NEWS ROUNDUP: SHARPTON CONVICTED / EMMETT TILL LAW / BIGGEST GAS PRICE DROP
Monday, October 13, 2008
Al Sharpton and seven other activists were convicted of disorderly conduct during protests over the police killing of Sean Bell on his wedding day.
The judge sentenced Sharpton to time served, who had already served 5 and a half hours in jail.
Two hundred people were arrested in May for blocking bridges, tunnels and intersections in response to the acquittal of three detectives in the 50-bullet shooting of Bell.
Most of the cases had been dismissed, but Sharpton and his co-defendants insisted upon a trial. While testifying, Sharpton said, “We wanted to stop violence, not cause violence.”
EMMETT TILL LAW
The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act has been signed into law and will allow the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute Civil Rights-era crimes.
The bill is named after Emmett Till, a black teenager who was mutilated and murdered for allegedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi in 1955. The case remains unsolved and his death helped propel the modern Civil Rights Movement.
The unprecedented bill authorizes the attorney general to spend $10 million annually over 10 years to investigate and prosecute cold cases from the Civil Rights-era.
BIGGEST GAS PRICE DROP

Over the weekend, the average price of gasoline per gallon had its largest drop ever.
According to Trilby Lundberg, who compiles the Lundberg Survey which offers coverage of fuel prices, “Plummeting oil prices and caving gasoline demand have combined to bring the biggest retail gasoline price cut in the history of the market. We’ve been doing this 58 years. This is truly the biggest price drop.”
Lundberg added that gas prices could fall below $3.00 a gallon, on average, as early as December:
“If crude oil prices don’t spike, we can expect further price cutting for two reasons. Gasoline demand will continue to shrink in our weak economic condition, and retailers, who have been receiving deep buying price cuts, will be anxious to pass through any further price cuts they receive quickly. They need the sales.”

It’s about damn time they dropped the gas prices! I filled up my whip @ $2.85 per gallon today! Yayyy!!!!
Al Sharpton in jail??? What’s the judge really trying to prove? All of them were protesting for a damn good cause and are convicted of disorderly conduct? The judge should have focused on convicting the 3 cops that killed him.

I thought they had leads in the Emmit Till case at one time and that it was narrowed down to the woman’s husband and relative or friend? most of the evidence relies on testimony from people who have died. Love Al! He has to be lead to do what he does. We need to honor him and other civil rights heroes that have paved a way for us in a bigger way than in the past. Like an all star ceremony with entertainment like the BET awards and have each speaker acting out the person or showcasing that civil rights hero and give awards to them or their families to show appreciation. Would be nice for Black History Month or MLK Day. It needs to be an annual all star event!!! Held in the hometown of the biggest honoree each year.

Malcolm X

Our lives mean nothing in this land called America as the Sean Bell case and other atrocities bear witness. Nothing has changed from the time our ancestors first stepped foot on these shores. Injustice, racism and hate crimes are still the order of the day. They can shoot us 50 times while being unarmed, kill us, and it`s deemed justifiable homicide. To them our lives have no value.
They arrest people protesting injustice and let murderers go free; go figure. Why???? It`s because our lives have no value. It just like what Malcolm X said in one of his quotes, “To show you the hypocrisy of the law, instead of arresting the discriminators the law arrests the demonstrators”, end quote. Injustice is still the order of the day.
The Emmett Till case is one of the most brutal crimes in this nation`s history. They say it`s unsolved yet they know who the murderers are. Afterall, they acquitted them. We, as a people, clearly see the injustices of this land yet we are deemed ungrateful, complaining and troublemakers when we point out their crimes. This is why men like Malcolm X died because he dared to call out the real criminals….

The Emmett Till law is monumental to U.S. History! Although the parties involved in this teen’s murder are possibly deceased by now, it just shows that those that commit crimes of hate and race, will get their just desserts.
I have no comment on Rev. Sharpton.
Gas prices should drop. It’s election time and we need a BREAK from these out of control inflated prices! It’s bad when you gotta decide on whether to eat for the day or put gas in your car! GTFOH!

Glad for Emmett Till law, get them hate mongers from long ago. They probably sitting up in the old folks home, thinking they got away with some shit….i’d love to see the law roll up on their old ass, slap off their oxygen mask, yank their ass up out the bed, and throw their ass in a nasty jail, where the inmates beat and flog them everyday and steal their bologna sandwich. And no one helping their decrepit ass to that nasty toilet bowl either, neither is no one wiping the piss off their evil ass when they have a accident. Evil bastards….

