♫ ALBUM REVIEW: MICHELLE WILLIAMS - UNEXPECTED ♫
Monday, October 6, 2008

Former Destiny’s Child bandmate Michelle Williams had already released two solo albums, but in a genre in which the other members hadn’t tapped into. Now, she’s back, with a more contemporary album, where she dabbles into dance, pop and a little bit of electronica, with her third solo set, Unexpected, due out October 7th.
When I first heard that Michelle would be departing from her gospel solo career, I was a little worried. What was she going to talk about? What was the music going to sound like? Even though she started off as an R&B artist with Destiny’s Child, I just wasn’t sure what she what type of sound she could possibly go for on this album. A snippet of a Stargate/Ne-Yo-sounding song entitled “♫ Stop This Car” (which did make the album) leaked, and I gained confidence in Michelle’s solo project. But I was even more pleasantly surprised by her official first single, “♫ We Break the Down” when it dropped back in April.
The album took an entirely different direction than what I expected… hence the album title, Unexpected. Despite a few minor setbacks (Michelle’s video was not given airplay on BET because it wasn’t “urban enough,” the month-long album push-back, and the entire album finding it’s way online a month before it’s release), Michelle has stayed humble, excited and wide-eyed about this new project, which finds her experimenting with a lot of pop and dance sounds with Jim Jonsin and Rico Love.
I think the sound suits Michelle’s voice. The album’s gems include the pulsating dance-club banger, “Hello Heartbreak,” the intoxicatingly spastic “Hungover,” as well as “The Greatest” and the Brandy-inspired “Thank You.” Despite my doubts, Michelle really did manage to put out a solid effort, with a cohesive sound that differentiates her from her former bandmates Beyonce and Kelly, as well as other signees to the Music World imprint.
Show Michelle some love on her MySpace page, and make sure you pick up your copy of Unexpected when it hits stores October 7th!

I LOVE MICHELLE!! So many people to so much shit about her but they don’t really listen to her music and know her at all. I’m really feeling the track..”The Greatest”..it’s such a nice song although, it isn’t new. I’ve had it on my iPod longer than Rihanna was jocking FeFe.

I’m glad MusicWorld actually put some effort into Michelle’s album. Michelle better promote the hell out of this album before Bey’s album drops on November 18. After this happens, no one will give Michelle any play or attention.

After this Michelle should bounce Matthew. Matthew aint thinking about Michelle right now when his cash cow is releasing and album, a deluxe album, two videos, two singles on same day, world tour in 5 months, and so on.

I have all of Michelle’s gospel cd’s. I love her voice because it’s just really pure - it has such a clear resonance to it. However, I just don’t feel like it serves this music - the harsh beats clash with her voice.
“The Greatest” is the best of the tracks Brian posted because Michelle’s voice rides that beat. Unfortunately, her voice sounds downright shrill on that “Hungover” track because it clashes with the beat.
I wish Michelle all the best, and will looking forward to her NEXT gospel CD.

Now I have already heard every track on the album and am more than pleased. I love her and really rooting for her to go all the way despite the fact that the album released date was pushed back. She had worked hard and I hope to God that the album sells so that she can shove the numbers directly up Mathew Knowles’s ass!

I wish her much success, she deserves it, but at the same time her and Kelly has to obviously be in a TIGHT contract with the Knowles’. Because by now i feel they would’ve been gone….but if they stayed at that record label to recieve the same treatment they’ve been getting for years now then that makes them stupid…seriously. I’m pretty sure they’ll leave once their contract is up..

