Troy Anthony Davis has been given another week before he is set to be executed for the 1989 slaying of Mark MacPhail, an off-duty Savannah, Georgia, police officer.
The new date of November 3 is Davis’ third execution date in 15 months.
Davis has never denied being at the crime scene but maintains he was not the shooter. The US Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal, although seven of nine key witnesses have recanted their testimony since the trial.
His last chance to escape execution is a pardon from the state of Georgia.
‘DUMB N*GGER’ RECEIPT
Keith Slater, 22, bought a pair of shoes from Journeys, but later returned them after finding a cheaper pair at another store. Slater received more than a refund, though.
Printed on the receipt to identify the customer are the words “Dumb N*gger”.
“When he showed me that receipt, I could not believe it. He couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe it. None of us got any sleep just thinking about it,” said Slater’s mother, Linda.
Slater’s father, Keith, feels that “the appropriate thing to do is to terminate the employee because it’s just inappropriate for that to be there, and then to have that deleted from their system.”
The Slaters filed a complaint with mall security, and a representative of the U.S. Department of Justice said it would refer the case to the FBI to determine whether a civil rights violation has occurred.
Journeys issued the following statement:
“While we are continuing to investigate this incident, it now appears that an employee in one of our stores entered highly inappropriate statements in a form used to process a merchandise return. Needless to say, such an act was not authorized by Journeys, and will not be tolerated. This employee has been terminated.
At Journeys, we pride ourselves on valuing and respecting every customer. We are shocked and sickened that a former associate could be responsible for an act so out of keeping with our culture and our values. We profoundly regret this incident.”

STATE OF THE BLACK UNION ’09
Plans are underway for Tavis Smiley’s 2009 State of the Black Union. The event, scheduled for February 28, 2009, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, will mark the 10th anniversary and return to Los Angeles, the site of the first symposium.
The upcoming event’s theme “Making America As Good As Its Promise” will capture the essence of what it has been for blacks to be enlightened, encouraged and empowered by these solution-driven conversations over the years.
According to Smiley, “We knew we had become the caretakers of something very special, of a movement that would greatly impact African Americans. We also knew that somehow the dialogue that had begun in 2000 had to continue. We did not foresee a 10-year span, but we are humbled by the breadth and scope of the events and what they have meant to communities all over the country.”
The event is free and open to the public, and advance registration can be made at tavistalks.com. It will be broadcast live on C-SPAN and will feature two panel discussions from 8:00 a.m. — 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m. PT.

I didn’t realize they could print that on sales receipts. I know they can do it in restaurants to identify tables and bar customers. I read a story about a couple recieving “cheap jews” on their receipt; I even got a receipt calling me sexy/short/choc.-which obviously wasn’t a bad thing, but nonetheless odd that they forgot to erase it. Before you all start hollering in defense of your ignorance, I want you to ask yourself what other race/group of people have decided to internalize a racial slur and to support their ignorance say the changes in the spelling or pronunciation makes it kay, ask a Hispanic, Asian, Native American, African, or Jewish person would they do so. I watched the state of the Black Union for the first time this year. I would like to make it to ’09′s symposium but funds are a little tight. But we’ll see. I appreciate events like this, giving people a chance to dialogue and network with one another. I love it.
On the prisoner who is scheduled to be executed next week, my prayers go out to him and his family. At a certain point you must come to terms with dying, for your own peace of mind. I don’t know how I would be knowing that I’m about to be executed for a crime I did not commit. This is like of other innocent poeople who have been executed without a fair trial or a chance to appeal the verdict. I hope he has turned his life over to Christ. Either way he will need him.
I also hope that Barack attends the State of the Black Union this time. Seeing as he didn’t last time and it would mean so much more if/when he is President.
Actually if you all knew the entire story about the receipt, the cashier was a young woman (18). She didn’t know anything about what was on the receipt. She said she bipassed the menu where you punch in the customer’s info and just hit a code for a generic Customer Name. Well later when all this came out, the young woman was fired, but it wasn’t her fault. Apparantly a disgruntled employee that was fired entered that into the computer around the time he knew he was to be terminated. So he was fired, but was like I’m going to get you Journeys, and I guess he just sat back and waited til it all went down.
So for all you that are saying you would’ve caught a case, beat down the cashier, ect., things aren’t always what they seem.

The receipt incident happened here in Kansas City, KS. The young man did’nt
notice his receipt untill he went home, the store was closed when he went back to
complain about. Yes racisim is alive and well. Everyone in the damn store
should be fired as far as I am concerned.
The man from the store did right by filing a report and starting a case…he did the right course of actions.
The beat down is not necessary but you have every right to be angry and should find a good lawyer to sue every penny from Journeys.
