♫ ALBUM REVIEW: BEYONCE - I AM… SASHA FIERCE

Monday, November 17, 2008

Beyonce gets a little conceptual and reveals a little bit of both sides on her third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce, which hits stores and online tomorrow, November 18th.

LISTEN UP:
♫ BEYONCE - DISAPPEAR
♫ BEYONCE - VIDEO PHONE
♫ BEYONCE - HALO

I Am… Sasha Fierce is probably some of Beyonce’s most impressive work to date. Much different from her previous releases, 2006’s B’Day or her acclaimed 2003 debut, Dangerously In Love, Beyonce explores uncharted territories, especially on the ballad-heavy, pop-driven I Am… side.

With the leaking of her first singles, “♫ If I Were A Boy” and “♫ Single Ladies,” bloggers, fans, stans and haters alike knew that it would be time for the Beyonce media blitz.

Collaborating with the likes of Ryan Tedder, (responsible for OneRepublic and Timbaland’s huge hit, “Apologzie,” as well as Leona Lewis’s “Bleeding Love”) on the second single, “Halo,” as well as Toby Cad, Amanda Ghost, and the production team known as Stargate, Beyonce really delivers some of her most straight-forward vocal performances ever, over beautifully produced tracks. Stand-out tracks from the I Am… side include the Tricky Stewart & The Dream-assisted “Smash Into You,” the airy and eerie “Satellites,” the huge popera, “Halo,” and the very understated beauty of “Disappear.”

Sasha Fierce was a little hard for me to get into at first. When Beyonce announced that this would be a more “dance”-driven side, I assumed Sasha would be offering up a flurry of bombastic, techno-driven Europop sounds much like the leak, “Beautiful Nightmare,” which was retooled and renamed “Sweet Dreams” for the album.

Instead, Beyonce taps into her more edgy, urban side on tracks like the Bangladesh-produced, Sean Garrett-penned “Diva,” her stab at Lil’ Wayne’s boast and gloat, “A Millie.” She chants: “Na-na-na, diva is a female version of a hustlaaaa…” and raps lines like, “Fifty million ’round the world and they say that I couldn’t get it/I done got so sick and filthy with Benjis, I can’t spend it!” as well as “Video Phone.” The high points on this side of the album, for me, however, lie in the techno-synth ode, “Radio,” the confidently pleading, “Hello,” and the Jim Jonsin/Rico Love knocker, “Sweet Dreams.”

All in all, I’m glad that Beyonce stepped it up and stepped out her shell a little bit for the album. She definitely put something on there for everyone, from your pop ballads, to your hood anthems and dance numbers. I Am… Sasha Fierce seems like it will turn out to be my favorite Beyonce effort yet.

Love the album. will cop a few copies for my car, my office and my lab. This is what happens when a Bee album drops. I been listening to that girl blow since I was 12 years old, now Im 23, in medical school and she is one of my biggest inspirations. Say what you want about it. Im doing okay for myself. People say she is arrogant and cocky, well she’s not, but even if she was, she can CAN be. She is a 27 year old legend whose voice alone makes her a gift to her fans. She inspires, is a great role model, classy and sexy all in one. She really is the women with everything; loved throughout the world and highly respected. Im proud of her and all of her accomplishments and even prouder to be a fan. Go B. ***Med Students for Beyonce*** a group of us will be gettin the album tomorow after class.

I normally do not comment on these types of post but I want to leave a comment for the buyers

How many of you guys live on your own? How many of you guys have a job? How many have kids or other responsibilities? I remember when the president elect in his speech in Tha Go said “Don’t just rely on your government to bail the economy out of this rut, you also have to do your part, be more frugal with your money if the need doesn’t match the means than you really don’t need it you just want it”

So, when you go to your favorite fast-food drive thru, Best Buy or Sears ask yourself one question: Do I recall NEED this or do I just WANT if so, can it wait ‘til later?

Not trying to knock Beyonce, Ludda or any other artist with albums coming out but ya’ll live the good life $20.00 bucks is going to hurt me more…

I love when people get so defensive about things. Brian said ‘haters’ he didn’t say ‘haters (I’m talking about Lady)”. HAHAHA! Hilarious. Continue. SMH

I actually like “Video Phone” somethiong about the song has me moving.
“Disappear” is sweet, cute a little too Destiny’s Child for me but I guess people will like it. I like most of what I’ve heard so far and I am excited about hearing the rest of her stuff. I think she gets better and better with each album.

I was watching the 2003-2004 Grammy’s I recored (yeah I kno I’m lame)…and I couldnt help be smile when babyface referred to Beyonce as Our New Queen. He knew then what I know now. Beyonce has raised the bar.

