Am I the only one who didn’t know New York Times bestselling author Sister Souljah released a new book this month? If I am, oh well, better late than never.
MIDNIGHT is the follow-up to Sister Souljah’s successful 1999 debut, The Coldest Winter Ever. Following the popular character MIDNIGHT, it’s more of the background story of his life. FYI: As reviewer mentioned, if you are looking for a sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever, you will be very disappointed. Though the story is about the character Midnight from the Coldest Winter Ever, this book is about his life before the Santiagos. As a matter of fact, the oldest he gets in this book is the age of fourteen.
Atria Books launched MIDNIGHT on November 4th with a major national publicity tour and a multi-media promotional campaign. MIDNIGHT hit #7 on the New York Times bestsellers list after its first week on-sale.

UM, SHE’S STILL ALIVE!!! I WOULD HAVE SWORN SOME BLACK DUDE WOULD HAVE KILLED HER A LONG TIME AGO AS MUCH DUST SHE WAS KICKIN UP ABOUT THE BROTHAS…..
My girlfriend just finished this and she liked it! My fave of course is ‘No Disrespect’…
LOVED “COLDEST WINTER.” I AM HALFWAY THRU “MIDNIGHT” AND SOULJAH REALLY DID HER HOMEWORK ON ISLAMIC CULTURE. ITS BITTERSWEET BECAUSE YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HIM AND THE SANTIAGO’S BUT THIS IS GOOD THOUGH. SOULJAH IS JUST AS SHARP AND DIRECT.
I HATE THAT SHE GAVE US AN IMAGE OF HIM THOUGH. I LIKE ‘MY’ MIDNIGHT BETTER- LMAO
not a good read at all. wonder why a movie for coldest winter ever wasn’t made.
@ 2. No Disrespect was the shit. I might have to go and buy “Midnight” though because I looooved The Coldest Winter, I read it sooo many years ago, and I know people who read it for the first timelike last year. I’m looking at them like Oh Em Gee, where have you been?
lol
What are you talking about #1? She wasn’t kickin’ up nothing that wasn’t the truth. No rappers have been killed yet for all the trash talking they do about women, no they’be been killed for their own foolishness which is probrably what Sister Souljah was talking about, lol…so sad but true-you can’t hide from the truth. Barack Obama has been elected president of the US so maybe he’ll inspire the brothas who need it-as we’ve recently learned anything is possible.
This is definitely going on my x-mas break reading list!!
I finished this book a week ago and I liked it, I think. It got a little crazy at the end and the last page had me going WTF? Anywho I would read the next book if there is one and I believe there will be.
I hate the pictures too my Midnight was way hotter. Then again he is only fourteen in the book.
Is the movie for the “Coldest Winter Ever” coming out any time soon??? We’ve waited 10yrs for this movie. SMH
OMG!! OMG!! I BEEN WAITIN’ ON THIS!! SHE’S HAD MY ASS IN LIMBO SO LONG SINCE “THE COLDEST WINTER EVER”(THAT’S MY SHIT), I MUST GO PURCHASE THIS ASAP!
OKAY, MAYBE NOT. I GUESS I GOT EXCITED TOO SOON. DIDN’T LOOK AT THE REVIEW
The Coldest Winter Ever will go down as one of the best books ever. I am going to have to get this one. I want to see the movie.
I can remember when I read the coldest winter ever. The book had me so wrapped up that I just read the whole thing the day I bought it. It was so good and Winter was so wild. I always wanted to hear more about Midnight sort of like his point of view of the same story and then whatever came next. She made him sound so fine and so strong in the first book. HONEYBOO!
I’m reading “The Coldest Winter Ever” right now lol, Kinda late but when the book came out I was only 9, so I wouldnt dare read something like this book then! Anyway, I want to read “Midnight”.
I Love Sista Souljah. The first book i read from her was “The Coldest Winter Ever” and i truly loved that book. Whoever has not read the book yet it’s definately not too late to do so! Her Second book “No Disrespect” is one of my Fav’s also. In this book she talked about alot of Real life Situations that We face as an African American People and i found this book to be really inspirational and Powerful. I recommend this book to anyone that love’s to read like myself and jus to anyone that is a fan of her work.
