♫ ALBUM REVIEW: JOHN LEGEND – EVOLVER

johnlegend_promo.jpg

John Legend releases his third studio album, Evolver tomorrow, October 28th. It seems as though this time John has decided to step from behind the piano, and show that he can dabble in some electronic elements for his third studio effort…

LISTEN UP:

I was super siked when I heard that Legend would be teaming with Kanye West, who he’s worked with before, as well as Andre 3000 and The Neptunes for his new album. And when the snippet of the lead single, “♫ Green Light” leaked, I was extremely excited. It was slightly reminiscent of the work that Andre 3000 had done with Gwen Stefani as Johnny Vulture on her Love. Angel. Music. Baby. LP, which I had fallen in love with back in 2004. It seemed that they were keeping the project under wraps because not much material leaked until the full album dropped, which I think was good. Legend managed to experiment with some interesting new sounds that he’s never showed us before on previous albums, while not straying away from what made his old fans love him in the first place.

On Evolver, Legend is very open vocally. His delivery is pretty much immaculate, sailing in and out of his falsetto to this throaty notes that we’ve come to love so much for him. Although “Green Light” isn’t a huge undertaking, it was pop enough to gain him some new fans, without alienating old ones.

In addition to teaming with Andre for the album, Evolver boasts features from Kanye West on the album’s second single, “It’s Over,” which has a nice midtempo, lanced with lovely horns and drums, as well as his first signee, British sensation Estelle. He also collaborates with Brandy, on the unexpected “Quickly,” which has got to be one of my favorite tracks from the album. Other stand-out tracks include “Everybody Knows,” “Satisfaction,” “Good Morning,” and the beautiful ballad, “I Love, You Love.”

It’s good to see that John can experiment with different sounds and still put out a solid album, because in this day and age, you have to be versatile in order to not get pigeon-wholed or stuck into a box.

Show John Legend some love on his MySpace page, and make sure you pick up your copy of Evolver when it hits stores tomorrow, October 28th!

  7. Typical Brian Review

I was sipping on my decaf mocha latte one morning and heard the sweet sounds of John Legend and Andre 3000 coming through the stereo. I immediately felt that this was John’s greatest work ever. I was so happy and joyous. Positively giddy.

Why are these reviews always about Brian? Hmmm?

Include some production credits, writers, tracklist. Information that we’d like to know and less about who you fell in love with back in 2004.

    Please and thank you.

  8. Booyall

I think this album may be pretty good. His other albums always make me go to sleep! Green Light is my jam!

  9. Schizodefective

Police have confirmed the body is JHUD’s nephew.

How on earth anyone could do that to a child.

    Sad times.

  10. Iron Lion Zion

Brandy and John Legend work well together as a duet. But there is no denying that Brandy makes that song what it is. She kills those vocals.

  11. MINDYOURBIZNESS

I might go cop that 2mar!

  12. Alyse

i love his song good morning!

  17. Scooby

The album is so-so, favorite track is definitely the one with Brandy and I agree she makes the song!

  18. KSH

I love John! Greenlight is on constant repeat in the car. John has done something wonderful – often overlooked he is a great artist.

He & Jazmine Sullivan have done great things with their music

  19. power

#4 please stick to the topic. We are talking music not his sexuality whether he is gay or not CD is banging. Does that take away from his music and talent? Shallow fool!

  20. Lili

    whats goin on with CL

  21. Ladyssolady

#8, I agree w/you, but I absolutely love ‘Good Morning’!

This is a post on John Legend…which means that we can discuss anything from his Music, style, personal life etc. When I saw the post the first thing that came to mind was him hiding his sexuality. I just think its a shame that homosexual black celeb hide their sexuality (John, Maxwell, Luther, Tyler Perry) but its so kool for whites to be out (Ellan, elton john, Lance).

I dont care how good his music is im not listening becuz he is fake.

  23. Yumyo

I do not find this man attractive, my husband takes the cake.

However, I can never complain about this man music. Just plain ol’ awesome.

  24. Greatestloveofall (Stop focusing on Beyonce/Rihanna feud but remember to vote for OBAMA)

The song with Brandy is AMAZING damn!

  25. LetMeTryAgain

I WILL be getting this CD tomorrow….Green Light sounds so good in the club (I’m a bartender) and a AWESOME way to get folks out of the club at closing time…”I’M READY TO GO RIGHT NOW!!!!”..LOL

  26. MAYHEM

“it’s over” is a banger. whole album is solid. this has been leaked for weeks. i don’t know where some of you have been.

  27. ReBeL

Album is nice but I think his last album had my attention more… I’ll always be a John fan tho…

  28. Ladycole

really looking forward to this album

  29. ReBeL

#23 How you gon call those men out as gay? You don’t know what they do behind closed doors. It’s funny how you named mostly singers and not none of these thugged out rappers.

  30. Mr. West Coast!

    Quickly Is a SMAASSSHHH!!!!!!

  31. PEEPLPAYATTENSHUN

NEVER COPPED THE FIRST ALBUM, BUT AGAIN IS MY SHIZNIT!

