BOOK RELEASE: MIDNIGHT BY SISTER SOULJAH

Friday, November 21, 2008

midnight.gif

Am I the only one who didn’t know New York Times bestselling author Sister Souljah released a new book this month? If I am, oh well, better late than never.

MIDNIGHT is the follow-up to Sister Souljah’s successful 1999 debut, The Coldest Winter Ever. Following the popular character MIDNIGHT, it’s more of the background story of his life. FYI: As reviewer mentioned, if you are looking for a sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever, you will be very disappointed. Though the story is about the character Midnight from the Coldest Winter Ever, this book is about his life before the Santiagos. As a matter of fact, the oldest he gets in this book is the age of fourteen.

Atria Books launched MIDNIGHT on November 4th with a major national publicity tour and a multi-media promotional campaign. MIDNIGHT hit #7 on the New York Times bestsellers list after its first week on-sale.

LOVED “COLDEST WINTER.” I AM HALFWAY THRU “MIDNIGHT” AND SOULJAH REALLY DID HER HOMEWORK ON ISLAMIC CULTURE. ITS BITTERSWEET BECAUSE YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIM AND THE SANTIAGO’S BUT THIS IS GOOD THOUGH. SOULJAH IS JUST AS SHARP AND DIRECT.

I HATE THAT SHE GAVE US AN IMAGE OF HIM THOUGH. I LIKE ‘MY’ MIDNIGHT BETTER- LMAO

@ 2. No Disrespect was the shit. I might have to go and buy “Midnight” though because I looooved The Coldest Winter, I read it sooo many years ago, and I know people who read it for the first timelike last year. I’m looking at them like Oh Em Gee, where have you been?

What are you talking about #1? She wasn’t kickin’ up nothing that wasn’t the truth. No rappers have been killed yet for all the trash talking they do about women, no they’be been killed for their own foolishness which is probrably what Sister Souljah was talking about, lol…so sad but true-you can’t hide from the truth. Barack Obama has been elected president of the US so maybe he’ll inspire the brothas who need it-as we’ve recently learned anything is possible.

I finished this book a week ago and I liked it, I think. It got a little crazy at the end and the last page had me going WTF? Anywho I would read the next book if there is one and I believe there will be.

I hate the pictures too my Midnight was way hotter. Then again he is only fourteen in the book.

I can remember when I read the coldest winter ever. The book had me so wrapped up that I just read the whole thing the day I bought it. It was so good and Winter was so wild. I always wanted to hear more about Midnight sort of like his point of view of the same story and then whatever came next. She made him sound so fine and so strong in the first book. HONEYBOO!

I Love Her!! She is the Truth

Friday, November 21, 2008 /

I Love Sista Souljah. The first book i read from her was “The Coldest Winter Ever” and i truly loved that book. Whoever has not read the book yet it’s definately not too late to do so! Her Second book “No Disrespect” is one of my Fav’s also. In this book she talked about alot of Real life Situations that We face as an African American People and i found this book to be really inspirational and Powerful. I recommend this book to anyone that love’s to read like myself and jus to anyone that is a fan of her work.

When “Midnight” came out i was sooo happy to go and get my copy and i thought that other people would feel the same way but that’s not how it was. I was reading some of the comments that the readers left on sites like Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com and i was really upset. The Readers were expecting the continuation to “The Coldest Winter Ever” and it just hurt me by reading the comments. Some people were down right Rude and Ugly, but hey I guess when it comes to someone as GREAT and POSITIVE as Siata Souljah is There will always be the Haters!!

She is a very positive person that has something REAL to talk about and i will always be a fan of her Work!!!!

*The Coldest Winter Ever” Movie would be Hot!! I know people were taliking about it Years and Years ago but i hope that she does decide to come out with a movie really soon. I would love that!!!!!!!

MS TRUTH

While reading the book I realized nothing was a surprise. Midnight followed a standard love story with little turmoil or drama. I would have liked to see him buck the path and fall for Sudana. This would have been a better outcome because we could have seen a struggle with his religious beliefs and the want for different love. However the minute he fell (blindly) in love with Akemi the book became boring and predictable. I started skipping sentences then whole paragraphs.