When “Midnight” came out i was sooo happy to go and get my copy and i thought that other people would feel the same way but that’s not how it was. I was reading some of the comments that the readers left on sites like Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com and i was really upset. The Readers were expecting the continuation to “The Coldest Winter Ever” and it just hurt me by reading the comments. Some people were down right Rude and Ugly, but hey I guess when it comes to someone as GREAT and POSITIVE as Siata Souljah is There will always be the Haters!!
She is a very positive person that has something REAL to talk about and i will always be a fan of her Work!!!!
*The Coldest Winter Ever” Movie would be Hot!! I know people were taliking about it Years and Years ago but i hope that she does decide to come out with a movie really soon. I would love that!!!!!!!
While reading the book I realized nothing was a surprise. Midnight followed a standard love story with little turmoil or drama. I would have liked to see him buck the path and fall for Sudana. This would have been a better outcome because we could have seen a struggle with his religious beliefs and the want for different love. However the minute he fell (blindly) in love with Akemi the book became boring and predictable. I started skipping sentences then whole paragraphs.
Within the book there is a lot of degrading comments on Black American women. Even to a point of saying that all Black Women in American have no class, uniqueness or common sense. This book gives you the impression that any women not of the Muslim faith is a waste of space on the earth. I am sure the audience Sista Souljah was trying to get to IS NOT the same readers of Coldest. If you want to feel beat down about being a Black American woman take a read (we have no hope by the book).
The big difference is Coldest was a page turner. Each chapter revealed something new about Winter and her needs. Midnight was boring and very generic. Even his interaction with the community could have been a bit more developed.
Oh only mention of Santiago is the Baller with the nicest car and the 24k baby show pendant. So faint it was almost unnecessary to mention.
We waited ten years to receive no stellar work. Very disappointed.
Yeah you are late ! LOL
! ! ! !
I heard that it has nothing to do with the Coldest Winter Ever so why in the hell they saying it is a sequel. I wonder about Winter sometimes ! ! ! !
Waste of money and precious time. Could have been better spent doing my nails.
#15, No Disrespect was her first book
AFTER READING THE COLDEST WINTER EVER AND NO DISRESPECT, I WAS ANXIOUS FOR MIDNIGHT. ALTHOUGH IT WASNT WHAT I EXPECTED I BELIEVE SISTER SOULJAH IS TRYING TO DEVELOP AN INTRODUCTION OF MORE PREQUAL AND SEQUALS TO COME DERIVING FROM THE COLDEST WINTER EVER. ALTHOUGH, THE BOOK STOPS AT MIDNIGHT BEING AGE 14, IF GIVES US INSIST TO WHY MIDNIGHT WAS SUCH A STRONG SOLIDER FOR SANTIAGO FAMILY. IT ALSO EXPLAINS ALOT WHY HE WOULD NEVER GIVE WINTER ANY PLAY!!! THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ!
Nice review #16, you should post that on borders/amazon too
@ #1. Jscene
What women fail to realize is that most men don’t listen or even care about the things that women like Souljah have to say…be it truth or extreme! It’s just like watching Oprah! Sister Souljah, Oprah, and Missy can say whatever they want to say! Men are more tuned into people like Katt Williams, Patrice O’neal, Louis KC and Tony Roberts!
I haven’t read this book in 10 yrs….remind me who was Midnight?
The book was long for no reason I felt that she gave to much detail where it wasn’t needed. The Akeni thing pissed me off I wanted him to get wit Bangs (I wont say to much about her cuz that would ruin the best part of the book) even with his beliefs she needed him way more. The end of the book has me calling SISTER SOULJAH everything but a sista I was heated I was expecting so much more and got well… CRAP!
512 pages and only about 100 were worth reading!
The sad part the publishing company needed to make money off of it. So why not mislead the public and say it was a prequel to the book. The one thing I dont like is Sister Souljah’s place in the black community and all she claims she stands for and she would allow them to mislead everyone. She could have easily put a blurb or the synopsis on the back stating that it has nothing to do with Winter or the Santiago’s instead she went along with it for money. We are all in a recession and people running out buying books and these authors are frauds, and that damn book is 20 something dollars! I am an avid reader have been for the last 15 years and theres only a select group of authors I make sure I purchase. Looking for good stories try Al-Saadiq Banks, Endy, Crystal Lacy, Winslow, Dywane Birch. I just read a new author out of Texas his name is R. Trent Rose really good story.
