POLITICS: FINAL DEBATE RECAP
Thursday, October 16, 2008

The final showdown between Sens. Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain was by far the best with more substantive issues and less talking points.
McCain made the event exciting, but Obama made it memorable. McCain knew this was his last chance to reach undecided voters and he came out swinging, which included keeping his promise to bring up William Ayers. Analysts noted how petty that made him look on the day which the Dow Jones had lost 8 percent of its value. Additionally, his eye-rolling, grimacing and smirking illustrated nothing but contempt toward his Democratic rival. It was reminiscent of Al Gore’s sighing during his debate with George Bush in 2000, which many think contributed to his defeat.
Obama remained cool, calm and took every opportunity to change the subject to economics and the woes of the average American. When McCain mentioned Obama’s association with Ayers, Obama used it to his advantage to claim that whom he associates with on economic issues are former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Paul Volcker and successful investor and the world’s richest man Warren Buffett.
Obama continued use of his line that McCain would represent a continuation of Bush’s policies. McCain fired back that he was not Bush, and “if [Obama] wanted to run against Bush, [he] should’ve run four years ago”. McCain’s advisers have been stressing the need to to make that distinction, but it’s unlikely that he made an impression with voters. Major network polls show Obama went three for three following last night’s debate and increased his already high chances of victory.

The debates last night just showed how low the Republican Party will go to try to slander Sen. Obama. I will say that in the beginning I thought Sen. Obama, soon to be PRESIDENT OBAMA, was not fighting back like he should, but as I watched the debate I realized he was doing what he needed to do; and that was to show people that he was educated and was not going to use dirty tactics against Sen. McCain. He was getting his point across by showing McCain that all the things he kept bringing up was repetition. I know I must have heard McCain mention the ACORN thingy, several time. You would have thought that once Sen. Obama addressed it the first time that McCain would have left well enough alone. He did not leave it alone until finally Sen. Obama put him in his rspective place. That to me just showed that Sen. Obama is the right man for the job at hand. I will say that last night finalized my decision to VOTE for OBAMA!!
IN ORDER FOR YOUR VOICE TO BE HEARD, YOU MUST VOTE!!

Obama is always cool and classy while McCain comes off as an arrogant hot-headed idiot. I was annoyed by his reference over and over about that damn Joe Plumber. Did y’all know that “Joe the Plummer” ain’t even a registered voter? AND he admitted that he brings in less than $250k per year so Obama’s plan would actually HELP him…What a freakin’ JOKE! http://www.politico.com/b.../bensmith/1008/The_Joe_fi le.html?resubmit=1

Mc Cain did not win any policy points with me because he was still speaking in general terms with no specifics. And to try to pitch a spending freeze in the midst of this economic climate is irresponsible to no end. He completely ignores not only the middle class but those in POVERTY!!!! For McCain to diminish the health risk of a troubled pregnancy to the mother, outlandish/sexist/ and wrong. He came off meanspirited and rambling (not speaking directly to the questions nor answering coherently). I live in the same city as Joe the plumber and believe me, there are many many more Obama/Biden signs in yards than McCain/Palin. Do NOT take your eyes off of the ball though. Voters must be vigilant. There are many schemes to deter people from casting their ballot. Do NOT fall for them.
McCain/Palin are on the wrong side of history in this. When we need equal pay for equal work, better support for education, healthcare as a RIGHT, fiscal responsibility and spending to stimulate growth *not to reward big oil*, more jobs, tax relief for working families, everyone to pull their weight, civil liberties protected, more peace in the world…. the clear choice is Obama/Biden.

P.S. Obama did not owe McCain An apology of any sort. They let the racism genie out of the bottle and they can’t put it back in. Palin won’t even address the calls for MURDER!!!! at her rallies. Where is the indignance for that. SHAMEFUL, the way McCain tried to grandstand about that. John Lewis was not only right for comparing their veiled attempts to George Wallace, but I would go one step further to say that they are emotionally hi-jacking their base with lies about trying to link Obama with middle-eastern threats, and questioning his citizenship!!!! Disgraceful.
Now more learned people will dismiss these things out of hand, but what about people like that poor misguided woman that he had to correct publicly. Her notion stems from their careful web of propaganda. Now you want to cry foul when you get cught up in your own mess?