Can someone explain to me why Single Ladies wasn’t released as a single on iTunes? The video was, but not the song.
I’m going to support Bey and buy the album tomorrow when it comes out. However, I wasn’t really feeling what I heard so far. It will have to grow on me I guess.
I’m extremely disappointed that Sweet Dreams/Beautiful Nightmare was leaked a long time ago. It’s old by now but I guess it’s been reworked and I’ll have to listen to it. I loved it then and I hope a different version doesn’t ruin it for me.

I personally love “Halo” and for some reason even though I really don’t like the track for the past week I ve caught myself repeating ” diva is a female version of a hustla.” “Scared of Lonely” is sweet and tragic at the same time. Especially for me, my baby is getting ready to head to europe for 6 months and I am already feeling that sense of impending detachment. I have to give her her props for trying to develop her sound for today’s listeners without losing one’s identity. I like this better than the bullish women anthem’s of B-day this gives me more of the Dangerously in Love vibe. Congrats Mrs. Knowles- Fierce-Carter ow wateva!! ;)

I understand #19. Afetr reading tha one statement about the “fans and HATERS…” . What happened to the word “Critics”? Some of do have valuable discrepancies and even just mere opinions about Beyonce`, B, Bee, B. Miss Knowles, Mrs. Carter’s music (that’s for all the obsessed people- who go BEYOND the call of the “diehard” fan duty). Hell, people critiqued Mrs. Obama from head-to-toe, with no resolve, and you don’t see the secret service coming to hail bullets at their asses! Back down, bulldogs LMAO

I just had to laugh

I only like Halo. I think she will do aight, nothing like what she’s done in the past though. And of course they will say it’s do to the economy. That may be true, but for the most part the album is sub-par.

Single Ladies sounds like Upgrade You, Smash Into You is actually SMACK Into You by Jon McLaughlin, If I Was A Boy is from BC Jeans. Diva uses A Milli by Lil Wayne. How is this innovative, creative, stepping it up, out doing herself, others need to fall back, icon, legend Queen Bee material?!?!?!?!

It’s recycled bullshit and that’s MY opinion.

what makes you think that because I like the cd?

Actually the cd is very good the lyrics are personal on most songs and she stepped outside the box and made a great cd. People complained they were tried of the “booty shaking Bey” All the songs on I Am beyonce are good and heartfelt and her voice is beautiful. Now sometimes I love to dance and that where Single Ladies and Video Phone comes in. I love Ego because everyone feels like that at times. Hello is just the truth.

Beyonce is making money from her fans not her non fans, so to tell “haters” she is made $80 million last year, she is a diva…..this is because of her fans, so fans should feel stupid that she is taken your money because you choose to purchase multiple albums which is retarded because you are taking money from your pockets. Her haters may spend time on a blog talking about her but there is no money being given.

Beyonce’s album is fire!! There are multiple standout tracks on the album, and I feel she has really grown. Her vocals are even better, and I love that she recorded different types of sounds for this record. She excels whether she is on a ballad “Ave Maria”, “Broken Hearted Girl”, “Halo”, or a dance number “Radio” “Sweet Dreams”. Beyonce also does a lot of great midtempos on the album, I loved “Hello”, “Scared of Lonely”, as well as “Ego”. To me her whole album is standout, and I agree with Brian for the most part. Also her live performances this era are top notch, and above the rest. She gives her all, and if she is giving this much in performances of her first singles IIWAB and SL then I know the second and third singles will be amazing. Her artisty is undeniable this time around. I love everything about how the vision and execution of this project. Beyonce is an all around great artist, and I will definitely be picking up the album on tomorrow!

Also LOL @ people getting mad at Brian’s review because it is positive. He gave a review of the album based on his perception of it. I guess some people just hate seeing anything positive about an artist and their work. This is his review, put on his blog. I think it is very reflective of the work that Beyonce put out.

I listened to the cd. I don’t know if I can properly judge it yet, but on my first listen - I didnt even make it through all of it because it got a little boring for me. I like alot of different types of music and I like that Bey is trying to go in a different direction and please her fans that like the more pop side vs. the urban side..but Idk. Its like I’m so damn tired of her that I can’t even enjoy the song. For example the song smash into you, is a beautiful ballad and I know if someone else was singing it I’d probably be more into it because it’d be a new tone for my ear. So in a sense, I am saying that maybe I dislike her album because I’m tired of her. Not only that but alot of her songs sound like they couldve been rejects from Bday for instance Diva which reminds me of upgrade you pt 2. and single ladies which reminds me of get me bodied (in which let me say i LOVE the video & the dancing)… I think vocally, the album is beyond on point but alot of it sounds like or like her previous work…but whatever. Nothing will top her DIL album.

I listened to it today. A coworker bought on Saturday. I think the cd is okay.. It is not the best cd yet this year. I think there are a couple of songs that are standouts but it does sound like she is trying to hard to be a pop or white singer. Some of these Lisa Loeb Alanis Morrisette songs don’t work for Beyonce. I am still on the fence about buying it. Cos, it seems like a cd that I will have listen to more than once to get into.