OMG!!!! I’m freaking happy! I always wondered about him (Midnight)…his character in the Coldest Winter Ever was very mysterious! But, Sister Souljah had me at ‘No Disrespect’ I was still in high school! After reading that book I was no longer in name brands I went straight ‘natural’ my whole attitude changed! I’m going to have to get this book as a treat for myself; last book I read was From Cornel West: Race Matters this will be a nice break from non fiction
Again, you had me at ‘No Disrespect’
Hold your horses people….
If you are looking for the “Sequel” to the Coldest Winter Ever, then this is not it…
This Book is in Re: To His life prior to the Santiago….
I still bought it but AOL black voices and other sites mislead hundreds of readers and now the book is getting bad review….
To each is own, but if your looking 4 WINTER its not happening!
I’m glad she’s still writing, i like her style. I will pick it up this weekend.
lol @ long for no reason…..Well I must say The Coldest Winter Ever is one of the best books ever written…. and i was expeccting a sequel to that…I’m still going to buy the new book of course because I am a fan. I saw Sister Souljah speak about 2 years ago…loved it…..but yea glad another book from her is finally out!
I am a fan of SIsta Souljah as well and yes No Disrespect and CWE was the isht but this book is pure d WACK i cant believe it was so wack i keep lookn 4 the plot the action the actual story line and there was none if I woulda know it was just going to be about a Muslim boy falln for a japenese girl boring boring yada yada i would have never read it the only good thing i got from the book was more knowledge of the Muslim religion and how they respect and honor there women we def need more of that over here in America because the way they treat their women is the way its suppose to be that was beautiful how he loved and honored his mom and waited until marriage 2 have sex with her
#16/MS TRUTH, why the hell are you telling us the whole story.
And I thought it was released on Nov. 8, but anyway I want to read it.
@ #9 (SexyQB) – I can’t believe we have been waiting that long for the movie. I still remember reading that HBO had given Jada the green light to proceed with the project. Wonder what happened with that? Glad to see I’m not the only one waiting on the ‘movie to nowhere’
Since its not a follow-up to the Coldest Winter Ever, I don’t think I will waste my money. I will look for it in the library or borrow from someone who is done reading it.
I LOVED COLDEST WINTER EVER…SHIT ACTUALLY HAD ME IN TEARS AT THE ENDING, IM A BIT SKEPTICAL ABOUT THIS ONE THO, IM WORRIED IT MIGHT BE TOO HOOD AND PREDICTABLE, PLEASE SOME1 TELL ME OTHERWISE B4 I BUY IT.
LMAO @ 31
I enjoyed reading her books in the past so no reason I wouldn’t check this one out…
Anyway, I think Sista Souljah tells it like it is about black women from her point of view and experiences and if you’ve ever heard her speak in the past nothing has changed about that. She feels very strongly and has always been very opinionated about her feelings about black women and the muslim religion nothing new there.
I’M NOT A REAL BOOK READER BUT MY FRIEND GAVE ME COLDEST WINTER TO READ. I LOVED IT! LOVED IT! I WISH SHE WOULD COME OUT WITH A MOVIE WILL BE THE FIRST TO SEE IT!!!
but yea i to was waiting on the movie 4 the coldest winter ever i thought Jada was going to do something with that wouldnt it b great if she (jada) playd the crackhead mama and who would b winter maybe Lauren London but she would def need to take some acting classes lol anywho Midnight was a damn near 500page waste of paper i wouldnt read it again nor recommend it 2 any1 else
I read Coldest so long ago, but I still remember that book vividly, and I still see Rosario Dawson in the role of Winter. I thought Will and Jada had purchase the movie rights to this book a long time ago. However, I don’t know that a movie could ever do the book justice if it didn’t stick closely to the original story line.
I’m going to buy and read Midnight – behind Winter, he was the character that intrigued me the most. I think it will be interested to see what made him the man he was in “Coldest Winter Ever.”
For those that don’t want to buy it, see if your local LIBRARY (remember those??) has it – *gone to check and put it on hold now*
It’s about time she came out with another book. The Coldest Winter Ever was my ish! And when she came to my school to talk, she brought the house down…had all of us feeling like we were little black “souljah’s!”
I think this book was phenomenal. It was very different and I wished that midnight would have found a black queen, but to each his own. Souljah put her foot in this one. I could barely put it down.