Ok ya’ll…..let’s keep it real-Michelle should have stuck with gospel because on the pop scene she sounds like a Chipmunk in training. This entire album sounds like it should be featured on kidzbop! I heard the whole thing today on aolmusic and was not at all impressed. From a recording industry perspective, an album like this is going to FLOP without exceptional marketing and promotion! Many of the songs are good, but the way she approaches each song, they all wind up sounding exactly alike vocally, which makes her more on the level of miley cyrus and hillary duff and as an almost 30 year old woman, that is DISAPPOINTING to say the least. While I do agree that Mathew Knowles should have done more in terms of promotion for Kelly and Michelle, Beyonce’ is at a point in her career where her name sells itself! So yes, she is the cash cow of Music World, and though we can hate on her daddy for jacking up the solo careers of the other former D.C. members, Bey is beyond “pop star” status. Kelly could do very well for herself with the right material and new management. As for Michelle, well, I don’t even know what to say about her. This album was a bad idea. You can’t pull a “Madonna” album stunt before you reach “Madonna’s” level in the game. She needed to come harder than this. This is “Unaccepted”!

I think Kelly and Michelle have themselves to blame 100% for their albums not getting enough attention/no hit records/no TV or radio promotion. They think Matthew really gives a s**t about them. No offence, they should cut their losses and move on to somewhere that’ll give them the right promotion.
And I hate to say it—neither of them have the star quality of Beyonce. It’s the same for pretty much all major R&B girlbands from some point in time. It’s either that one of them gets more attention during their time in the group, or they’re more talented, or they might go solo and become a huge star on their own.
All these women fit into at least one of the above categories:
-Beyonce in Destiny’s Child (obviously all three criteria).
-Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in TLC (while she never broke through as a solo artist, she was generally always considered to be the most notable member of TLC. She was the “Crazy” in “CrazySexyCool”, and the public caught onto that).
-Dawn Robinson in En Vogue (didn’t make it solo, plus all those girls could sing, BUT she was definitely seen as their star. They kinda fell off after she quit. They have been performing together again though in the last couple years, including at VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors).
-Coko in SWV (again never made it big solo, but was their lead and pretty much overshadowed Taj and LeeLee, even though they were good singers too. Wonder if they’ll sing again, after their appearance at this year’s BET Awards).
-And OF COURSE—Diana Ross in the Supremes (goes without saying).

If it weren’t for the black media web sites, I would not have known about Michelle Williams releasing an album. It is sad, no promotion at all. She needs to get new management. Matthew Knowles is only going to look out for his daughters. Just watch when Beyonce drops her new singles and albums. Promotion and media blitz to the hills.
I just hope that all of the secrecy surrounding Beyonce’s new CD is worth all of the hype.
22.
is it really mathew's fault?
Monday, October 6, 2008 /
Okay and if Chelle and Kelly seek new managment… whats next? they can risk never being heard or seen ever. Mathew may be bussing his ass! but, they may not be easy to sell. on the other hand B is sold while on vacay the offers roll in. why must b have to shut herself down so her bandmates can breath?

I have to say……Out of all of DC I like Michelle Williams the best!
She came into the group was a little unsure of herself and now look at her.
Her voice is different and she has some good Gospel CD’s out.
She works hard and is not always in front of the camera and she looks good.
I wish her luck with the CD. It’s funny how Beyonce can’t fall back and allow others to shine but it’s not a shock.

LOL-I didn’t want to be the one to say it because I don’t want to sound “stan-nish”, but even if Mathew Knowles busted his @$$ promoting their albums, Michelle and Kelly would NEVER be as big as Beyonce’! She is the ultimate superstar and has that “it” factor that just doesn’t flow naturally from the other two. So nah, it’s not 100% Mathew’s fault-although I did think it was SUPER whack that Michelle’s album was pushed back so Solange’s could come out and shine on its own. Yes, a management change would probably damage the personal and professional relationships these two have with the Knowles family, but they can’t be TOO unhappy because they have yet to walk away. Contractually, they probably can’t anyway!

i agree with #19 & 20 she need to stick with gospel
i get so tired of artists going back and forth between r&b and gospel
have anybody notice how dc always had a gospel song on the end of their cds and now beyonce don’t even have a gospel song on the end of her two solo cds- i think kelly didn’t either
i think i’ll buy her album just because I know it’s not going to do well -poor thing

did chelle get pushed to the side for solo really? or was chelle pushed to the side because her project ate up more money that she could make? solo may had to come out her pocket, ask b or daddy for a loan, or maybe the industry was pleased with her project and accepted her. perhaps chelle and kelly dont want to owe peop. so they wait it out. matthew may dip in b stash to help them is that fair?