Beyonce gave yall majority ballads in DIL, people cried out there was not enough uptempo songs.

So she gave yall all up tempo in Bday, ppl cried out it was too urban and lact substance

Now beyonce is giving yall pop songs, urban bangers, and ALOT of meaningful material and people calling it boring? Like seriously, what the fuk do yall want. I would appreciate it if ppl just say hey I dont like beyonce so I would never like anything she does, as suppose to downing the album and calling it trash, because god knows this new album has songs that are at the top of the pack in terms of production and writing.

All the people talking about picking up several copies work for Beyonce and all they have to do is swing around in their chairs and get them off the table. I’m sure they are free for employees. Well maybe not (especially with the Knowles). But I’m sure they can at least get them for half price or buy one get one free.

She can sing and she’s amazing… BUT… BUT… BUT… This album is 100% shit… It’s total junk and isn’t worth a value meal at McDonalds… This time I feel she just fooled out… 2008 has been the year of flops. It amazes me how the things that happens whenever Beyonce knowles-Carter is discussed. You have peeps posting for fans to jump off a cliff and that they should get their IQ checked. Whether a person think Beyonce is doing great music, the truth is, good music is subjective so please don’t be condescending. This goes both Bey fans too. Anyway, this is going to be long so bare with me.

Here is what I think of the double album: My viewpoint is that Contemporary R&B needs more variety as far as adding genres to progress it and this album will do it. Bey don’t have the “prototypical” R&B voice so this is the kind of album that fits best with her voice. A lil bit of this, a lil of that. She’s so versatile she can sing the phone book and give a vocal clinic. Ave Maria is great in that it shows off her classical training. Halo is so passsionate and intense especially for a ballad. I love Smash into you. Learn to be Lonely is also intense like Halo but with a different sound. Still love it. Broken Hearted is a strong song also. The only song that don’t grab me on the Beyoncé side is Satelites. However, it is still very high quality. 4.5 out of 5

As for the Sasha CD, the thing that surprises me is that it is not as Uptempo as I expected it to be. Diva is an ear catcher, and Single Ladies is also an ear-catcher and the lyrics are deeper than you think(Listen to the Bridge). Ego is great. I love the Wordplay(It’s too big, it’s too wide, it’s too strong, it’s tough, it won’t fit, cause he got a big ego). Not to mention, since the Beyonce CD has Halo, it is the song that promotes the devilish, egotistical side of Bey’s performing alter ego which is what the Sasha CD is all about. Video Phone, I could take it or leave it. Sweet Dreams, I don’t like that song. I didn’t like it when it was a demo and I thought that if they were going to put it on the album, at least change the production. They didn’t. Don’t like it. It seem Bey was trying to hold her voice back to fit the weakness of the production. Other than that, the CD is good but not as good as the Beyonce CD. I give it 4 out of 5 which means, overall it is a 4.25 out of 5.

One last thing, anyone who wanted a “deep autobiographical” effort, is not going to get it. The closest we will get is Ave Maria, song dedictate to Jay and their love. But I get the concept: Show that I am a normal woman, maybe even a lil boring away from the stage while a laced-front, ball of energy on the stage. So for that alone, I appreciate it. It is good music, but the kind of album like B’day, those who love it will love and those who hate it, will hate it.

This album is actually really good, the ballads are amazin, disappear, ave maria, halo, just beautiful…. this is the new diection, you would never see her in the past recording songs like if i were a boy, satellites or smash into you, or more pop international sound like radio or sweet dreams.
The up-mid tempos, ego, the part when she is singin with the piano is BEAUTIFUL radio, sweet drems, video phone…. all nice! Its different from her previous work and the lyrics are great too.
I am buying it.

Now, this week, If I were a boy will be number one in the BILLBOARD HOT 100, I am telling you this, from what I saw on itunes, its obvious, next week is a takeover.
Now concerning Single ladies, they release it on tuesday so expect Beyoncé to have a number 1 album, 2 singles in the top 10 for the next week. I saw Dangerously in love too, is re-selling really good and is in the top 10 amazingly!

Brian, the ‘haters’ comment is funny lol you’re seem to be such a Beyoncé stan lol but I thank concreteloop for the posivity in the blog and the hype around Beyoncé, you guys are doing the damn thing to promote the Knowles!

This is the first album of hers that has had to grow on me. I remember when I heard B’Day for the first time I couldnt stop listening to it, it blew me away! lol. IMO I think is was her best signature sound so far, still outshining this. magnum opus ish!