I must agree with the majority of the posts in saying that McCain did come out swinging during this debate. He had no choice because you know you’ve hit rock bottom when your own supporters BOO you at a campaign rally! LOL
McCain had to do what the party felt was needed to keep a foot in the game! The constant attacks regarding Acorn and Ayers were priceless!
I believe Obama spoke as McCain agreed, eloquently and directly answered the rumors and/or allegations to America! I also enjoyed watching the interviews after the debate when they polled a few of the voters. Just goes to show that folx know people that will not vote for Obama simply because he is a Black man. Sad, sad, sad!
I did notice how Mrs. McCain did not shake Michelle’s hand or even look her direction. How rude is that? How can you become a first lady and you are not poised enough to greet and/or address the people or colleagues?
Michelle would definitely make a much better first lady! With that said, EVERYONE needs to get out and vote! Obama is the TRUTH!

GREAT debate! but i felt Obama was waay too easy on Mccain and missed many opportunities to fire back. but hey, that’s okay. in the end he still came out on top so i’m straight.
somebody should have came out there and gave Mccain old ass some visine eye drops. all that d@mn blinking. make no d@mn sense! and i was laughing my @ss off when he said Sarah Palin knows what it’s like to have a child with autism. i was thinkin i could have SWORN her son had down syndrome, but okay.

Why do people who support McCain feel that somehow they will always be attacked? I’m sorry, I don’t care if you support McCain, frankly as a black Republican I believe that McCain has done everything to undermine true Republicanism. Just look at his rallies. I know you always have one or two off moments, but too many of his rallies have the tone of a pre-civil rights march where whites began to fear that something was being taken from them. When I first informed some of my peers that I was going to support Obama, I was told to go back to Africa (Seriously). He not only voted with George Bush a number of times, on issues that were near and dear to the hearts of conservatives, he turned his back on us. Now, we want to give him a chance because we thought that he was the best choice to go against an Obama.

Lastly,
For the record and so McShame can stop lying, I hope all of you caught Obama’s policy point on small buisness healthcare “0 penalty”. I guess John didn’t hear him last debate when he explained it. Maybe he should turn up his hearing aid next time and he’d catch it. He seemd genuinely surprised to find out he has been so wrong for so long about that.

Obama again proved himself superior in maturity, composure, and long term planning. he always upholds a level of class that McCain isn’t even close to, and his cheap tactics relied on nothing but inaccuracies, exaggerations, mud slinging, and petty accusations designed to ‘trick’ the average American into to thinking Obama isn’t vote worthy.
America won’t transform overnight, and unlike McCain, Obama is making that clear. What he is saying is that with a united effort, under his leadership, things will improve drastically for ALL Americans, on a long term basis.
I liked how Obama completely debunked McCains ridiculous claims of him not “repudiating” negative comments by not only pointing out that every single one of McCains ads are negative, but by bringing up what McCain supporters shout at their rallies - which McCain didn’t actually disapprove of, even during this debate.
It was also good to hear him shut-down the Ayers and Acorn farce that McCains campaign has been relying on lately. Plus he always tried to take the debate away from his and McCains personal feuds, and get back to their policies. Overall, I think Obama did a far better job. Yeah McCain came out swinging but it just looked desperate and typically accusatory to me. McCain knows he can’t win purely on his merits, so he has to try his damnedest to win of Obamas claimed weaknesses. He wants votes AGAINST Obama, since he knows few are giving votes FOR him.

Ok….I watched that debate last night and was appalled by some of McCain’s comments and overall behavior. I was particularly amazed at his response regarding improving our education system in America, where he basically said that people who come home after serving in the armed forces should be allowed to teach without having to become a “certified” teacher! How is that going to IMPROVE education by letting just any uneducated “Joe” war hero teach our children (and by uneducated I mean uneducated in education). Also, I did not care for the way he promised additional funds to taxpayers for healthcare except for those with “gold-plated Cadillac” plans that have coverage for “plastic surgery and TRANSPLANTS and other things like this”. Since when are plastic surgery and transplants found under the same umbrella? He made it sound like a transplant is an ostentatious addition to health care instead of a life-saving necessity. As a daughter of a father who just had a successful Kidney transplant and a sister of a brother in need of one, his comments came off as completely insensitive and out of touch with the needs of Americans. I am still waiting to hear from my father about his thoughts on this statement as he claims to be a McCain supporter. I am not with him on that one. McCain’s temperament ALONE could get all of us killed!!! He comes off as extremely arrogant, immature (to be so dang old), and unintelligent. He does not belong in the white house!!!