Chris..
Why bother commenting? We get the fact that you hate the FUCK out of Beyonce and would sacrafice your family for her to take a seat. But this is reality my dare. This isn’t a show nor a game, Beyonce could drop cd’s every week if she wanted to. Why should she prevent herself from doing what she loves for the next girl to get her shine on? And you’re just proving the point that Beyonce is the shit because if she wasn’t, why would her album being released have any affect on Michelle? If she wasn’t so “hot” as you claim, neither Michelle or her fans would be concerned about Bey’s cd. It’s just clear that both you and me know that Beyonce attracts attention and once she’s in the spotlight every other chic in the game starts sweating bullets.
Do you not notice how foolish you sound? You’re basically wanting Bey to be like
“Hey, let me just sit myself in this house for a couple of years and stop doing my job, stop doing what I love, stop pleasing my fans with entertainment because these other girls want to put out cd’s and get awards, it is not like I want any anyways.”
Would you want people begging you to stop doing what you love to let your neighbor get all the shine you’re getting? Didn’t think so.

Kelly and Michelle can’t just walk away. They have a contractual responisbility. Maybe they really thought they would have management that would push them. Maybe they are waiting for their contracts to expire and then they will do what they have to do. You can’t just walk away. What I don’t understand is if you all like them then why can’t you just buy their music. I have never seen anything like this before where people are talking about they won’t buy someone’s music because of there management. Most of time people have no idea about who someone’s management is. If you like them then buy their music. Don’t punish them because of decisions they made when they were teenagers.

What we think doesn’t matter in this case. We can say all day long what Kelly and Michelle can do about their dreams and their destiny. If they wanted it as much as Beyonce they can do it. Beyonce works hard as does all the other people who stay on their grind like Rihanna even Ashanti.

I had my doubts about this album also, but I’ve liked what I heard so far.Hello Heartbreak is cool a song. That would make a great single. The Greatest is pretty good as well. The vibe of this album reminds me of Danity Kane meets Kyle Minogue.
Poor Michelle, #24 made an interesting point. Maybe she’s in an iron clad contract right now. Because I can’t see how anyone with a reasonable amount of success (gospel albums and Broadway acting) would be comfortable being a doormat to Matthew. I don’t care what anyone says, she should’ve been promoted way better than this. Not even a 2nd single. Like others have said, I wouldn’t have even known about this album if it weren’t for this blog.

If everyone is so wrorried about Michelle doing well, buy the album. No lack of promotion could stop you from doing that if you a true fan. Most of the people on here just feel like talking a lot of noise and don’t really care about supporting her anyway. Practice what you preach…
And I agree with #29. Isn’t it an insult to Michelle and Kelly for people to say that they can’t be successful unless Beyonce takes a break??
They should be able to hold their own.

First…KELLY had no problem with her album coming out, the US jus wasn’t buyin her stuff. I remeber seeing commercial on BET about Kelly album being released.
Michelle’s gospel albums had no problem (i don’t ever remember them getting pushed back)
Everyone who is a Beyonce fan knows that Beyonce paid for the B-Day project herself (basically). Paying for the videos, paying for her studio time…and even Beyonce and Solo have admitted to having fights and arguements with matthew. But at the end of the day, wud you really leave the man who gave you your start.
And lastly, if you are a Michelle Williams fan, you kno all of her dates. And she was on TRL, MTV overseas, magazines, Interviews, radio stations, and has made numerous youtube videos. What eles do yall expect. And Matthew isn’t the LAST WORD…it has to go through a lot more people.
P.S. Yall need to remember that Beyonce is a BRAND

Michelle Williams is a very talented person with a wonderful personality. Something that Beyonce and Solange do not have. PERSONALITY! Michelle needs a new Manager and label. It is time for her to stand up for herself. That is why Kelly lives abroad because she knows Matthew and camp do not care about her success. Beyonce, Kelly, and Michelle are not even friends. Oh yeah by the way. Kelly Rowland is Matthew Knowles secret child.