Within the book there is a lot of degrading comments on Black American women. Even to a point of saying that all Black Women in American have no class, uniqueness or common sense. This book gives you the impression that any women not of the Muslim faith is a waste of space on the earth. I am sure the audience Sista Souljah was trying to get to IS NOT the same readers of Coldest. If you want to feel beat down about being a Black American woman take a read (we have no hope by the book).

The big difference is Coldest was a page turner. Each chapter revealed something new about Winter and her needs. Midnight was boring and very generic. Even his interaction with the community could have been a bit more developed.

Oh only mention of Santiago is the Baller with the nicest car and the 24k baby show pendant. So faint it was almost unnecessary to mention.

We waited ten years to receive no stellar work. Very disappointed.

AFTER READING THE COLDEST WINTER EVER AND NO DISRESPECT, I WAS ANXIOUS FOR MIDNIGHT. ALTHOUGH IT WASNT WHAT I EXPECTED I BELIEVE SISTER SOULJAH IS TRYING TO DEVELOP AN INTRODUCTION OF MORE PREQUAL AND SEQUALS TO COME DERIVING FROM THE COLDEST WINTER EVER. ALTHOUGH, THE BOOK STOPS AT MIDNIGHT BEING AGE 14, IF GIVES US INSIST TO WHY MIDNIGHT WAS SUCH A STRONG SOLIDER FOR SANTIAGO FAMILY. IT ALSO EXPLAINS ALOT WHY HE WOULD NEVER GIVE WINTER ANY PLAY!!! THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!

@ #1. Jscene

What women fail to realize is that most men don’t listen or even care about the things that women like Souljah have to say…be it truth or extreme! It’s just like watching Oprah! Sister Souljah, Oprah, and Missy can say whatever they want to say! Men are more tuned into people like Katt Williams, Patrice O’neal, Louis KC and Tony Roberts!

The book was long for no reason I felt that she gave to much detail where it wasn’t needed. The Akeni thing pissed me off I wanted him to get wit Bangs (I wont say to much about her cuz that would ruin the best part of the book) even with his beliefs she needed him way more. The end of the book has me calling SISTER SOULJAH everything but a sista I was heated I was expecting so much more and got well… CRAP!
512 pages and only about 100 were worth reading!

The sad part the publishing company needed to make money off of it. So why not mislead the public and say it was a prequel to the book. The one thing I dont like is Sister Souljah’s place in the black community and all she claims she stands for and she would allow them to mislead everyone. She could have easily put a blurb or the synopsis on the back stating that it has nothing to do with Winter or the Santiago’s instead she went along with it for money. We are all in a recession and people running out buying books and these authors are frauds, and that damn book is 20 something dollars! I am an avid reader have been for the last 15 years and theres only a select group of authors I make sure I purchase. Looking for good stories try Al-Saadiq Banks, Endy, Crystal Lacy, Winslow, Dywane Birch. I just read a new author out of Texas his name is R. Trent Rose really good story.

OMG!!!! I’m freaking happy! I always wondered about him (Midnight)…his character in the Coldest Winter Ever was very mysterious! But, Sister Souljah had me at ‘No Disrespect’ I was still in high school! After reading that book I was no longer in name brands I went straight ‘natural’ my whole attitude changed! I’m going to have to get this book as a treat for myself; last book I read was From Cornel West: Race Matters this will be a nice break from non fiction

Again, you had me at ‘No Disrespect’ :)

If you are looking for the “Sequel” to the Coldest Winter Ever, then this is not it…

This Book is in Re: To His life prior to the Santiago….

I still bought it but AOL black voices and other sites mislead hundreds of readers and now the book is getting bad review….

To each is own, but if your looking 4 WINTER its not happening!

I enjoyed reading her books in the past so no reason I wouldn’t check this one out…

Anyway, I think Sista Souljah tells it like it is about black women from her point of view and experiences and if you’ve ever heard her speak in the past nothing has changed about that. She feels very strongly and has always been very opinionated about her feelings about black women and the muslim religion nothing new there.

I read Coldest so long ago, but I still remember that book vividly, and I still see Rosario Dawson in the role of Winter. I thought Will and Jada had purchase the movie rights to this book a long time ago. However, I don’t know that a movie could ever do the book justice if it didn’t stick closely to the original story line.

