♫ ALBUM REVIEW: MICHELLE WILLIAMS - UNEXPECTED

Monday, October 6, 2008

michellepromo.jpg

Former Destiny’s Child bandmate Michelle Williams had already released two solo albums, but in a genre in which the other members hadn’t tapped into. Now, she’s back, with a more contemporary album, where she dabbles into dance, pop and a little bit of electronica, with her third solo set, Unexpected, due out October 7th.

LISTEN UP:
♫ MICHELLE WILLIAMS - HELLO HEARTBREAK
♫ MICHELLE WILLIAMS - THE GREATEST
♫ MICHELLE WILLIAMS - HUNGOVER

When I first heard that Michelle would be departing from her gospel solo career, I was a little worried. What was she going to talk about? What was the music going to sound like? Even though she started off as an R&B artist with Destiny’s Child, I just wasn’t sure what she what type of sound she could possibly go for on this album. A snippet of a Stargate/Ne-Yo-sounding song entitled “♫ Stop This Car” (which did make the album) leaked, and I gained confidence in Michelle’s solo project. But I was even more pleasantly surprised by her official first single, “♫ We Break the Down” when it dropped back in April.

The album took an entirely different direction than what I expected… hence the album title, Unexpected. Despite a few minor setbacks (Michelle’s video was not given airplay on BET because it wasn’t “urban enough,” the month-long album push-back, and the entire album finding it’s way online a month before it’s release), Michelle has stayed humble, excited and wide-eyed about this new project, which finds her experimenting with a lot of pop and dance sounds with Jim Jonsin and Rico Love.

I think the sound suits Michelle’s voice. The album’s gems include the pulsating dance-club banger, “Hello Heartbreak,” the intoxicatingly spastic “Hungover,” as well as “The Greatest” and the Brandy-inspired “Thank You.” Despite my doubts, Michelle really did manage to put out a solid effort, with a cohesive sound that differentiates her from her former bandmates Beyonce and Kelly, as well as other signees to the Music World imprint.

I really like it.. she has a smooth falsetto voice.. this sound really fits her voice.. I always felt the DC songs weren’t written to fit Michelle or Kelly’s voice but catered to that other chick that shall not be named cause this article is about Michelle..

I’ll definitely support Michelle cause I can workout to this, clean my house, get ready for the club with most of the upbeat tempos I’ve heard..

AND FYI.. Michelle is not and was not a gospel artist, like Vickie Winans, Dottie Peoples, CeCe Winans.. She said that recorded those albums because she felt like praising God for her sucess and just wanted to do something inspirational..

Honestly, I think Michelle has a chance with this CD..too bad MTV cancelled TRL cause I believe Michelle would have gotten the exposure she needed and sold more copies..Also, if this was released this summer, I’m sure most of these dance tracks would have been bumped all summer in the clubs, especially overseas.. Especially Germany, my home!! These Germans would have lost their light sticks jumping to the beat LOL..

I bought my copy to support Michelle and because she is from the midwest area. I’m not totally crazy about the album but its not garbage either. There are a lot of dance tracks there. I think this was done in an effort to get more shelf life out of the album. I can definitely see the direction of the project however she still wasn’t given much promotion so I can’t understand the pushback for solo. I also watched the clip of her performing live and again it was ok just not spectacular.

i don’t wanna assume anything about matthew knowles, but i do agree they didn’t promote her much. but you know what, michelle promoted herself like crazy and let’s prove to them, that she don’t need their support or promotion - she can succeed by self promotion!

I think Michelle is making a big mistake by making The Greatest her second single. I think she needs to stick to the dance floor and make Hello Heartbreak the second single. That type of sound fits her really well. But the album is pretty good I hope she gets the attention that she deservers. Because I really want her to stick to this type of music.

#73 - Every black artist does not have to create songs for BET. Have you noticed that the majority of songs on BET are catered to individuals under the age of 25? Michelle, and her fans, are aware that she is not a “booty poppin” artist. I think that her not asking for Bey’s opinion was a good idea. Have you listened to Bey’s two new songs? Same format, same concept, no growth.

the album it’s beautiful, everibody nows that michelle take a dance sound but like the intro said “expect the unexpected”. i was shoked with the last tracks, because from “stop this car” til’ the end the album take a turn to beautiful R&B ballas and even a poprock song, that was really unexpected to me, and i love all teh song specially the last ones.
so don’t expect just a dance album, expect great and beautiful songs.

pd i love “Thank you”

First off, Michelle Williams’ album is actually good. And I don’t see why it is wrong for her to do gospel or a pop album. Why limit yourself? Reading some of these comments are just so ignorant. I’m pretty sure you guys don’t know what happens behind the scenes to know what is going on. I wish her well cause I love the album. My favorite songs are The Greatest and Til the End of the World.

Apparently when you become a black solo artist they change your DNA. I didn’t even know that was possible, but she is like 5 shades lighter now. Incredible…not

I just bought this album. WOW. Its ALOT better than I thought it would be. She actually have some Solid tracks on here. Yo, Out of the 13 song, I would only skip maybe 2 of them. Go get it. She is bringing something that is actually different or recycled. Its hot. Go michelle. I’ll cop another copy for a gift or something.

Everyone who thinks that Kelly and Michelle need to be with new managment or a new label are the main people that don’t support them.

NO OTHER LABEL IS GOING TO PROVIDE THEM WITH THE CHANCES AND PROMOTION THAT MATHEW AND MUSIC WORLD IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO GIVE THEM AND ONLY BECAUSE THEY’RE “FAMILY”.

Records are barely selling and labels have 1 to 2 stars they cater to and Kelly and Michelle wouldn’t be either going to someplace “new”.

When you’re a huge artist like Beyonce or Jay, etc. each day you don’t have something out the media and any one that talks to you or people affiliated with you are asking what’s next with you and that’s the promotion right there. It builds with questions and speculation until that time finally comes and they never have to promote a thing (even though they still do) - it gets promoted for them just on the strength of their name.

The names “Kelly” and “Michelle” ain’t ringing bells unless “Beyonce” is coming after it.

Go buy their albums.