One thing i hate about the gas prices…..they always give us temporary relief and in three weeks time, it will triple, so there’s no real savings….its like making it cheaper for a week or two, and then tripling it for 3 to 4 weeks; add it up folks, there’s no savings, and actually the gas company makes a killing.
Just saying…..cause i wish they stop playing with us with these gas prices…..they were stable years ago, and why can’t we get some actual stability with the gas?
Just asking…

Al shapton need to to in jail. how you going to block traffic during busy hours. He should have had his ass over at that strip club protesting so of that crime that going on over the. Last time CL lets get the story right. If something is wrong you dont need to put dirt on it to make it seem tragic. These two were not getting married they didnt take the time to fill out the right paperwork. So if could not have been his wedding night. That why New york she can t sue the city of New york because they were not even common law married. Lesson learn Drugs kill in all ways.
I saw some one gibe credit to Obama for the gas drop. That is so funny.
10 million dollars. Thats all good and well but who is going to pay for that. News flash they have been solving old civil right cases before this ten million. And thought I read that congress pass a bill just like this a few year back for another cold civil right case. Dont we already pay a whole FBI task force for this. Just a thought

No I’m a realist. I believe in Right and Wrong. Some of us dont and that is whats wrong with the world. Everybody crying about taxes ad how much money they dont have but get cruck when congress passes out mney for something that we already pay for.
Second I see Sean Bell case, just like Garlow Wilson and The Jena Six. It’s always tragic when a young black man loses his life or ends up in jail, but it is even more tragic when we dont learn from the it. Why do we have to make up things. It took like three months for anyone to correctly report that Garlow Wilson rape a black girl and not a white girl. If you look at the fact if it were your daughter you would not have a problem with his sentence. If it were your son that Sean Bell jump on with the only reason being he didnt like what he said to him ( that little boy had nothing to do with the noose niether did Sean Bell)
Al Sharpton know to have a protest you have to have a permit. He chose not to do so. So there fore he chose to go to jail.
How about lets get the crime and the drug dealers out of our communities? Let s protest the degrading of our daughters and sons. I’ll wear a shirt for that. Hell I’ll march on something. But we wont do it. We will continue to turn our head for the drug dealer and and blame the police until we need them.

The torture and killing of a 14 year old BOY name Emmett Till is the story that gets to me the most. This law is long overdue, but thank God it was passed. The two white men that actually CONFESSED to the murder, yes they confessed to it in a magazine back in the 60’s, but because of the stupid double jeopardy law (can’t be tried for the same crime twice), justice was never served. The woman that Emmett whistled at is still alive living a nice comfortable life. God will take care of her and I’m sure those “men” are now burning in hell.

His mother Mamie would’ve been happy to see the progess [..which is a SLOW process] they’ve made in his name over the past few years since her death. Yes, the case is 53 years old, but everybody and all the cases during that era deserve closure.

Black people are being murdered, falsely imprisoned, having their property stolen, Katrina victims, and Jim Crow returning everywhere, and you people think prosecuting some DEAD CRIMINALS IS IMPORTANT!!!
Wake up!!! THERE WILL NEVER BE JUSTICE IN THE EMMET TILL CASE. NO ONE WILL BE CONVICTED. NO ONE WILL BE PUNISHED. YOU CAN’T PUNISH THE DEAD.
All that will happen is that somewhere on a piece of paper the names of the criminals will be recorded, and rascist will go right on celebrating their victories of the past and the PRESENT.
And all the while they’re recording that, thousands of black boys will be unjustly marching off to jail.
All this empty law does is send a msg to white rascist THAT YOU TOO CAN CONTINUE to take out these negroes while you’re living and NOTHING will be done until you’re safely in the ground.
Not only that, the millions being spent to investigate the so-called COLD CASE, will be given to the heirs of the criminals by creating jobs for them instead of giving REPARATIONS TO THE EMMETT TILL FAMILY.
If they truly wanted to give the family justice, they would give them the money. Isn’t that what they do in WRONGFUL DEATH cases for WHITE families everytime someone is killed???
OJ is going to jail right now because he got convicted for not turning over all his worldly possession in a supposed wrongful death, and he wasn’t even found guilty.
ANY BLACK PERSON WHO THINKS INVESTIGATING DEAD PEOPLE IS VICTORY NEEDS TO HAVE THEIR HEAD EXAMINED.