STILL NOT FEELIN THE BRANDY SONG BUT THE OTHER TRACKS ARE WHAT’S UP… I KNOW I’LL BE SMASHIN TO “I LOVE YOU LOVE”

  32. kaykay

hey #7 go get your reviews elsewhere if you don’t want to hear the context in which Bri wants to discuss these records! mkay? stop actin like his reviews ain’t been like this for years-if you already know you’re not going to like it then skip it, don’t b*tch about it-ain’t nobody forcing you to read ‘em. anywho, John Legend is SO talented…Greenlight sounded real familar to me but it’s a nice song-I’m sure the album will be great although i doubt i’ll buy it-I’m glad he’s not leakin’ all over the place, it’s kinda tacky and gratuitous(sp) these days imo.

  33. PEEPLPAYATTENSHUN

    @ # 7

LMAOOOOOO!!!!!!! DID HE REALLY SAY THAT?!

TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL!

  34. pytjd

im actually kinda disappointed. i heard some tracks last week and they were not what i expected. they sounded more like the second cd, which was ok but put me to sleep with the lack of passion in his voice. some of the songs are ok. i guess get lifted was such a good cd that i was hoping this one would be more of a return to that type of soulful passion. ill take another listen and maybe it’ll grow on me

  35. crunkpoet

its an all right album..better than the 2nd one but i really dont like it..John has nice albums but they are all snooze fests!

  36. Khalea

I’m buying this on iTunes tomorrow and I can’t wait to hear it! I’m the biggest JL fan…

  37. Jdwceo101

Not a bad album at all … feelin a lot of the tracks not as much as the one with him and Brandy which should be his next single cause Brandys vocals are insane!

  38. MichelleB

John Legend’s music is a big part of the reason me and my fiance are getting married! My fiance proposed to me with a gorgeous diamond engagement ring from http://www.idonowidot.com during a John Legend concert. So I can’t wait to get this album and play the tunes at our upcoming wedding!

  42. lilblackfan[needs an internship]

    i’m so excited:D

  43. Lili

    @ 30

I cant call any thugged out rapper gay becuz honestly I do not know that any of them are gay for a fact, of course I have my preceptions on who I think is gay, but I know for FACT that John and the guys that I named are homos, thats why I made the comment

  44. Gerri'

I love what i’m hearing thus far! I must get the album tomorrow. He and Brandy worked very well together, that beat is the business.

  45. ReBeL

So you know for a fact they are gaty because you’ve seen them fuckin a man? Or because they are not as masculine as some men?

  46. Lili

@ 46, WIth out getting into too much details…I have friends in the industry who work closely with celebs. You dont have to see someone fucking another guy to know that they are gay. And my comment have nothing to do with them not being masculine becuz I dont think any of them are flamboyant/fem with the exception of tyler and maxwell maybe.

  47. Blkmarilyn

I am loving that Quickly Song, John is doing it again, no pun intended.

  48. t1w2000

Midi Mafia Is killin on this John and Brandy track….I can’t stop Listening! Ya’ll just better do my gurl Fantasia right! LOL! I’m still in Luv with When I See You! But this Quickly is so damn smooth…..I luv me some good music! Brandy brings that special thing to all the duets she has been on! You can’t deny her skillz! John man I was not think about your album, but Green Light the Estelle and Kanye track I see what you doin! LOL! I ain’t mad. Don’t hurt um. Neyo is still my favorite male artist album as of yet….we will see tomorrow if your tough competition!

    *Does Maino hand wave*

Will cop regardless of his personal life, at least of ain’t getting his R. Smelly on, dig?

  50. Ra-Ra

At #4, what does his muscial ability have to do with whether or not he’s gay? Who cares? Prince and Michael Jackson’s sexual orientation has always been in question, but they’re musical geniuses nonetheless. George Michael and Elton John are openly gay men, but they’re great musicians. Whether or not John Legend is or isn’t gay is irrelevant, because you’re not going to marry him either way.

  51. johnrocks

I was able to hear a sneak peek of the CD and can promise that fans will love this new one!

  52. sure thing

I love the It’s over track with Kanye West, it has a throwback loop somewhere thats too cool.I like John Legend his music is unique. I dont care for rumours As long as he is not sleeping with underage girls I am cool.

  53. Toriano aka John Legend

John Legend makes the music that I hear in my head…soul, R&B, gospel, rock, blues and fuses all of those genres together. There is not a single song he has released that doesn’t captivate me in some way.

Many call him mellow, some even use the adjective, lethargic, when describing his music. I call him pure genius. His melodies, his voice, the arrangements, and the lyrics – each element is a signature characteristic of his craft.

Evolver is a fresh, contemporary approach to the way John makes music. The album is alot of fun, without sacrificing quality.

I love “Quickly”. I cant say how much I love what Brandy does with her voice.

“I Love, You Love”, is a stunning ballad. If you have ever been afraid to love again you definitley can relate.

  56. Nix

Great Review! I just got my copy from Circuit City. They give a free John Legend “Evolver” Polo shirt when you get it there. I listened to most of it in the car, I like it a lot. I loved “Get Lifted” but I like this one a lot, it’s worth the money.

  57. simone
