AWARENESS: CELEBS PROMOTE LITERACY IN AMERICA

Friday, October 3, 2008

Mario in Washington D.C.

Yesterday, celebrities and prominent figures from coast to coast helped create the World’s largest shared reading experience in one day by reading one book, Don Freeman’s classic, CORDUROY, to aid the literacy crisis in the U.S. on Jumpstart’s Read for the Record Day with thousands of reading events happening simultaneously across the country.

New York kicked off the event on the TODAY Show with spokespersons LL Cool J and Matt Lauer, Jesse McCartney, Greg Kinnear, Maria from Sesame Street and Mary-Louise Parker. Other events included Singer/Songwriter/Actress JoJo in Boston; Gabrielle Union in Los Angeles; and R&B Star Mario in Washington D.C. Notable politicians, educators and community leaders were also on hand to support the early literacy crisis in young children. Great Cause!

I’m still confused about Gabriels return to wigs after the hype over her haircut in Ebony a couple of months ago. Anything for face time I guess.

Gabriel needs to cover them boobs up or else them little boys gonna focus on the breasteses and not the book.

Gabrielle Union is her usual attention-seeking self in that dress. Completely inappropriate for this type of event. But she’s a bird (yes, celebs can be birds too) so I’m not at all surprised. Maybe there were some rich ballers way in the back we can’t see.

Anyway, Jumpstart is a great program, providing low income preschools with books for the kids. It’s a shame that the average child of color is close to seven years old before they can read a book.

TURN OFF THE TV AND READ TO YOUR KIDS, FOLKS!

26.

I'm just sayin...

Good cause! Mario has been doing a lot of charity work this year! I like to see the young celebs reaching out! You go Mario lead by example!

I happy to see events like these posted. I didn’t even know this was going on but I don’t have kids so why would I? Overall its still nice to see ppl trying to make a difference is a child’s life. I’ve been reading since I was 3 yrs old and haven’t stopped. Education made a BIG impact on my life and I’m very thankful that my mom picked up w/ the school system lacked. Applauds to this cause and all the other parents out there trying to make an impact on their kids’ life! Trust me… is does matter!

People, please read to your kids! Kids reading on a kindergarten-1st grade level, but are in the third grade. Shame! I would love it if Mario came to read to my little ones in my class, lol!

This is definitely a good look and I hope they keep it up. There are too many Americans especially children who have no idea how to read or write.

Celebrities aren’t respoinsible for child literacy. That’s the job for parents and teachers.

My daughter just finished reading that book Corduroy,( very cute book by the way)from her school’s library. This is definitely a good look, I am glad to see that celebrities take the time out to do things like this. It is so sad you never hear about things like this on the news or on major magazines. Keep up the good work everyone!

this is a great cause. i didn’t think Mario could get any sexier. i wanna have his babies.

oh yeah, and jojo can sing her @ss off!

45.

Saturday, October 4, 2008 /

Great to see celebs getting involved in things like this, but ONE THING, why does Mario look like he is singing the book, rather than reading it?? LOL..

46.

Mr. Bright

Saturday, October 4, 2008 /

How about we stop focusing on Gabby’s dress and focus on the fact that she was there for a good cause which is more than we can say for a lot of other celebrities. And honestly her dress is better than what those kids mom’s probably wear !

The Color Purple

Saturday, October 4, 2008 /

Pass it on.

Please, please advise everyone you know that they absolutely can NOT go to the polls wearing any Obama (or whoever you are voting for) shirts, pins, hats, etc. It is AGAINST THE LAW and will be grounds to have the polling officials to turn you away. This is considered campaigning and no one can campaign within X amount of feet of the polls. They are banking on us being overly excited and not being aware of this long standing law that you can bet will be ENFORCED THIS YEAR!!!!!

They are banking that if you are turned away, you will not go home and change your clothes and return to the polls to vote. Please just don’t wear ANY gear of any sorts to the polls! Please share this information with as many people as you can. If you are already aware of this, please don’t take it as insulting your intelligence.

Have a great day and see you at the polls on or BEFORE November 4th.

A CHANGE IS COMING!!!!!

A couple of things….

@ #47 The Color Purple- Good looking out, but that warning you are spreading is a an internet LIE! In fact they are urging you to do the exact opposite! So please you might want to FALL back on your lack getting your facts straight!

Is it me or did anyone else think that the pic of Mary Louise Parker was Michael Jackson?? I swear it! If you tilt your head and stare at it long enough you’ll see it.

Back to the elections….
