day 1 he claimed his innocence, now all of a sudden he wants to avoid jail time! Please….do the time fake a$# Gerald LeVert!

Kilpatrick is shameful. He did that one day in jail and know he’s not “THUG” enough to do more than that, yet, he’s been running around the city like the Teflon Don, killing and threatening folks and their families! Shoving women and intimidating people. Prison has broken many of hard heads, and he’s no exception. Fat losers, i hope Kym sticks with her guns and give him prison time.

How the fuck do 2 felonies=no jail time?? Kwame needs to man up and serve his time. I’m not from detroit, but I would be pissed at my tax dollars being wasted on his ass. He is an embarrassment and needs to learn some humility.