I finished this book 2 weeks ago and it was not a good read. 7 hours of my life in total wasted. The book had no real strong plot and it portrays Black American Women in a very negative. i really had no interest in reading a graphic sex scene involving 2 14yr old kids
#3, I, too, had my own image of Midnight
. #4, I rememeber a while back that Jada was supposed to produce and star in the movie, but that was just what I heard. I liked Midnight. It was different than what I expected but I still enjoyed it.
looooooved coldest winter ever ….now thats a movie i would have loved to see ….could not put the book down …. lol
this must be the coninutation of the character midnight in “The Coldest Winter Ever”. I can see why she did that because when he was telling his life story to Winter it sound like it was going to a continuation of his story being in a noverl. Well I’m interested and would like to read it!
I think there should be “the Coldest Winter Ever” part two. I would love to see whats up or what happened to Winter. She should be getting out of prison soon. Also I want to learn more about her sister because she was traveling in Winter footsteps when the book ended. I know her dad, Santiago, is still in prison, he had Life!!!
I always said I wish she would turn CWE into a book however I never knew so many people felt the same and Will and Jada actually wanted to do just that! I ‘m a bit skeptical about Midnight I usually never go off of another’s opinion whether something is good or bad but must admit Midnight was mad interesting in CWE so if this has nothing to do with it I don’t think I’m that interested
my bad I meant into a *movie* oops
There is not going to be a part 2 of the coldest winter ever! I bought midnight the day it came out, its good! but nothing like The coldest winter ever it only goes up to he turns 14 before he starts working with winter family the santiagos but he falls in love but the girls ends up getting taking away and he goes to look for her and that how it ends, so it looks like it will be another part 2 of the book midnight
I LOOOVE Sister Souljah…..she is a great writer….her and Mary Monroe are two of my fave story tellers. CL yall kick azz.
Then agaim I dont think COldest Winter Ever needs a sequel if its not gong to complete the story line. IE: Flyy Girl was my book too, but the sequel involving Tracy was not how I thought it should’ve been.
OH LET ME TELL YA’LL WHAT’S A GOOD READ!!!!!!!!
Let’s Talk About Pep
by Pepa from Salt n Pepa!!
OMG!!! I finished that book in 1 day….I’m a Salt-n-Pepa fan! And I learned soooo much about them as a group and her as an individual….Now that book is awesome!!
@ #1 are you slow?? Have you even read any of Sister Souljah books and did you even comprehend them?? Obviously not. She is one of the dopest most realest authors to date….ma plz get real.
#54….nobody cares…pepa need to keep her personal life…just that. PERSONAL.
Im scared for the movie. We know that too often that movies are never like the books they come from.
I LOVE SISTER SOULJAH!!!!
SHE JUST GETS IT! THROUGH ALL THE KNOWLEDGE THAT SHE OBVIOUSLY HAS & U CAN TELL SHE IS VERY INTUITIVE….. AND AT THE SAME TIME, GETS THE HOOD. UNDERSTANDS IT TO A TEE…. EVEN ALL THE DOPE GAME STUFF…. INCREDIBLE…. JUST THE MOST INTELLIGENT YOUNG BLACK FEMALE WRITER PERIOD.
I HEARD THAT WILL & JADA WERE SUPPOSED TO WORK ON THE COLDEST WINTER EVER MOVIE, BUT THAT WAS A WHILE BACK… I DON’T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT… WHO COULD U GUYS SEE PLAYING WINTER???
BACK THEN, I SAID TO MYSELF AALIYAH… CUZ THO SHE WASN’T EVIL, I’M SURE SHE COULD HAVE PLAYED THAT PART WITH HER GREAT ACTING & PLUS SHE WAS GORGEOUS ENOUGH TO PLAY WINTER’S CHARACTER…. BUT WITH TODAY’S YOUNG ACTRESSES, NOT SO SURE WHO NOW….
ANYWHO, I MOST DEF WILL COP MIDNIGHT… CUZ I HAD NO IDEA. GOOD LOOK, ANGEL!!!
AND NO ONE KNOW WTF #1 IS TALKIN ABOUT
LOL
@ M.Love- Mannnnn, PHUCK what Pep gotta say in her book. If she aint admitting to once being a man and how she overdoses on botox! I aint interested! With her old, manly ass! Ya’ll don’t see her hard ass face?! She look like a felon!