This album sounds like it was set up for her and Bey just threw on her lacefront rolled up and did her vocals in day and scrammed. It is severely underproduced, IT sounds like it took two weeks to do, and B’Day sounds like it took as long this. I remember her saying she wanted to be an icon and not just follow the crowd, but this sounds like a complete 180 from what she wanted! I apprecaite her doing some new stuff though “Diva” is that tune! but overall im still a little confused. I know she wasnt ready for quiet storm, and I hope she doesnt go there for another 20 years! Keep shakin girl

Now, on to my sweet Beyonce…This woman put her heart into this album. She has proven to me why she is so admired around the world. How can someone call this album boring, but listen to Jennifer Hudson’s album and say it’s entertaining. And the ppl that are callin the 2nd disc ‘ghetto trash”…it’s for the club. When I go to the clubs I dont wanna hear no freakin slow ass song. I wanna dance. And thats when they played Diva everyone started moving..it was crunk. @121..

THANK YOU! I’ve been saying this for ages. And they do the same thing with her pictures. When she gets all glammed up they consider it gaudy, overdone, or drag queen-ish. But when she gets less dresssed and made up they say she’s boring as hell and has no flavor. WTF? Beyonce can never, ever, win with some people. No matter what she does she will never get an approval from them. Beyonce has done almost everything in the damn book to put a smile on these haters faces but she can still never win. The only option she has left is to whip out a banjo and call it a day. There’s nothing left for her to accomplish to make these ‘nonbelievers’ complement her.

Anywho, I will be getting the album no doubt. Some of the songs still have to grow on me but overall I would rate the cd an 8/10. I already got the whole thing on my iPod and in my car. Limewire is very useful.

BTW: She looks FABULOUS!

“her album is horrible. beyonce is probably the most overrated artist on the face of the earth. her stans should jump off a cliff and land on one of her heels.”
^^^^^^^^^
ROFL. haha i don’t think they should, but that was pretty funny…. :)

ok i’m not a fan, stan, hater…or whatever else. so here’s my review of the album….i feel that the album is definitely above average, but i was expecting a classic album…and i think this album missed the mark when it comes to that…if a new artist came with this album it would be a good album, but since it’s beyonce, we hold her at a higher standard and rightfully so. i personally don’t care for IIWAB but SL is definitely growing on me after seeing the video…standouts include halo, sweet dreams, and disappear. she was clearly trying to cater to many audiences with this album and i think she did, but i don’t think this is an album we will be talking about many years from now. overall i give the album 3.8/5 stars.

Beyonce Forever

Last thing….I love beyonce’s sounds, I love Jazzy’s sound, I love Brandy’s sound….This are all different artist, why would we want them to sound the same or sing about the same thing. “Real music” (whatever that is) she expand beyond ‘Love and pain. I mean damn….can some music jus be fun. That’s why I love beyonce, she knows that her fans like to have fun. When she puts ona concert, her fan are on their feet dancing and excited.

I like so many artist, but if they all sang about the same thing, I would be soooo bored. Oh BTW my faves are

1) Ego
2) Hello
3) Halo
4) Why Don’t You Love Me
5) Single Ladies
6) Scared of Lonely
7) Diva
8) Stop Signs (dont think it made the album)
9) Sweet Dreams
Ok the whole damn album….but esp like Ego and Hello

I actually think that Brian’s “I Am…Sasha Fierce” album review was pretty informative and overall a very well written piece. I don’t think it was biased or unprofessional at all. In making the “stans & haters” comment, it just acknowledged that fact that people are just generally checkin’ for Beyonce. Furthermore, the statement only reinerated the influence of her two current singles, “If I Were A Boy” & “Single Ladies”. He didn’t run-on with his own opinions, he simply stated the obvious.

Just my thoughts.

I get so tired of people calling others “haters” because they give their personal opinions. Some of you guy’s really need to grow up and stop acting like you’re 12. I swear some of you act as if Beyonce’s paying your mortgage or something. It’s either you like this album or you don’t…I DON’T (nothing else needed to say)!

HATER: Never points out the STRENGTHS of the album

STAN: Never points out the WEAKNESSES of the album

Fan: Believes in Beyonce no matter how many mistakes she makes

Not a Fan: Doesn’t like Beyonce and never will

Critic: objectively reviews the album and notes strengths AS WELL as weaknesses

So if you have NOTHING good to say about Beyonce, I’m sorry to crush your bubble but that means you are a HATER.

i don’t really agree with this review while the album is good i dnt think its her best work the best tracks for me are broken hearted girl from the i am side and diva from the sasha side although the best song is scared of lonely from the deluxe edition but for me her best album is dangerously in love she can’t top that.

Its bullshit to say she doesnt have passion. Who the hell wouldnt go out and make money for it. The things she does, you have to have passion for because if she didnt she wouldnt be lasting as long as she did. Anyways i like the i am mellow side better than the sasha fierce side. im loving dissappear!