I am not even going to front here. I have no interest in buying Michelle or Kelly’s album. Sorry. There music does not interest me like it did when they sang in the group.
Beyonce has that star quality and she makes you stand up and pay attention. She is an entertainer. Those girls, including Solange should thank Beyonce for getting them noticed and whatever deals and promotions they have received. Enjoy it, because without the group, their solo careers are basically done.
Who knows how much longer Beyonce will be on top because she is growing and maturing. But, she has definitely made her mark and a name for herself.

After reading a few of the comments I got tired so excuse me if I’m just repeating the same ‘ol thing as everyone else. WASN’T THE PURPOSE OF MICHELLE’S ALBUM PUSHBACK IMPLEMENTED IN ORDER TO DO MORE PROMOTION AND ADVERTISING. I’m pretty sure Columbia’s ad department continues to collect their salaries, but skyscraper ads on a few websites does not justify delaying an album release. Plus, shouldn’t they’ve rushed her album into stores as soon as the ENTIRE thing leaked. The press that one incident could have caused enough groundswell to have respectable sales numbers. But, here it is, a month later and Michelle is just left to hope that fans will give a side-eye to her FREE album and go to buy the hard copy. I’m a HUGE Destiny’s Child fan, so I don’t really ride the bandwagon for blaming Beyonce. She was first lead in all of their groups and has always held the forefront position. For some odd reason, I have always tried to protect their management and staff (whom I do not know personally, or have ever met). But, it looks like the switch-up could do Kelly and Michelle some good.

Michelle does not have a good voice nor is she pretty. We would think most entertainers were just stunning from their photos, we actually don’t know how any of them really look if we haven’t seen them in person, I mean some of them are naturally pretty but for others its just make up and good art work.
Michelle and Kelly are both grown and its their choice if they choose to stay in the company of managment who doesn’t expose nor support their efforts. I mean Kelly’s voice isn’t bad, she can out sing Rhianna, Keysha Cole, and Ciara but she isn’t getting promoted and for some unknown reason they are loyal to the Knowles or maybe they have a contract they can’t get out of just yet.

Yo….Michelle is the LAST one who should be against a DC reunion because she sounds WHACK by herself. She sounds like a 9 year old throughout this entire album and it disgusts me how she expressed that she did not want any input from Beyonce’ or Kelly before the album was completed, especially after they are the reason for her career in the first place! Why not ask for Beyonce’ s input? I know I would if I had a superstar friend with the perfect formula for selling records. She even said she had to “swallow her pride” and record the song that Solange wrote for her (which happens to be one of the best tracks on this sorry excuse of an album AND her first single). The worst part about it is, both Michelle and Kelly tried so desperately with their first pop albums to “get away” from the “DC sound” but maybe that wasn’t the best idea. I understand wanting to make a name for yourself and carve out your own niche, but if you sound like a squeaky toy, you might want to play it safe instead of recording an entire album of “risky”, “un-BET-friendly” tracks. Let’s face it Michelle, your primary audience is BET. Why in the WORLD would you not do a more urban friendly album? Personally, I think the only reason she did a pop album is because the gospel world disowned her after she did that “Destiny Fulfilled” album and that racy “Cater 2 U” video. She is NOT solo artist material!!

This link is Michelle Williams performing “The Greatest” LIVE, not lipped like most artist, on a Fox news show. Michelle vocally is killing most of the chicks in the game. She is a pure singer with incredible range, but I forgot most of you on this site like Rhianna and other bad voices. To each its own though. I am only buying albums where people can actually sing. I will buy this album