the “Bradley effect,” in which party affiliation and answers to pollsters prove superficial compared to deep-seated racial feelings.
The Bradley effect, less commonly called the Wilder effect, is a proposed explanation for an alleged discrepancy between voter opinion polls and election outcomes in American political campaigns when a white candidate and a non-white candidate run against each other. Named for Tom Bradley, an African-American who lost the 1982 California governor’s race despite being ahead in some voter polls, the Bradley effect refers to an alleged tendency on the part of some voters to tell pollsters that they are undecided or likely to vote for a black candidate, and yet, on election day, vote for his/her white opponent.
The theory of the Bradley effect is that the inaccurate polls have been skewed by the phenomenon of social desirability bias. Specifically, some white voters give inaccurate polling responses for fear that, by stating their true preference, they will open themselves to criticism of racial motivation. The reluctance to give accurate polling answers has sometimes extended to post-election exit polls as well. The race of the pollster conducting the interview may factor in to voters’ answers.
Some analysts have dismissed the theory of the Bradley effect as “baseless”, while others argue that it may have existed in past elections, but not in more recent ones.
what do u think?

OBAMA WAS SOLELY THERE TO STATE HIS POLICIES AND ANSWER QUESTIONS THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WANTED ANSWERED. HE’S NOT THERE TO PLAY FIGHT WITH MCCAIN. OBAMA SHOWED HE CAN REMAIN CALM AND LEVEL-HEADED WHEN UNDER PRESSURE. HE PROVED HE CAN STAY FOCUSED WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH. HE SHOWED THAT HE’S CARES BY KNOWING THE PROBLEMS OF THE PEOPLE, GOING DOOR TO DOOR LISTENING TO PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THEIR EVERY DAY PROBLEMS AND STRUGGLES. HE SHOWED THAT EVEN THOUGH HIM AND MCCAIN BELIEVE IN DIFFERENT THINGS HE NOT TOO PROUD TO SAY, “YES I AGREE WITH JOHN ON THIS”..PROVING TO ME THAT HE WANTS EVERYONE(REPUBLICAN, INDEPENDENTS, DEMOCRATS) TO ALL FIGHT FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF AMERICA
YOUR RIGHT THOUGH…HE WASN’T A AGGRESSIVE MAN LAST NIGHT, BUT HE SURE LOOKED LIKE THE RIGHT MAN LAST NIGHT.

We really need a taxbreak. I get tired of them taxing my checks like crazy and then I dont even get back half of what they take and I have a good decent hourly wage. Not to put my business out their but I make $14/hour; That should equal $1120 every two weeks, but after tax, Im down to $900 and after premiums and 401k that leaves me with $856 every 2 weeks. Then you have taxes on clothes, food etc…..property tax, state tax, tax on your cars. It’s ridiculous. We need a change, middle class has always suffered because the rich stay rich, the poor stay poor (but receive help) and then the middle class makes up for where both lack and its very unfair!!!!! Change is good and I hope OBAMA comes through on his plan.

I’m an ARDENT Obama supporter, but I was shocked at how sharp McCain was in last night’s debate.
I really wasn’t expecting him to come out with so many specific policy and record examples.
The Joe the Plumber thing got old quick - but when McCain first brought it up I was really surprised… I had seen the segment with Joe the Plumber on TV earlier and didn’t expect it to be an issue at the debate…. that poor guy’s life is going to change for the next few days lol.
McCain’s bit about his NOT BEING BUSH was a nice jab…… ugggghh..
that said, McCain was as condescending as ever and his demeanor was cantankerous.
Obama rightfully played it safe - just let the clock run out for the win lol.

