AWARENESS: SERENA WILLIAMS OPENS UP SCHOOL IN KENYA

Saturday, November 15, 2008

International tennis player Serena Williams (pictured with Kenya’s education minister Sam Ongeri) cuts the ribbon at the Serena Williams Secondary School in Matooni, Kenya on Friday afternoon.

Built through a partnership between the Build African Schools initiative and Hewlett Packard, the school is designed to empower African students through education.

We are indeed honored to have Ms Williams visit Kenya at this momentous time in American history when we have a new President elect who has roots in Kenya,” said Mr Dickson Mutaiti, the Director of Projects Build African Schools in Kenya.

I know y’all are thinking it, so I’m just gonna say it: saggy boobs suck. And what does she have on? And I don’t need folks telling to STFU because she’s doing something positive because I already know that……….I can read. Big ups to her for helping out and all, but why would she go there looking like that? if she were anyone else…………name unmentioned, everyone would be dogging that outfit.

Lol don’t we already have schools in the US? I mean education is probably more valued here and way more accessible, whereas its kind of available and even looked down upon for girls to go to school.

I know it’s for a great cause, but WHY does everyone feel the need to open schools in AFRICA? why not, asia or europe, latin america? Africa is defintely not the worst place on the planet! I feel like everyone thinks africa is so bad, and poor, when it really isn’t…. I’m glad Oprah and Serena went out of their way to this though…..

@ #39, they open up schools in countries in Africa because African plight is usually ignored in the media. Not to say that there isn’t a need in the US for school, in Compton, Oakland, down south or whatever. But we actually have schools here, they just need funding. While in Africa, in some rural places there schools but these schools are usually in one room, they share one notebook, pencil etc. My parents are African and they’ve told me stories about going to school as children, and the simple things they lacked that we take for granted. I think this is wonderful. We all can do our part here and abroad so that all children have an opportunity to succeed. Education is key.

I am just saying that it is great to see sumone do sumthing thoughtful and nice. So why do people feel the need to disrespect what she has on or looks like. She is helping others when many don’t and that should be respected. So instead of worring about how she is dressed or what she looks like focus on the good that she is doing the lives she will be changing.

For all those who are complaining that why don’t people open up schools in other continents or the U.S, What difference does it make??? Human beings are human beings, whether you are helping one person, or millions of people, you are STILL HELPING!!! And whether you are doing it in Pakistan, Australia or an African country, someone somewhere is still being assisted, thats ALL that matters. Just be grateful that there are human beings out there considerate enough to care about other human beings less fortunate than themselves, be it on the other side of the world or in their own backyards.

Hmm…#39, Mim, you are delusional and uniintelligent. Do you know that the IMF and World Bank actually FORGAVE the debts of a number of Asian and Latin American countries, but no African countries whatsoever? Africa anyway, is the cradle of civilization, and when Africa gets right, then this entire WORLD can get back on track…know your history and you global economics. Other countries may be worse off then Africa, but Africa isn’t doing so swell too. We are dealing with BRAIN DRAIIN, like people coming to the U.S. and working here and not ever going back. Are you African? Do you ever plann on going back to help? If not, shut the hell up and let somebody who is helping, do it. You haven’t even assessed the situation, and you want to complain when someone is doing something to benefit the Motherland. I hope someone slaps you silly with wisdom one day…I know I just cyber slapped you. Hahah…ugh! it just makes me angry…

back to the post though….

Serena, this OUTSTANDING AND PHENOMENAL!! i love what you did, what you are doing, and will do. At the end of the day, its not about looks and clothes, but its about educating the mind and helping those in need. God bless you, Serena, we need more of this. And those of you who are hating, sayhing she should’ve doine this in the U.S…..WE GOT A BLACK PRESDIENT NOW AND YOU STILL NOT HAPPY??? There is absolutely no excuse for not going to school because “the Man” aian’t holding us down anymore.

@53 ur right, ppl think that small minded , why do we care about her dress and look , some of these blogers must be under 13 , because a real & mature adult individual could careless about fashion ,,,with this particular story , i am happy that Serena has choose this path , and i hope that more of us will ……She is one of my HERO’S , and I would love to one day visit Africa . , and for the ppl that asked why not help for the US schools or other COUNTRIES , thats how you can help , get out and VOLUNTEER , VOLUNTEER , expresses ur concerns by service . Make a commitment today and start , make a plan for 2009or today , AND start using the power of ur minds , write ur politicians , about the problems in ur school while ur VOLUNTEERING,.,, Write ur Celebrities ask them , how are they given BACK to change the lives of other’s ,,,,Encourage ur local churchs to do more , AND for the fashion lover’s , take ur unwanted clothen to the GOODWILL , CENTERS in ur Communities . Leaders, like Oprah , Serena , Obama , can not do it all .

My question is what’s HOLDING U BACK ? ?