I’m going to buy and read Midnight - behind Winter, he was the character that intrigued me the most. I think it will be interested to see what made him the man he was in “Coldest Winter Ever.”

I finished this book 2 weeks ago and it was not a good read. 7 hours of my life in total wasted. The book had no real strong plot and it portrays Black American Women in a very negative. i really had no interest in reading a graphic sex scene involving 2 14yr old kids

this must be the coninutation of the character midnight in “The Coldest Winter Ever”. I can see why she did that because when he was telling his life story to Winter it sound like it was going to a continuation of his story being in a noverl. Well I’m interested and would like to read it!

I think there should be “the Coldest Winter Ever” part two. I would love to see whats up or what happened to Winter. She should be getting out of prison soon. I always said I wish she would turn CWE into a book however I never knew so many people felt the same and Will and Jada actually wanted to do just that! I ‘m a bit skeptical about Midnight I usually never go off of another’s opinion whether something is good or bad but must admit Midnight was mad interesting in CWE so if this has nothing to do with it I don’t think I’m that interested

There is not going to be a part 2 of the coldest winter ever! I bought midnight the day it came out, its good! but nothing like The coldest winter ever it only goes up to he turns 14 before he starts working with winter family the santiagos but he falls in love but the girls ends up getting taking away and he goes to look for her and that how it ends, so it looks like it will be another part 2 of the book midnight

I HEARD THAT WILL & JADA WERE SUPPOSED TO WORK ON THE COLDEST WINTER EVER MOVIE, BUT THAT WAS A WHILE BACK… I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT… WHO COULD U GUYS SEE PLAYING WINTER???

BACK THEN, I SAID TO MYSELF AALIYAH… CUZ THO SHE WASN’T EVIL, I’M SURE SHE COULD HAVE PLAYED THAT PART WITH HER GREAT ACTING & PLUS SHE WAS GORGEOUS ENOUGH TO PLAY WINTER’S CHARACTER…. BUT WITH TODAY’S YOUNG ACTRESSES, NOT SO SURE WHO NOW….

#25 Preach on!! I cosign with you!!

The book was okay. It wasnt bad and it wasnt good. I read all different kinds of books and I have a lot of respect for Sistah Soulja but this just didnt work for me. I dont know if I was expecting more drama, a better plot or just an overall purpose but I must admit I was disappointed. Someone on the comments mentioned that they didnt want to read a sex scene between 14 year olds and thats real shyt. I will say that it was informative because I had no idea how muslims think and behave but I was a little hurt by the portrayal of black women. I dont wanna sound too negative and if you like to read you will enjoy the book for the simple fact that you can tell she did her research and you will learn so much about the Islam culture.

Overall C -

Thanks to all those that liked my book review #16. I am a “reader” I will stalk barnes & noble, amazon, and the library to catch a good read. I had realistic hopes for this book. I am not too sure if this book was written in haste but it is lacking some very important features. I hope that Sista Souljah will correct this with her next book. Usually reading the original (Coldest Winter Ever) can spark much needed direction and clarity.

MICKEY

Friday, November 21, 2008 /

I read all the time and it normally takes me no longer than 2 days to read a book. However this book too a full week for me to get through and I was determined to read it since I had spent my hard earned $20 on it.

To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. I was very disgusted by the references made about black women and men. Although in some instances they may have been true statements, they do not apply to us all. And while I do know that this is a work of fiction, art does imitate life. The book lacked movement and momentum that was felt while reading Coldest so many years ago. By itself the book could be considered a decent (and I use this term loosely) read. However, by connecting the book to Coldest and using that as a marketing tool, Sista Soulja basically set me up for failure.

It is extremely hard for me to believe that a 7-15 yr old boy did all of the things that Midnight did plus did them for the reasons that he did. It is also equally hard for me to believe that this young boy who has been in America for several years is not majorly influenced by things that he sees or hears that go against what he was taught in Africa. Also, the communication gap between him and Akemi was not realistic to me. Sorry

Last but not least, there is a cliff hanger which means that she must plan to have a sequel. WHY??

I will read it though because what MIdnight is saying (Amazon) is deep. Barack may be in office, but if it not in a MF to do anything positive, then it’s not in them.