I think the reason why most of the undecided people are not sure of Obama is because John McKKKlan has painted a picture to the people that Obama is going to raise taxes of ALL PEOPLE. Which is completely false because he’s going to tax the large corporations that are getting off easy by just paying lawyers and etc. to keep from paying taxes and hes making a complete ass of himself, because the upperclass and these corporations do not pay their fair share. Obama is going to give tax breaks to the middle class, and I don’t know why McKKKlan keeps saying that shit confusing people.
Saying that the small businesses are going to suffer under Obama’s plan.In in actuality they’re going to benefit because Obama is not going to make them pay anything, because they’re getting a tax break.
And just for my understanding could someone explain to me what this John Lewis guy said the reason why McCain feels he needs an apology from Obama.

Obama lost the debate and he lost it badly… Mr. Cool was not the act to go with in an enormously important final debate when McCain was in attack mode and had everything to prove by bringing Obama down. I don’t think Obama responded to even half of the serious allegations McCain threw at him with and when he did respond his answers were weak, incomplete, or unconvincing. With the amount and ferocity of the crap McCain was throwing his way this simply was not the hour to play Mr. Nice Guy. What the hell happened to the “Enough is enough” Obama from the Sarah Palin lipstick-on-a-pig insanity? They tried to score a cheap sucker-punch but he came out and punched them right back and shut them up. I’m sorry but Obama needed to put away the calm and cool demeanor for 90 minutes last night and confront McCain’s and the Republicans’ vicious assaults with his own anger and pissed off-ness.
This was a different kind debate and Obama failed to rise to the occasion and just let McCain unleash pure character assasination on him for 90 minutes. A huge disappointment

I agree that McCain did a lot better in this debate than he has in the past two debates. I was turned off by “joe the plummer” talk. (What is it with the McCain campaign and Joes?…I digress).
I felt that Obama did spend most of the debate defending himself, and his issues. He could have done better in my opinion. Most people already know who they’re voting for at this point and those who don’t are leaning towards a candidate and is looking for a reason not to vote for them.
Those people at the rally’s the black male that “begged” McCain to get rough on Obama and the old lady that thought Obama was an Arab and even Joe the plummer were paid, so that McCain had talking points for this debate…anyway everybody we know that they’re gonna use everything against Obama, so we gotta show up and show out at the polls.

@113..which debate were you watching? i’m just curious cause it couldn’t have been the one that was on lastnight. i agree Obama was calm and cool but that’s always been his demeanor. once again Mccain in no way shape or form got into any specifics about how he’s gonna turn things around for the country. now if you’re talking about he won from the republicans point of view, i can see how you would say that because it’s probably the best he’s done in all 3 debates so they’re delighted. but he already has their vote. but they aren’t the one’s he needs to appeal to. he still hasnt appealed to the voters he really needs in order to win which are the Independents.
Obama is ahead but he still hasn’t won yet folks. he said today himself don’t get cocky! please please please go out and VOTE on Nov 4th! let’s bring it home for him. it wouldn’t make any sense to go register but then not vote!

First all they said on the internet (CNN, MSN, ABC) that McCain’s whole plan was to rattle Obama….he felt the only way he could turn this election around was to have Obama come down to his level….Obama didn’t fall for it…
If Obama would have been aggressive or as disrespectful to McCain in any way he would have lost some of the undecided because they would have viewed him as unstable.
Obama did exactly what he was suppose to do.

Just read that the FBI is investigating all ACORN offices in various cities. Taking posession of their computers, paperwork, etc to see if actual fraud has been going on.. They are wanting to issue new ballot sheets etc… This is alarming b/c “THEY” are trying to do any and everything to keep Obama out of the White House… I knew this would happen, now who knows how many votes will NOT COUNT and be thrown out b/c of this investigation going on. They are definitely trying to keep this man out of the The House, it sickens me to my damn stomach. @113–like #116 said, i think you were actually tuned out while the independents and undecided were tuned in and picked barack as the winner of the debate. barack held his own as only he can do and he didn’t attack mcsame because all the polls are showing that the american public views attacks negatively. he did what he needed to do while mcsame fluttered around like a plane with a stalled engine, trying to land. and he never did. barack is intelligent and strategic and knows that mere one upmanship is not going to win him the white house. it may not have been barack’s strongest showing (personally, i liked debate no. 2 better) but he definitely has mcsame on the ropes and if all he has going for him is joe the plumber, that is where he will remain.

