♫ ALBUM REVIEW: JOHN LEGEND - EVOLVER ♫
Monday, October 27, 2008

John Legend releases his third studio album, Evolver tomorrow, October 28th. It seems as though this time John has decided to step from behind the piano, and show that he can dabble in some electronic elements for his third studio effort…
I was super siked when I heard that Legend would be teaming with Kanye West, who he’s worked with before, as well as Andre 3000 and The Neptunes for his new album. And when the snippet of the lead single, “♫ Green Light” leaked, I was extremely excited. It was slightly reminiscent of the work that Andre 3000 had done with Gwen Stefani as Johnny Vulture on her Love. Angel. Music. Baby. LP, which I had fallen in love with back in 2004. It seemed that they were keeping the project under wraps because not much material leaked until the full album dropped, which I think was good. Legend managed to experiment with some interesting new sounds that he’s never showed us before on previous albums, while not straying away from what made his old fans love him in the first place.
On Evolver, Legend is very open vocally. His delivery is pretty much immaculate, sailing in and out of his falsetto to this throaty notes that we’ve come to love so much for him. Although “Green Light” isn’t a huge undertaking, it was pop enough to gain him some new fans, without alienating old ones.
In addition to teaming with Andre for the album, Evolver boasts features from Kanye West on the album’s second single, “It’s Over,” which has a nice midtempo, lanced with lovely horns and drums, as well as his first signee, British sensation Estelle. He also collaborates with Brandy, on the unexpected “Quickly,” which has got to be one of my favorite tracks from the album. Other stand-out tracks include “Everybody Knows,” “Satisfaction,” “Good Morning,” and the beautiful ballad, “I Love, You Love.”
It’s good to see that John can experiment with different sounds and still put out a solid album, because in this day and age, you have to be versatile in order to not get pigeon-wholed or stuck into a box.
Show John Legend some love on his MySpace page, and make sure you pick up your copy of Evolver when it hits stores tomorrow, October 28th!

Typical Brian Review
Monday, October 27, 2008 /
I was sipping on my decaf mocha latte one morning and heard the sweet sounds of John Legend and Andre 3000 coming through the stereo. I immediately felt that this was John’s greatest work ever. I was so happy and joyous. Positively giddy.
————————————————————————————-
Why are these reviews always about Brian? Hmmm?
Include some production credits, writers, tracklist. Information that we’d like to know and less about who you fell in love with back in 2004.
Please and thank you.

Brandy and John Legend work well together as a duet. But there is no denying that Brandy makes that song what it is. She kills those vocals.

This is a post on John Legend…which means that we can discuss anything from his Music, style, personal life etc. When I saw the post the first thing that came to mind was him hiding his sexuality. I just think its a shame that homosexual black celeb hide their sexuality (John, Maxwell, Luther, Tyler Perry) but its so kool for whites to be out (Ellan, elton john, Lance).
I dont care how good his music is im not listening becuz he is fake.

hey #7 go get your reviews elsewhere if you don’t want to hear the context in which Bri wants to discuss these records! mkay? stop actin like his reviews ain’t been like this for years-if you already know you’re not going to like it then skip it, don’t b*tch about it-ain’t nobody forcing you to read ‘em. anywho, John Legend is SO talented…Greenlight sounded real familar to me but it’s a nice song-I’m sure the album will be great although i doubt i’ll buy it-I’m glad he’s not leakin’ all over the place, it’s kinda tacky and gratuitous(sp) these days imo.

im actually kinda disappointed. i heard some tracks last week and they were not what i expected. they sounded more like the second cd, which was ok but put me to sleep with the lack of passion in his voice. some of the songs are ok. i guess get lifted was such a good cd that i was hoping this one would be more of a return to that type of soulful passion. ill take another listen and maybe it’ll grow on me

@ 46, WIth out getting into too much details…I have friends in the industry who work closely with celebs. You dont have to see someone fucking another guy to know that they are gay. And my comment have nothing to do with them not being masculine becuz I dont think any of them are flamboyant/fem with the exception of tyler and maxwell maybe.

At #4, what does his muscial ability have to do with whether or not he’s gay? Who cares? Prince and Michael Jackson’s sexual orientation has always been in question, but they’re musical geniuses nonetheless. George Michael and Elton John are openly gay men, but they’re great musicians. Whether or not John Legend is or isn’t gay is irrelevant, because you’re not going to marry him either way.

John Legend makes the music that I hear in my head…soul, R&B, gospel, rock, blues and fuses all of those genres together. There is not a single song he has released that doesn’t captivate me in some way.
Many call him mellow, some even use the adjective, lethargic, when describing his music. I call him pure genius. His melodies, his voice, the arrangements, and the lyrics - each element is a signature characteristic of his craft.
Evolver is a fresh, contemporary approach to the way John makes music. The album is alot of fun, without sacrificing quality.

Great Review! I just got my copy from Circuit City. They give a free John Legend “Evolver” Polo shirt when you get it there. I listened to most of it in the car, I like it a lot. I loved “Get Lifted” but I like this one a lot, it’s worth the money.