Obama gets my vote, on POLICY/not just demeanor. I am a finance professional and I understand the significance of their economic plans and how they will affect the markets around the world. Other nations are doing what Obama is proposing right now to stave off the same kinds of issues we face. This is time for a “My brother’s keeper” philosophy (for all of you theologians out there) and not “Everyman for himself” like McCain proposes. You see, high profit earners are not being penalized so much as pulling their weight in a crisis. We have to understand that the least of us is the measure by which a nation is truly measured. Why is it that we will be willing to police the world but scoff at programs to eradicate poverty in our own country? Save me the tax and spend debate… because if we are not willing to do things different than the “bootstrap GOP” then we will be looking at something far worse than the Great Depression.
Now in the POLICY debate, McCain loses. He was so busy trying to poke holes in Obama’s plan that he failed to lay out the specifics of his own. How will you pay for it John? What will you sacrifice John? No Answer. All he did was pander to his base… more illicitly to the base nature of his base.
Wat about the fact that he too spoke at an ACORN event THIS YEAR? uuum we won’t talk about that…. for a fee…. nevermind.
K, without attacking the man on personality, his subject matter suffered. I was convinced last night, Obama should be President.
And for the record, anyone who diminishes a woman’s health and right to equal pay for equal work…. sorry. Game Over. I too am a Christian, but the bible I read says “let he who is without sin, cast the first stone”….

Pleassssssssssssssssssse READDDDDDDDDDDDD
You may already know this, so pass it on to someone who may not
know!
Pass this on…
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO KNOW…
For those of us who normally vote “Straight Democratic”, please pay close attention!!! !! I was
informed this weekend by a group of Obama volunteers that when voting for the
presidential candidate this November, you have to make sure you punch
Barack’s name first, then proceed to punch “Straight Democratic” or else the vote for the president
won’t count.
I’m not sure if any of you are aware of this, but we know they won’t tell us
this at the polls . Please make sure you inform others
This is confirmed to be true in a 2004 Snopes “Urban Legends” page
regarding the Bush/Cheney election!

@ 101 lower ur caps it doesn’t make me hear u anymore than i already cant
you sound just like a sheep. its ok to criticize the leader. when i said he needed to be aggressive i didn’t mean in a rowdy way. he needed to step his D up start answering questions more direct and quit trippin over his words. i felt he was under prepared and his stingers to McCain were deff overshadowed by the ones thrown at him. McCain spanked him when he called him out on taxin ppl and when he used one of his own supporters as a ploy, Joe the plumber. Obama didnt come back at mccain as hard as he should had. McCain deff had the upper hand in this debate and it was obvious.

FIRST IMA SAY GO OBAMA!
THAT DEBATE WAS BY FAR ALL OBAMAS.
ALL MCCAIN DID WAS TRY TO DEGRADE AND BELITTLE OBAMA WITH NEGATIVITY INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT THE ISSUES OF OUR CONTRY. EVEN AFTER OBAMA CLEARED THE AIR MCCAIN KEPT WITH HIS IGNORANCE.
SO FOR THOSE WHO SAY MCCAIN KILLED IT. YOUR BY FAR SO SCREWED IN THE HEAD. MCCAIN IS TRYING TO MAKE SURE THE RICH REPUBLICIANS STAY RICH AND DEMOCRATS GET KNOCKED INTO THE SLUMPS EVEN MORE BECAUSE OUR TAXES WILL BE RAISED EVEN MORE.
MCCAIN IS FULL OF IT. AND I HOPE YOU ALL VOTE WISELY. BECAUSE OBAMA FOR THE MOST PART SEEMS TO HAVE A STABLE PLAN THAT IS WORKED OUT AND FINE TUNED TO WORK OUT FOR EVERYONE.
IF YOUR VOTE WAS CHANGED BECAUSE OF SOME CHEAP SHOTS THAT MCCAIN MADE THEN SOMETHINGS WRONG. FOCUS ON THE ISSUES AND LET THAT BE YA GUIDE NOT HE SAID SHE SAID.

It was reminiscent of Al Gore’s sighing during his debate with George Bush in 2000, which many think contributed to his defeat.
Maybe I’m getting old, but I don’t remember that at all.
